We brought customers to this restaurant on Wednesday night and they did not disappoint. Service was on point, drinks well made and the food delicious. My wedge salad was perfect and with the addition of candied pecans it was more unique than your standard wedge. My wild salmon was perfectly prepared and very flavorful as was the bed of risotto. Wow! My wife took me here for my birthday tonight! And yes the food was amazingly delicious! Unfortunately, our entrees came out cold. Normally I wouldn't rate a restaurant with five stars for serving us cold food! However, moments after we got it and took our first couple bites, the owner (at the time we thought was the manager but the waitress informed us he was the owner after we asked) he immediately apologized, and said "this should never have happened". What an amazing restaurant! It is housed in a building that projects an old-school southern vibe. While it is consistent with their theme, their attention to detail will blow you away. Starting with their phenomenal bourbon list and their amazing biscuits that are served as table bread. The biscuits are perfectly warm and just melt in your mouth, the flavor is amazing. Their bourbon list needs a review of its own, let me summarize in one sentence: they have Pappy Van Winkle's 10,12,15,20 and 23 amongst the other big brand reserves. Food and drinks were very good. We started with buttermilk fried oysters (delicious!). I had the scallops with cheddar grits. The scallops were sweet and perfectly cooked. The grits were creamy with just the right cheese. My wife had a fish special with some sort of crawfish sauce on top. It was difficult to hear the server's description so I'm not sure what it was, but it was good. Both were served with green beans that were barely cooked, but tasty. We ended by splitting the banana cream pie, which was not fluffy like most. It was dense but good. A couple off-putting things. The old tin ceiling had several areas of peeling paint that looked ready to drop in people's food at any minute. Seriously, some pieces are barely attached. I ordered the red snapper special and it was super excellent. Not too much food, flavorful and just right. Great beer and bourbon selection. Sat at the bar and bartender was on his "A" game. I like this place for a number of reasons. 1.the food is pretty good 2. Nice quiet atmosphere, kinda dark and mysterious 3. Service is usually pretty good. 4. It's right next door to the hotel I stay at for work (marriott). Had the roasted chicken w/ spicy greens and wedge salad. Very small, yet tasty, piece of meat; greens were very interesting and the wedge was above average for a wedge. 3 local pints to wash'er down. 40$ in all and back in the room an hr later, no too shabby. I do not know how you mess up a ribeye but Monroes managed to do just that. I sat at the bar on a Thursday and had quick attentive service. The wine list was up to par but not the bell of the ball. The bartender was friendly and provided good service but did spend a good amount of time joking with his coworkers. I ordered the ribeye medium rare which some how managed to come out dry. I am still perplexed by that. However the flavor was pretty good and the Gorgonzola potatoes on the side were out of this world. For the price of the meal I was frankly expecting more. I would come back but stay far away from the steak and try to just order an extra large serving of potatoes. read more

Just got to Memphis for a few days and was wandering around looking for lunch. Heard this place was a must go and it really was. We ordered the crab cakes that are an entree for an appetizer as I am a sucker for them. And wow. So good. Since it was an entree it came with two sides. Garlic mashed potatoes and chipotle sweet potatoes. It was heavenly. We split a tuna filet sandwich and that was also wonderful. Pesto pasta salad came with it and both were great. Stopped through here on a RV trip from LA to NYC. We ate at a lot of great spots along the way, and had some great meals in NYC, BUT this was by far the best meal of the trip, AND it might have just been the best meal of my life. Always a sure thing, we love McEwen's. Even though my last review here was 3 yrs ago (we have been many times since then) it has stayed the same and no more expensive. The scallops are the best around and the stone ground cheese grits just perfect and paired with green beans. The strip steak and potatoes were delicious and really priced right. The fresh hot biscuits brought to the table are so good. Their special banana cream pie with chocolate sauce is always the best. My only complaint is the blue cheese dressing on the wedge that I love-- had an odd spiciness to it that I did not like- but my husband did. This would be a 5-Star review if we hadn't been shooed out of there. The food was excellent and the service was good until the entrees came. Every interaction with the waitstaff was abrupt and curt. It really put a bad taste in my mouth. The restaurant should not offer 8:30PM reservations if you expect your diners to be out of there by 10PM. Also, there were no less than three times when we asked each other - where's our food/wine/coffee? Our late departure was actually due in part to the staff themselves with absolutely no apologies. It just felt like they resented us for being there. We weren't just sitting there chatting. We were ordering cocktails and wine and dessert every few minutes. Our reservation was for 8:30PM and we finally departed at 10:45PM. To me, that isn't an egregiously long dinner that warranted this treatment. Actually, nothing warrants that treatment. After reading all the four and five star reviews, my wife and I were pretty excited about dining here. We started off with a few glasses of wine and the Southern Style Spring Rolls. The presentation was nice but I found the rolls to be extremely greasy and the dipping sauce a little salty for my taste. Next, we tried the Warm Wild Mushroom Salad, which was excellent. Both main course plates looked great. My wife got the scallops with cheese grits..excellent dish; scallops cooked just right, beautifully presented and how bout them grits! I got the roasted halibut served over a nice risotto along with sautéed spinach. My dish looked great but the halibut was slightly over cooked and the fish portion was on the small size. Overall, great service and generally great food. I've dinned here before and have found the food and service to be pretty consistent. Went Tapas again. Sat in the bar.... bartender is the waiter..... not very attentive. The other hostess actually came over to take my order.... i had already ordered, and she was there the short rib noodles came out. She asked me if I wanted biscuits... i also toom this time to order my second dish. (Since I still haven't seen the bartender again). I had asked him how the cumin chicken thighs (pulled) appetizer was presented. His description.... it's basically the pulled chicken on a tortilla. When i asked the hostess her preference between the cumin chicken and the duck confit, she said they were both excellent, and ahe asked the other bartnder who had just brought out the short rib noodles. Her response was, "omg, the chicken. It's cooked in the confit, and is so juicy...... and the johnny cakes. Yum." Does that sound more appetizing then "pulled chicken on a taco"? I should say so. The short rib was a very tender, and the pasta was interesting. It seemed aldente, but a little 'crisp'. It was interesting. Didn't seem undercooked, just a little different. It was tasty, but the pasta wasn't 'creamy' at all. The sauce was a little sweet for my taste. The chicken was very tender and had a great flavor..... the johnny cakes, greens and sauce combined very nicely. Could have done without the sprinkled cumin on top (I assume it was cumin). Made it a little too "cuminee" for me. I would definitely order it again, bit would ask for it to be prepared without the sprinkle at the end. Maybe about a 1/10 of what was sprinkled on. A hint is always better than a dousing when it comes to cumin. The rest of the flavors were subjegated and lost in the mix. All in all, a very good meal. I will be back. Apparently I was a little finicky tonight...... bit i prefer subtle flavors, and let the quality ingredients and balanced flavors do the talking. read more

We were on a cross-country road trip, Arizona to Maine, with a one-night splurge at the Peabody Hotel and needed a nice place for dinner nearby. McEwen's fit the bill nicely. This is such a pleasant place, you get the right, comfortable vide right away. The hit of the night was the Warm Molasses Braised Cabbage Salad, flavorful and delicious. The Fried Oysters were great too. The Tuna & Beef Tartare Duo was good but paled in comparison. Finally, the Banana Creme Pie was great too. Am in town on business and colleagues took me here last night. We had the best server-she knew the menu and was super helpful-we all had the sea bass and all I can say is WOW! The best I've ever had-crispy on the outside and tender and flakey on the inside served over risotto and spinach with a broth that was out of this world. I don't get to McEwen's nearly enough but when I do, I always enjoy it. My husband and I enjoyed an early Saturday dinner at the bar and it was fantastic. I had a simple wedge salad which was crisp, delicious and huge! Then I enjoyed the crab cakes small plate. They were beautifully presented and luscious. My husband had the seasonal watermelon salad and a nightly halibut special. OUTSTANDING! The bar service is comfortable and enjoyable until around 7:15 when we were getting crowded out by diners waiting for tables. We finishing up anyway. I don't know why I never think to go to McEwen's, but it's now one of my favorites downtown. Love the cheese plate, cauliflower, catfish and snapper. I've sat at the bar every time and had great service and conversations with the bartenders. Plus they have decent wines that are not too pricey. Adding this to my regular rotation. read more

The sea bass melts in your mouth and the braised beef pasta is amazing. Don't worry about parking. There is a valet. I was traveling to Memphis for work and happened upon this gem the first night. I loved it so much I came back again even though I was only in Memphis for 3 nights..I ate at the bar both times. The bartender was super low-key, yet attentive and spot on. I had small plates the first night: the cumin braised chicken thigh meat on Johnnycakes, and the braised short rib pasta. I don't think I'll ever forget the taste of the short rib pasta / papardelle. Night two was the fried oyster appetizer dish and the warm mushroom salad. Each dish was a hit in my mind. My one minor issue with the mushroom salad had a huge amount of balsamic vinegar on it. But, it was listed on the menu so... I must tell you, try the "Pear & Thyme Shrub" cocktail... Wheatley Vodka, pear & thyme syrup, apple cider vinegar, lemon & soda. On ice. The bartender was kind enough to make it for me with gin instead of vodka. Also in the cocktail is a mini pear, which at first I thought was a giant olive! Oh and dessert.. they have a wonderful pastry chef. I had the chef's cobbler. I'll start by saying this place has potential to be 5 star. Let's start with the service. There is a LOT to be desired here. My wife and I went to the bar before meeting our group. Walking in, there was a leave you alone type of vibe which works in some places, but not here. The bartender barely greeted us, was not very friendly, and was very slow (and there were not a lot of patrons). I'd say two drinks took 15-20 minutes. Our service at the table with our group was not any better. The server was barley attentive. We had to find her to ask for service and she still took 5-10 minutes or so to return to our table. She minimally answered questions and in general was not very welcoming. I would say this was the attitude and environment we received all night from everyone. Service makes a huge difference in a dining experience and this place definitely looses points here. The food flirts with being phenomenal - it's so close! The main items were great. However, the sides are really lacking. I was served a salad (mixed greens on the menu) that I asked for no onions on. Apparently that meant I also wanted one quarter of a cherry tomato also. And guess what, I couldn't find a server to correct the issue, so I basically ate lettuce and cucumbers. My wife's soup was bland and required salt. Others at our table thought the same. My green beans with my entree were almost tasteless and not cooked enough. There was a cheese crisp in the middle of the grits which could have really added a nice change of texture to the grits, but instead tasted like tough cardboard. I think the issue is sides/starters here. The beef tenderloin and scallops were terrific! The deserts were also great. Our wine was good, I can't remember the brand, but of course we mainly poured our own because we barely had service (poor us, right?). But that of course isn't a big deal. The drinks were just ok - nothing spectacular. I would probably visit another bar that could make a great $11-12 beverage. Overall, very disappointed with this place.
