I am from NYC and this palce is not on Beale street, but it is a short walk from there. The food is amazing! We had wild Damon, spinach with fresh garlic over risotto. Came in for lunch and it was pretty dead. Had the salmon, which was good. Got two sides, the spicy greens and the fried ochre. The ochre was good. The greens were meh. Service was fast. Say by the heater since it was so cold inside. Service was good and personal. they pack a lot of tables in a small space. They recommended dinner here instead of lunch. Do not patronize this restaurant. They offer valet parking, but the valet parks cars in a dark alley and has no security guard. Last night my car and (according to the restaurant) 5 others had windows smashed. And then they had the gall to charge me for the parking anyway. Of course they have arranged things so they can claim legally that they outsource the valet service and the valet company is liable. And of course the valet company hands you a tag for the car with printed statements that they are not liable. But the issue is not legal. The issue is a restaurant which, by whatever means necessary, does not provide proper protection for patrons who use their valet service. I have eaten my last meal there. Nice place in the heart of downtown. The menu changes with the seasons and often has things that are only in season which is a wonderful perk. They have quite an extensive list of whiskeys including lots of local bourbons and all are amazing. The one thing you must get is the short rib pasta for an appetizer. It is perfectly seasoned with plenty of meat and is a good amount to split between two. I ordered the ribeye which was done to perfection and The potatoes that came with were pretty good. Pork osso bucco over grits with a ratatouille-like winter stew and spicy collard greens was extraordinary. Probably the best osso bucco I've ever had. Bravo! Small plates: Farro with roasted winter vegetables was... more like vegetables with a little farro sprinkled on. Nothing to see here, move on. Mini crab cakes: excellent. Short rib pasta: as unctuous as you'd expect from short ribs. Delicious. Lobster risotto: fine, but not extraordinary. Baked brie: good, with a firmer pastry than the usual phyllo. Cheesecake: good, with a orange-citrus note. But otherwise simply a competent cheesecake. Mexican chocolate crème brûlée: excellent, and I don't usually approve of messing with the simplicity of this dish. But this was extremely tasty. I won't be back. Severely mediocre. I was disappointed and expected much more. Waited 30 minutes at the bar for our reservation... no big deal I love any excuse to drink an old fashioned. My old fashioned was made with the "house bourbon" which she made seem like it was a nicer private selection, it tasted like trash. Standard Kroger cherry. No orange. Lacked all around. I didn't complain or say anything. I just drank it. My buddy ordered bulleit bourbon and was shocked to see how much he overplayed for his drink. (He payed 6 more bucks for his.) So we ordered a cheese plate appetizer, it was just okay. The salad before the meal took a Long time to come out. And my main entree which was pulled pork shoulder over grits topped with a jalapeño slaw was just okay. Just okay. The slaw had an good kick and the grits tasted pretty good. Nothing to write home about. The greens took a lot of salt to become edible. Bread pudding for dessert. Blah. Overpriced. Our server was great. Don't remember his name. Longer hair with glasses. This is just a really reliable place...especially for a business lunch or dinner. Whenever I want someone to be certain I am asking them to meet me for business (not a date) or platonically, I suggest McEwen's. Plus it's kinda fancy food wise. What I mean by that is they have some pretty sophisticated stuff on their menu...so I feel perfectly fine inviting someone to meet me there given my foodie reputation. And there are a ton of business men in there with suits on, hence the non-romantic atmosphere. And I love that it is downtown...which of course requires there to be a valet if you want me to go there, which they do have. read more

I'm a pretty big fan of McEwen's. In the past three years we've been here, the food has always been consistently good quality, the service pleasant, the atmosphere welcoming (we prefer the bar/hightops), and now that we've found the relatively unknown vegan plate... the good times roll that much more often. There is a strange "Well, McEwen's used to be..." among longer-time Memphians... and frankly I don't know what they're talking about. Recommendations at McEwen's: The entrees are all well and good, but I normally go with two small plates and an appetizer... because I like eating three meals. Buttermilk fried oysters app, shortrib sandwich small plate, and the tenderloin gyro (or switch that up to the lobster saffron risotto, because that's whats up). If you're thinking vegan, just ask for the vegan plate... if you can handle non-vegan, but want the veggies, ask for the veggie plate. It's great and it's an entire meal, and it feels like a meal... not a platter of crudite. Beyond all these choices, the apps, salads, and rest of the menu won't disappoint. I gave it 5 stars because it's a sure fire good evening. The prices can start to climb if you're drinking wine with all that food, and valet is $7, so that normally turns into $10 pretty quickly... meaning you're not going out on a budget here if you're not keeping an eye on things. One of the upsides to staying downtown is the reasonable proximity to traipsing over to a sit down meal, and when I told someone last week that I had lunch at McEwen's, the answer I got was "oooh, fancy." I'm sure your definition of fancy is primarily backed out against your other dining encounters, but in my experience, I really enjoyed McEwen's. Granted, I was there for lunch and launched myself onto a corner bar stool for easy access, but the service was prompt and they checked on how I was doing frequently, which of course is only as good as the meal you're enjoying at the time, and mine was great. I opted for the lunch portion of grilled Atlantic salmon in a miso and pecan glaze, in this case with a side of peas, which really hit the spot. The salmon was a sizable cut, and the glaze arrived flavor forward, nuanced and intriguing. I'm sure McEwen's isn't the type of spot that you'd make your every day stop - there's really no discernible parking unless you're downtown anyway - but it did feel like a treat, and to tweak a famous phrase, sometimes the best revenge isn't living well: sometimes the best revenge is eating well. Considering that I now eat here regularly every couple of weeks for lunch, 5 stars it is! If you're looking for a cozy eatery with excellent food, McEwen's is a must. I wish I could say everything on the menu is fantastic - but the truth is I've only had their pecan-glazed Atlantic salmon. I literally crave this dish the second we decide to dine here, thus I cannot bring myself to order anything else. Although friends of mine branch out with the menu items and are never disappointed. The salmon trio'd with the spicy greens and squash casserole - one feels like it's Thanksgiving in Maine; the perfect antidote to a rainy Monday in Memphis. Other notes: During M-F lunch hours it's a power lunch place. You'll be surrounded by tons of "suits." Lawyers, Bankers, Politicians. Great first time experience. Atmosphere was casually intimate. A bar sits on top when you walk in and fining is down a step in a cozy living room type thingy with the old school heat system... Glad we ignored the recent negative reviews and chose to have cocktails and dinner here. It was a wonderful experience all around. We were fortunate enough to get seats at the bar, which is always our preference. Our bartender, Parks, was excellent and added to our positive experience with his engaging personality. I had the sea bass with mushroom risotto and spinach. It was delicious and I cleaned my plate. My husband had the pork Osso Bocca with cheese grits and was equally happy with his meal. The staff here is amazing! I took my parents here for my mother's birthday during a family trip to Memphis. I contacted the restaurant beforehand, and made all kinds of annoying requests to them (most notably, could they make me a vegan meal and could I bring my own vegan birthday cake). They were SO COOL and accommodating to me, and made our evening very special. Everyone loved their dinner, but I need to give them special credit for my outstanding vegan meal. I was expecting a plate of veggies and a plain baked potato, as that is the kind of thing I am typically served in nice restaurants that don't generally cater to vegans. But they made me an amazing plate of tasty food, including a wonderful black bean tostada and a grilled avocado! There were about 8 different dishes on my plate, all of them good. I have been a fan of McEwen's for a long time. I used to stop in for lunch about every other week when I worked in the downtown area and it was always a meal I looked forward to. Recently, I went with a friend for dinner and was pleased to find it hasn't changed much over the years. The food and the service were both impeccable. I've heard that McEwens offers great food so on a recent visit to Memphis, I went with my family to check it out. We started with the fried oysters, spring rolls and a special of the night - braised cabbage salad, which was incredible. The salad was nothing like I'd imagined. The cabbage almost looked like noodles with greens on top and blue cheese crumbles. It was amazing, amazing I tell you! I was waiting all day to try the sweet potato crusted catfish but when I tried it, I was glad that I had sort of filled up on the appetizers and bread. It wasn't anything special. The "sweet potato crusted" teaser was actually just a few shavings of potato on top. It needed some of the cinnamon butter that they put on the sweet potatoes. That would have been awesome. The collard greens had a bite to them, which was good but the mac and cheese was soupy and didn't hold together well. Dessert was a comeback course though. The banana cream pie was divine...and I don't even like banana cream pie! It was certainly the best dessert of the four we had at the table including the blackberry cobbler, the sorbets and the chocolate torte. Our server was ever-present, in a good way and the manager came over to see how we were enjoying our meal. The appetizers and dessert put McEwen's in the four-star category. One of my favorite restaurants in the Memphis area. I eat lunch here every week. My wife and I use to have dinner here often for many years... until we moved to the suburbs. The original owner (early 2000's) was great... the new owners are also doing a great job. The atmosphere is very laid back in the bar area and a little nicer in the dining room. The lunch food is great. The best downtown. Reasonably priced... very well prepared. The server in the bar at lunch, Brad, is one of the best. He always brings us our favorite drinks and knows what we like to eat. My favorite lunch items: The Roasted Chicken Breast Sandwich, The Pecan & Miso Salmon, ALL of their lunch specials. We started our Saturday evening at the bar, where a very educational bartender gave us an impromptu and appreciated lesson on the 63 different bourbons stocked at McEwen's. We settled on old fashioneds and they were DELICIOUS - so much so, I had a second at dinner! We decided to do all small plates for dinner. We ordered five at random, and our waiter ordered them properly so we started with fish and worked up to meats. The shrimp and grits was delectable - I would have sold my first born for a bigger dollop of grits! The scallops were perfectly seared and tender. The lobster risotto was a bit too al dente for our taste, and not as creamy as expected, but the lobster was tender and flavorful. The cumin chicken thighs were a particular highlight for me - full of complex flavor. We finished with the short ribs on grilled sourdough...and there's NOTHING wrong with that sentence! Yum. For dessert I had the triple coconut cake which was light and delicious. My husband had the banana cream pie and, being a banana cream pie snob, I expected him to shrug, but he loved it. Wow - After a negative experiences at a certain highly rated restaurant in the area, McEwen's has redeemed my faith in downtown dining! :) Sat at the bar because I like the nice-but-not-too-formal atmosphere. Started off with the tartare duo...and a glass of Prosecco, of course! Duo was yummy and well worth getting. My fave was the tuna - no surprise, given my love for asian flavors. For my entree, I ordered the glazed ribeye. It came with potato gratin, and I asked that they substitute the roasted potatoes with arugula for the asparagus. (Hey, don't judge - I eat a LOT of veggies. WHen I'm out I want to indulge!) The potatoes with arugula was good, but gratin was so-so. Pretty greasy. Would rather have had mashed potatoes. Steak was cooked to my liking - the rare side of med-rare. Some people have mentioned the amount of fat, but it's a ribeye! It should sorta be expected. I cut away the large bits and still had plenty of food! In fact, had to get a to-go box for about half my steak and some potatoes. Dinner was served with tender, flaky biscuits. Being from the north, I am MUCH more of a roll girl, but with biscuits like these, I didn't miss having bread. My date went all Southern and ordered the catfish with mac n cheese and collards. I am not at all a eater or liker of that particular fish, but I tried it and it was..not terrible. Lol - that's about the best I can say. That's just my tastes, though - he loved it. The mac n cheese was ok - I love mac n cheese but this didn't really rate much for me. Collards were good for what they were - again, not really my thing. Basically, my date ordered the menu dish that LEAST appealed to me! :) He cleaned his plate. I was in the mood for chocolate, so we got the flourless cake. Wow! I did not expect to find a place like this in Memphis. Even though we walked in after 10pm, Leigh, our server, didn't bat an eye, or get huffy because we were latecomers. She was top-notch. On to the food... I had the osso bucco with the cheddar grits. Oh. My. God. Food-gasm. The grits were creamy and perfect, and the sauce had just the right amount of spice. I pulled the bone out of the meat with barely an effort. My girl had the duck breast, which was cooked perfectly and had a delicious crust and glaze. It paired great with the potatoes and butternut squash. Wonderful entrées! For dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake and the vanilla bean creme brûlée. The cake was amazing! But...what was even more amazing? The creme brûlée paired with the moscato. I've literally never had a better dessert pairing. Might be too sweet for some, but it was perfect for us and our collective sweet tooth. I was very sad when it was gone! All in all, I think this place has everything going for it. Fantastic restaurant in downtown Memphis. My girlfriend and I were on a Tennessee tour and spent 2 nights in Memphis. We decided to give McEwens a shot for dinner out last night there, and what a great choice that was! We sat downstairs in the wine cellar, which was beautiful. Brick walls all around, it gave sort of a European feel to our dinner. We started with the smoked salmon with crostini and it was absolutely delicious. Screw the crostini, I didn't even need it! The salmon by itself was absolutely amazing, and the sauce they dress the plate with only added to the flavors. We then decided to share three of their smaller plates instead of doing entrees so we could try more. I can't remember what all there were, but they were delicious. The lobster risotto definitely stood out though. I could have eaten an entire bowl of it. So good! All that food, with dessert, 2 cocktails and 2 glasses of wine for under $100. Truly phenomenal meal this evening with my wife and best friends. We had the Kobe Beef Sliders & Tuna/Steak Tartare for apps. Followed it up with a decent but not extraordinary wedge salad and Lobster Risotto was fairly tasty. However, the Grilled Bone-In Berkshire Pork Chop with Caramelized Onion/Smoked Bacon Gravy was honestly one of the BEST & Most Amazing single pieces of meat I've ever tasted. Not enough superlatives to describe that chop. This is something that should not be missed! An incredible Banana Cream Pie finished the evening delightfully! Try anything on the menu that strikes your fancy and if you are not sure ask your Server. They are very knowledgeable about the menu and the preparation of each dish. I took my girlfriend there for Valentine's day and we had a wonderful time. I started with the pan seared scallop. The scallop was blackened and cooked perfectly. The sauce was unbelievably delicious. My girlfriend had the House Cured Salmon. It was really good too. We shared a warm mushroom salad. I liked the touch of the earthy mushrooms. I decided on sea bass for entree. It was good. The shitake mushroom was a nice touch. I think I'll add them in my next risotto. My girlfriend had the seafood pasta. She liked it but wasn't thrilled. The fish was too burnt for her liking. We shared a trio of sorbet for dessert. Overall, our experience was wonderful at McEwen's and will visit again. read more

My favorite downtown restaurant now for about 2 years. We like eating in the bar better than the dining room, but both are very nice. The menu is wonderful, everything we've had has been really good. Yesterday was my birthday! So my husband took me to McEwens tonight to celebrate. We chose this restaurant based on the reviews and ratings. Very underwhelmed. For the price point, I was expecting everything to be fabulous. Instead, certain aspects of each dish were good - but as a whole, no one dish was excellent. In addition, our waitress's service was below average and when my husband told her it was my birthday, she said she could give him a candle if he bought a dessert...thank you?? In addition, my drink was watery and I got an "oh well" response. All in all, the food is good but customer service is not a top priority. With so many other local restaurants, I can't imagine we'll be back or recommend to friends. read more

I was in Memphis for a day, so I carefully reviewed all my choices for dinner, after debating between two places I finally settled for this place. And boy was I glad I did! Everything here was awesome! As a soon as i walked in i was greeted very nicely. This place reminded me a lo of my favorite place back at home in Orlando so I had a good feeling it was going to be great. Sure enough this place delivered. I started with the buttermilk fried oysters. DELICIOUS! Crispy fried to perfection. Love it! I then ordered the shrimps and grits. Another successful dish. It was very tasty packed with intense and complex flavors. Absolutely loved this plate. As the entree I ordered the ossobuco with cheddar grits and spicy collard greens, yet another big hit. The pork was so tender and juicy and the grits and collard greens really brought harmony to the entire dish. Wonderful combination. The waitress recommended I try the banana cream pie as dessert so that I did. It was the best banana cream pie I've had thus far. Rich and creamy and banana intense. I'm lucky enough to have my work frequently cater meetings with food from McEwen's. For the cheap price, they are a fantastic lunch option for the upscale food they provide, and I've never heard anyone personally have a bad experience with the food, service, or delivery. My personal favorite is their Jungle of Greens salad with grilled chicken. If you're going to have to sit through a long meeting, this salad is extremely refreshing and flavorful, and won't knock you out like some heavier lunch offerings. No matter what you do, get their Roasted Potato Salad. I had someone swipe mine at a lunch before I could grab it, and while I don't know who did it, I'll probably hold a grudge against them forever. This may be the best meal I've ever had!!! Packed restaurant on a Saturday night, but was able to get two spots at the bar where they regularly serve food. I had the pan seared Seabass with an orange soy sauce, shittake mushroom risotto, and sautéed spinach. Everything was made to perfection. The sea bass had a crunchy top but literally fell apart when my fork hit it. The risotto was creamy and extremely flavorful and the spinach was not overdone with flavor. Sometimes it's best to just let good fresh ingredients do their thing. Speaking of which, the iceberg lettuce wedge with homemade blue cheese dressing, tomato, and bacon pieces tasted as terrific as it looked. Juicy flat iron steak with a soy worcestershire marinade and garlic mash potatoes cooked to flawlessly. For dessert, we split the chocolate love with raspberry, strawberry, and blackberry. I love to see art for sale on restaurant walls - its a great way for the restaurant to express itself and provide an opportunity for local artists. We had the Osso Buco and the Ribeye, both were prepared perfectly and lived up to the high expectations we had from the menu. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was the service seemed to be off just a titch - all of the food was fantastic but it just didn't seem that the server was into it. Man, if I were putting out food that good I would serve it with some passion! Perhaps just an off night in that regard - I'll definitely return. Bottle of Sauvignon Blanc was only $24 I liked the cheese plate but my girlfriend thought it wasn't much cheese for 12 bucks and it would have been better if there was some more exciting cheeses. I like that the bread they served was small fluffy biscuits. It would have been nice to have some special butter served with it. We had the Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Ruby Port Demi-Glace, Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes with Crispy Benton's Bacon & Leeks, Grilled Asparagus $30. The tenderloin was a little small and although it was tender it was not quite as tender as I expected. Although the sauce was very good, it tasted more like the Habanero glaze described for the ribeye. The grilled asparagus had a nice smoky flavor. The mashed potatoes were very good and definitely worth bragging about . I'm not sure it was a good idea to include bacon bits the size of peas. It was a little disconcerting to discover chewy things in your mashed potatoes. (good thing the menu mention them) However those bacon "bits" were so good they should consider serving them as a side. My girlfriend mentioned that everything tasted smoky and it would have been nice to have a non-smoky alternative on the plate as a contrast. She also said that everything tasted too salty for her (not me). We finished the evening with vanilla bean creme brulee. It was perfect Valet parking is $8. One of the easy go-to's in downtown Memphis. The service is always impeccable. The food is always top notch. The menu is diverse enough to satisfy everyone in your party without being obnoxiously overwhelming with too many options to choose from. Since I work downtown, I eat lunch here at least once a week on average. They have sandwiches, salads, and entrees that all come in under $12, which is a bargain for the quality of food and culinary deliciousness that you get...for a LUNCH meal. This is, by far, one of the best bangs for your buck for lunch...not only in downtown Memphis, but anywhere in the city. One of the best tips I can give...always get the soup at lunch! It doesn't matter what the choice is, get it, you won't be disappointed. I've been getting the soup for lunch for over 12 years, and it has only been mediocre once. Every other time it has been phenomenal. Dinner is equally as appealing with similar menu options to those that are offered at lunch. However, the dinner options are even better and are even more delicious. The service is always prompt and never over-intrusive.
