Great service, great food. We loved the experience there. We picked this restaurant reading Yelp reviews, and so glad we did. We're not only from out of town, we're from Europe! We held a business dinner here, it was a table of 8. The service was fantastic and the food was phenomenal. Most of the table ordered some type of fish entree, the sea bass and catfish were a favorite. There was also a Mahi Mahi with etoufee as a special that was exceptional. The desserts were amazing, definitely try the banana pudding! The cocktails were delicious (blackberry smash and planters punch) and the wine selection was great! Wow, this was a tough one. McEwen's would be a solid 3 1/2 should Yelp allow, but without that middle ground, a difficult decision was required. I had settled on 4 based on the friendly staff and a pretty good Grouper special of the day. The dish was nicely seared ( if a touch dry) with a rice, black bean and crawfish mix below. Nothing to warrant a Congressional medal, but not bad. For dessert, I ordered the " famous" ( or some other equally aggrandized adjective) Banana Cream Pie. It fell completely into to OK category. Frankly, it looked like it had been sliced hours ago and left in a cooler, the top and chocolate a touch congealed. Three it was. This seemed like a place that was once the "hot" spot in the city. On an empty street, it was still packed. Not sure why. This was average food. Not bad, but not a meal representative of a total Yelp combination of 4 1/2 stars. read more

Have been here twice in the past week - this place is excellent! A great setting, great drink selection, and wonderful food! The salmon dish was absolutely amazing! From out of town and saw the good ratings, so I thought I'd try it by entertaining a client there. Great atmosphere and decent and conscientious service. Food was mixed. First start with the bad: the ribeye was very grisly. I could barely chew threw it. Expected something above average and got something way below expectations. Shrimp and grits were listed as jumbo... they are not jumbo and there were barely any grits. Taste was good though. My client liked his pork chop and my iceberg wedge salad was below average. With the price point, I expected more. If the prices were 20% less, that's probably the appropriate price point for the quality food delivered. read more

I was thrilled to visit this restaurant, which has a companion restaurant in Oxford. The location is a little hidden and kind of looked deserted, but once inside, this is a very neat and quite busy place. We had some excellent food and very nice drinks. The bar side, where we sat, has a lot of things going on, and yet my we had a very romantic time anyway. The menu is quite nice, with the Brie starter, and the excellent sea scallops and duck breast. My husband found this place and I have to admit based on the name I was skeptical. Sounds like an Irish bar in the south. We were only in Memphis for three days and planned on having some great Southern cuisine. McEwens was so amazing especially the short rib pasta we actually popped back in to grab a second bite!!! So there I was, the only pescatarian (fish-consuming vegetarian) in my party. I was worried, as usual that I will be limited to the standard salad, without bacon. However, the minute I told our server I was pescatarian she immediately showed me items on the menu for me! AND she suggested some substitutions they were happy to make for me (I needed mac and cheese, it's a thing). Usually mcewans is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Memphis. I love ordering the salmon, sea bass, and scallops and the mushroom risotto is to die for. Unfortunately when I went to Mcewans this past weekend I had a negative experience. To begin, our waitress was not very friendly. She rarely checked up on us and seemed annoyed when we tried to ask for different side dishes with our entrees. I ordered the scallops and was brought the salmon. Our waitress never apologized and by the time my correct meal came out (over 20 minutes later..), the entire table of 6 had finished eating their meals already. As if this wasn't already a bad experience, they did not take my meal off the bill, something that should have been done at a nice restaurant like this. I was very disappointed in my service this past weekend which is a bummer because I usually love dining here. read more

I will happily admit that a business lunch at McEwen's has been the best meal my fiancée and I have had since we moved to Memphis. We sat at the bar, as we wanted to get in and out quickly. The bartender was super nice, efficient, and she made some great recommendations for our entrees. I ordered a Wiseacre Awanda to start and then we put our food orders. My fiancée ordered the tostada salad which was totally delicious - the tortilla was a fried flour tortilla and was super crispy and the greens and chicken were perfect!!! I ordered the lunch special which was a seared Mahi Mahi in a lemon butter caper sauce and the best cabbage I've had I think ever. We both scarfed our food down, only stopping to breathe or take a drink. When we were done eating, we realized that we had just eaten the perfect meal to balance out the rest of our Memphis dining experiences. This was my 2nd time to eat here. I'm not from Memphis but we wanted to make sure we got a good meal the night before a race. There were 4 of us & we all loved our food. I got the seabass which was excellent although a little salty because of the miso sauce. It was served over risotto-yummy; sautéed spinach on the side. Another 5 Star stop on my road trip! The service was super friendly and inviting to start. The food presentation is there alongside great flavors. The atmosphere is upscale fine dining without the jacket. They keep it fresh by slightly changing ingredients with the season. And to me some of these food pairings are unique. I thoroughly enjoyed my catfish and collard greens over the mac n cheese. But like fish over a bed of rice, I really didn't eat the mac n cheese because it was about the catfish and greens. I also tried the lamb and it was great but the sauce was a little salty for my taste. For dessert I had the famous banana cream pie & I loved it! Came here for lunch for the first time. I have been here many times for dinner over the years and somehow forgot to write a review. I have always enjoyed dinner here! This review is for lunch. Not a large lunch menu, if you want an entree. I had the flat iron steak with the squash casserole and grilled asparagus. Good, not great. The service was a bit below average. I'm basically giving the Jungle Greens salad five stars. I order it for take out once every month or two, and it's delicious. I actually like it so much I've never ordered anything else. Maybe need to branch out next time. The restaurant offers a relatively quick and affordable dine-in for the suit-and-tie lunch crowd. I've heard that dinner is a little more formal (and expensive). I don't think I have ever eaten as much as I did Friday night at McEwen's. Awesome birthday "food extravaganza"! I believe before it was all said and done, we tried most of the menu! They have an innovative and vast small plates menu with lots of treats that should not be missed. Here are our selections: BBQ Duck Confit Enchilada ($10) - Awesome starter and plentiful for two. Cheesy cream sauce was spicy, but not over the top on spice and didn't take over the dish - Perfect accompaniment to the enchiladas. Warm Wild mushroom Salad ($10) - Large portion - could easily be shared. The mushrooms weren't that varied, there were two "piles" of them on my plate. The walnut vinaigrette competed with the spiced walnuts. Lots going on in this plate, but it was GREAT. Caesar Salad ($7) - Good for your basic caesar - cool croutons! Molasses Braised Cabbage ($9) - Not my favorite dish. A gigantic mound of cabbage on the plate, not a lot of arugula & it was very vinegary (think because it's a sherry vinaigrette). The blue cheese and the macadamia nuts were a great combo, but this should be a shared plate at the table, due to the strong taste. (easily shared among 4) Grilled Steak and Tots ($12.5) - I had this as my "main", and with all of the other dishes we enjoyed, it was a perfect size. The tater tots were amazing (made me want to try to make homemade tater tots!) Grilled Tenderloin - nuf said. Pretty basic. And they DO know how to cook steak. Can't go wrong with any of the side choices - it comes with MPs, but I'd probably opt for the Mac n Cheese ;-) Roasted Butternut Squash Crepes ($9.5) - GREAT tasting dish - definitely a shared plate, as it's pretty rich! The crepes have Bonnie Blue Farm (local Waynesboro, TN farm) goat cheese and caramelized onions ... YUMMMMM! Buttermilk Fried Oysters ($14) - YUM! Very different mignonette (mustard plum sauce). They did a great job with this dish - the oysters kept their crisp. Banana Cream Pie - I didn't taste it, but it looked pretty much like rich banana cream pie! (I'm not usually a fan of this dessert as it would send me into a sugar coma - but it comes VERY HIGHLY recc'd). Cheese Plate ($12) - I would not recc the cheese plate. The spiced pecans were good, but we had spiced walnuts in another dish and they were similar. The purple hull pea hummus was good, but there wasn't much of it. Other than that, my opinion is there are a LOT of artisan cheese producers in Tennessee, and they could have gotten creative showcasing them here. What I got could have been mistake for something from the cheese case at the nearby Publix (Sage Derby Cheese - ew). WHEW ... Great dinner overall. Would try McEwen's again for some of the other small plate choices, for certain. read more

I have recently been spending quite a bit of time in the Memphis area for work and so I've had the opportunity to start checking out some brand new places. McEwen's is very conveniently located near many hotels and bars so it's a great spot to stop by before or after other events. The menu is not incredibly large but features a nice selection of meat options as well as a some unique takes on common dishes all centered around their 'upscale southern' theme. I visited McEwen's with a medium sized party so we were able to order a couple of the appetizers and a wide selection of drinks. The BBQ duck confit enchiladas are a great first stop and if duck isn't your thing try the cheese platter or hummus. We were there during restaurant week so there was a nice special available with two entree options and a dessert. I had the scallops and was happy with my choice despite it not being anything new or special. Overall our table was very happy with the dining experience and I would recommend you drop by if you're looking for something a little different to try in the area. read more

Stumbled on this place while walking and glancing at Yelp ar dinner time. A shout out to my fellow Yelpers to thank you for sending me here. We had the cheese plate - which was yummy. I had the Catfish, which was spectacular. It's served with macaroni and cheese and some icky souther greens (I'm a southerner and I still don't eat that stuff). The fish was cooked to perfection and sweet and delicious. My sister had a salad with goat cheese that she really enjoyed. We split the banana cream pie for dessert - highly recommend that one! Our waiter was Jason, both adorable and very attentive. While we were eating dinner they had a VERY large party come in - we didn't feel neglected at all. Was just in Memphis on expense account and did a yelp query for the pricier restaurants in Memphis. One of our dinner party said I nailed the nice restaurants in town and decided to give mcewans a shot. Mcewans is modern southern food. Meaning food has organic origins, has local tastes, but also made with high quality ingredients. The gazpacho special soup was delicious and we were all super pleased with our entrees. Definitely save room for dessert as well as sweets are scrumptious. read more

Waitress recommended the duck entree which came with white beans and spinach. The duck was cooked perfect and plated nicely in slices. The flavors and preparation of the entire plate was top shelf! We struck out our first night in Memphis by eating ON Beale St. We decided to look on Yelp and see what we could find that was close but not on Beale. This was a pleasant surprise. Great service, nice wine and bourbon selection, and fabulous food. I had a small plate and shared a salad since we didn't want leftovers and it was perfect. I had the grilled steak and tots. It was not what I expected when I read tots! They are house made tots with bacon and cheddar! They were simply perfect. Hubby got the grilled New York strip and it was cooked to perfection. The roasted potato trio was delicious and not a morsel was left. I also had the goat cheese salad. I make a similar fried goat cheese patty and it's a favorite. Everything was fresh and delicious. Service was great. My only complaint is the deteriorating ceiling. Other than that the ambiance is great. read more

My wedge salad was perfect and with the addition of candied pecans it was more unique than your standard wedge. My wild salmon was perfectly prepared and very flavorful as was the bed of risotto. Great little find on Monroe In downtown Memphis. P & I stayed at the Marriott Residence Inn & decided to walk a few doors down to McEwen's for a late night snack & drink. Turned out I was all drinked out for the night but the sip I had of the buttery chardonnay was delish - enjoyed the crab tostadas and southern spring rolls even more. Love the small & tasty plates for sharing. Decent liquor selections (if so inclined), craft beer and wine. Flight is down & across the street but I would go for McEwen's first if you are hungry and don't want to spend a small trust fund. And you aren't a huge wine snob. read more
