These guys are great! I was in a time crunch to get my car smogged in order to get registration done on time. I stopped in at 11am without an appointment and was squeezed in at 12:30. Great customer service. Called at 4:05 on a weekday and was able to make an appointment for 4:30. I expected to wait but they really meant it when they booked an appointment. I went in this morning at 8:30 when they opened, without an appointment. They explained to me that there was an 8:30 appointment and that I'd be right after. By 8:49, I was out the door. It was so fast and convenient! The lady at the counter and the guy performing the test were both so polite and helpful. So, I've used McHenry Smog Center once before, and if I based my review solely on that previous experience, it would have been a 5 star. Unfortunately this past experience has left a sour taste in my mouth, one that may lead me to find another location. The issue this time is one of poor customer service and understanding. I had my car fixed and brought it to this center to get smog tested. I thought I had driven it enough for the computer to reset, but it seems I didn't and the car failed the test. Now, I had called ahead of time and explained the situation to the receptionist, and even reiterated it at drop off. At no time did the receptionist verify that I drove the car enough NOR offer the opportunity for them to check the computer first to make sure it was ready to be tested. In fact, it wasn't until after I came to pick up the car and paid the full price that she offered this tidbit of information. Now I can bring it back for a retest...at nearly the same price (savings of about $8). I just feel that, knowing I just had it fixed, she could have offered the computer check first and saved me some money. Instead I'm left with the impression that all they care about it the money and not building a customer relationship. I have several cars, and I am of the opinion none of them will be tested by this center. Nor would I recommend them to anyone without first offering the caveat that they better make sure their car is set to pass before they sign up for the test. TBH, my frustration could have be avoided if they just, as standard practice, asked if the car had been recently serviced or lost power before agreeing to the test. Thus giving their customer the opportunity to save some money by not paying for a pointless test attempt. Or, at the very least charging a $5 charge to check the computer before actually administering the test. I would have been fine if they checked it, saw it would have failed, and just charged me a minimal (like $5) fee and told me to bring it back after the pre-test conditions had been met. I guess, like all things, caveat emptor. read more

Took my 1990 mercedes here for a smog. I was told it failed because the timing was off. So I took it to the mercedes dealer and had the timing checked. They just LOL and told me. It has electronic timing and is not adjustable. Unless you have a computer and is listed that way in all smog books and computers state wide. They went on to show me that it was dead on timing. In other words. The timing was perfect! So I took it to anther smog shop and it passed with out making any changes at all. I have no idea why this guy failed my car. He seems to be a nice guy and the person in the office was nice. But! They did make me pay the test fee. I think if they fail your car and you take it to the dealer and they do nothing to it and it passes with them. I should be entitled to a refund. When I called and told them about it. They did not to discuss it. So please be warned. If your car fails here and you take it to the dealer and it passes. Call the Bureau of automotive and file a claim. This will keep them honest. I may look like a dumb field worker. But I do my homework. . read more

This is the only place I go to get the cars smogged, regardless if it is a test-only year or not. The owner and his wife are terrific examples of how and why small businesses thrive. They're honest, do great work, and the price is right. I'm happy to hear that business is going well for them. Some years you could just drive up and be seen; now their calendar fills up fast. I was referred to McHenry Smog Center by my wonderful ( by the way the best) mechanic Doug at Central Valley Authohaus - I mention that because my mechanic knows how much I take care of my BMW and that I won't take it just anywhere for any of the services required for my vehicle. My sister also has taken her car to McHenry Smog Center and was very pleased with the service as well. She knows how picky I am and said Khan and his wife are very nice and are all about taking care of us as customers. Khan was friendly, knowledgeable, fast but STILL efficient. His son Brandon was very polite and processed my paper work when I was all done. the most convenient part for me being the commuter that I am during the week is Khan is open on Saturdays - so while I can't always make it in during the week he squeezed me in on a Saturday.
