I have heard good things about McVey's and stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. Despite being very busy with a party on the other side, our service was wonderful and fast. Our total was $24 for 2 lunches and holy cow were we stuffed! You get multiple sides along with bread and salad/soup. Definitely can't go wrong for the price. Reservations are a must. Wife and I went there on a Saturday night and as expected it was very busy. This is definitely a local's or neighborhood place. Outstanding!! Safety precautions were excellent and the food was superb. Definitely a hidden gem. Get there early to enjoy the slow roasted prime rib that just melts in your mouth. Enjoy the full bar to start then settle into the jumbo shrimp cocktail and seafood stuffed mushrooms. This is a great spot for lunch perfect portions and great service. I've always ordered the lake perch and it is superb. All the lunches come with potato and choice of soup or salad. I recently had the French onion soup and it was great. Great food, value and practicing social distancing. Thursdays at Mcveys are fantastic- they have $4 martinis (selection is huge) and almost all apps are also $4 (Thursday special). Great for a girls night out, the food is sooo good! Dining experience: Called for a take out order - Italian beef sandwich and fries Kid answers the phone rudely- immediately puts me on hold I give him my order. He seems confused. Puts me on hold again. Picks back up. I asked him what the soup was for the day. He puts me on hold again. Picks up again, tells me the soup, and that it will 30 minutes. Doesn't take my name or tell me the total. I arrive 30 minutes later. Stand around for a minute. Clearly annoyed and stressed out waitress asks "what do you need?" - I tell her I'm there for a pick up order. She directs me to the bar. I go to the bar. There is more confusion about what I ordered. I had asked for mozz. On the sandwich, so they made mozzarella sticks. After some more confusion, the bartender checks me out. I get home to eat. Fries are cold, sandwich is soggy and mostly bread (no mozzarella by the way.) No napkins or spoon for the soup. $13.00 wasted. read more

The bus girl dumped an oily vinegar slaw down the back of my hair And shirt. The waitress was so rude about it. Only offered me a free desert. I asked to speak with the owner and he was busy cooking but said we cannot do anything about it. It ruined my meal, my night, and my shirt. I will never step foot in there again. The least they could have done was comped my plate or even discounted my plate. On top of the bowl being dumped on me I found numerous bones in my perch. Stay away. Horrible service...15 minutes before host even greeted us. Asked for a drink menu and was told the drink menu was 3 years old and not up to date anyways and since the pandemic they haven't used one. Ordered the spinach artichoke dip...worst I've ever had. Ordered a bone in ribeye charred rare and was told they're grill won't char steaks..even though they advertise charred burgers charred chicken breasts. Instead I ordered a burger and my wife ordered angel hair pasta with marinara and a side salad...waited 53 minutes before asking server to please bring it ....1 hour and 17 minutes later still no food. The server said I looked irritated and would buy me a drink...made excuse for food taking so long saying we had a party table...we said to cancell our order..left $20 on the table for the Pepsi and side salad since server said she would take off the spinach dip since we didn't eat it...dirty dishes on all the tables, completely unacceptable service. Old school and so happy it is. In town for a few days and have eaten here twice. First night the filet was outstanding, perfectly medium rare and tender. Second night I ordered off the combination menu, ribs and fried shrimp. Omg. So good. You could tell the shrimp were breaded in house and not some frozen prebreaded stuff everyone else serves. After dinner drink served in a snifter (who does that anymore). Soup or salad, one side. Bread and complimentary kidney bean salad and cole slaw. Why can't this place be in my hometown. read more

While home from Indy, I visited McVeys with my family for a very enjoyable dinner. It has probably been around 8 years since I last visited, but the food was as good as I remember. The place is quaint and cute and is adorably tucked into Lowell's historic storefronts. The combination platter we started with was amazing. Our family always goes overboard with food and tonight was not an exception. The platter showcased a variety of very lightly fried mushrooms, onion rings, zucchini, cauliflower and cheese sticks. This is the kind of breading you bite into and it doesn't fall off cause it isn't overdone. Coupled with the spicy ranch style dipping sauce... Yum. I got the lightly flowered perch with mashed potatoes. Both were cooked to perfection. While I did find two very tiny bones in my fish, I was unable to finish my plate cause I was absolutely stuffed. My boyfriend and mom both really enjoyed their mahi mahi and my dad's shrimp pasta looked to die for. While they do offer craft beer, it should be noted these are bottles and not on tap. My friend and I went to McVeys tonight for dinner as we have been many times. We both ordered prime rib, which is what I usually order there. When it came, we both had pieces of prime rib that were very tough. The waitress who was very nice and asked us if we would like to return them for a new one and we both said yes within a couple minutes she was back and she said that they were not able to replace them because if they did, they would run out. It's not our problem if they're going to run out we wanted to be satisfied so she asked me if I'd like something in its place so I said sure I'll take the chicken and she said oh that's gonna take way too long so then I said the pork chops and she said that will take too long. She said why don't you just get the ribs they just take a few minutes. So she brought me a half a slab of ribs within just a minute or two they were very tender. They fell right off the bone, but they were very saucy and spicy ate part of them and that was the end of it. I just pushed it to the side. So they were they. She brought our checks they had taken half off of my friends meal, but I was charge full price which I didn't feel I should've had to pay full price for food. I didn't even eat. So, and I think the worst part of it is that it was my birthday and this was my birthday dinner. read more

Prime rib...nice size cuts..we had single and double cut med. rare...perfect temp! Tender. Had side of au jus and horseradish sauce. NO SEASONING. I like a seasoned prime...esp the fat !
