We've been to McVeys for different occasions with family and friends over the years and were there on Sunday, December 18, 2022. I have to say the atmosphere is pretty cool and there's usually a nice vibe. But I think the food is just ok for the price, it's not a place in my opinion that I just have to get back to. Some of the meals are kind of plain, I had the stuffed shrimp, just ok. There were like 10 of us, there were no complaints, but consensus was, its ok. Drinks aren't bad, I had a bloody mary with dinner, it had no garnishes in it. Followed by a vodka, sierra mist, with a splash, the sierra mist was rather flat. I can't remember our servers name, but not the most "happy go lucky " person. I'm not a complainer, but like I say above, just ok. I never tell someone not to try something, I believe you have to try it for yourself at least once, and make your own conclusion. Merry Christmas !! read more

The chef at this restaurant is outstanding as the food is excellent. However, the manager and bartender could use some help in understanding customer relations and diplomacy. Our reservations were for 630, not seated until 710. Waitress walked past our table 4 times before my boyfriend asked her if sshe was going to serve us. I asked to speak to the manager as the bartender came to my table to "correct" me that it was the tonic that I didn't like since I sent my drink back.....first time I have ever had to send a drink back in my lifetime. I had to ask him if he was the bartender as he did not introduce himself before he shoved a glass in my face and told me to "try this" . His attempt to publicly humiliate me did not work and when I said I didn't want another drink he instructed the waitress not to serve me. Funny, I didn't want another drink if you bothered to listen to what I said. The manager, who also did not introduce herself, said she has had problems with him in the past and while she apologized for his behavior, there wasn't anything she could do as "it is a family-owned business". Come to find out, she is family as her father in law owns the restaurant. So, I feel bad for the non family employees as you don't stand a chance for any resolution should they encounter any problems, which as we all know there are problems that happen in life . We will not be back as properly trained restaurant staff know how to provide service with class to patrons. Better yet, if you do go, play it safe and just order a bottled beer since that doesn't require anything of the bartender other than a bottle opener. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Lowell In. What a great place. Joe and Megan run a classy place. The food is awesome and very filling. We drive 80 miles to enjoy the family atmosphere. Well worth it. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. read more

Came in tonight for pickup. Upon arriving they advised the food was not yet ready. A young man took my payment and handed the receipt. As I read it I realized I was charged for ordering a petite sirloin. I advised the girl behind the counter I had ordered the 8oz filet and not the sirloin. She rolled her eyes and continued to sit there doing absolutely nothing to rectify the problem. I then mentioned it to the young man she snapped back saying "you said sirloin on the phone." However, three people were with me as I ordered the food and read it from a printed piece of paper. She then proceeded to tell another worker how I had ordered the "sirloin" before getting up and leaving. This hostess, Katie was completely and utterly rude. If it wasn't for the young man or older lady I would have walked out. There is absolutely no reason to treat a paying customer with such disrespect. McVeys used to be the best local "go to" for a great meal at a great price. The food and prices are still outstanding. Service, however, has declined big time. We stopped in for lunch, and instead of a warm welcome, we received attitude. I can give someone a little pass if the place is crazy crowded or visibly overwhelming, but that was not the case. There were only 3 in our group and we ordered from the vast menu promptly. Our server truly believed it was acceptable to let us know she has the personality of mud. She really needs to learn that if she cannot make the customer feel even slightly appreciated, then a career change should be in her very near future. So to the management of Mczveys, please tune up your staff. It would be a shame to lose customers due to poor attitudes. read more

I won't be back. We got there about 2pm on a Saturday afternoon. There was a table of 6 people eating there. We stood there about 20 mins before anyone even said a word to us then finally said to us...sit anywhere. I said I will as soon as I find a clean table. I hope someone tells their waitress' not to wipe the chairs off with the same cloth they use on the tables. Restaurant critics all say "walk out if anyone does that". Another 20 mins to get drinks. Dinner was ok but the portions were small. Ordered lake perch and got 4 small pieces. Could be cleaner. read more

Not impressed. I ordered the "special" which was parmasean horseradish encrusted beef medallions. My daughters both received their meal 10 minutes before me (they are 11 and 12 so I expect my food at the same time unlike when they were toddlers). The waitress apologized a couple of times for the delay but offered no reason, she also was busy socializing with another table. There were only 2 other tables occupied in the dining room so I don't know what they would do if they actually had a full dining room. I finally got my food...my mashed potatoes were cold. The steaks had an off taste (frozen??) and the "encrusting" was weird. Just didn't taste good. My daughter ordered macaroni and cheese and it looked like it came out of a box. Is it so much to ask for a restaurant to make their own mac and cheese? If I wanted boxed mac and cheese I would have stayed home. It's unfortunate that just okay is considered 4 star in this area. I'd love to know what is homemade there... Anyone saying this is the best has obviously never had good food. read more

My wife and I absolutely love coming to McVey's. The atmosphere in the restaurant is unique and in good taste. The food is delicious and fresh. My favorites are always consistently cooked as well as my wife's. I highly recommend the cheese stick appetizer is you remotely like cheese because they are freshly made, not frozen. Also, they have really good drinks as I prefer their Long Island ice teas and my wife really enjoys their martinis. Only suggestion of improvement I have now is the serving portions of the relishes as it is usually messy when trying to portion it out. I'd rather have two smaller portions served to me than one heaping portion that causes spills on the table. read more

the absolute best restaurant in NW Indiana. Seriously, try it and you'll know I speak the truth. We are foodies and can tell you for the price, you will leave there stuffed as their portions are huge. Wait staff is the classiest in the area, all very good at making you feel comfortable and very, very attentive. Steaks are always juicy and tender and ribs fall off the bone; one of their specialties. I say 'one of' because their perch, whitefish, crabcakes, chicken...oh their heavenly chicken, are also favorites. Specials every weekend, great selection of beer, wine and fabulous FULL bar. In historic downtown Lowell, Indiana in a cute, cozy building with tin ceilings and great ambience. The broasted chicken is amazing and the BBQ rubbed pork chop was delicious! They serve soup or salad with each dinner and bread, garlic toast and coleslaw and bean salad. The coleslaw is sooo good, the beans were good too, but not a to of flavor. But again, still good and I would eat it again. The key lime pie was amazing and refreshing on a warm day. The Riesling was slightly sweet and tart, refreshing. I will def go back. Sit in the back by the bar, Joe is friendly and fun. read more

Had lunch here recently again. It was as always a very good meal and a great deal. For the price of a fast food lunch I had rolls, a side salad, vegetables, perch and French fries. It is always good food, ample portions at a great price. It does not matter lunch or dinner, a great place to go. I have gone there since they opened with no plans to stop. When I go for dinner it's always a meal for the next day also with the leftovers. The complimentary coleslaw and kidney beans with rolls on the dinner menu could be their own meal. read more

7pm Friday, out of prime rib, waited a true hour for bread at the table, 10 minute wait for silverware after appetizers were delivered, and entree came before dinner salad. Then the server was in a hurry to collect on check and must of asked 4 times in 15 minutes if check was settled. Food was good, experience was terrible. Staff cannot handle weekend dinner crowd. We love McVey's. Their lunches are a great value and very tasty. The broasted chicken is really good, but my favorite is the chicken/pasta dish on the lunch menu (South Beach Chicken?) The bruschetta appetizer is AWESOME and desserts are yummy, too. Even my teenager likes it, and he hates everything! read more

I'd say the atmosphere is country diner. I had the bone in ribeye because I couldn't resist the low price. Came medium but pretty tough. You get what you pay for. Service was good. Place got full up and noisy. House Cabernet was good. Key lime was very good. read more

I recently went to a lovely bridal shower and I was pleased with how well the space could be used. The staff was very nice and helpful and made the experience that much more enjoyable. Really good food, above average quality served at extremely good prices. Some of the best Prime Rib in Northwest Indiana and at certainly great prices. Go early, they run out of it way to often that has led to frustration and the exploration of trying to find Prime Rib elsewhere if I actually want to eat Prime Rib for dinner instead of lunch. They only serve it Fri., Sat. and Sun. The wait staff seems to be very stressed at times, possibly to many tables, not sure? No time to be very chatty, take your order, serve your order, give you your check, not rude, just not overly friendly. I have been to almost every restaurant in Northwest IN, always end up back at McVeys by comparison. Not fancy, no frills, just good food at more than fair prices. No reason not to go unless you you like to pay more and don't want drive out of Merrillville, Schererville or Highland. Our first trip to this establishment. I made reservations for a party of seven for Saturday afternoon at 5:30. We arrived about ten minutes early and found that our table was set and waiting for us. Our server greeted us quickly and offered to bring us beverages while we looked over the menu. My wife and I opted for the Prime Rib. Three bean salad and coleslaw were brought to the table along with a basket full of bread. All of this was very good. The soup and salads were brought and it was equally pleasing. Then came the Prime Rib, cooked to perfection and very succulent. It was tender enough to cut with a butter knife. The portions were more than ample. The side dishes were equally good. Our server was very attentive and at no time did we feel rushed. The best was yet to come. The check came and I couldn't believe the value. If you want nice tablecloths, cloth napkins, excellent service, exceptional food at a reasonable price, this is the place. read more

New to the area.Have tried McVey's twice and haven't been disappointed .Sautéed Lake Perch is excellent.Was hard not to order it on our second trip but, tried the Prime Rib.It was as good or better than any Chicago restaurant.Relish tray comes with kidney bean salad and coleslaw. Soup or salad. French bread and garlic bread.Your choice of potatoes.You will be full when you leave and the prices are right.Haven't tried the desert yet but will on our next visit.Looking forward to our next visit to McVey's in Lowell read more

Food was good, but wait time & waitress were not. It took over an hour to get the entrees & they were out of meatloaf, which we didn't learn until about 30 minutes after initially placing the order. The waitress was borderline rude & came back four times to get clarification on our order because apparently she could not read her own handwriting. I always order the lake perch and it is always wonderful. Other dinner items look good, but I stick with the lake perch.

Very good food, we enjoyed the white fish, sautéed shrimp, prime rib and ribs they were all delicious. There is a great ambience; the place was busy when we arrived. The service was marginal, she made excuses about how many tables she was responsible for and how long she had to work. Later she was sitting and eating supper with three other patrons and then went back to waiting tables, that should not be allowed. The signage in the bathrooms was unacceptable. read more

The only thing good was the onion rings and the warm bread! Terrible quality slab of ribs and the meatloaf looked like it was from a slice of head cheese. They only serve Choice Cut quality meats...you can tell it is like the kind of meat you get on sale at Jewel or Strack's. The flavor of their burger was no better. I live in Lowell, and eat here occasionally as it's the only place in town that serves this kind of food. The wait staff is very good. Patty is usually the one who takes care of our family, and she is excellent at her job. The steaks are good, the soups are ok, but the ownership is what makes me not want to come back here. A friend of ours who ate here at least twice a week was told that her money doesn't matter because they have such a huge clientele. This was after they were charged two dollars to split a plate which never happens because they eat here so regularly. Im sorry but a owner should never tell a customer that their patronage doesn't matter. The ownership needs to step their game up to the level that the waitresses have theirs at. read more

I used to love McVey's! But the last two times that I have been here the food has been horrible! I don't know whats going on because the food used to taste homemade but sadly that is not the case anymore! The mashed potatoes taste like they came out of a box and the fries are frozen. Ive been here twice. The first time I was blown away by the amount of food, quality, and price. I had the fish and steak with fries. It was fantastic. The second time I was very suprised from the moment I walked in. We sat down (there was only one other table with cutomers @4:30pm) and there was probably a whole loaf of bread under the table...we started of NOT GETTING AND BREAD. NOT GETTING ANY RELISHES. Then I ordered a Cesar salad and when I got it, it was a hoyse salad with cesar dressing???? Lol. Wtf? So I didnt eat more than two bites. The oerson I was eating with had problens too. The waitress was horrible she was asked to bring sour cream and some steak knives which you would think would be obvious but....I guess not. So she comes back with 1 steak knife no sour cream. I was like can ah I have a knife too and some ketchup and also we still need the sour cream. So she comes back with a knife and sour cream. Nooooo ketchup. So I ask for that...I felt like I had to tell her what her job was. So needless to say our second time was not as nice as the first. However the food was good and I will be going back.
