Been a long week and decided last minute to head to McWethy's for dinner. Great call as always! The food was delicious, but honestly, it always is. I can't recall a bad meal there ever. The service from our waitress Michelle was outstanding and we were greeted by both the manager and GM, John and Bill. Finally, server asked if we'd like a dessert menu, smiling as she said she'd be back with it. 20 minutes later, we got up to leave and she came with the bill - no dessert and no apology. Very near to my Grandfather's assisted living home, we frequent McWethy's. On the beautiful grounds of a golf course, the dining room is beautiful, filled with dark woods and large tables. We enjoy sitting at the 4-tops that hug the semi-circle of windows over looking the golf course and water. During the summer they always seem to have the AC pumping strongly, So I always wear shoes(not sandals) and bring a sweater or jacket. Apps- the crab cake, cheese curds, spinach dip, and chips and dip are all excellent. The baked french onion is also a delight. They make one of my favorite Ceasar's around, and we often share one or two of them with the appetizers and soups. Their italian beef sandwich and fish sandwich are both consistent and delicious. The Reuben is also noteworthy. The cuban is on a french roll, but despite not being truly authentic in that way, it has great flavor. They have altered the menu often over the years but currently my favorite entree is the shrimp and grits with italian sausage(add the bacon when they ask, they give you mounds of bacon on it, not that it's necessary on such a rich dish). The bread pudding is a delicious end to every meal, and is usually accompanied by a birthday dessert as we frequent this place for the many birthday celebrations we have. Although we have had many different servers, they are always top-notch. This is not your typical golf-course restaurant, it stands alone as a great culinary destination. read more

Went with a men's group the week before Christmas. The tavern was nicely decorated for the season. We had 6:30 reservations, and were seated promptly. The waiter took our drinks order, and returned shortly with our drinks, and we asked for a FEW minutes to review the menu, and decide on our meals. So far, so good. The waiter then vanished. After about 20 minutes, and empty drinks all around, we asked another server to track down our wiater. He appeared, breezed past our table and went to two other tables, and back to the kitchen. He then came out and came to take our orders. The food was the saving grace here. High compliments all around at the table. Would definitely come back. My boyfriend and I ate at McWethy's for my birthday last weekend. We had the pretzels for an appetizer, and the cheese sauce was absolutely delicious! I had French Onion soup with my entree, and it was very well done...bubbling over with cheese. My boyfriend had the soup of the day, which was a spicy gnocchi with beans-incredibly flavorful! My entree was fish and chips, and I was impressed at how crispy the fish was! The potion was enormous, and the Parmesan garlic fries were tasty. We had the chocolate cake for dessert, which was incredibly rich and full of different chocolate flavors. The only thing I didn't like was the Smoky Mary drink, and our server graciously allowed me to order something else. Would definitely recommend! read more

From the road the building is quaint and quite inviting. Once inside the atmosphere is just as nice - clean and spacious, with a beautiful panoramic view of the golf course. The menu is varied and everything I have tried was excellent (the French onion soup is fantastic). Then to top it off, the staff in both the restaurant and bar are friendly and efficient. I had never heard of this place nor spent any time in Romeoville but it was suggested by a friend and we met for lunch. I was a bit confused as to where to go but there is a sign outside that clearly tells you it's the tavern because it is on a rather large golf course. It was not crowded at 11:45 during the week but there were certainly a few tables taken and the crowd grew as the day went on. We sat at the bar and the service was above average. They have a decent wine list by the glass. I really like the interior. It's cozy but has personality. There is a private area close to the bar that has curtains and nice booths that would be really cool to sit in. I was impressed with the feel of the place because it was rustic upscale but didn't at all feel like they were trying to be. I would like to go back for dinner and try some cocktails. I should also say I was there with an industry friend and she loved it as well. Being industry, she has high standards and sometimes notices things the rest of us might not. So all of the food was seriously wonderful. I just really struggle giving a place 5 stars after just one visit but honestly I couldn't find issue with any of the food. If they are consistent, I could easily see upgrading this to 5 stars. We split a bunch of stuff, as we usually do. I'm going to start with the Scotch egg because, well, it's a Scotch egg! I usually get one whenever I see it on a menu and often the yolk is completely cooked but this one was a perfect, velvety runny yolk. It's hard to keep the yolk runny while cooking the pork (actually, no idea how to do it) but they did that. I thought the pork was just on the side of cooked properly but definitely cooked through. The outside was crispy and we both loved the mustard. I don't know if I'm reaching on this but it had a consistency that seemed like perhaps it was whipped or something. We got the calamari because any time I see calamari with peppers in it, I'm all in. It did not disappoint. It also had friend lemons and artichoke hearts, which were good. Also the aioli was solid but the marinara was like amazing. I have no idea why but wow was it tasty. We got the side of mushrooms and leeks and it was super great. Because of the cheese, it was a bit rich but still good. I personally would have liked to see a bit more leeks but everything was cooked very well. Lastly, we tried the crab cake. The pretzels are on the bottom before they sear it and they are actually decent sized chunks of pretzel. If I had to pick one complaint, I would like a bit more texture. The pretzels became soggy during cooking so it didn't really add much for me. But the flavor was on point. It actually had a collective heat after eating it for a while that I really enjoyed. Often times people focus so much on trying to make sure there isn't a lot of filler in the crab cake that it is bland and this had a ton of flavor. All four dishes were something I would definitely order again. Very good experience overall! read more

If I could give more stars, I would. I have celiac disease, so it's always nerve-wracking to go out to eat. I emailed Chef Dan and Bill the GM ahead of time. They assured me that they could modify the meals to make sure they were gluten-free. Not only did they do that, but they had separate wait staff to bring out my wife's and my meals so there was no cross-contamination there! Came here for a dinner date last night, came into a 40 minute wait which was fine because they had bar seating available for the interim. The service from the bar staff and management was absolutely fantastic; our waiter was lackluster. We sat up at the bar ordered a couple of drinks and the Ploughman's feast, which was great. There was ham, cheddar, blue cheese, chutney, sausage, artichoke, cherry peppers, olives, pickles, sliced Apple and a baguette. It was the perfect Appetizer for two, the sausage was amazing. Their house soup was to die for it was ham and dumpling. For our drinks, I ordered the Chianti which was good and my BF got the Holy Scotch. The Holy Scotch was exquisite and had subtle notes of cinnamon. Our dinners were not the best, which is why I only gave 4 instead of 5 stars. I ordered the chicken piccata, the sauce was good as was the rice but the chicken was very greasy and heavy. When I inquired why, I found that it's because they use an egg wash. I like the chicken in piccata to be slightly crunchy. My BF had the steak sandwich which he said was really good, flavor wise but just too heavy with too much butter.
