On the drive from Vancouver, BC to Portland, OR my friends and I wanted to stop somewhere in the middle for a bite to eat. I pulled out my trusty blackberry and researched a good place on the Yelp app. I was in the mood for a sandwich and this place sounded pretty good. I had a ham sub "cosmo" style - in other words, toasted. Great sandwich. I wasn't digging any of the hot sandwich options so I turned a cold one hot. Pretty good sandwiches that are convenient for on the go. The tomatoes suck! They are always mealy and have no flavor at best. It's unfortunate because I love tomatoes. Like many other reviewers have said, it's just not that good! My wife and I were disappointed in their extreme lack of vegetarian options. There was a lot of bread, very little meat, gross wilted lettuce, and overall the sandwich was dry. The bread was good (almost too chewy), but the rest I could have picked up at the grocery store on my way home. And the prices were fairly high for a simple sandwich. This unassuming sandwich shop makes the best subs for miles around. Boasting Italian style sandwiches, Meconi's will leave you satisfied. They have a wide range of choices for sandwiches and a "half" sandwich (which is probably 8 inches) is more than enough for one sitting. They also make their own bread which is a thick white loaf. It is is hard to understand why people go across the street to Subway, when you can get a better quality sandwich and cheaper at Meconi's. Gone are the days of OMG sized sammies. I hadn't been to the downtown location in a really long time and yesterday I thought to myself why not?? So I went for lunch with my sister, and althought the sammies were still yummy...there was hardly any meat on my cosmo combo :-( I understand the economy has been tanking and costs need to be cut, but it would be nice to have more than just lettuce on over half of my sandwich. Maybe they should consider reducing the size of their bread in order to match the amount of meat?!? Like I said it's always gonna be yummy...but anymore reduction won't leave any yummy to be had. P.S. the kidsdrinks come on the tray with the meal...so don't go getting one out of the cooler otherwise you'll have to pay for it read more

Meconi's is hands down the best sandwich i've had in oly since i got here about a year back. On the one hand, it's really nothing that's going to blow your mind. You won't find fancy melts and sauces and such, but on the other hand, if you're in the mood for just a good freaking sandwich, hit up this spot. The meat is good quality, the bread is fresh, and the toppings are all great and plentiful. We went in at 2:30 on a Saturday and had about a ten minute wait for two sandwiches. People that complain about that kind of wait need to just go to Subway. But I guarantee that Subway won't taste half as good. A whole sub is easily enough to fill you up. We split a large macaroni salad, too. It was OK--tasted like potato salad, just with macaroni. Parking is a little rough though. I recommend parking on a side street and walking. I'm not sure what the big deal with this sandwich shop is. Long wait in line, A-ok subs and macaroni salad with heavy gross mayo. The tables and windows were pretty disgustingly dirty also. The service was friendly at least and I did see a table of kids taking selfies like it was some big event to be here but I've had a better sandwich experience at a certain chain freaky fast place that blows this one away. I was in Olympia having FUN working on my daughters car - rear drum break replacement :( I had to pick her up for an appointment and this was the closest option, except for Subway, where we could stop on the way for lunch. I had their Hot Meatball sub (on wheat) - that is my standard by which I compare places. This is probably the worst one I have ever had, not horrible mind you, but definitely not up with the best. The meatballs were OK, but the marinara sauce tasted like it came straight out of a food service can. My daughter's combo looked OK, although it appeared to have lots of lettuce, tomato and onion and very little meat. Given the parking, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back. read more

This is just a simple place to go order sandwiches. Tell them what you want. You will have to pay extra if you want your cold sub toasted. They do have a "make it a meal" plan to add chips and pop with you sub! This place seems like a popular place since it was packed and the lines were long (but it moved). I must have been in line for like 5 minutes. They do keep the lines moving! They will call your number when your meal is ready. I enjoy Meconi's (the downtown location - I can't speak to the others). The subs are tasty; they keep it simple on the variety of ingredients, which are quality. The hot subs are pretty great, especially the Italian sausage; with the recent addition of the Philly Cheesesteak to the menu, I'm completely satisfied with the selection. Nothing to write home about, but good, solid subs. The new downtown location, while lacking the certain charm that came with their previous run-down shop, is spacious, clean, and a nice place to sit and eat (and people watch, especially during the legislative session). The only reason I don't go more often is the price; it's between $4 and $5.50 for a half sandwich and between $7 and $10 for a whole sub. While they're tasty, I can't entirely convince myself that they're worth the cost. If you're in Olympia for more than 3 days, you should definitely try Meconi's; it's an Olympia institution. I have eaten at this place for years. It is a staple in Olympia. That being said the sandwhiches are just average. I had a roast beef sandwich and didn't think there was very much meat on it. The half sandwich is a good size, 8 inches I would bet. What you get is just a straight up sandwich. Nothing special. Nothing to make it more than ordinary. And as other people have noted in their reviews, if you ask for more than ordinary there is a charge. They charge to heat your sandwich, they charge for anything beside the basic sandwich toppings. It fills up during the lunch hour, but the line moves quick and I have never had a problem getting in and out in under 15 minutes. It's a decent local alternative to Subway and Quiznos and if you are in the neighborhood give it a try. I use to go here all the time when I lived in Olympia and whenever I go back to visit, I go here. This place never disappoints. I even got the chance to bring home one of there hoagie rolls straight up back to Portland. Very delicately I walked with this amazing piece of bread around town. Then the sandwich building began and nevertheless delicious! Great sandwich fixin's. The bread is definitely the star in my opinion and don't forget you can get it toasted. The bread it comes on is incredible, and perfectly complimented with some yummy kettle chips! i try to eat here as often as i can convince the wife to stop on her way home from work! Ate here for the first time today. Food: Incredible sandwich. I got the Italian. A "whole" sized sub was almost $10! Ouch. But, it was huge. It's really two sandwiches. Service: The only reason Meconi's doesn't get five stars from me. The line was almost out the door. I noticed that there were two registers but only one being used. I called ahead for pickup but had to wait 5-10 minutes in line with everyone else. While I was waiting in line I noticed one of the staff going on break--during the lunch rush? It was worth the wait but it seemed a little under staffed. Atmosphere: A bare-bones deli. Like all great delis, it was really cramped. Six years ago I would have given Meconi's five stars....Not anymore. The prices of their sandwiches have skyrocketed! Now, they dust their sandwiches with a minuscule amount of wafer thin, meat fragments and a ridiculously thin amount cheese. Great lunch spot. The sandwiches are always what you should expect out of a deli sandwich. The style of food reminds you of a lunch counter/deli on the east coast. Nothing flashy, just good grub to keep you going. Soups and (potato, macaroni) salads are pretty good. Service is always great and to the point. This place is near and dear to my heart - both locally owned AND some of the best damn sammiches I've EVER had. No frills, no gimmicks, just great ingredients paired with fast and friendly service. Generally this place is pretty good but I've had two experiences now. First time was a salad that was supposed have chopped ham and it had nothing but big chunks of what was supposed to be salad. I let it go as just one bad experience, now today I go for a club sandwich and what did I get, bread lots of lettuce a a few chunks of ham and what looked small traces of turkey. Here's the skinny: nothing here is skinny. This quaint little sandwich shop standing directly across from a subway repeatedly proves it's worth and why it has been able to stay afloat across the sub sandwich king across the street. Their sub sandwiches are phenomenal. I ordered only the half since it was significantly cheaper. I also asked for a small potato salad, drink, and cookie. All things together I spent twelve dollars. When the food arrived my mind was blown. The half sand which is almost the size of a subway footlong! Amazing. Ordered Italian sub. Oil was dripping down from my sandwich and all over my bowl. Every bite I took, gobs of mayo was squeezing out the sides. If I knew they were going to put THIS MUCH, I would of asked for it on the side. I was literally the first customer there in the morning. Not busy at all. They should of handled my sandwich with more care. Because of my first experience like this, I'll still go back to Jimmy Johns for their Italian sub. JJ has fast service too, but they don't drench the condiments on the sandwich. The broccoli cheese soup was good though, and fast service. After frequently the Lacey location often we were in the area if Olympia and decided to try out this location. We were very disappointed. The restraunt was very dirty despite being empty. The cashier was rolling pennies vs cleaning the restaurant. The cook came out with our food complaining that they were out of many of the sandwich toppings and kids drinks. So one sandwiches were minus toppings and one sandwich was wrong all together despite reviewing order with cashier and ours being the only order in process. While we were dining another customer commented on the lack if clean tables as well, finally a 3rd family came in after us and had to ask for a low table to be cleaned for them the cashier went around and did a poor job wiping a few tables. And just brushing off the crumbs to the already dirty floor and walked right by a table that needed busing leaving it dirty. For $20 for one sandwich and one kids meal I expect more than a dirty restaurant and an apethtic staff. read more
