Still the top boba spot in the Udist --- for fobby children. It is the most busy and most 'feel like you're in Asia-esque'. They make my favorite honey black tea, and lavender milk tea here is my second favorite next to Shinka. Surprisingly enough, Mee Sum also has the best Chinese food in the Udist. Pork belly sauce over rice $3 is a good way to get a cheap, mildly filling lunch. Downsides: - This place smells bad all the time. - There are always loud fobs screaming at the top of their lungs. - Wifi quality is terrible. - Sometimes the staff they hire is so rude...not lately though. I came in because I was starving and my bus ride home wasn't for another 30 minutes. I ordered their taro bubble tea, and it was definitely not the best I've had. Somehow, it lacked a lot of flavor and I didn't even want to finish it. There are definitely better spots on The Ave for a bubble tea treat. I love their bbq pork buns! A lot larger than what I'm used to. The bread to meat ratio might be a bit too much for some people though. Stopped by when I was in the U-District and didn't feel like cooking dinner. I got the black pepper fish and a green milk tea to go. There were already quite a few people eating when I went in. They also have this huge bookcase of manga that you can browse through while waiting for the orders to come out. I feel the prices are pretty decent and you get a great deal of food for your price. The food was also decent. Don't expect anything taste bud amazing. The milk tea is also average. I can see this as a popular place for the local college students. Mee Sum Pastry was our guinea pig for LIving Social's new delivery/takeout service. The delivery was lightning quick - food was at our door 20 minutes after submitting our online order. Impressive! The prices are also very reasonable; $9 gets you a very hefty, meat-rich portion. Mongolian beef was very spicy, despite ordering it "mild." Just be warned! The cashew chicken was mild and tasty, with lots of veggies. Rice was NOT included with our order. Altogether pretty good food for the price, free delivery over $15; we'd probably try it again but remember about the spicy factor and get a side of rice next time. read more

Meesum is my go-to for black milk tea, earl grey milk tea, and grass jelly milk tea. I don't know how many stamp cards I've gone through over the past few years! I honestly go there mostly for those drinks, so I can't say much about the rest of the drink menu. It's one of the more authentic black milk teas I've had in the U District, and their tapioca usually have the perfect QQ texture and sweetness. Occasionally, I'll come here for their pork and century egg congee, pork and mushroom over rice, or popcorn chicken. But for the most part, it's just for one of those three drinks. Some of their drinks, including the earl grey, take longer to make, because they actually steep the tea when ordered. The cashier is usually pretty good about letting you know if it takes longer though. NOTE: $5 minimum on cards. They also charge a little more if you ask for no ice. read more

Oh me sum why you gotta do me like this. I had the best couple of visits when I ordered food, but today I waited a grand total of 40 minutes to receive a to go order. I love the food, the salt and pepper pork chop is fantastic, I just can't believe how long it took for that order to be put through. I get it, it's busy and there's lots of people ordering food. I love bubble tea and I love hombow. The three days a week I am in the U District, I try to make it to Mee Sum at least once. After skimming through the past reviews of Mee Sum, I think that they have worked out the kinks! Every time I go, the always have hombow, especially the BBQ Pork ones. The bubble tea is awesome, even better than I remember from Gossip (they sometimes had tapioca that was a weird consistancy or too hard!). Recently I also tried the popcorn chicken and it rocks! Came here for the first time wanting to try their fried chicken nuggets, after reading all the rave reviews about the place. The chicken combo meal included friend chicken, of course, rice with meat sauce, veggies, and Taiwanese pickled veggie that I cannot name in English. Overall the chicken was pretty good, closer to the taste of home than others I've tried. But a combo plate for close to $8 is still pretty pricey. I went to Mee Sum throughout college for bubble tea and their popcorn chicken meal. Even for a couple years after college, I returned to Mee Sum whenever I craved that. But last week, I ordered takeout and I think I'm getting too old for this. The popcorn chicken meal was delicious, but I felt terrible afterwards. My fiancé ordered the chow mein, which was a ton of food, but he didn't feel great after eating it, either. His leftovers lasted two meals! However, he noticed that after sitting in glassware for a day or two, all the oil congealed to the bottom for about an inch! Gross! I would still get bubble tea from here, although Sharetea has probably taken a chunk of their business. The only flavor I don't recommend is the pudding bubble tea because there isn't any actual pudding topping in it, just pudding flavor, which was disappointing the first and only time I ordered that flavor. Prices: Cheap-ish. The popcorn chicken meal and chow mein were both under $10. If you want to pay via credit card, there is a $10 minimum. So if you are ordering for one, then I suggest adding either a bubble tea, a dessert or side pastry, or paying with cash. Overall: Good and cheap college food. Good bubble tea. read more

I like Mee Sum because it's cheap and has Chinese & Taiwanese food options without going into International District. I'm not a fan of the atmosphere inside Mee Sum so I usually order to go. Some of my favorite dishes are pork bell over rice ($7), popcorn chicken meal ($8), and honey sesame chicken ($10). They also have yummy hum bows - I would recommend getting them earlier in the day when they are fresh. Good food for college students on a budget but I'm sure it can't be good for you. read more

Mee Sum is a surprisingly large café; plenty of room for underage kids to hang out while getting high off of syrupy sweet "teas". Reminds me of cafes in Rowland Heights, California. Too bad the drinks didn't measure up. I ordered a lychee tea with lychee boba and hubs ordered an iced mocha with original boba. Total was $6.10 for two ~12 ounce drinks, a pretty good deal in my book. Note, they don't accept American Express but they do except Visa or Mastercard. The Good: Boba was perfectly cooked. Sometimes it can get too hard or too soft, spoiling the whole drink. Mee Sum's boba was just right. The Bad: Unfortunately both drinks were too sweet. Pros: Their melon milk bubble tea is BOMB! Popcorn chicken is BOMB. Cons: They sometimes run out of their supplies and won't be able to give you what you want. This happens like half the times I've been there which is pretty unprofessional. Also the service is not that great. As much as I like this place, I think it deserves only 3 stars. Ever since the remodel, the atmospherics of the place got better. The booth seats are nice for college group meetings but sometimes you have 1 person hogging the seat (which bothers me a lot). They have a lot of board games here and manga (that are mostly in Chinese). As for the food, I like the BBQ pork buns and curry buns but you can't rely on them having them before lunch time. Since they're so popular, some people snatch all of them even before you get to grab one for yourself. As for the entree dishes, I guess they're alright. Too rich for my liking. Lastly, the bubble teas! Ever since they took away my favorite bubble tea (blue berry milk tea), I've been pretty iffy about getting milk tea here. I do love their lemon grass milk tea and Jasmine milk tea but I guess, I start to prefer other places over Mee Sum. If they have mini tapiocas, maybe I'll come here often again once school starts. read more

The only thing problem I had was that they used too much oil but overall great taste. I've come here several times for a quick meal. The food is ok but I think the choices are a little limited. They don't have many vegetable dishes. But their ma po tofu is pretty good. It's definitely not the ma po tofu in China but is good enough in the U.S. I think. Their milk tea is pretty good too but I would still recommend WOW for milk tea. Their bubble tea has remained the best in the u-district for years now. GREAT selection and they really know how to make it properly (as well as lots of other options). The hombow is pretty decent, too, but they're often out of many of the choices by 6pm. The service is really inconsistent, which kind of makes sense being in this college area, it feels like there is always a new batch of students behind the counter. When they've got good employees, they are GREAT. But sometimes the folks behind the counter are disinterested and even rude/dismissive. Often crowded, so it can be a bit of a wait...but sometimes you can just walk right up to the register. The place is clean, with a nice variety of tables and seating. read more

This is more of a 2.5 star rating. This is a pretty low ranking for a good BBT place, but the recent experience I had wasn't so great. Maybe it was because we had a huge delivery order? Nonetheless, they messed up a lot on our order and some of our food/drinks didn't turn out right. First, one of the drinks from our group order was the Matcha Milk Tea...Normally I love this drink and thought my friend was crazy when she said it tasted really bad. She wasn't lying...It tasted super powdery even after she mixed it. It was so bad that she couldn't drink it anymore. Maybe it was just an off day, because it usually isn't like that. Second, they forgot one of our bubble teas and when they brought it back, they tried to charge us for it. THE EXTRA DRINK THEY FORGOT WAS ON THE RECEIPT AND WE PAID FOR IT. The delivery guy had to call back to the MeeSum and talk with a lady about it even though it said right there that we already paid for it and they forgot. The manager lady even talked to us over the phone, arguing with us. Okay... Third, my chicken chow fun wasn't that good. It was super oily and bland. I was expecting more flavor but I guess you should just stick to their bubble teas and their more renowned dishes. I would give this place 4 stars just for their drinks but this experience was one that will make me think twice before ordering delivery. read more

This place is a perfect place for a decent meal. The portions are fairly decent for the U District, I highly recommend their Mongolian Beef and pineapple fried rice. There bubble tea is also pretty good, I especially like their Lavender and Taro flavors. I was hardcore craving some honey walnut prawns last night and ordered some from here. i also ordered green beans. the prawns were tough and rubbery, and almost felt like they still had the peels on. the way they were fried wasn't the typical way for Chinese food, it was more like... the way chicken nuggets are breaded. I like the light flakey tempura style that you would expect normally. the green beans were very bland, despite being COVERED in garlic. I couldn't really taste anything. weird. this morning was a whole new can of issues, if you get my drift. didn't feel any better on its way out than it did going in. sooooo... I won't be back. I wish I would have read reviews first. I was too excited by my friends app that we were ordering it through to pay attention to that... you newfangled city-folk have everything cool. read more
