Surprisingly, there are few choices for Chinese delivery in the U District. Mee Sum offers pretty standard Chinese food fare, lots of crispy, salty options. Their buns are pretty good, too. I had the curry beef bun and a sesame bun, the curry beef wasn't as spicy as I'd liked but it definitely had a warm curry taste, I'd recommend it. Eh, I think this place is overrated. However, my roommate has insisted that I inform you that she thinks it's the shit (in more or less words, and maybe a little bit of rewording). However, at this point I still have not had one good experience here. My first time coming here was when I first moved to the U-District. The Mee Sum at Pike Place has the most AMAZING hum bow, so I was thinking they would be very similar (due to the confusion of having the same name). I purchased a chicken hum bow and bbq hum bow. Wow, I've never had a hum bow that was so bad I could not stand to eat it.....but I could only manage a few bites out of each before giving up and throwing them out. I tried coming back for the bubble tea since my roommate constantly raves about it along with most of her friends. I tried the red bean bubble tea, but it tasted a bit chalky which seemed to be due to using a powder and not mixing very well. Finally, the last time I was here was due to my roommate dragging me here (ok, maybe not literal dragging...but I always make her go to Oasis, so it was my turn to go to her favorite bubble tea place; though, I did not go happily!). I got the strawberry milk tea, which is my regular drink at Oasis and what I usually get to compare bubble tea places. Wow, this was the worst tasting bubble tea I've ever had in my life. It tasted like strawberry flavored medicine, to be exact it tastes like these nasty strawberry chewable zinc vitamins by Zicam. Since I had paid almost $4 for it (including the credit card fee), I tried to force myself to drink it....however, it was so bad I just wanted to throw up every time I took a sip. I can't remember what my roommate got, but it tasted like sprite and was really overkill on the sweetness. I would give them one star, but since my roommate loves this place and the cashiers are pretty nice I gave them 2 stars (though if I could give half stars I would give them a 1.5). here is where I go for all my bubble tea cravings, and usually I just leave it at that, but today, I decided to brave it and try one of the steamed hum bows. I love hum bow, but am always a little worried about just how long these things sit under heat lamps. I have to say that it was nasty. isnt the steaming method supposed to keep the hum bow nice and moist? well, I wasnt sure it was possible, but I think either the heat lamps or vigourous oversteaming killed the thing. it was way too dry and had me digging through to the center just to find something moist..in this case about a teaspoon of bbq pork..which just wasnt enough to save the experience for me. so, I am sorry to have to give only two stars here....but, I will say that my 2 stars are solely based on my hum bow, not the bubble tea which I usually am drawn here for. for that, I would give 4 stars.. which leaves me with 3 stars, because, of course I will go back for the tea, but only the tea... ok, I have to add a gripe about this place. Okay. Okay. I have to brace myself for this, because I need to make some serious caveats. Mee Sum is a decent joint in terms of atmosphere; it's clean, spacious, and has decent service, and there's a lot of dining options, so you can go drink-snack-meal at your leisure. Of course, it's also a chain, and can't escape the pervasive smack of whatever the Chinese equivalent of Sysco is. The hum bow is waaaay too much dough and not enough filling; the things are near slow-pitch-softball sized, and it's basically a glob of (decent) dough with some meat wished over as an afterthought. The rest of the food is unremarkable - nothing to object to, but nothing you would write home about, unless your home is Yelp, which mine apparently is. But. BUT! Such bubble tea! It's good bubble tea, or at least it's good bubble tea for a city that has no regular access to the institutional food-service wonder that is Quickly!, and it's cheap as beans with plenty of flavor and service options. If Mee Sum was just a bubble tea shop it would get four stars from me and they could give away their overrated hum bow to homeless people to use as warm bedding. read more

The baked Pork hom bows are large and pretty yummy. The filling had lean meat and was slightly dry. In years past the filling was more but they have cut down the filling portion. I went to the Pike one only a few weeks ago for the first time so I was thrilled another store has opened up so close by to campus. This is not your ordinary Chinese food that you can just get at a supermarket or at China Express (ick) and China First (double ick). This place has the salty pastries I have been missing from California: the steamed chicken hombows and the sticky rice/chinese sausage/shrimp/pork wrapped in bamboo leaves. I do think they need better advertising. From looking at the window and the counter most people didn't seem to know the "pastry" shop doesn't just sell sweet desserts and a few bbq pork buns. Good thing I snaked my head a little to the side as I was ordering and noticed a steamer behind that counter holding soon to be my precious chicken hombows. I also noticed other goodies hiding behind the counter not prominently placed in the window up front. My coworker was disappointed that he ordered before me and didn't see the other stuff hahaha. I think they should but on the store front something about the unique salty pastries (photos) so people know this isn't the old Gossip place where you come AFTER lunch to get a drink and a snack, but rather a place where you come to get lunch because My friends and I made a meal out of the salty pastries because that is how these hombows are supposed to be eaten: as lunch with a bubble drink! read more

Poor customer service. The wait is long and server rude. I placed a phone order for lunch for their popcorn chicken not the meal, the person answering the phone said they'll have it ready in 10 minutes. I waited 10 minutes to start walking to the restaurant. When I was there, they asked me to pay and after paying I waited for another 20 minutes before they called my order. I came here with my friend who goes to UW and lives fairly near to here, and he's definitely a regular. It wasn't exceptionally amazing but it satisfied my craving for fried rice and a taro milkshake! I ordered the pineapple fried rice subbed with tofu, which honestly just tasted like regular fried rice - the pineapple flavor was pretty absent, but it was still super tasty! My taro bubble tea milk shake was alright. It could have been sweeter and the tapioca pearls were mushier than hoped for, but it hit the spot. Additionally, the workers were super chill and were super willing to sweeten my friend's green tea bubble tea milk shake when he asked. My only complain was one kind of out of the establishment's control, but there were soooo many people in there it was almost a fire hazard, lol. As far as bubble tea, milk tea, smoothies, and shakes go.. Mee Sum is the business! Whenever my girlfriends and I are craving a cold, sweetened beverage, we always opt for Mee Sum. We were skeptical at first due to the restaurant's danky outer appearance. However, upon entering the restaurant, the interior is quite quaint and docile in decorations. The employers are friendly and are more than willing to greet each and every customer with a sure-fire smile. I always like to change up my orders, whether it be a Green Apple-Kiwi smoothie, a chocolate milkshake, or coffee milk tea. I have yet to try the coconut milk tea and banana milkshake. At this point in time, it's all about Mee Sum. Move over WOW. The prices are significantly cheaper than WOW, and that's not even the best part! Mee Sum has a full pastry bar and lunch/dinner menu. My girlfriends and I have yet to try out the menu, but so far so good in terms of its cold beverage selection. Can't get enough of Mee Sum! read more

I am a huge fan of Mee Sum for one reason and one reason only. His name is Nicholas Tse. Also known as DM or "Dirty Mee Sum." This man is a legend. The most gorgeous employee to ever grace the halls of this Chinese establishment. It was always such a blessing to gaze upon his chiseled jawline and imPECcable body. Nick is truly a man amongst boys and when I enter Mee Sum, he's the only thing I see. Forget the (delicious) food, all I want to eat for dinner is Nick. Right across the street from Bartell's on 45th and U Ave. the service is great with many flavors to choose from and you can choose bubble tea, milk shake or smoothie with tapioca or many flavors of jelly. Just went by this new place on the Ave last Fri with some friends, had a Japanese bubble tea and a curry bun thing, it was actually pretty good especially the curry filling, also I think the owner came out and gave me my tea drink that was a nice touch indeed, kind of busy place though at night but still got in and had a ball meeting up with some people there. Overall pretty good place for a bubble tea joint. The tea was just right the bubble things were fresh and the tea was good. read more
