I wanted to report about a female employer who works at Megill's Garage. Recently, I was involved in an accident and the company Megill's Garage tow truck took my totaled car to their nearby location. At this location, there was female hispanic/black employer who's a smoker that works at the front desk is scamming for money. You're not allowed to even take your personal belongings that was inside your totaled vehicle until you pay off your liability first, which is around $400?! That logic is ridiculous. She even insults me by calling me a "fatass". In all seriousness, should I consider calling the police and report this very suspicious business practice behavior and unreasonable, customer service?! It is beyond common sense and the misconduct of customer service from this female cannot be forgiven. It feels predatory and they only prioritize on profit and money over concerns of their victim customers who ended up in their tow garage location. read more

DO NOT Ever do business with McGill's no matter how much you need your car or truck fixed simply don't do business with McGill's. I will explain why this may be a lengthy review. My girlfriend and me took our 2010 Infiniti FX 35 to McGill's to have them look at it and potentially get the issue fixed. So the issue we were having with the car was the windows all of them would not roll down the sunroof would not open. The car would not lock with the key fob or with the button on the door. The key light was on the dash. The combination switch for the directional signal when you put the directional single to go on right the wipers would come on. The headlights would come on and the rear wiper would go on. When you put that same handle to make the left signal work that works as it should. The windshield wipers handle works as it should however, the rear wiper did not work. So we took it to them at McGill's. They come back stating that it needed a combination switch. So $710 later that's $$569 and change for the part( combination switch) plus the diagnostic fee. So we were told that the part would arrive in 3 to 5 days. It was not there in 3 to 5 days and we were being generous and giving it five business days. The part did not come in on time. Allegedly, they told my girlfriend the part was on backorder, which is a bunch of crap. So however, the one mechanic that they have there who is a very nice guy he got the car to lock with the key fob and the button on the door like it's supposed to he got all of the windows to roll down in the sunroof to open and close. However, when we did pick up the car, the windows would not roll down when the car was running. He said that the car had to be just in the run position for the winter to go down he showed us and the windows would go down, but not while the car was actually running as in the motor. So a few days later, I decided to go with a drive-through I was willing to shut the car off and just put it in the run position to get the windows to go down to go through the drive-through well subconsciously I didn't do that and I happen to roll down the driver side window and all the windows went down while the car was running strange huh. So when they finally got the part in the combination switch with, they say the car needed we brought it to them. We brought it to them on July 22, 2025 at 9 o'clock in the morning. We were literally the first ones there so they had the car all morning afternoon and evening and guess what the car is not fixed why? So the mechanic put the new combination switch in and guess what the car is still doing the same exact thing That it was doing before the new combination switch was put in. I made the mechanical aware that the body control module was making noise. When I filled out the paperwork, I clearly stated that I wanted them to look at the body control module to refresh it and or possibly replace it When I wrote that how do you get that? The car needs a combination switch just because the one part of the combination which is going haywire. Then the mechanic says that the old combination was wet, but it wasn't wet with water or anything sticky it just had a very thin layer of an oily substance so did the garage put the oily substance on the old combination switch to make it look like it actually needed the new combination switch? So again we went there right before they closed and we were physically there watching the mechanic try to do his thing with his snap on tool scanner, and guess what the new part was installed and the car was doing just like I said above the same exact thing that I was doing with the old switch. They overcharged by 300+ dollars for that combination switch when one could've been found online a lot cheaper a lot cheaper. So will the car be able to be working again like it's supposed to because the mechanic did say that he could not get into the car computer? Well, why is that again like I said like I wanted them to look at the body control module that's what I feel is the actual problem is the body control module and not the combination switch they basically took my girlfriend and I for a ride price gouge a part that could've been bought for $300 cheaper. Then the one employee named Nikki stated to my girlfriend and I that she wasn't gonna deal with us yelling over the phone at them first of all I was halfway across the room living room and I want to make sure that Nicole a.k.a. Nikki knew that I was talking and if she could hear me so we said good night and we went down there then we were confronted by somebody with a beard. who's on video who stated that I was yelling at him when I was not yelling at him. I was just talking very stern to him to try to get my point across but the one mechanic that was actually working on the car is a pretty decent person. If I could give a zero, I would! Not only did the mechanic replace the wrong part and charge me for it, they also damaged another part of my car. My car broke down the day after I picked it up from Megill's and when I took it to the next mechanic, they shared that there were additional new repairs needed because of the negligence and incompetence at Megill's. Decided to give this place a try again because of their low priced vehicles.... I bought a car here previously that broke down within a year but wanted to see if it was a fluke. The two idiots who were supposedly working couldn't be bothered to help me when I arrived.. We asked several to test drive a car we were prepared to buy in cash that day only to get an attitude from the blue eyed short tempered employee. He then told me I CANT test drive the car and to give the keys back...... the reason we had to ask so many times was because there was another vehicle blocking the one I was interested in. Towed my Subaru with the rear wheels rolling, and destroyed the drive train. Even had a dolly in the bed

BAD. Maybe he just hated me. Maybe because I'm a college student from out of state, he thought I was the one in the wrong, a pushover, and can tell me whatever he wants. I'm from New York. My car was brought to his shop after a speeding car entered my lane and veered me off the road, rolling my car down a hill. Yes, I made it out miraculously uninjured. I'm still freaking out about that. So anyway, car was brought here. He (I'm assume he was the owner but I won't give names) was at first fairly nice. When my mother called, he gave her the details what was wrong with the car. He's aware that she is in NY and hasn't seen the car. He reported that we had EXTENSIVE body damage, front and back bumpers had were falling off, roof had damage. Car was dented. The car's bumpers were completely in tact and fine. No dents. And at this point, my mom is comparing pictures of the car that was taken at the accident scene, and she calmly states that Saturns do not dent. Which is true. They shatter, but do not dent. Instantly, this man became furious with her, telling her "she shouldn't do his job for him" and yelling that he can't work with people who do not trust him. I arrived today to pick up my car, 3 days after the accident. Total cost to get it out of there and move it to my friends' house is-- get ready-- $740. CASH. He did not accept any form of card. ALSO. He demanded that we leave, YELLING AT US to get out. At this point I'm crying because I'm just trying to get information, I'm traumatized and I'm not very good at handling situations like this. I have never been treated so badly in my life before. He was downright rude, ignoring us, and being INTENTIONALLY mean. He refused to give us details on the car, claiming that he already went over it with my mom, with me, and that he "didn't have time to play my games." I wouldn't have even gotten a copy of the paperwork if someone else did not come in. Rude. Asshole. Rudest ever. Do not go here if you want to ask questions about your car, because questioning him apparently means insulting him. I think we have a right-- as the car owners-- to know WHY I'm being charged $740. STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY!!! All the people who threw in a 5 star rating are either fake, or his friends. Because this person is a maniac and I think he had some kind of psychological disorder and all that crap and no one would give him a 5star LOL. He behaves like a split personality. A friend of mine met with an accident on CT 15 on a bad Saturday. so the cop called these guys in to tow the car off the road. The car's radiator was gone. My friend and I went to get the car on Monday. And he charged us $420 for towing and storage. The car wasn't fixed yet, and for dropping off the car in our parking lot, he wants another $130. So we felt that $130 is a lot, and asked him if we could have our friend tow it for us. He was like "No, I would tow it on to the street for $90 and you can have your friend tow it to your place, end of the story". I, and my family, have been customers of Megill's for years for a few simple reasons - impeccable customer service at a fair and reasonable price. I could go through a laundry list of experiences over the years, but here is the latest example: My car had a flat tire a week before Christmas. I put on my spare tire and, annoyingly, it too was flat. I called up Megill's and asked if they could send someone to give a little air. Within 20 mins, they were there and filled me up quick - free of charge. I drove around on the spare for a few days, a little nervous, so I called up Megill's and asked what they could do. I explained that I had plans to buy new tires after the holiday season, but that money was really tight at the moment. I have a Buick Regal - the absolute cheapest tire I could purchase was $80 per tire + labor it would have easilly been over $100. I spoke with Mac (the owner) and he said to bring it by, and that he would look for a used tire to put on. I dropped my car off in the afternoon, and with an hour got a call back saying that they had found a spare used tire, and that I could pick it up. Quick, efficient service. When I got there, my bill with labor was $60. $60 - with a tire and labor - I think anywhere else it would have cost about double. And the "used" tire that was put on is loads better than any of the other tires I currently have - it's practically brand new. No other mechanic I know, would work harder to help out a customer given a tight budget. And this is just one example, it has happened time and time again. In my experience, they work mostly on American cars - I've personally bought two buicks and a ford off of them - all were well priced, clean, and ran for years. It's hard to find a good mechanic these days - Mac and his team over at Megill's are A-1, and my first choice in the New Haven area. read more

These guys are crooks, plain and simple. They pay people off to watch over parking lots so they can tow people at a moments notice. This is how they make their business. The only thing I could advise is if you know Megil's watches over a parkign space, stay the hell away from it and whatever businesses inhabit it. They WILL tow your car if they can. read more

Hit a curb during a snowstorm and the front left wheel control arm bent. The part itself costs anywhere from approximately $40-$100 on the pricier side. They can easily get the part wholesale because they're a shop so it should be cheaper. They had the audacity to charge $295 for the part, and for 2 hours of labor (which is a reasonable amount of time to fix the issue but the price for the part is not). All in all, they charged me $507 for everything and the alignment wasn't even done. The front wheel still has a strange and noticeable noise when driving and the steering column is super loose still and alignment is off. They told me they drove my car and it was fine...I wish I had just done this myself at a buddies garage in New York, but chose a place to do it quickly at a local shop because i was afraid it was a tire rod and could further damage my car, and my buddy doesn't have the computer system and tools for an alignment which is why I brought it to them. Never going back to that shop for anything as I'll have to assess the damage and pay another place at least $100 for an alignment. I learned my lesson going to a new place for some help. read more

I got two opportunities to test their services. The first one was towing service. The battery of my car died and they did show up fast and did replace the battery. Later on they replaced the tires for new ones I bought with them. They were efficient, fast and they charged a fair price. Thumb's up. read more

I'm reading these reviews and I can't help but to believe that these reviews are based off of people having their cars towed for various reasons like parking where you shouldn't park. I had to have my car towed because the alternator died. They came and I decided to give them a shot. I went to pick it up, The guys there were so friendly and made me feel comfortable. Stay away. Stay far, far away. My car was towed here one evening recently, and getting it back was a living nightmare. When the tow guy finally showed up to give me back my car (I waited outside in the dark for 2.5 hours, after he said "come right over"), he was belligerent, physically intimidating, and screamed (no really, screamed) at me to get off of his property. I am a woman and ended up having to call the police--that's how scary this guy was. I'm also a mental health clinician, and this is the kind of person who you're likely to hear about in the news someday. A good mechanic is kind of like a good dentist--once you find one, you don't go anywhere else. I now live 30 miles away from Megills, but I still won't bring my car anywhere else. Back when I was broke, I had a crummy car. A REALLY crummy car. a 92 Chrystler Lebaron that always had a different problem. I would bring it to Megills expecting a massive bill, but not once did I ever get overcharged or felt like they were trying to pull one over on me. In fact, once I had a gas leak and was half expecting to have to junk the car--turns out it was a leaky hose that they replaced. Total cost: $20. I dont like how they do business here. Got in an accident and car was brought there during a storm by police. AAA couldn't tow it home cuz of snow. Owner made me pay $300, then I had to pay 50 bucks the next day cuz of 'storage fees' which he made it seem like I wouldn't have to when I was there. Every towing company preys on accident victims and these guys are no exception. If your car gets towed there and has to stay over night, make sure there are no valuables in it... ABSOLUTE THIEVES!! After showing up 2 hrs after I called and acting like he was doing me a huge favor, the drives demanded extra payment (in cash!!) to he would not tow my car as agreed. No receipt and no credit cards... hmmm... nothing shady about that. When I told him I'd really like a receipt so I can get reimbursed by insurance, he got very angry, to the point where I thought I would need to call the police to intervene. Eventually he agreed to tow my car, after shaking me down for the extra cash. I followed him in my dad's car to the tow location. He got lost, then called me from his cell to tell me I would be responsible for the extra mileage. What a joke! read more

I didn't use their services until I crashed my car, when they were called to tow it. I found them to be most helpful and very knowledgeable. Had I been living in the area, I would certainly have become a regular customer long before that. What struck me is their willingness to provide an honest advice and help find the best options, given my situation. I have no doubt that their service and honesty are far superior to the shops I used in the past, and I am thinking that from now on, all regularly scheduled maintenance of my cars would be done there, even if I have to drive an extra 25 miles from where I live. read more

I got my vehicle towed from a gas station 0.5 miles away to their shop and they charged me $80. They also did work on my vehicle without my consent and charged me an additional $100 before I could take my vehicle. I would not recommend this place! read more

The owner is a total psychopath. Me and my boyfriend were in a very serious car accident and the vehicle was totaled. After spending four days in the hospital for a collapsed lung, my boyfriend was finally released and we (including my mother) drove to Megill's to retrieve personal belongings from the car. We went inside to speak to the owner and he immediately had an attitude with us about the car, claiming he never got paid for the tow (mind you we thought that insurance had already covered it) we did not know my boyfriends insurance did not include collision so they did not pay the tow. We found this out by calling the insurance company while at Megill's in hopes they would speak with the owner and work it out. That's when we found out about his coverage issues. The owner screamed and yelled at the insurance agent and said "I don't give a shit about you insurance people" he proceeded to swear and yell at this poor woman who has nothing to do with the situation. After that he refused to let us get any of our things, including my purse or anything else. My boyfriend went back over to his car to just see what he did have inside so he would know what to grab. The owner ran out and started yelling and screaming at us like a lunatic that we were not getting into the car and to get off his property, he was extremely aggressive and totally unprofessional. I understand it is his job but he knew we had just got into this horrific accident and he was treating us like animals. He clearly has no idea how to work with people on a normal and level headed manner. He could have simply explained to us the situation, but instead chose to use intimidation and aggressive tactics. Sorry Sarah but I have to agree with Allison. I brought my cars to Megill's for years as well until the owner showed his true colors. The timing belt on my car went and the owner himself informed me that there may be engine damage. Needless to say he said he would not know anything until he took a look at it. A week passes and I hear nothing. I call the garage and he says that my car is ready. So I go in to pick it up thinking there is no engine damage. When I get there he tells me that there is engine damage. He said that he tried to call me at work but I was not there. But instead of calling my cell phone number, which he also had, he figured he would just change out the timing belt. Yeah I am still scratching my head about that one as well. Why would you change out a timing belt on a car that has a damaged engine? He goes on to tell me that the car is drivable but it will not perform like it used to. I asked him could it get me to and from work until I bought a new car. The owner says yes. So trusting in my mechanic which I have had work on my cars for years I paid him ($400). That is a mistake I will never make again. Always turn the car on before payment is made. I turn the car on to it sputtering. I pull the car off the lot thinking it just needs me to step on the gas. The car breaks down not even a block from the garage. So I go back to him to tell him that the car broke down. With an unsurprised look on his face he informs me that if I have Triple A he could tow the car to my house and walks away. So I am standing there thinking you want me to pay you more money to tow my car after you fixed it and it broke down. First of all he lied to me telling me the car would run and be able to get me to work. It could not get me the 4 miles needed to get me home. How do you let someone leave from your establishment knowing that the car runs intermittently and cannot get past 15 MPH. But the thing that really got me was that gasoline leaked from the engine. The car was not safe. I wound up donating my car and let them know that it needed a new engine. The tax credit more than made up for the money I lost to fix the car . Needless to say I agree with Sarah that the staff is great but the owner is a crook. So my advice is to take my lead and never take your car to Megill's. A family member's car was towed to Megill's. He called them a few days later to schedule a pick up of the car by AAA. However, the employee was very rude: no one was at the site and wouldn't be for a few hours. After asking in a polite manner how long it will take for them to send an employee TO THEIR BUSINESS, the man on the phone said "a few hours" and hung up. So, he had to pay for that day PLUS Sunday even though they are closed Sunday and no one was there Saturday. I feel like it is a dirty business unless you are personal friends with the owner. Also, their math is way off... they said it costs $24 per day plus money for towing. They told us it will be $400, but $24x7 is only $168 and if towing was $100, that's only $260. DON'T DO IT!!!! Buying a car here was the worst mistake I've ever made. Megill's clearly doesn't inspect any of their vehicles before selling them to the public and this shop does not stand behind their inventory at all. Mac is the main guy in charge and his snake wife handles the paperwork end of the business. I bought my car from them cash and asked if they could give me a discount. His wife acted appalled at the idea and refused. She said that for a good running car like the one I was buying, anything less than their asking price wouldn't make them any money and that I was lucky to find a deal like theirs. Reluctantly, I handed over the cash. I was a broke college student at the time and made it quite clear at the beginning of my car buying journey with them that I was giving them all of the money I had and I needed something reliable. Mac swore up and down that the car I purchased was great and that he himself had driven it for a while before putting it out on the lot to ensure that it was up to par. All the while he refused to warranty the vehicle, but I proceeded anyway because I had very few options and I was referred to Megill's under the impression that they wouldn't steer me wrong. I was told their were honest and reliable people. It wasn't until less than 3 weeks after I'd given him all of my money that the truth came out, The car started overheating and the check engine light came on. I called Mac and told him about it and of course the first thing he offered was to tow it to his garage (at full price). So, I managed to get it over there myself and he said he'd diagnose it and split the bill with me. Split the bill???? Didn't I just give him every last dime of my money when I bought this supposedly reliable car??? He claims he spent 2 hours diagnosing the car and charged me $90. Then he said he couldn't find anything wrong with the car...how convenient! After I insisted that he further investigate the car he said that he had a "sneaky suspicion" that it was a bad head gasket. Then he told me that his repair shop doesn't do head gasket jobs anyway, so it would be my problem to deal with. I took it elsewhere and spent over $2,200 (which I had to borrow) on a head gasket job. This wasn't the end, either. Repair after repair added up until the car eventually broke down. This garage coldly took advantage of a poor college kid and quickly wiped their hands clean afterward. They are snakes!!!!! read more

my Bmwx5 broke down 10/11/17 & my service contract sent Megill's towtruck of New Haven to flatbed me & my vehicle to the dealer..the driver Rich called ahead to tell me he was on his way & he was the Nicest guy!! Very polite, friendly & professional!! i was very impressed how fast he worked & was a very good tow driver, never taking is eye's off the road.. he really seemed to like his job i can only imagine that would be because Megill's must take care of their employees.. It shocks me to see this business with a bad review. I had a horrific car accident(not faulted), and when I got out of the hospital I tracked down my car and called them. I identified myself to the man who answered the phone, and before and he even spoke to me about my car, asked me if I was the one driving the vehicle. When I said yes I was, he went out of his way to ask me if I was alright. I completely broke down crying, and he listened to my detailed account of the accident, tears and all. After 15 minutes on the phone, we then talked about my car, which was totaled. They kept their business open an hour later then normal just to accomidate the only time that I could get a ride to Connecticut (I'm from New Jersey) to clear out my belongings. When I arrived there, I met the owner, and found out that he was the one who spent 15 minutes with me on the phone listening to me cry. The manager of the business actually packed up all of my stuff for me (I imagined he did this because the owner informed him that I had a cast on my leg and my left arm was in a sling as well.) I have never been to any business that went out of their way to make a customer feel good after having such a tramatic experience. Two weeks later I called Megills and spoke to the actual tow truck driver who had towed my car the day of my accident. Knowing I had no vehicle, informed me that not only are they a towing business, but they do mechanic work and they sell quality used cars. That following weekend, I traveled down to Connecticut and purchased a car that to this day an oil change is all that it has required from me. I can't say thank you enough to the owner, his manager and a super friendly tow truck driver. Thank You McGills. Thank You! read more
