I visit Mehran a couple times a month. Fridays have the best lunch buffet options. Butter chicken and chicken keema. My everyday favorites are the daal and kofta meatballs. My only gripes are that i eat and spend too much when i come here. I would be fat and poor if i came every day. read more

We had a late night flight into DC. Decided to have some Indian food before heading home. Mehran blew us away the Achar chicken curry was amazing. As well as all the other foods! We ordered several different things so we had left overs for lunch the next day. The service was fast and very on point checking in with us and helpful. Bring the kids some curd when food was a little too spicy. Really felt like a home restaurant. The ambience in the restaurant was cozy I would say this is where it was lacking wish they would spruce it up a bit. But all in all very nice experience here! This would be more of a 3.75 star rating, but I'm rounding up to 4. I stopped in to grab some tasty Pakistani food to bring home (to the Fredericksburg area) for dinner, so I needed items that would travel well, could get cold and then be reheated. Upon walking in, I noticed they had a buffet.. BONUS! The guy behind the counter told me the buffet to go is $9.99/pound. I ended up scooping up $22 worth and it didn't seem like a lot of food. I asked if it included a naan, he said they're $2, but he gave me one. I brought it all home, heated it up and it was very tasty! Their chicken saag is outstanding! Channa is pretty tasty. Chicken Tikka is smokey and flavorful and lastly, their kofta has the hard boiled egg and is awesome! All items had the right amount of spice and heat (which would be considered 'hot' by American standards), which I really enjoyed! The naan was tasty and easily reheated to be perfect again. A greasy spoon buffet that you might have to consider when you are starving and don't want to eat the industrial offerings of Wawa's grill across the street. Nothing is delicately prepared, and everything is heartily oily. Little to distinguish one dish from another. The goat curry and the chicken curry both had pools of oil floating in it, and the taste was not too distinguishable. Each of the meat pieces had either bone or fat...nothing fine or fancy. Not the most hygienic or well-polished interior. The waiters are gruffly humorous. If you don't mind putting up with a full to stuffed feeling later, you will be okay here. Had been here for takeout thrice which had been always good with respect to food . Once had ordered via grubhub and they missed sending garlic naan ( for which I was charged) . Contacted restaurant and their reply was they will adjust it next time . How in the world they will know and keep a track of it next time ? :D But now after the experience of buffet twice , I have changed my mind. Had been today for dinner buffet which was not good. The service was good though. The interiors are very mediocre. Regards to the buffet, For chicken , they had only two dishes , chicken haleem ( which was only good) and chicken curry ( this had very big pieces of chicken which was not flavorful ) Apart from that , there were two beef dishes and rest vegetarian in main dishes. Tried chicken biryani and fried rice, fried rice was very bland while biryani was very spicy. Both were mildly warm and dry. For desserts , tried gulab jamun ( good but had lot of color in it) , sheera which was cold . Hygiene was not good. Table was not completely clean, the water jar had stains( and hence we refrained from drinking from it ) . Price ? 20$ for single person lol plus a mandatory 15% + service charge . This was for a weekend buffet. I truly think the price was not justified for the food I had . Have been to many other buffet places which had been really good and less than 20 bucks . Total of 48$ for two people buffet . Quality of food is poor with chicken tasted as if it was cooked days before . I usually rate 2 stars only when the quality is way below expectations. I would recommend to avoid it for a buffet until at the least it is improved as per the price they charge. Will try other restaurants next time for buffet. read more

This rating is not about food, the chef here is amazing. This is about how cheap the restaurant owner treats the customers. For the past ten take out orders I keep requesting to please give my side dish in a separate foam carry out box. It spills in the car, makes mess, all my food mixes and I end up trash half of it. All this just because the owner want to save $10c per box. It is just serious common sense. And the reason I got was that if we provide you foam container we have to give you the side a little more. This is a second location for the original Mehran @ George Washington University - a place I used to frequent in my days of penury when I was a student at the above mentioned university. I did go to the original a few times after graduating for old times sake, but even though the level of my penury is still debatable, my taste buds have definitely evolved and become more complex to like that food anymore. Which was quite a heart breaker coz it felt like I was losing a loved one. But good news, since there is a new Mehran in town. This place is more upscale in decor and food and service is good too. We ordered from the a la carte meny and tried the Tandoori Chicken and Goat. both were really good - cooked perfectly with the right amount of spices - one of the best tandoori chicken I have had recently! I actually really enjoyed the late lunch/dinner buffet here. I believe it was $9. The service was kind of lackluster; I came in really thirsty so that's probably why I noticed it took a while for them to bring out water. However, they gave us a huge pitcher of ice water for the two of us. That was nice. I also liked the naan bread basket (very generous portion), minty sauce, and small salad they gave us for the table. Nice touches. You can walk in and go straight to the buffet. It's a little small, regarding food variety but I definitely enjoyed everything. The tandori chicken- OMG. So freaking good. I was satisfied just eating that with the rice and bread. There was a nice subtle BBQ char taste to it. The curries were all good (all chicken I believe). There was one that was a tad spicy but water helped. The potato side with cabbage was a good addition, lentils I could've passed, and the chickpeas were yummy. Overall, a hidden spot that's pretty good for the price. Mehran is one of my favorite gems in the Herndon area. This restaurant never fails to satisfy my craving for Pakistani food and it's one of the first places I encourage my friends to visit! FOOD: Come for the buffet, but only if you're a meat-eater. They have lots of options that appear to be different every time I visit. Their chicken tandoori is especially delicious, especially after having visited quite a few less authentic establishments in VA that claim to have good chicken tandoori. ATMOSPHERE: It is a little quiet as the room is quiet spacious, but I like that. This is a common place for families to visit and it's always pleasant to hear the diversity of language spoken here. SERVICE: The service is nice. They offer complimentary naan bread and make sure that you are supplied throughout your meal. The sad thing is I've been going in/out of Dulles for years and years and did not find Mehran until 2018. How sad is that?! Doing an overnight at Dulles to catch an early flight out and within a 3 mile radius, the options were Burger King, and Irish Pub, and MR. No contest!! I preface this review with the caveat that I have never been to Pakistan and will probably never come close, and the only other Pakistani place I've really been is Kabob Palace. However! I do love a good paneer and they must have cooked the spinach in aromatic oil bec/ it had a something something to the spinach, and it was good. Also, loved the stewed goat dish- totally tender and really satisfying. This place is not for ppl who cannot handle extra grease. It's true, it does pool quite a bit but let's say this is the people's food, not the 1% Four Seasons version so take it for what it's worth. The daal was extra extra cooked, so it had an extra smooth, thick consistency. There was also a funny dish that was spicy and really fatty. Again, interesting flavor but not for the faint of heart. It's kinda nice this place is here. Frankly, Hawaii had VERY insufficient establishments of the south Asian persuasion, and same thing for Charlottesville. They have Indian, but no Pakistani. Might be splitting hairs, but variety is the spice of life. A whole lot of Paki places sprung up in DC lately, and Kabob Palace is no longer the only game in town. For an approximately $9 dinner buffet, this place is pretty darn good. It's tucked away off Ox in Sterling near the airport. Now, don't let the look of the food scare you away. This place is Pakistani, so the Indian dishes you're used to are modified a bit here and they look a little less-appetizing on the buffet to be honest. They sort of look like varied mushes and greasy pools of sludge, but just try to get over it -- because set over some rice with a side of the great nan they have here, it's all so spicy, flavorful and delicious. Definitely try the lentils and the tandoori chicken. I had two plates and was overly stuffed. This isn't the classiest or cleanest-looking place. In fact, it feels sort of like eating in the back alley of the Baghdad black market. But the service is OK, it's cheap and the food will hit that Middle Eastern spot until the next time you can go out for a more traditional sit-down meal. read more
