Beet and lima bean purée special
Gauravi P.

We can here for an early dinner. Service was really great. Our server asked the kitchen to make the double awesome for us even though it wasn't on the menu. The double awesome was double awesome for sure! We also ordered the beet and lima bean purée special which was absolutely delicious. I was literally licking the plate it was served in! We also ordered the kale and egg salad with dinner and the peaches and cream for dessert. The cookie in the peaches and cream was a bit too sesame for my liking but the rest of the dessert was inhalable. We also spotted Top Chef winner Kristen Kish at dinner which was pretty cool. Come to Mei Mei if you want great service and to enjoy delicious small plates of food!

The Double Awesome - scallion pancake sandwich w/ two slow poached eggs, VT cheddar, local pesto $7 - 10/2012
Vivian C.

I was excited to try The Double Awesome - scallion pancake sandwich w/ two slow poached eggs, VT cheddar, local pesto $7, but was disappointed by the black spots on the rather thin scallion pancake... and this was after having picked up my order, only to be told that they had given me the wrong order, thus continuing my wait for a bit longer. The rest of it was okay and nicely hot and gooey/moist, but when your order is made upon ordering, shouldn't greater attention be paid to keep your lunch from burning? It probably also didn't help that I'm a fan of the thicker chewy/crisp type of scallion pancake. This was actually my second visit to Mei Mei's. This second trip was during the Fenway Alliance's Open Our Doors event and the truck was parked at Christian Science Plaza area. The first was at the Food Truck Festival along the Charles a few months prior. On that first visit, I tried their braised beef dumplings, which I had overheard others enthusiastically gushing about. Maybe it was the high expectations created by this free advertisement, but I found the dumplings to be a bit doughy and the beef filling to be rather dense and chewy. I wasn't impressed.

Chorizard

I found Mei Mei to be a decent lunch truck. The food was certainly tasty, it just had a few flaws that give this truck an "A-OK" rating in my book. The Chorizard (play on "Charizard"?) is a bowl with chorizo, black beans, and carrots, topped with feta and fried shallots. The chorizo was flavorful, juicy and savory. The pickled carrots cut through the savory chorizo with a vinegary tang. The apple dressing that covers everything in the bowl is a good source of tangy flavor; the black beans need that extra kick, and the apple dressing helps deliver it. Unfortunately, I found almost no fried shallots. Towards the end of my meal, I found one sitting at the bottom of the bowl and thought to myself, "Oh right, there were supposed to be fried shallots in here". A big handful of fried shallots would have given a nice salty crunch, I missed them here. The black beans were hit-or-miss. Some were cooked great, but some were still a little hard. They didn't seem to have much seasoning on them, and were a little bland eaten on their own. The biggest issue I had, was that the bowl felt incomplete: there wasn't any rice, or some big base ingredient. It felt like I was eating all of the toppings to a rice bowl, just without the rice. Since it was missing a good base, it wasn't as much food as I'd like. The prices are a little steep for the amount of food you get. All in all, I'll visit Mei Mei every now and then if I'm looking for a lighter lunch.

Mei Mei Truck

First off - this a sibling run food truck. Which I think is amazing. I give them a lot of credit for being able to pull that off. If my sisters and I ran a food truck it'd be like watching an episode of Jerry Springer while someone made you lunch. So again, props for being a successful family run business! Secondly, free sample of a green tea macaroon? Yes please! I didn't even think I liked macaroons but I was ready to push an old lady out of the way to get seconds. (I only refrained because I didn't want the Mei Mei truck crew to think less of me, especially since they're going to be seeing me a lot). My third point - before I stop numbering my paragraphs - is that I haven't even finished eating my food yet but it's so amazing I felt compelled to right a Yelp review ASAP. I'd also like to note, that I generally have a strong dislike for Chinese food. I think I break down and order it about once or twice a year at the most. So for me to literally run down the street for Chinese food would shock most of my friends/family or at least have them think I was obscenely drunk midday at work. Ladies and Gentleman THIS is a food truck. Forget grilled cheese, forget gimmicky, forget cupcakes. Mei Mei Street Kitchen is what the Boston food scene has been missing - what makes us all salivate with jealousy as we watch food trucks from other states. Not only is the food fairly priced and delicious but it's also really creative and unique. I almost ordered the whole menu but with the lunch crowd I settled for 2 items - a giant scallion pancake stuffed with pulled pork, cheddar and a farm free egg. Oh not to mention spicy srirachi ketchup on the side (or slathered all over this concoction like a delicious fried crime scene in my case). The other a set of 3 braised beef and blue cheese dumpling, which are so big they could be a contestant on the biggest loser. The pancake sandwich is packed with flavor, soft and crispy at the same time with the perfect proportions of both cheese and pork. The egg just adds another punch of flavor. The scallion is worthy of some accolades itself and would put many chinese restaurants to shame. This "sandwich" is enough to make even the strongest vegetarian pretend the meat is tofu just to get a taste. The dumplings are stuffed with moist flavorful beef that tastes like its been slow cooked for hours. Unlike other recipes which incorporate blue cheese only to have it melt away into oblivion - the dumplings retain the full flavor of the blue cheese in every bite (without it being too over powering). I almost side stepped the homemade soy vinegar sauce but am glad I gave it a try. It adds another layer of dept to the dumpling. Alone they are just as powerful but with the sauce they transform into a powerhouse of goodness. Most of the people who ordered got the kale salad which looked amazing. I can't wait to try it next time. One of the biggest downfalls for most food trucks is the price of the items. You're paying for the novelty and not the meal. At Mei Mei the portion size/price is unmatched at any of the other trucks I've tried (or most restaurants for that matter). I paid $15 for the pancake, dumplings and a ice tea and am stuffed after eating only 1/2 of everything. Bang for your buck - they haz it! Also I should definitely mention their commitment to locally sourced and sustainable ingredients. For a small business just starting out to go the extra mile and help out the community as well as be eco friendly - it's great! Overall if you're looking for some quality, creative and well priced food with a friendly food truck staff to boot - definitely give Mei Mei a shot. I have pretty high food truck standards and they didn't let me down in the slightest. I'm excited to see what the future holds for this little slice of food lovers heaven on wheels.

I remember when I first heard about this event. My initial thought was "oh look another way NYC and…read moreBoston can compete". Actually, I thought it was just another event New York City could dominate Boston at. But that's just the New Yorker in me. I kid, I kid. I've got nothing but love for Boston's food trucks. I was mostly interested in what trucks New York was going to come with as lets be honest the only food trucks I ever saw in NYC were the halal and hotdog trucks on the streets. And let's just say I was taught never to trust street meat. Good thing the website is good at listing the trucks and their websites so you can scope out the competition beforehand. Surprised to see almost all of them had websites. The first time this event was held in Dewey Square. Contained completely on the farmer's market island. My god it was a mess of lines and the wait for some of the trucks was horrendous. People had to plan strategically in their groups in order to hit as many of the trucks they wanted to try. Food truck competitions are serious business and apparently you call out a competition between NY and Boston you're going to pull a crowd to show some love for their hometown. It's understandable... even if the longest lines were from two NY trucks. The second time around the planners did a lot better location wise. They spread the trucks out along the less trafficked Greenway. Thank god they learned from last year. Also line control was handled a lot better. No funky zigzag across 4 different truck areas here. And there was also plenty of grass or curb to sit and eat. Now for the food. This competition has a habit of bringing an array of different cuisines. I had a plan to visit two trucks this time. Morrocan truck Comme Ci Comme Ca and Indian Chinese hybrid Momos & Buns. Most of the NY trucks had a limited 'Throwdown' menu. While I did pick up the kofka couscous from Comme Ci I would have really liked to try a few of their appetizers that I noticed on their website. The couscous was delicious and I think this was the first time I ever really tried Moroccan cuisine so I don't have anything to compare it to. But I'll definitely hunt down the truck when next I'm in NY. Momos I never got to. There was quite the line and I was not that patient. But while I was walking the area I stumbled upon the Cupcake Crew and tried their maple bacon cupcake. Wow, that was incredible. Although I think bacon makes most things taste better. In all it was a pleasant day with delicious food a relaxed atmosphere and I can't wait until next year's.

My favorite so far has been the gyro pocket with the lamb and beef filling. It's a generous amount of meat atop some lettuce and banana peppers that give it an acidic finish along with some diced tomatoes. They do add a sauce on top that taste a bit like thousand island (my only complaint is that sometimes they put too much). If you see the truck, stop by and order a pocket, you won't regret it!
