Stopped by this bakery after seeing a sign "people love us on yelp" but wasn't impressed. There isn't much variety and the prices are pretty high. I guess I am just used to $0.75 egg tarts and $1.25 buns but that's comparing to Chinatown in SF. My favorite thing to get at a Chinese bakery is the BBQ Pork buns. At Mei Wa, the bread was good but the meat inside the bun wasn't. The quality was poor and it wasn't as flavorful as the normal pork that goes in it. I will come again to try their desserts and possibly their bun bao to give it another go. read more

We stop by the great wall after a walk and I was craving dim sum. This has limited items for dim sum, but for what they have, it's pretty good. We got an assortment of dumplings: siu mai, har gow, chive dumplings, etc. We also got a cream corn and ham pastry. These dumplings are humongous compare to other dim sum places, which makes eating them very satisfactory. The flavors are pretty standard. The price is pretty good as well. We ended spending a little under $20 and was pretty full. I like that you can choose how much of each things you want rather than getting a plate of 4. Definitely a good place to grab quick standard dim sum for affordable price. The pastry was also very very yummy. The bread was super soft and fragrant. Concept is like 85degrees w a tray, paper sheet and tongs. The 'dim sum' items they have styrofoam containers for. They do charge .40 for card purchases under 10.00 so there is that. This is an excellent Chinese bakery located in the Great Wall Shopping Mall. I got some almond flavored pastries here that were very good! They weren't too sweet and had a great flakiness to them. The place is not too big but is very popular. Sometimes you have to be patient to pay for what you want or if you need help with something. They prefer that you pay cash here too. They have a huge variety of different pastries here which is great considering that the place isn't too big. They make the most of their space! This little bakery turns out some seriously fresh and tasty pastries and dim sum! They have ALL the chinese comfort baked goods like the egg custard, fruit cakes with that light whipped cream, and hot dog in a bun! As if that isn't enough to get excited about, they also serve up some respectable dim sum classics. My go to's here are the jung (sticky rice), shu mai, and baked char siu bao. It is crazy affordable, with each large piece of jung costing a mere $2 and each baked good costing about the same if not less. The quality of the food seems average, if not above average. The place is a madhouse on the weekends, and they do a great job restocking the shelves with food. They do need a more efficient check out process - one lady bagging and ringing up the customers is just not going to cut it when they get busy. I waited in line for 15 minutes to buy $12 of food. Let me tell you, it was worth it! Try coming on a weekday to stock up on your chinese comfort foods and to beat the rush! read more

Homemade pastries now available in the Great Wall Shopping Mall! Ever since the Valerio's Tropical Bake Shop shut down, that void was temporarily filled by Le's Deli & Bakery across the street. Open now for several weeks, Mei Wa offers a limited selection of baked goods micmicking what we find in Chinatown a la Yummy Bakery. One type of pastry I always love to get at Chinese bakeries is the almighty Pork Sung Bun (other names used: pork floss or Rousong). The dried stewed pork topping is slightly salty and sweet, the bun's stuffed with a secret savory sauce that brings it all together. To date, Mei Wa's unique sauce filling makes it a million times better than any other place that has offered it. Compare this feeling to pork bellies: without the richness of the fatty portion, how can a pork belly be pork belly? Other items, the creme bun and egg tarts are above average. Two types of egg tarts, the regular and the Portuguese style, need a flakier and stiffer crust; I prefer the Portuguese filling more with its smoother egg mix though it could stand to be thicker. Price? They go for about $1.10 or so a piece and with what I had eaten, I will come back. I hope they start offering lotus bean or taro fillied buns or better yet, fresh sponge cake! read more

Mei Wa Bakery is a Chinese bakery located at the Great Wall Mall in Kent. It is right next to the arcade area. The baked goods here serve as a complement to the selection you will find in the bakery section at 99 Ranch next door. This bakery is seemingly smaller than the Chinese bakeries you will find in the International District. Though I think that is just the perception since they have numerous bakery cases here with just a few things in them. If they combined all of the goods into one big case, it may seem visually a bit larger. The setup here is mostly self serve. Grab a tray and pick out what you want. Though you will need to ask if you want a few of the cake items. There are bakery items here that overlap with 99 Ranch like the buns for instance. But you won't find any breads here. The pricing here is cheap. Some things seem cheaper than in the I-D like the BBQ pork buns. Tried three items that came out to the paltry sum of just under $4. The BBQ pork bun ($1.20), pork floss bun ($1.20) and a Portuguese egg tart ($1.10). The BBQ pork bun was tasty. The meat filling is just how I like it. They also glaze the exterior of the bun which gives it somewhat of a stickiness so beware. The pork floss bun was good too, though I kind of prefer the one at Kiki Bakery in Redmond a bit better (for its texture). I would get this bun again though. Lastly is the Portuguese egg tart. This item is pretty hard to find in the Seattle area. I have tried this before in Macau and even at a KFC in Taipei. I thought this version was okay, but it seemed to taste like a regular egg tart. The coloring is the same, but the sides of a Portuguese egg tart are shaped differently and it has a bit more creaminess. It is not a bad tart, just not quite on the same level as the ones I had in Asia. I would still say to get them since they taste good. Just set your expectations if you are comparing it to previous versions you may have tried before. Though it is a smaller Chinese bakery, I would recommend Mei Wa. Not the greatest selection, but what they carry is pretty good for the Seattle area and the prices are great. read more

Been here for few times and each time without disappointment. Their dim sum are barely okey but the bread and cake are horrible as asian bakery. The dough are way too hard and cannot last a day. The baking knowledge are limited without good quality outcome. Even the frozen bread at Ranch99 are better then their fresh make bread. I suggest the owner to try other Asian bakeries in Chinatown, Bellevue to learn what real Asian bread are supposed to be. (I'm comparing them to Sheng Kee Bakery, which is the bakery that I'm used to seeing in Chinese malls back home in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I find the product here doesn't hold up as well to Sheng Kee's, which has more intense flavors and more tender pastry overall.) I was looking for Japanese Cheesecake and I found it here! It was amazing!! They have so many delicious goodies! I also tried the tiramisu cake and it was delicious! Solid buns. I love how they have their BBQ pork buns hot rather than refrigerated like the ones inside the 99 Ranch bakery. Steamed buns are delicious and the way they're stored (in a bamboo steamer rather than a glass case or cold plastic container) is genius and aesthetically pleasing. It's a bit of a tight space so it's a lot easier if you know what you want and politely manuver around other people. My favorite person is an older lady who loves when I have small change and coins. She's always like "I love coins". It's great. It's a small business, pay in cash when you can to support the fam. The quality of their sesame balls, fried glutinous rice dumplings (Ham Sui Gok) have changed with less fillings, more of the glutinous rice cover & the prices went up at $8.85/order $17.70 for 2 orders of shiu mai & same price for the glutinous rice dumplings. The restaurant in front of the shopping center, Imperial Palace offers the same food with better quality, better price & the convenience of a sit down restaurant. If I could give zero star I would. Do not buy the dim sum. They are not fresh. I purchased shrimp dumplings, the suspect they had gone bad stupid me I bought them anyways. The color was off too. I asked the cashier she said they are made fresh, I even asked her to smell it. When I brought it out to the car, 3 other family members confirmed that they are indeed bad. Yuck. Be honest. This bakery reminds me of childhood. I came here on a whim, after stopping by the Pho To Chau and the grocery inside Ranch 99, to check out their goods. The whole set-up is very modest, and simple. On one side is a regular bakery, and on the other side they sell steamed pork and barbecue pork buns, shu mai, etc. Yum! They offer the usual cakes and pastries at Chinese bakeries I have been to: Beef curry buns Cream, corn, and ham Beef filled flaky pastry Mousse, and other, cakes of various flavors Napoleon/Mille Feuille (absolute favorite pastry, have yet to try it at this location) Pig in a bun/hot dog in a bun Cream bun Egg tarts (the batch they made during my visit looked burnt on the surface, but it was still super delicious) Japanese style cheese cake Sponge cake Almond cookies Biscottis & a bunch of others I can't remember off the top of my head. Good quality, and it's clean. The service is good, but can improve. The young woman seemed so rushed the whole time and only a total of 5-6 people went through. From my observation, it is likely because she was trying to be attentive, but couldn't figure how to divide her attention. It may be useful, if they read reviews on Yelp, that she greet those in order of those who came in and realize it is alright to take it a bit slower and be more intentional. In other words, she doesn't have to greet another customer as soon as they step into the store, especially if she is already helping someone. Otherwise, she has a sweet demeanor. This place is located right by the chaos of ranch 99 market, and could easily be missed or overlooked. We ducked in for a snack while waiting for our table at Jang Soo Tofu. Each Time I go to Great Wall I come to Mei Wa to get their Dumplings. Their Pork and Shrimp Siomai is really good. They have good egg tarts, bread with pork floss, pork and chicken steam buns. Their breads and dumplings are always made fresh everyday. It can be busy during the weekends so be sure to be extra patient with the wait. I don't know what happened to my blueberry cake, it vanished from my box in about 3 seconds, even before I could snap a pic. The cake was light & fluffy the blueberry filling was fresh and slightly tart and that cream is your typical Asian style so not too sweet.
