I came in Saturday morning for dim sum and I had a great experience! I was in a group of 6 and we were seated quickly. My friends knew what they were doing and immediately started rapidly ordering a bunch of dishes. I wouldn't have known what to get so it was great to go with them. Title: Extremely disappointed -- poor food and rude service I recently visited Mekong after returning from a trip to Boston and was very disappointed. I ordered the ginger lobster hoping to treat my mom, but the lobster was rubbery and inedible. Other dishes were low quality and the meats were tough. I want to love this place, but just can't. Mekong Palace is one of the few 'cart style" Asian restaurants remaining in this country and probably only one of two local ones. This classic way of serving Customers is rare and I hate to see it disappear. The food here is okay. Not too notch, not the worst. It is a challenge getting what you want to eat. The Cart Servers speak little English, so it's hard to know if they're placing an order for you or not (for items not available on the cart). What I could not tolerate were the hot temperature and high humidity in the room. They have commercial sized fans, but unless you're sitting directly in front of one, it's of no help. We got there towards the end of the lunch dim sum and only assuming all options were not available. But for the options that were, all of the items were tasty. The fried rice however was dry. One thing I like about this place is they have the dim sum carts that come around- something that I feel has gone away in a lot of place. I've been to Mekong plaza but never went far enough to see this restaurant it is amazing. A line on a Sunday but not a long wait. Dim sum immediately at your table and it is so good. Walk through the double doors and it's located inside the plaza towards the back. This place was huge. I have to say this place was better than San Diego but not better than Garden Grove. All the items we got were $5.95 which was a steal compared to CA prices. Came out under $40 plus tax and tip. The chicken feet on this day needed to be steamed longer. It wasn't falling off the bones. The har gow skin was also too sticky and tore at first attempt of pick up. Not sure if it's always like this. This restaurant and the plaza shopping mall itself are a little-known secret of Phoenix. I had no clue that Mesa had such incredible Chinese food until my husband took a job in the area. As soon as they wave you in for a table even before you sit down the dimsum carts arrive with plates of tasty morsels of goodness. Although I have this four stars, it is our #1 spot for authentic dim sum currently. In person, the experience is genuine. The food is top notch and fresh the majority of the time. Our only complaint is the service can be really slow regardless of how busy they are. This is definitely one of those places where you'll want to have extra time to dine. The ambiance is fine. They have a huge area with lots of tables. It feels more like a cafeteria than a date spot, but dim sum is about variety, not really ambiance. Delivery is also very convenient. The great thing about ordering online is that the menu has detailed descriptions. In person, you're just eyeing things since the wait staff seem to expect that you already know what everything is. Been coming here off and on for years now. It's my relative's go-to dim sum place in the Valley so whenever we have dim sum with them, we always end up coming here. We've come for dim sum here both on weekdays and weekends and unfortunately what I've noticed recently is that there is not much difference in selection between the days any longer. This wasn't always the case. Before, they used to have many more dishes offered on the weekend days, we're talking at least like ten other dishes, that they didn't offer on the weekdays. But now however, there were maybe less than five other dishes that they didn't offer on the weekdays. Some of our favorite items from their dim sum we always end up getting include, the bean curd skin rolls, shu mai, har gow, beef cheung fun, and the shrimp cheung fun. We also get other items but those tend to be a hit or a miss depending on the day. For example, the gai lan on one day can be on point but overmature on another day, becoming tough and harder to chew. Overall, service is understandably either a hit or a miss depending on how busy they are. Not much for ambiance since it's a sectioned off space right next to the food court. First off, let me say sorry for sleeping on this place. I grew up in the Bay Area so that'sy Dim Sum cred right there. We all know the valley doesn't have much of a selection of great dim sum, I usually would go to the Great Wall off Camelback if I'm craving some, but I live in Gilbert and it's a drive. We came here on a Sunday morning right around the time they opened up and it wasn't packed, so I was a little worried, but we were seated promptly and they had a few carts out. Let me just say the Har Gow and Sui Mai here is good. They were big and the Har Gow had large pieces of shrimp. One of my favorite dim sum dishes is sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf... these 3 were bangers. We didn't see any tarro or turnip cakes on the carts and saw them by the kitchen where they had someone frying dishes to order and we asked for one and got a turnip cake freshly fried/grilled and was piping hot as it should be. This was another hit for me. Chicken feet, I always order and it was probably the best I've had in AZ. Again this is given out of the limited choices we have in the valley. The fried shrimp balls my girlfriend loved. The didn't have a dipping sauce for them as some places will offer a sweet and sour sauce or like a mayo type sauce to go with it. Not everything was a banger, but still good. The Tarro puffs were good, but I would have preferred more filling as to how big they were, I wanted more meat. This was the same for the Ham Sui Gok (fried meet puff) the dough was thick and there wasn't enough meat filling to balance it. The chow mein was the first thing we ordered because my girlfriend wanted a specific crispy fried noodle dish and saw noodles not knowing (she's a rookie)... the chow mein was really average and it would be something I wouldn't order again. The seating is here seems open because of the high ceiling and it's part of the entire indoor plaza and it was nice and cool. Service was great for us, we had no issues. To give you a reference on price, before tip, it was a little over $70 for just the 2 of us. It was 10-12 dishes and we had leftovers because we wanted to try a lot, as you should with dim sum. I don't know why people were complaining about this place and if you say this place isn't a good spot in the valley for dim sum, I would like you to make a suggestion as to were in the valley you would prefer. For me, this is my go to spot for now and there is still more I want to try here. Let's be real not everyone is going to like every dish for dim sum and I doubt anyone will try every dish in one sitting from a restaurant... but this day they gave me bangers for the dim sum dishes I enjoy. read more

TL DR: If you're looking for traditional Cantonese style flavors, or really authentic dim sum, that rivals out of the bay area, the greater Toronto area, or other metropolitan areas with a robust dim sum scene this place is not it. Ambience: Consistent with that of a Cantonese style banquet hall that you would find in any major metropolitan area. Clean, lots of red, fresh seafood. The good : Staff is very multilingual. Staff is able to speak. Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. Staff is also friendly and attentive. Best part of the restaurant was the staff. The tea: Chrysanthemum tea was made very well. Whatever base they use is fantastic. Tea tasted fresh very clean, really helped with the meal. The stuff that could use work... dim sum: Firstly, very very limited selection of dim sum. When you googled/yelp dim sum this is one of the few places that comes up in the Phoenix area. Unfortunately the selection of dim sum is very limited. I'm wondering if I went during the wrong time which if I did I can't fault them for that but do you know that if you go later in the afternoon or evening there's a very small menu. Please see picture attached to see the options of dim sum. I ended up ordering the har gao (shrimp dumplings) and the sui mai. I also went on a weekend. Assuming there would be more options. I was very incorrect. Both were very bland. There was a chew in the shrimp dumpling. The wrapper/skin was fine. The sui mai had zero flavor. Skin was again fine. Not worth the cost. 2/5 Cantonese style barbecue : Char siu and the duck Hands-down this was the worst Cantonese style barbecue I've ever had in my entire life. The meat had no flavor overcooked and dry. The duck lacked any flavor on the skin, the accompanying duck sauce, really elevated everything, but that was not enough to rescue meats. It comes with a lot of rice. Also does come with bok choy, which was done well. The price for this dish alone was about $20 which was comparable to what you might find in the bay area. However, it does not taste like what you would find in the bay area, Vancouver, Toronto, Portland, or Las Vegas. I was also really surprised that on a Sunday at 4 PM they ran out of the roast pork and some other staple barbecue dishes. This is the first time I may not venture back in a restaurant. I realize I often give places more than one opportunity, but there was so much negative with regards to the taste of the food, the flavors of the food where I would be very hesitant to try again. If you're craving Cantonese style cuisine, a place where maybe they don't have dim sum, but where the flavors are more authentic go further down the road. There's a little café with an excellent looking menu that would be my recommendation. read more

This dim sum spot has my heart. I've been here several times with different friends and it never disappoints. I should've written a review long before but always end up in a food coma after because my eyes are bigger than my tummy. The duck today was amazeballs. The tenderest of tenders meat wise and crispy heaven on the skin side. The fried shrimp was on point but there were so many that I took some home. Every classic dumpling was comforting as it it should be. I ate the folded noodles stuffed with shrimp and topped with that sweet sauce before I took a photo so that's missing. The egg custard tarts were also sacrificed before their photo ops. The service is fast. Most times, I'm waiting for the carts to come around at other dim sum spots, but here, they are fair about making it to each table. The ambiance? Get there early for dim sum, this place is super popular that there is usually a wait list after 12pm.

The fish filet was pretty tasty but very spicy. Some pieces had a slightly fishy taste. Otherwise the pieces that didn't have that flavor was good although it didn't have a distinct flavor other than that of the sauce. The sauce was a oily orange color but very tasty. It was a spice peppercorn flavor. It was like a soup in a soup bowl. Some might like this flavor and others might not. I think it is a polarizing flavor. I also got the mushroom, snow peas, with chicken. It all came with a bed of white rice. The white rice was good that day and the next when microwaved properly. Quite fast service and ordering was not too bad. They have a large parking lot although it can get busy and may still be hard to find parking or navigate the lot. read more

Great spot to grab dim sum in Mesa! Our friend ordered so many dishes for us to try. I loved the shu mai dumplings and fried bread with chives on it. The carts are coming around often to bring you food or order additional dishes. The table is great, so you can rotate frequently between your party. It is located inside the plaza. It's been a few years since I've returned but I would always order a large family meal to go, and it would be great for large gatherings. My recent experience was only a shadow of the past. Some food was still great and reminded me of the dishes had previously but most left something to be desired. Phone service is almost non-existent. Multiple times and reports from relatives will often call in, be put on hold, and set off to the side to hear the ambient sound of cooking or being rung up. I've since skipped any sort of calling to this place and either drove to them or ordered through the online system. Dim Sum is still probably okay and for AZ standards in the area, Ill take what I can get. Roast pig, delicious--but again service for ordering is its own adventure. read more

Visiting my brother and sister in law in Arizona this weekend and they took us to Mekong Palace after church on 3/31/24. They are located in a plaza where they had lots of Asian food and restaurants. Mekong took over the whole area and set up tables. They are busy! The dim sum was delicious and fresh. We ordered some items off the menu and they were also really good. The pan fried noodles was good, the duck was moist, tender and very flavorful. Everything from the dim sum cart was delicious. We were seated quickly once our party was all present. We came for dim sum and multiple carts came to feed us right away. We had a vegetarian with our group and initially there was only a braised bok choy dish and everything else had meat after two carts went by. It was fine, the food was just as expected.
