5/14/2026: I have been wanting to eat here again, so asked to go for Mother's day. The place had balloons decorated for the special day. Unfortunately, the kitchen seems to always be short staff, but it was worse that day. It took over one hour to get our food due to the number of to go orders and only two people in the kitchen. We did have a couple of staff members apologize. I would like to get food from here again, but sounds like it is best if we order to go. Basic period and end. If you don't live in the area there would be no need to travel to eat here. We arrived Sunday at noon and the restaurant was half full. We sat ourselves. We came specifically for the roast duck. Basically 1 waitress for the whole restaurant. When we tried to order it she said it wasn't ready yet. We ordered orange chicken and beef chow fun. Started with very small cups of egg drop and hot sour soup. The food took quite a while to hit the table and Chinese is usually very fast. The portions were basic and on the smaller side. The beef was shaved so thin it was barely there. Flavors were nothing memorable. I even had to go the counter and ask for a refill. Staffing is not a priority. The decor is on messy side and every looks less clean. Clearly local Asians but not many others there. It's a one and done for me. read more

Over the years I would say I frequent this place at least once every 2 months or so on average because there seems to have group lunches or dinners here. We always get the west lake soup, seafood tofu soup, whole steamed fish, seafood pan fried noodles, eggplant, green beans, black pepper chicken, lo mein, and more. They are great for take out as well as catering. They have their usual large round tables as well as smaller tables. I remember before Covid they used to provide free bowls of warm taro sago which is miss so much! This made them unique at one point. Hopefully one day they will bring it back. Now we just get fortune cookies. Either way the staff is always friendly and have been there for years. Love to support them. read more

They charge $3 for cup of tea. That's way too much. Usually water and tea are part of services for Chinese restaurants. Or they will told us about the place for a pot of tea. I was surprised to see a $6 tea charge for 2 person. The food is just okay. read more

I have been coming here for years and the food is always great! We went tonight and ordered hot and sour soup , ma po tofu, chicken and string beans, and a hot pot of fish, pork and tofu. All wonderful! That is our usual order but we have ordered other things that have been great too. Beef Chow fun, snow pea shoots, sweet and sour pork chop, Mongolian beef! Very solid Chinese restaurant! Went here on Christmas Day and was very satisfied with the experience. All of the food was well priced and had generous portions. The quality was overall pretty good as well. Our favorite was the chow fun and the duck! The service was pleasant but a bit slow initially. We probably waited 15-20 minutes until we ordered. Extremely disappointed in our take out tonight. Egg rolls nearly empty shells. Pot stickers, flat and tasteless. I've always ordered their Shrimp (prawns) with lobster sauce....tonight was blah. My girl ordered Chicken Chow Mein.....mostly noodle , almost no chicken or vegetables. Not sure what was going on tonight..... been going there for 20 + years. My family and I have eaten here at least one a month for the past 5-10 years, so we're loyal supporters of Tao! When we did sit down for dinner the service was quick and the staff are friendly. Now that we do take out more regularly the service is still quick and just as tasty! We always get the Shrimp Chow Mein, Sweet and Sour chicken (or General's chicken), and the War Wonton Soup. The War Wonton soup is my favorite, just delicious broth and dumplings all around. The restaurant is nice and standard, nice lighting, lots of parking around. read more

Tao Garden is pretty good! I like most of the entrees they offer. I probably had almost all of them over the years. I looked at some other people's suggestions and they all looked good! Their restaurant is located on the corner of the plaza, close to the street. This is good because then it is easy to get there and park. There is a Taco Bell close by though and their drive through gets busy. There is enough parking in the parking lot which is good. The service is usually fast but when it is rush hour, it can get slow. I would suggest the hot and sour soup. That is always a popular dish with my family and friends. I also like a couple of their noodle dishes. I think Hong Kong style noodles. I like their chicken dishes more than the beef dishes or the fish dishes. Great flavors and textures. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. This was one of the worst dining experiences we've had. My husband's dish was so over-salted it was completely inedible, and the "lemon chicken" was nothing more than a sweet-and-sour style dish with no lemon flavor at all. I never order sweet-and-sour, so this was extremely disappointing. The iced tea tasted like watered-down coffee, and the Coke we swapped for was all syrup and hardly any soda. The only thing remotely acceptable were the cream cheese wontons. I also need to mention that I'm deathly allergic to shellfish, so I always confirm safe handling with the server. We felt comfortable enough here since the menu had very limited shellfish and I didn't think oyster sauce or lobster would ever be in a lemon chicken dish. Unfortunately, the language barrier left me uncertain that I was understood -- which is a serious food safety concern. We barely touched our meals and politely told the server the food quality was poor. Instead of addressing it, she disappeared. At the counter we raised the issue, and the manager/owner came out, threw her hands up, and loudly asked, "What's your problem?" Then she insisted the food was "authentic Chinese," which it absolutely was not. Between inedible food, undrinkable drinks, overpriced menu items, and shockingly rude treatment from management, this was unacceptable from start to finish. In a city like Phoenix with so many great restaurants, places like this simply don't measure up. We won't be back. read more

Decent Cantonese style Chinese food in the area. We got the... -Duck: on the leaner side but still some fat on the skin. Nice flavor, would be good for those who don't want fatty meat -Beef & bittermelon: just ok. Do not get if you can't handle bitter flavors! I thought the melon overpowered the beef but maybe it is supposed to be like that -Braised Tofu: ok vegetarian option. Not much flavor. -Walnut shrimp: delicious and authentic! Some places deep fry it and that is NOT the way to go -Eggplant & pork: this was tasty but there was hardly any pork! Otherwise great dish -Yang Zhou fried rice: very average. They did give us a huge plate of rice on the side for free which we didn't expect! This place is incredible. I was recently in Hong Kong and eating the food here really transported me back. The fish clay pot might be one of the best I've eaten in my entire life! The fish was cooked beautifully, tofu was plentiful, and sauce was warm and hearty but not too heavy. The beef clay pot is also extremely high quality. It's very hard to find this level of Cantonese authenticity around the valley but I'm so glad it's available here. The portion sizes here are also very generous. They have some pretty good food at Tao Garden. They serve typical Chinese food like hot and sour soup as well as egg drop soup. Their rice and noodles are good. Their rice isn't dry. The noodles are crispy depending on what you get. They also have soft noodles too. I got some pan fried crispy noodles that had a sauce that made it not so crispy. The sauce softened the noodles. I think the noodles got a little fatter with the sauce. These noodles came with carrots. The other noodles were wide and flat. These noodles looked like they had soy sauce on them. They came with bean sprouts. I also had soft tofu and fish. The fish had a batter on it. The eggplant dish was quite sweet. The service is quick and I got my food fast. read more

I have been to this place before. The atmosphere have not changed at all. It is a bit out-dated, but the food quality was not bad. All three dishes I had was relatively okay. My biggest complain was the food was very blend and could use a bit more salt. Among the three dishes, the Peking pork chop was the best because it has the most taste to it and it was very crispy... on the edge of being too dry. The noodle was good, but could use more salt. Noodle was crispy and the sauce complemented very well. The salt and spicy squid, I can care less, it was crispy, but no taste. It's lacking salt and spicy to call it that. My family and I ate here this week. We all enjoyed our plates and mentioned we'd be back again. Hubby got a pork dish and so did I, mine had eggplant and his green beans.. Both flavorful and enjoyable. My kids chicken was something they really enjoyed, too. The place was very clean and the front table lady was very welcoming and nice. I subtracted one star for the fact that the service was extremely slow that evening. It wasn't packed, but it was busy enough with phone call orders and pick up orders and 5 tables that the *one* person working the front was overwhelmed. Poor lady!! I drive by almost every day but today I decided to give them a try. I knew I was in the right place as soon as I went in because there were other Asians there and I was the only round eyed white boy. I lived in Taiwan for four years so I became spoiled on good Taiwanese food that's hard to find here in AZ. I was not disappointed. This place really hit the spot. I've been looking everywhere for a Chinese restaurant that serves bittermelon. And as far as I can see, this is the only place in Arizona. They did not disappoint. The beef bittermelon dish was very good. Beef was tender, bittermelon not under or overcooked. Flavor was exceptional. There was only one server running the whole front of the house but she really did amazing considering what she was expected to do alone. They have not participated in the Health Department inspections since October 2023. Rude, argumentative , and racist towards non Chinese customers . Whenever she waited on tables with Chinese patrons , she exhibited a completely different demeanor. So Tao Garden is now open for pickup. As soon as I drove past and saw the neon "OPEN" sign, the first thing I did was text my daughter to give her the good news. We ordered dinner from there that night and after she took her first bite, she leaned back with her eyes rolling to the back of her head, she sighed and said "Oh, I missed this." You know what? I agree with her. We needed some Tao Garden. During the earlier part of the lockdown, we lowered ourselves to getting food at Panda Express, and it tasted like regret. Excellent Cantonese food with great prices. The food is legitimate authentic Cantonese food. The road duck had crisp to it! The lunch specials are excellent. They're huge and $7.75-$9! I have been craving Chinese food for a while now!! My husband loves Chinese food and I can only do it maybe 3 times a year, if he's lucky. Poor guy... I know.. The food was amazing we did a family style and it came with soup and appetizers and everything you could have wanted! It was plenty of food and plenty of leftovers as well! We found a good place and my husband wants to go back already and try the honey walnut shrimp. I'll have to take him sooner then later because it was a very good meal! I've been coming here for years. It's always a treat to stop by Tao Garden for dinner. The decor is that of all Chinese restaurants so don't expect to be wow'd. While my family normally gets the "set" dinners but if I stop in with friends, we normally just choose a few items from the menu. Some of my favorites are the walnut shrimp, the crab with ginger and onion, Peking pork chops, and the Peking duck [ although be warned, they only give you the skin with the buns and scallions --- no meat :( ]. The service here is pretty decent. Some nights are better than others but I attribute it to how busy it can get during the dinner rush. The waitresses are always nice and and attentive regardless of how busy it can get. While their actual social skills do favor the Chinese, they're always polite. read more

This place used to be extremely busy but the last couple times it's been kind of slow :( On a positive note, the servers are more attentive and they seem to be paying attention to small details that were once overlooked.
