Both times I have been here I have enjoyed the food and service. They offer a country fried steak topped with sausage gravy which seems to be a rarity in Rochester. Also.. and this is kind of a big deal if you eat out a lot.. They serve real homemade mashed potatoes and not instant like most other diners and regular restaurants. This is a small neighborhood place with good food. I have been eating there for years but no longer. It's not the food, it is the prices. I think a lot of places raised their prices because of the pandemic but this place went nuts. Their normal weekday bacon and eggs breakfast was $5.99, now it is $9.99, Their hot beef or hot turkey sandwiches with potato was $8.99 now it is $11.99. Most every other place I go has raised their prices also but only by a dollar or so, which is understandable. read more

Mel's is always a great place to eat. Good food, reasonable prices, and friendly staff. However, our visit for dinner this evening was below Mel's standard. Though the food was great, the service was not up to par. Our food sat in the window for nearly 15 minutes before our server brought to our table. She was not very attentive to her customers. Never stopped by to check on us and how our food was, didn't offer refills on our beverages. Her menu knowledge is lacking. One of today's specials was a Cobb Salad, and she had no clue what is on it. Never heard of processed turkey on a Cobb before, but it didn't work for me sound wise, so I added grilled chicken(traditional ingredient of a Cobb Salad). My husband and I were meeting a friend today at Mel's around 10 am am. There were hardly any people in the restaurant. We were not interested in eating breakfast so instead ordered a couple coffees. While we were waiting for our friend to arrive I overheard the manager telling the waitress that they do not allow people to have a meeting unless they order food so the girl came back to our table to tell us what the manager said. She did apologize for having to tell us this policy but unless we bought some food we would have to go. I could see it if the restaurant was busy and we were taking up a table that could have been used for a family getting food but at least we were ordering something and not just taking up a table. She brought us a menu and explained the policy again. I said well it would be good to have it the policy posted on the door or the menu so patrons were not embarrassed after being seated. We called the friend and it seemed she was going to be a no show so we got up and decided to leave as requested. We told them they just lost a couple of customers and left. I have never been treated like that ever before and given the recent news which spoke of two black men who were arrested at Starbucks for not ordering anything I was shocked at the way they treated us. We will definitely not be returning even though the food is good as others have posted here. read more

Went to Mels for lunch on a Saturday. We had no wait and was able to immediately seat ourselves. Waitress was right over to take drink orders. I ordered the prime rib shaved steak sandwich. It was about $10 with fries. I have been to Mel's several times in the past and haven't had a bad experience yet. The most impressive part was the waitress. She was the nicest lady you could ever meet. My major thing whenever I dine out is my refills. If I have to ask or wait on a refill it really peeves me out. She had my coffee and soda refilled almost immediately. I loved it! I didn't give this place 5 stars because the food is good but it is not great. It usually tastes rather bland but nothing worth complaining over as it is a diner and not a steak house. But I've certainly been to diners where the food had the "wow" factor. All in all I enjoyed it and kudos to one of the best waitresses. I tipped her over 25% and wrote a nice little note on the receipt. Again the meal was not a wow factor but I did like the coffee mug haha. read more

This is one of the best diners in Greece maybe even Rochester! There are many choices like garbage plates, burgers, stakes, and more! Any day is not packed except for Friday's but that's literally every restaurant so... But for every pros there's cons... sometimes if you get the right waiters they won't act nasty to you, and it gets boring after a while with every choice not being as exciting to eat as last time. read more

My wife and I frequent this diner, due to its proximity to our home. The food is excellent by diner standards! I typically get breakfast (two eggs scrambled soft with wheat toast, home fries and bacon and a short stack of French toast.) and it is always good. At night I typically get the chicken fried steak. It is flavorful and has a wonderful white gravy. Like I said, the food is great, but it's the way you are treated like family even on your first visit, which makes you want to come back. My son wanted to take me to Mel's Mt Read Blvd, Rochester NY ( for Father's Day (6/18/17) . Got there around 9:00am. I ordered a spinach cheese omelet, lightly white bread toast white and home fries. She brought out wheat toast that my son ordered and proceeded to ARGUE with me that I said wheat. Then within less than 2 minutes she slid some white COLD toast on the table. The omelet was hard, the spinach was uncooked leaf spinach that you had to use a knife to cut the omelet. The home fries were warm only and not cooked at all.(hard).. Entered the very busy establishment and was not warmly welcomed. Was seated at a bench that had no cushion and the other side of the bench had one half cushion the other half without cushion so we asked for a different seat so the woman who seated us snickered at the other waitress about it. Our silverware was filthy with smudges and raised marks. 1/3 coffees we ordered had a coffee mark ring that was higher from someone else's coffee. Lastly when my pancakes came out there was a hair on them. Our waitress was nice so we tipped her and didn't bother staying. Hoping it was just a bad busy day but still that's not excuse. read more

I would give this place 3.5 stars. It's a pretty solid diner with solid diner foods and good staff. The only other diner I've been to near this area has been Jay's Diner and Mel's blows Jay's out of the water. Their food and decor is much better as is the service. Straight forward mom & pop Americana diner food, I have not been disappointed in the quality of the food. Depending on when you go it could take a bit to get your food because they are so busy but they are always friendly and will always make sure your being looked after.. Went there on mothers day with my 83 year old year old mother. She ordered a side salad along with her meal. There was 1 tomato piece on it. we asked the waitress if we could have a couple more pieces of tomatoes because she loves tomatoes. She said that would cost 1.00 for each extra piece! Unbeliveable! We have been there a couple of times because I give a place a couple of times because sometimes the day is just off... BUT... I have gotten sick on their food twice and i dont dare go for a third! It only takes one person to ruin a great place. When I was seated, the server walked by our table 6 times, looked at me 3 and then when I asked the hostess who my server was, this woman gave me attitude. Said she was too busy, continued to give me attitude and even barged into my conversation. Then had the audacity to walk around the restaurant calling me names saying I was rude loud enough for the whole place to hear. Then even went as far as mocking me by telling her other tables to have a beautiful day and thank them for being so nice to her. Talk about unprofessional and someone who must hate their job to treat paying regular customers like trash. Then when I called the owner Tulia, she could have cared less.
