I've been here twice and have had the pozole, menudo and chili rellano. The pozole is made with chicken and I'm more of a pork pozole kinda guy. However, it is good pozole, not the best, but good. It is worth ordering. This is now my "go to" place for menudo. It is served, fresh, clean and hot with just the right balance of heat and menudo goodness. I add all the Mexican oregano, cilantro, onions and dried chilies with a twist of lime. It is sure to put a smile on your face. The chile rellano is one of the better ones I've had in San Antonio, and that says something as it is my favorite Mexican dish. Go with the cheese and you can't go wrong. Ambiance is typical Tex-Mex. The dinning area is bright and clean. Value is there as well. $4.50 for the pozole or menudo. Service is prompt and friendly. Solid four stars. read more

Love this place! Every time we visit from Dallas we stop by for breakfast tacos before heading home. The tacos are always prepared exactly how we order, service is usually veery attentive, and the price makes it a great value. Decent Tex-mex food for the Schertz/Cibolo area. Melanie's has good and generous breakfast plates. Beans are always creamy and rice is tender and fluffy. The carne asada tacos are great too. The meat is never gristly. You have to ask for onions and cilantro but they are generous. The staff is generally very nice, friendly and accommodating. Parking can be a hassle during busy times. Good enough tex-mex that we keep it in our dining out rotation. read more

Tried to go there twice this week 15 minutes before closing just to order 2 bean and cheese tacos for my daughter after swim. Both times they saw me pulling in, shut the blinds, turned off the "Open" sign, didn't answer in the drive-thru and locked the door. Mind you, there are still quite a few people eating in there that we can see and cars in the parking lot. I worked in the restaurant industry for a long time. If a customer came in 1 minute before closing, we still served them. No one even bothered to tell me, "Hey, we are closing soon and closed the kitchen" or whatever. I didn't look up their hours the first time, so I didn't even know why they had done this when they saw me walking up with my daughter. I thought maybe the people in there were just family and they were closed on Tuesdays. I tried them again because we normally like that place. Today, after they did it again, I looked up the hours after seeing the lady look at me and shut the blinds. I guess they don't need my business today or ever again! The food quality has declined over the past 2 years. The Saturday Chicken Pazole is a favorite of mine. I have ordered it over the past 6 years. The chicken used to be tender and clean and cut into chunks. The past 2 years, the chicken is tough and shredded, and fat is left in broth, and little to no hominy. The drive threw is a joke. It would more efficient if the worker spoke good English. The wait time has at times been excess of 20-30 minutes. I would not have waited that long but the driveway is set up so that you cannot pull out of line. Cheap and stingy. No condiments are provided or even asked if you would like them. I have to ask for napkins and then given attitude and 1 each of their $.01 cheap dispenser napkin. read more

It hurts me to give this review because I've loved going to Melanie's since high school and there's really no other place I'd rather go for breakfast tacos. My regular order there has recently been breakfast tacos with ONLY potato, avocado and pico de gallo. It's pretty confusing at first since I don't put eggs or meat on it but, nonetheless, they've always gotten it right--until today. Before I get into it, I'm not complaining about my order being wrong. That's bound to happen at some point. It's what happened after that. Essentially, my tacos came out with bacon on them. Not a big deal unless you're vegetarian or vegan and that's part of your belief system not to eat meat, so of course I needed to get a new order. Giving them the benefit of the doubt (since the receipt held the correct order) I went back in and they immediately said they would fix it. They got the tacos back out to me pretty quickly, but when I started munching on them a few minutes later, I discovered small bits of bacon still in them. So instead of remaking my tacos as would be the right thing to do, they just tried to take off the bacon and play it off. This really sucks because I love Melanie's but it this is how their cooks respond to a wrong order, I have absolutely no desire to go back to eat there. Phenomenal breakfast! I've been here a few times and this past weekend I took my s/o there for the first time. He got French toast, eggs, bacon and a breakfast taco. I had a bite of his French toast and it was seriously amazing. Didn't need syrup or anything. I ordered two breakfast tacos, and even though we were early chips with salsa. Also delicious. Stopped here with my family for lunch because I heard great things, but was not impressed. They were not swamped, but had about 6 servers. Still, we had to ask for refills and were rarely visited by our server. The servers mostly stood behind the counter talking. A couple other tables were served as we waited for our food for over 30 minutes. They don't know how to deal with wrong to-go orders. I'd say 3 out of 5 times, I order tacos and they manage to get it wrong. The last time I ordered carne guisada w/ cheese, bean and cheese and migas...they gave me bacon and egg. I would have went back since I live so close, but I got my food and drove an hour to see my mom and have breakfast...open the bag and total disappointment. We moved to Austin about a year and a half ago and there is not a DAY that goes by that I don't miss Melanie's. There is no better hangover cure than the bean, cheese and chorizo on their flour tortillas...Ugh, their flour tortillas are those of dreams...Like a soft, warm blankie to bundle up in. Love the flavor. Friendly servers. Problem: 90% of the time, we get our food to-go. No order has been correct. We've even had to drive all the way back to retrieve the rest of our order, not even an apology given. And we're talking SIMPLE orders such as add cheese to taco (which you'll get charged for if you get it or not). Melanie's Cafe, a small family owned and ran Mexican restaurant in Schertz, is one of the best places in the FM78/RAFB area to grab some good quality authentic (not Tex-Mex) Mexican fare, and at a good price as well. Service is consistently good and attentive. So anyone who knows me, if I find a Great Food/Good Value/Great Service place of ANY kind, I'm going to recommend it. The food was awesome. We went there yesterday for my supervisor luncheon. We were a little scared about the size of the establishment but it was it very neat and tidy. We place our order not knowing how our mouths water for more. The food was awesome and our waiter was very attentive to our needs. When we moved I started asking where to get the best Mexican food. This place was mentioned more than once and it consistently delivers. This is where I discovered I love cheese enchiladas. I never knew what I was missing. But we have also tried the fajitas and tilapia and other Mexican dishes and have never been disappointed. The service can be hit or miss. When it is on it is great. A year ago I gave Melanie's 5 stars on Google reviews. Today, I'm not as generous. My husband went in and ordered us lunch. I asked for the crunchy chicken taco plate(I dont eat red meat) when my husband came home I had a crunchy Picadillo taco plate. When I called Melanie's to let them know about the mixup I was told "well that's what the guy that TOOK the order said he wanted" so I said, "well, I dont eat red meat, so my husband would have NEVER ordered picadillo" her response, "oh.. ok bring them back and we'll fix it" Here is their chance to redeem themselves. But what do they do?? Give me 3 crispy tacos with just enough chicken right in the middle of the tacos, 2 slices of soggy tomatoes and beans that look like they came off someone else's uneaten plate!!! The food was excellent but service was terrible. When I walked in, all the waitresses were sitting down finishing their lunch and talking. They all looked at me but not one of them welcomed me or told me to have a seat. I got there early to get a table for 5, so I just walked to one of the long tables and asked if it was ok if I sat there; I got several blank stares and one "yeah." At that point I should have walked out but my co-workers were on their way and it was too late to find another place. The waitress took our orders brought our drinks and chips and didn't come back until she delivered our food. After that, she never returned to check on us or refill our drinks. Eventually, she returned with the check. I took the check to the register and yet again was ignored. After a couple awkward minutes standing there, one of them finally acknowledged me.
