The jerk chicken fried rice is always my go-to because it is consistently good and hard to go wrong with. The regular chicken, however, is not my favorite. A friend and I happened by Parkchester on an empty stomach when we found Melanie's as a highly recommended place through Google. The exterior facade almost had us fooled that it was closed, but the interior told a very different story with a very casual, but vibrant and fun vibes in a dim space lit by multicolored LEDs and Caribbean-Bollywood remixes blasting from a television set. The ambiance is reminiscent of a hole-in-the-wall family restaurant alluding to a rich historical and cultural culinary context. My friend tried the chow mein noodles with chicken whereas I opted for the roti with chana curry. As a South Asian, chana with paratha or puri is a staple dish with iterations throughout many ethnic groups, and I was both excited and pleased by Melanie's rendition. The chana curry with potatoes was rich, well-seasoned, and robust with a flavor profile that was all together familiar, yet enriched with an amazing, spicy difference when the side sauce (I believe Scotch bonnet peppers) is mixed into the dish. I would highly recommend adding this in moderation as it is very spicy, but brightens up the dishes with a slightly acidic note. The roti, on the other hand, was perfectly balanced between slightly chewy, soft, and flaky without being greasy. Although the staff is friendly and helpful, it was dreadfully slow service with my friend and I waiting for over 40 minutes to get our food. The service was the main detractor for us because it took a while to get both food and our bill. The portion sizes were overall reasonable for the curry and noodle dishes, but $4 for a single plain roti felt on the higher end. read more

I wanted to try something different and this spot is open late so we took the drive before they closed on a weekend. The inside is dimly lit, it was empty inside. There are televisions inside and music was playing on a low volume. The waiter who was also the bartender gave my husband and I menus. He seemed very guarded and nervous, but his guard came down after conversing with us. We ordered shrimp fried rice and an order of pholourie, we waited 15 minutes and conversed with the waiter. The food was fresh and hot, the shrimp fried rice was delicious. The pholourie was not my favorite I've definitely had much better. The tamarind sauce was okay, but could use some help. Hands-down, the best doubles I've had in my life. Melanie's never fails to fulfill my random cravings. Their doubles are so amazing, that I usually get 10 or 12 in one order. That's how good they are. The only reason I'm taking off one star is because their wait time is outrageously annoying. I fell in love with Melanie's during the pandemic. I walked by one day and seen so many to go orders coming out that there was no space at the bar! My spidey senses went up as I figured they must be serving amazing food to have so many orders. And I was spot on!! Melanie's Chinese-Guyanese fusion has held me down through a pandemic and through pregnancy cravings. Their food and service is top tier. Ambiance 9/10- The spot is small and has a few tables so people mostly pick up their food during the winter/fall but during the spring and summer they have an amazing outdoor dining setup and they aren't very pushy about table and time limits which I love. Inside, they play some really beautiful Guyanese music and it is dark and there are mood lights. With the drinks and hookah, you start to feel like you're in a mini club. While a lot of people from the neighborhood go here, they are super friendly. I've had some great convos here over drinks before. Service - Melanie and her family are truly kind souls. They are sweet, respectful and efficent. Even when we have dined outside, I've never felt forgotten about. They take their time to talk to their guest and get to know them which I really love. They are also open to people who may not be familiar with their culture's food and are more than happy to explain the dishes and their ingridients, as well as customize it to your spice level/taste buds. Food is ALWAYS a 10/10 for me. This is one spot you can also pick anything off the menu and be satisfied. Their portion sizes are huge and the food is made fresh fromMy go-to order is the shrimp with broccoli with a order of shrimp fried rice (a lot of shrimp, I know LOL) The shrimp with broccoli is flavorful, and the broccoli is cooked well but still has a crunch to it. The order of shrimp fried rice is also HUGE. My next favorite is their curry chicken and delicious roti.I've had the fried tilapia, channa and chicken chow mein and everything taste amazing. I'm no expert when it comes to roti but I can confirm this is one of the better ones I've had. Me and my boyfriend usually get one meal each and it last us 3 days. While the food is a bit pricey, I do feel like you truly get a bang for your buck. Drinks 20/10 - Melanie's strong Bahama Mamas got me through a stressful pandemic. They don't use any store bought mixes for their drinks, everything is made from scratch, using the traditional recipe with A LOT of alcohol. If you are a lightweight, I suggest approaching the bar with caution. My boyfriend can throw a drink back and he has even gotten drunk after 2 drinks from Melanie's. Melanies welcomed hubby and I with open arms and made us feel right at home for our first time trying West Indian food. We started with the potato balls and some shrimp... So much flavor. The potato balls came with a mango chutney or dip that was so delicious and paired perfectly. The chicken curry had so much flavor and truly was a comfort meal. Along with the mixed rice which came with a mix of shrimp, pork, and I believe steak. The portions were so generous and the drinks were strong but in a good way. I heard about this restaurant from a friend and decided to have date night there with my wife. I have never had West Indian cuisine and I was certainly excited. This place exceeded every single expectation I could have had. First off, it's a family owned and operated business. It was so charming meeting the wonderful husband and wife owners as well as their kids and other relatives. Inside the restaurant is beautiful, has plenty of seating, and they even had a DJ! They also offer outdoor seating and their take out orders were flying out of the kitchen. The prices are wonderful, especially for the massive portions. The flavors are unlike anything you will ever experience and their sauces are home made. The cocktails are also unique, delicious and pack a great punch. One of my favorite places to get take out from in the Bronx. I actually grew up in the area and never knew about this place until a few years ago. Food has not disappointed since. Before covid it was just indoor dining, looked like a typical bar scene but not your typical bar food. Now during covid they do have outdoor seating and what seems like a closed private booth outside as well. I've only sat inside before covid once, usually take it to go. The food may look a bit pricy but I feel it's a good size that warrants that price. Quality is there, every time I order from here I am pleased by the flavors. This most recent time I ordered the Jerk chicken fried rice and the broccoli in garlic sauce. The chicken was cooked very well, flavor and texture was good. Just the right about of spice to give you the zing but not overly strong, spicy or salty. Was not as greasy as some other times I've gotten it which is a plus. The broccoli in garlic sauce was also great, they did not go cheap on the garlic. Must have been half a bulb in there. Not that it was over powering, flavor was good but let's just say kissing may not be in the cards after this dish (probably safer nowadays anyway). I was also impressed by the packaging of the food. Was very neat and leak resistant as you'll see how they packaged the broccoli in garlic sauce pic I've attached. Would recommend as a take out place and come back. read more

For almost two years, I've been trying to go to this place. I finally ordered and got the vegetable fried rice and jerk chicken. Best jerk chicken in the west Bronx. I thought this place was very good. I ordered the jerk chicken, peas and rice and a roti. At a previous visit I had an eggplant and garlic sauce w/ roti. They gave a really nice amount of food with the jerk chicken, they weren't cheap with the chicken and the chicken was very tender and well-seasoned. The roti is nice and flaky/fluffy. Slightly pricey in my opinion, but this has a bit of a gourmet feel to it and they give a lot of food so it's justified to me. And the first time I went there, the staff explained to me the dishes I was thinking of getting, so to me, the times I've went, the staff seem pretty friendly and helpful. But once I got home and saw it was all separate AND my meat dish had one (1) potato. It wasn't very flavorful but maybe I'm just so accustomed to Jenny's Roti Shop having a more robust flavor. I came from out of town and stop by here thinking it was Trini roti. I ordered curry chicken and roti large for 22$, and what I got was a small portion and some kind of chicken that wasn't curry, no chick peas like most Trini places do and they didn't have any vegetables, reading all the reviews. I should of got the jerk I guess, left there still hungry and dissatisfied. Sorry to leave and review for family owned business but I hope you all can learn to make a better curry. I love this place. They make the best roti evvvvvvver!!! Hands up for the biggest and best roti! I've gone here multiple times just for the roti craving. I've tried the channa and the potatoes and it was also very yummy with the pepper sauce. Love it. It really is a great spot in the Bronx to try different cultural food. I am from Queens and was craving some West Indian Chinese Food. In Queens, we had a few options like Bamboo Garden and Kaieteur as well as a few other less popular places, which all serve very similar food. In the Bronx, there aren't many options. I found Melanie's while browsing the internet and saw some great reviews. We were having about 10 people over and I remember the Queens' restaurants portions were large. We used to buy 3 dishes and adequately fed 6 people with leftovers. I called the Friday night before and ordered 2 Fried Rice Dishes, 2 Lo Mein Dishes and 1 extra order of fried chicken, all for a 2 PM pickup the next day (Saturday). I belive you can order through GrubHub. Keep in mind that there seems to be both lunch and dinner (full size) portions, so be specific if you are ordering take out. As expected, the lunch portions are a bit cheaper, while the full sized dishes were $10-12. The rest of the menu seemed pretty fair with most dishes ranging from $10-15. I arrived shortly after 2PM and the food was ready waiting for me. The restaurant itself it pretty small with a few dining tables and a bar. The place, despite being 2 PM on a Saturday, had a very bar/nightlife vibe to it. I believe they have performances there from time to time. Parking in that area can also be tough with metered parking along Castle Hill Avenue and very little parking on the residential side streets. Luckily I had someone else in the car who was able to stay there in front of a hydrant while I ran in. The food itself was very good. The portions were large with 2.5 dishes plus the extra fried chicken feeding 10 of us. I would definitely make this my go-to when craving this type of food. It is probably the best in the Bronx, especially given the limited restaurants that serve West Indian Chinese Food. I cannot comment on any dine-in service. read more

Giving this 1 star because I have to. Food was tasteless and disgusting. Idk if all the great reviews are from Guyanese people who know what the food is supposed to taste like but I can guarantee you this isn't it. I got the channa that made it to my mouth but had a foul taste so I had to spit it out, polourie was tasteless and the tamarind sauce had a weird sweet taste that doesn't really go with anything on the menu-tip: it's supposed to be TANGY. Puri was not anything close to what it should taste like either. Everything had to go straight in the trash and my appetite was unfortunately ruined. Don't get me wrong, everything LOOKED appetizing but this is really THE example for it's not how it looks-it's how it tastes. I just can't believe this place is so popular. I wouldn't even trust them with my curried meats or chicken fried rice. Do yourself a favor and make the trip to liberty Ave in queens. Their worst roti shop is Melanie's best day. This was my first review on Yelp and I'm not pleased that it had to be a negative one. This was just a disgrace to my culture's food. read more

They had a great amount of outdoor seating thank goodness so we didn't have to sit close. It was my first time going and the place is pretty popular as the sun went down quite a lot of people did come to sit. Throughout the time we sat there there were so many to go orders waiting to be picked up or being delivered, which is understandable because the food was amazing. The servings are huge! My friend and I split a plate of lo mein and it was more than enough. The drinks were nice and strong too. And the prices are pretty low can't go wrong there. read more

Customer service is terrible. I called the restaurant because my food was wrong. Spoke to the owners son (very rude) who first told me he would be able to replace my meal. Then he called back stating he can not give me a new order and that he would have to charge me for the original orders price. but only give me the chicken. I was very upset because I called and spoke to a women (owners daughter) to place my order. when I shared this wasn't my fault and should be charged I was basically told oh well. and was hung up on by the son. once again I'm a very very loyal customer to this restaurant and was VERY disappointed!!!! Food is great and so is the menu selection. Just need a little assistance with editing selections due to allergies like the shrimp in your mixed rice. It cost me three times the price of the one food selection to assemble minus the one add-on that I am extremely allergic to. I am so glad that this place is still operating at a high quality during COVID-19 pandemic this place has not disappointed me yet. I have ordered multiple dishes from this place and the quality remains high the service is with a smile and the food is delicious. One of my favorites is the "lamb lo-mein" OMG so so good. Delicious lamb with tender juicy cuts of meat over scrumptious pasta and veggies. Yummy! This place is ranked high on my favorites list. They're one of the food gems in the community.
