This was my second time here and the first time I was impress with the food, not so much this time. The food was just average. I order the 5 wingettes and cup of gumbo, the wings were those pre frozen chicken wings that I hate because of the frozen process. Quick-thawing wings in warm water may speed up the thawing process, it actually pre-cooks the chicken. The meat then stretches before it's thrown in the deep fryer, resulting in crispy, almost wood-like meat. The gumbo had no flavor and the seafood platter took a long time but had no flavor. Melba's is in our neighborhood and we finally decided to stop in and have lunch (after seeing their signage and reading some Yelp reviews). Melba's seems to want to please all tastes and their limited space includes a video gambling room, a frozen dacquiri bar, and an ambitious food menu. I went with the highly touted shrimp po-boy and my son had an order of their popular chicken wings. The staff was indifferent to our presence and there were no pleasantries offered. That's not particularly important in this type of counter service setting, but it's always nice to receive friendly service. My po-boy was very good. It was cooked to order, filled with tasty, hot fried shrimp, and dressed with mayo, lettuce, and pickle. My son was very disappointed with his chicken wings. They were overcooked and came with soggy fries. There are a lot of really good po-boy shops nearby and I'm not sure if I will go back to Melba's. And I would certainly discourage other guests from ordering chicken wings or fries. read more

My initial response was disappointment once I got home and realized they had given me carrot cake instead of bread pudding. I attempted to call the restaurant multiple times, but no one answered. After working 12 hours, the last thing I wanted to do was drive all the way back just to wait in line to express my complaint. The po boy and fries were simply just ok. If you like waiting for over half an hour to eat over-priced, mediocre food in a chaotic, dirty and threatening place then Melba's is for you! At night expect the opportunity to meet new people who will ask you for money outside the restaurant (yes they serve alcohol!) which is connected directly to an all-night laundromat. Parking adds that touch of inner-city danger that you may enjoy as Melba's is located at a tiny corner intersection known for its many high speed collisions. They have po-boys and "po-girls" as the smaller sandwiches are called here (and nowhere else) served on stale bread with extra charges for any toppings such as two pickle slices for 50 cents, etc. Otherwise, your 1,000 piece chicken box is waiting for only $489 plus tax. There are more security cameras in this place than any bank you've ever seen (we counted at least 17) and they're there for a reason. The confusing "kiosk" ordering system, add an an extra service charge for that convenience, will overcharge you (we were double-charged for our meal) and I called my bank today to change my credit card for fear of any other trickery. This review is limited solely to the boiled crawfish at Melba's, which I've had only this once. My girlfriend bought 12 pounds of boiled crawfish. We had not tried Melba's crawfish before but decided to get some since their price was $0.55 cheaper per pound than any other place in town. The first crawfish tail I tried had an almost brown color (deserving of the name "mud bug") and, like the juice in the head, was extremely salty, grimy, brackish, disgusting. Assuming this was just one bad crawfish, I tried another. Same. I put my nose in the bag and could tell something was off. I opened a few more tails, not daring to eat them, but by their looks I could tell all 12 pounds were BAD. My girlfriend isn't from here and doesn't have a very refined palate for crawfish, so she was able to put down a few more crawfish than I could. She agreed the odor, look, and taste of this batch were different (worse) than crawfish she had tried elsewhere. She started throwing up not long after her meal (which, admittedly, could be from the butter she had to soak the tails in to make them half-palatable). I'm not sure if someone forgot to purge these crawfish before boiling them, or if they were leftovers from a previous boil and cooled prematurely before being re-heated, or who knows? Probably one of the best restaurants in New Orleans. Everything is fresh and it tastes like it is homemade.
