We loved the prior incarnation of Melissa's and were very excited that they reopened. The venue is beautiful and has a new outdoor space that looked appealing if it hadn't been so hot! Sadly, the experience didn't meet expectations set by our previous ones. Our server was wonderful and attentive. The space is way too tight. The servers had trouble making their way through the aisles and we got bumped several times (despite their best efforts). The drinks were ambitious but didn't quite work. Either too dessert-y or just too many ingredients that were overwhelming for an apperativ. Our small plates came out cold and presentation was lacking. Maine were solid and one of the two desserts offered was good. I hope the team just needs time to get in their groove and we will be back for another try. read more

Last night, my wife and I dined at the newly renovated Melissa's. Being year round residents, we were thrilled with an additional upscale dining experience in the area and truly looking forward to our meal. Upon entering, we saw the renovation that had taken place, including a new inviting bar area. We were walked through the restaurant, past a few open two tops and seated at the very back of the restaurant next to the bathroom. When my wife asked to be seated at one of the open two tops, the hostess told us in a confrontational tone that they were completely booked and she couldn't change anything. We asked about the bar area. She checked and told us that there were two available seats at the bar. By that time, we had decided to stay where we were. When we told the hostess, she let out a loud sigh and turned her back on us and started to walk away. We weren't going to let this borish behavior go without commenting, so we said " we're going to stay here if that's ok with you." Our server Cassie was very pleasant. Food: my dumplings were warm, not hot. My wife's halibut was dry. My duck was very good. We weren't offered sparkling water as an option, nor were we offered the option for dessert. When we were offered new utensils, the busboy threw them in a pile in the middle of the table. Melissa's has the potential to be a very good restaurant, but there are quite a few things that need to be improved upon before it hits that status. Since the very first impression of the restaurant is one's interaction with the hostess. She either needs to be trained up or the restaurant needs to find a replacement. read more

Recently reopened and worth the wait. The place was clean and noticeably quieter. I had the Goat Cheese Fritters starter and the 14 oz. Rib-Eye. Both were fantastic - prepared to perfection. We had dinner on Sunday at the new Melissa diner and lounge. It is located on Atlantic Avenue and is in a very distinctive Green building. Very good parking other than I don't like gravel parking lots. The restaurant is laid out beautifully. It looks very upscale and appointed beautifully with tables and chairs. From our perspective we thought tables were a little bit tight, but the chairs were very comfortable especially for anyone with a bad back. Sitting in the middle of the room on those chairs works beautifully. Very attentive, wait staff. Our person was Amber and she was wonderful. Although we had eaten in Melissa years before, this is a totally updated Melissa restaurant and has only been open approximately seven days, so there are still kinks that need to be worked out; for instance, the lamb meatballs on a small plate were not available. Worse, there was no coffee at all! My husband is an espresso drinker, but no coffee is a mortal sin! Most diners cap off an evening with coffee. However, we give them benefit of the doubt since they are so new. The Wine selection was quite good. And my husband is a beer drink but not alcoholic. And it was limited to only Heineken. Today, more people are not drinking alcohol. So a wider non Alcohol selection might be something to consider. The menu was wide enough for us to choose some delicious dishes. They have several small diverse plates, which I really appreciate. There is a mix of American cuisine and Asian cuisine on the menu. The shunai which I ordered was wonderful. My husband ordered the teriyaki shrimp and it was tasty and perfectly prepared and presented. We also ordered the fried rice as a share for the both of us and it was superb; we took home at least half of it. I would tell people not to over order on the rolls, although they're very good. Two rolls for a party of two is more than enough! My husband ordered the halibut, which was suburb very well prepared and presented beautifully on the plate. I ordered the Macc and cheese and took half of it home. But I think it is a dish that you have to eat while it's hot in the restaurant. It does not travel as well, but it was exceptionally good. As far as desserts. We are both lactose intolerant and what was available was pretty standard desserts of cheesecake and a chocolate moose both of which we could eat. Surprised that there was no sorbet or fruit dessert dish, but again, they're only seven days old. They should have desserts which match the tone of the restaurant. But I'm assuming the menu will be tweeked overtime. Overall, it was a great experience, and in a few weeks we will go back, and hopefully some items that we wanted to order will be available; I'm specifically interested in the salmon dish, which looked quite appealing. Melissa's Dunner and Lounge Restaurant is definitely worth visiting. read more

We started our meal with a couple of appetizers, the burrata caprese salad and the special tuna on wonton crackers. Both were great. For our mains, the burger was delicious and the lobster fried rice didn't disappoint. But the star of the show was the swordfish special which was incredible! We love dining at Melissa's. We just moved to Ocean View and it is one of our favorite restaurants. We love the cozy ambiance and excellent service and the food is stellar. They are going to raze the building and build a new restaurant space and plan to have it open for Memorial Day weekend. We often get one of the specials on the blackboard-I recently had a grilled flank steak with a delicious chimichurri sauce and my husband had the brick chicken which was fantastic. Thank goodness it's a mainstay on their menu. Melissa is always present and friendly. read more

Burger was great (requested without the sauce); soup was creamy with a understated tomato taste upped with a swirl of olive oil and tasty croutons; the grilled cheese was Gouda and cheddar awesome with sliced tomatoes wedged inside perfectly toasted bread -- every bite gooey good. We had a delicious meal here! We started with the homemade snowflake rolls, which were warm and fluffy with delicious honey butter and herb infused olive oil for dipping. Yesterday was my 3rd time dining at Melissa's, and it's exceeded my expectations once again! I was there with my family (party of 8) and the service and attention to detail was so on point. So this is a place you want to love but it just needs to do more to get you past the "it's just okay" stage. Let's start with the noise level. Having been there 2x in the past few weeks we had the same irritating experience of having to strain to hear the conversation at our own table. It's a small quaint room but dinner conversation is almost impossible without shouting. Please do something about this. As to the food, the main course was good in both instances but ...no starch with the fish and just a few string beans for $38. It just fell short for the price. And be careful when you order a drink. Up charges are applied how the drink is prepared and adds to the cost for surprises at check time. This place will have to make changes before I make another visit. As an Ocean View resident I have a number of better places to spend my money. read more

Went for dinner at Melissa's last night for the first time and from the New England clam and corn chowder which was filled with more clams than I've ever had in a bowl of soup to the fantastic steak dinner over grilled zucchini and garlic mashed potato puree the entire meal was fantastic. One of the finest dinners I've had in a long time! The service was impeccable. The dumplings (flavors change nightly) were as good as any of the finest Asian restaurants. My Halibut was cooked to perfection and the sweet potato puree was simply delicious. The flank steak my dining partner enjoyed was also cooked to perfection. And then there was dessert! My wife and I had the pleasure of dining at Melissa's on Friday night, July 14th. The inside was full, so we took a table outside. The breeze felt good and the traffic wasn't loud at all. My wife got the coconut passionfruit margarita which she raved about. I got a Good Earth IPA, which was great. We split the snowflake buns which were delicious. They come with honey butter (for spreading) and olive oil (for dipping). My wife got the salmon stuffed with crabmeat and I got the NY strip sirloin. Both meals were excellent and both were served over a potato cream sauce. We were too full for any desserts. Melissa was our waitress and she couldn't have been better. Friendly. Knowledgeable.
