Mellow Mushroom is by far one of my favorite pizza places. The pizza is always delicious, and the staff is always kind. The inside of the restaurant is full of interesting color and design, and they have recently received a new menu look, which is also so wonderfully decorated in what I consider a signature look for them. They deserve the 5 stars even with some minor criticisms, one being that it does get a touch pricey and the parking is not always the easiest. In all the times I have been to Mellow Mushroom, I don't think I have ever heard about any special deals or offers (maybe I'm not going on the right days), which I think could be a great way to increase revenue and traction. Parking is not as easy a fix as they are located in Five Points, so I just recommend going around 4:00/5:00pm on a weekday for your best shot at decent parking! read more

I was feeling a late dinner, my boyfriend and I thought it was a good idea to get Mellow Mushroom in Five Points for carry out. We ordered a large pizza and wanted it to be half cheese and half pepperoni. It took about 20 minutes for it to be ready and picked up for takeout. The workers were very friendly and I noticed the restaurant was fairly packed. As usual, finding parking in Five Points was difficult due to how many different options of places there are to eat in that area. I noticed there were not any COVID-19 protocols or precautions being practiced, but the tables within the restaurant had a decent amount of distance. When I got home and ate the pizza I noticed it was very warm and smelled delicious, but I got full within the first slice of pizza because the crust was extremely thick. Absolutely loved this place! Staff took precautions to make it feel safe during Covid-19 and super nice. They currently have patio seating only and they are definitely practice social distancing. Wonderful experience! The host immediately greeted us and sat us on the patio as we requested. The host, Diego, also was our server for the evening. Top-notch service!! I checked in at the restaurant on Yelp and had a pop-up offer of a free pretzel bites app! It was very good! I would order again paying full price for it! Comes with marinara and beer cheese dipping sauces. It's a good sized potion for sharing. We also ordered a Greek salad. Every item in the salad was fresh and the dressing was delicious (herb vinaigrette). We chose the large size and it was a huge bowl! My husband and I shared it, but still had some left over since we also ordered pizza. We got the feta on the side since my husband did not want it on his portion. Both of our pizzas were great! The crust was tasty and the amount of toppings was perfect! We both did a build your own option. My husband selected vegan cheese for his and really enjoyed it! Almost every single time I go to this establishment, the food is okay but the service is subpar. My Caesar salad today was good, but I had to ask several different times for our drink orders. They need to be properly staffed to handle more than two drink orders at a time, as that's how many were coming out at a time (including water). I'm tired of trying to eat here with my friends and will suggest we go elsewhere in the future, if only to save some time. read more

Went to Mellow Mushroom for date night last night and the overall like the vibes of the restaurant. Service was very slow; however when we placed our order the food did come out pretty quickly. Thanks to YELP we had a coupon for a free pretzel bite The waitress only came back and checked on us one time and we sat with empty cups for longer than usual. This is a franchise chain so I'll keep this review brief. This is my very first time eating at a Mellow Mushroom anywhere. Go figure? This location is in the Five Point neighborhood, and it fits in nicely with the other "cool" restaurants and bars in the area. We sat outside, and were annoyed by several flies that we had to constantly shoo away. My wife and I shared a medium Funky Q. Chicken pizza, and our daughters ordered their own small pizzas. One had the Kosmic Karma, and the other ordered the Buffalo Chicken pizza. We all agreed that the crust was wonderful. It was the perfect thickness, and it was crunchy on the outside and just chewy enough. I rate the crust five stars! I did not care for the Funky Q. Chicken. It wasn't bad; I just thought the barbeque sauce was too sweet and the ingredients were not very memorable. The girls enjoyed their pizzas, and everyone took home leftovers to enjoy the next day. MM offers approximately 40 different draft and bottled beers. I had a Yuengling draft, and it was $3 during happy hour. I give this Mellow Mushroom location a three star rating, but I think it has potential to be better. The crust is very good and with the right toppings, these pies could be excellent. I feel like my Atlanta (and Georgia Tech- my alma mater) card will be revoked once I publicly admit that this was my first EVER visit to Mellow Mushroom. Fun fact: MM was founded in Atlanta by two Georgia Tech grads. But I made it here, so that's what counts, right? But I digress... I was hesitant when BF suggested MM. It was a Friday around 8PM. I was tired, and didn't feel like going anywhere that required waiting/possibility of running into students asking about their exams. Thankfully we encountered neither. But we went. And I'm glad we did. Walked in. Immediately seated and were asked about our drink orders. Whoa. The second "whoa" moment came when I looked at their menu. As mentioned in previous reviews, extensive menus overwhelm me and I shut down. But I figured out which of the variety of toppings I wanted in my calzone. We ordered and patiently waited for our food. Pretty soon these ginormous calzones emerged from the kitchen pipping hot. Nom nom. Calzone was perfectly cooked and with good amount of toppings and cheese. Parmesan was sprinkled on top. I had to ask for a to-go box because I couldn't finish my order. So the wife kept talking about wanting pizza, wanting pizza, wanting pizza. So at first we drive out to Trussville to Cici's Pizza. Why did we do that? Everyone is still acting like they are so fascinated with the fact that we now have aCici's Pizza, but not remembering that we use to have one a while ago in the Palisades... smh... The line was out the door... we were hungry like NOW so that wasn't going to work. So we left Trussville and I opened my trusty Yelp app, on the search for pizza! Our server was training a new server, so yea... When she came back with our drinks, we ordered some Wings and I ordered a beer (don't ask me why, but I always feel beer goes with pizza lol, and I'm not even a beer person). I ordered us the Bayou Bleu pizza- has shrimp and sausage I believe. It was really good! Had spices and Bleu cheese on it! Very tasty! Very greasy, but very tasty! We usually order the large sausage and pepperoni. The crust is the best part of the pizza. It's rubbed with a buttery, garlic flavor that gives it just the right pizazz. Talked the GF into going here the other day. I had suggested it a few time before, and she was kinda hesitant about it, but eventually got her to go. It was busy, but not packed, when we walked in. We were seated promptly and got our drinks fast. Mellow Mushroom has a big menu - pizzas, calzones, hoagies. If you don't like one of their signature items on the menu, you can customize them or get a build/create-your-own item. We both chose to go with calzones instead of the pizza so that we could customize it the way we wanted to, and not have to worry about comprising. I got a 'create-your-own' calzone with buffalo chicken, feta cheese, bacon, and mushrooms. It came out after about 15 minutes and I dug in. Neither of us finished our meals, as the calzones were huge, and both got to-go boxes. It was great food, as always, and will be back again! read more

For this review, I am looking at Mellow Mushroom's Vegan Miss Mushroom pizza! To be honest, I have never been a fan of vegan food before, but this pizza totally changed my mind! It was out-of-this-world amazing! It was covered with fresh spinach and mushrooms and was equivalent to eating pepperoni pizza, my usual order, in its savoriness. Of course, they have even more vegan and vegetarian options available, but I can only eat so much in one sitting. Now, regarding the restaurant itself. The location is downtown Birmingham, close to 5-Points. Parking wasn't the best, but you could find some with a little bit of searching! Regarding the interior, this Mellow Mushroom was super clean and the atmosphere was amazing and, as one would expect, had that trippy Mellow Mushroom vibe to it. Regarding service, the staff were amazing. I was sat quickly, got my order in quickly, and also received my food quickly as well! Everything here was a top notch experience and I am very glad I went to this location and also was able to venture into uncharted territory (the vegan menu)! read more

I visited Mellow Mushroom today with a dear friend of mine I hadn't seen in a while. We were both starving and excited to grub. Nestled in a cozy corner of Birmingham lies this restaurant-- it had a welcoming vibe, and despite the freezing cold outside, I was pleasantly surprised by the quick seating. The Meat-Lovers pizza caught my eye, so I instantly placed by order. It took quite a while to get my pizza, and as I was starving, that made me quite impatient... even more surprising since it wasn't a full house. However, the ambience was very nice and warm, and the dim lighting and rustic/hippie decor added a touch of charm. When the pizza arrive, I noticed the very generous amount of cheese oozing off. I do like my cheeses, but it was a bit overwhelming, which resulted in a slightly greasy texture that clung to the roof of my mouth. Some of the meat pieces on my pizza were overcooked, which added a smoky undertone that was nice at first, but quickly overpowered. Luckily, I ordered a large glass of water, so it was manageable. Wished I could comment on food..but service was so slow my wife and I got tired of waiting. I will tell you as we walked in at 1:15 on a Sat there were maybe three tables eating...no host to wait on us so we sat ourselves in the bar area..amazingly you could just read the bartenders face and expressions as he talked to no less than three different people in the kitchen area and surroundings and even looked in our direction...well enough time had elapsed and he finally decided to wait on us we just asked for waters...drank half and left...decided to drive down to Pies and Pints where I am currently sitting writing this long winded description..oh, and receiving great attention!! I think I may have found one of my go to places. I came here for the first time today for lunch. I'm awfully surprised it wasn't very busy considering how good the food was. The wait staff was excellent. I ordered a buffalo chicken calzone off their specialty menu and told them no carmelized onions. Amazing! One of the best calzones I've had in a long time. I'm also officially a fan of applewood smoked bacon. They cut the bacon into huge pieces so there's no way you could have missed it. Nice touch. Yesterday was Easter, I am no different from anyone else, and obviously ate more than I intended to. I made myself stop after half of my calzone and asked for a to-go box. The other half of the calzone lasted a good two or three hours in that box before I found myself wanting to finish it off. I regret nothing! read more

Food was okay. Our waitress wasn't the friendliest and definitely not very attentive. We ordered a large pizza, kids pizza, gluten free pizza, salad and two calzones. Everything came up as it was ready which I was happy about so that people's food didn't get cold but the large pizza came out when a couple people were done eating and a couple almost done. Mellow Mushroom, in 5 points south, is a fun place to go if you are thinking about a calzone or pizza night with friends. I must say, that parking can be tricky, but there is lot with a limited amount of spaces behind the building. The many times that I have gone, we have never had to wait for a table and the service was good. My sons, husband and college sons often meet here and share the giant calzones. I have to expose my frustration of Mellow Mushroom right now. At 1:30 pm today. I decide to get pizza at Mellow Mushroom so I walk there by myself. First there is a young guy, who is the waiter, took me to a table for two.And then he left without asking if I want something to drink so I went to rest room and back to my seat less than 5 minutes later. And I saw he is serving for other tables.(That's fine!) It took me 15 minutes to wait for a another waitress who eventually asked me what I like to drink, I said water but it took me another 20 minutes waiting for the water. And I asked that waitress why my water hadn't come she said no problems and they are busy today. I was very annoyed and I almost decided to leave.Then another guy came with my water it was another ten minutes later. After I got the water I just gave that guy some tips and leave as soon as possible. I wait for almost one hour but just get a water! And the restaurant is not full at all and there are four to five people serving but they left me behind since I was there alone. They would rather served for tables with families and ignored my existence! I was very sad and mad. Well the atmosphere is great and it is a good place to bring the kids. Service was ok but it could be improved with a warm, friendly smile here and there. The pizza was good but the children's meatball dinner was tiny to say the last. She enjoyed every bite but was left hungry for more. These should be listed as toddlers meals. The kids calzone was huge though and there were two of them. I couldn't believe the portion difference in the two. If you go and you have a child that is a healthy eater, stick to the calzone. Always good pizza all the time. It's great to come here after you had your fair share of developing drunk munchies over at World of Beer. A small pizza is good enough for me. Get the chicken wing sampler. It's small enough that you still have room for pizza but enough that you get a good taste. The house special is always good. You can't go wrong with any pizza here but that's because as long as my pizza has a side of marinara and cheese, I like them all.
