I have been to this location several times in the past, but I had no idea the Mellow Mushroom offered vegetarian and vegan pizza options. This time I ordered the Vegan Veg Out to go and it was much better than I anticipated. My pizza was cooked to perfection and although I'm not vegan, I could hardly tell any differences between the vegan pizza crust and the regular crust I have had in the past. I was only in the restaurant briefly to pick up my order, but the staff was extremely friendly and nice. All staff members I encountered wore a mask over both their nose and mouth. There were not many customers in the restaurant when I was there, but the tables were situated at a safe distance from the others and COVID-19 protocols appeared to be closely followed. read more

Mellow Mushroom always has amazing food and the service there is always great. I haven't been to one a while and decided now is as good time as any to have some again. I would normally get a pizza when I come but I decided to switch it up and try one of their calzones for the first time. I got the veggie calzone and it was really good. I asked for mine without mushrooms and it came out great. The overall atmosphere of this restaurant is really nice and enjoyable, while also paying mind to COVID-19 restrictions. Masks were worn by all of the staff as well as being worn when first entering the establishment. Mellow Mushroom has always been a wonderful place the last time that I went to Mellow Mushroom I believe I was 13 and it was great then and I think it has become even better. On my trip this time I decided to do take out, I love the vibe in this restaurant, they seem to be implementing COVID-19 guidelines by ensuring that everyone is six feet apart the staff can be seen wearing a mask and everything seems to be very clean. I got a Calzone this time and it was great, I think that for the price you get a good serving of food! In terms of sustainability I think that this establishment is doing great, since I took my food to go they gave me the Calzone in a brown cardboard box which I think it good for the environment and easier to be recycled. My family likes Mellow Mushroom. Fun atmosphere and good pizza. I took my daughter to the south side location on a Monday around 7pm. They were not busy. We had to wait a bit to be seated. We had to wait to place the order of 2 small pizzas. It took a long time and they finally served my daughters pizza. It was another 10m before my pizza was served. We are big fans of Pies & Pints, but when we are craving a buffalo chicken pizza this is our go-to spot. We always begin with the Caesar salad which has shaved parmesan on it and is very tasty. The buffalo chicken pizza with swirled buffalo sauce and ranch cannot be beat. I always ask for extra ranch to dip the crust in. The service can be a little hit or miss and it is expensive for pizza, but we always seem to return for this specific item. read more

We stopped in to get Muffaletta Cheese Bread to go for a party - I've taken this appetizer to this group before, and it was a HUGE hit. I'm not overmuch fond of olives - but others are - so I let the experts make my dish. We decided, on a lark, to sit down and eat something before we went back, so we explained to our server, Mr. Handsome McDreamy, what we were doing and he was totally on board. The mushrooms were caramelized with love and care, and peace was sprinkled on heavily with the caramelized onions. We seriously wondered if the sandwich was somehow spiked - it was that good. Fresh tomatoes, melty and hot cheese and smoked turkey rounded out the AMAZING experience. I had the Portobello sandwich and, like the Mushroom Club, it was a transcendent experience. I am not really sure what the fuss is about. I've had MM pizza years and years back and never thought it was anything special. Today I was reminded why. My friend and I ordered the Daley special pizza..chicken, bacon, pineapple, pepperoni, cheese, red sauce. The best thing about the pizza was the crust. The bacon was mostly fat and soggy. Gross to the max. The chicken tasted like previously frozen thawed in the microwave chicken. Everything else on it was ok, but the crust was great. I had ordered a salad, but when the pizza came and still no salad I asked to cancel. She seemed surprised. I dunno, maybe salads are eaten for dessert here. I also ordered a cookie to take home to my boyfriend...looked ok. But it was topped with cream. And as soon as I walked outside it looked like a giant semen cookie because its freaking 97 degrees. Although one may feel that one is paying extra for the hippy atmosphere, I think the MM offers something needed in the Birmingham community. It has real vegetarian options, tofu, fake cheese, hummus, etc. I thought the pizzas were quite good and the outside seating was pleasant. Went here for lunch with a group of people because we were all in the mood for pizza and Mellow tends to make a good pie. The service was slow (even though the place was empty), but the food was up to par with other Mellow Mushrooms I've been to. The waitress even split the checks correctly in spite of one of my group screwing it up when he described it to her. My only minor complaint is that they didn't have a lunch menu per se. I have not really ever eaten here. The staff who seated us threw the menus on the table and walked off. I suppose I was at the correct table. The server was friendly but not efficient. The atmosphere is ok and love the patio(although it is hard to get up if someone is sitting to the side of you). The beers were great priced. I was looking for a restaurant that was (a) reasonably close to the airport, for a post-pickup dinner, and (b) capable of some variety of gluten-free food. Not being from Birmingham, this proved to be quite the struggle, but it was Mellow Mushroom's online extensive explanation of their gluten-free procedures that won me over (and it was only about 15 minutes from the airport, which seemed like the best I could do). We parked on the street across from the restaurant and headed in the nearest door, which apparently was the one at the bar end of the restaurant. We approached an employee and asked about seating, and she directed us to the host stand at the other end of the room. No one was there, however, so we waited about five minutes before a server came by and said he would be right with us (he went and took an order from a nearby table first). We were then seated about five feet behind the host stand -- and it was not busy, so there were plenty of empty tables. Couldn't we have just seated ourselves? Our server was very friendly though, and inquired about the gluten-free order (if it's just a preference, they understandably don't really want to pull someone off the line to go decontaminate). She also warned us that pizzas take 20-25 minutes, so my sister opted for a side salad in the meantime. The pizzas were brought out by different people (presumably the designated gluten-free guy), and were hot and delicious. Maybe a lot more parmesan than I'd prefer, but that's really splitting hairs. I also could have done without the start of some kind of trivia game in the bar, though they seemed to kick it off, ask a question, and then take a five minutes break -- so everyone can Google it? I loved living down the street from mellow mushroom in back in Austin, so after moving I was super excited to find out there was one right down the road from where I work. The pizza is always good- hot, fresh, the crust is just how I like it and you can literally have them make it just the way you want. Aside from pizza, the Greek salad is delicious, and the enlightened spinach salad is my favorite. I like the vibe of the place, it's laid back, the decor is cool, & our waitress was very friendly and attentive. We went on a quiet Sunday evening and were seated readily, but had to wait quite a while to receive acknowledgement from a server, and that turned out to be a trend of the visit. My wife and I split an appetizer of garlic bread and shared a cheese calzone. The wait for the food felt even longer than normal at a Mellow Mushroom, despite the half-full restaurant. In college and pharmacy school my friends and I would occasionally go down to the Five Points area for a night out on the town, and often times we would start out at the Mellow Mushroom. I remember it being a really happening place...always a wait to get a table, but there's a bar so you can always have a drink while you wait. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and the outdoor was fun because you can people watch while you're eating. Good pizza from what I can recall, good calzones as well. I had a salad a few times (WHY at a pizza place?? I use much better judgment these days!), and I recall it being decent and pretty big. I'd love to go back there one of these days, just to see if it's as good as I remember. Parking was a general issue in that area, especially at night and on the weekends, but once you found a spot you were good to go for the rest of the night. Can I give 6 stars? - c'mon Yelp, get with it! :) Mellow Mushroom is just plain awesome, and "mellow" is just the right word for it. My first experience with the place was back in Auburn during my college years, and friends and I loved going there b/c of the fact that the atmosphere and the staff were always "über-chill". No stress, no pretention - just great pizza, hoagies, etc. in a cool, comfortable package. Well, the 5 Points/Southside Birmingham location is no exception to the rule - the food's still "hit-the-spot" fantastic, and the scene is still very much chillastic (think String Cheese Incident or Bob Marley playing on the stereo in the kitchen, while cooks sing along with no reservation and patrons pay it no special attention, like it's almost mandatory). Some friends and I descended upon the place several days ago and spent the better part of a couple of hours there hangin' out, chattin' it up with each other and a couple of the servers (Sarah Nesbitt, personable award FTW), and getting our fill of a *meatstravagantic* pie and some phenom garlic cheese bread. We had a great time, and consistently do so whenever we decide to hit the double-M - the place is very much a fixture in our frequent sitcom of a life. :D So, final word - Mellow Mushroom, 5 Points/Southside - visit there, eat there, chill there, return there. You know.....I expected better. This was my first time at this location and though the space is wonderfully rad, I was underwhelmed by the pizza. I'll give it another try...this time; however, it was the choice in pizza. Plus its a chain pizza joint and those are not on my list of favorites. You can't go wrong with mellows. Is there even a better pizza crust? I don't think so. Where else can you get pizza dough soft pretzels? Nowhere. Great beer list and great pizza. The staff is pretty cool, and checks up on you when your drink is low. This is a great place to bring a group of friends. We had 8 at our table and they got all of our ordered correct and even kept the beers straight. Make sure you ask if there are any beer specials as sometimes the locals will be a little cheaper. Their appetizers are worth getting as well. I've had their bruschetta, which was honestly one of my favorites), spinach artichoke dip, hummus, pretzels, garlic bread, the works! Fun, friendly place for a pie- though I am a devotee of the calzones, and the garlic & parmesan pretzels. (Big, soft warm pretzels. Sometimes just *Slightly* underbaked, but I like them tat way.) One of my favourite afternoon stops is to visit the bar for a pint & the pretzels. Those stops are enhanced by the staff. They've always been very friendly & attentive. (Not to mention some of them are kinda cute, which doesn't damage the experience at all!) I'm happy to have this Atlanta-based chain in my neighborhood, and happier that this particular location is my favourite of any of them I've visited outside ATL. I recently went to Mellow Mushroom with my girlfriend, and we shared a medium Veg Out pizza, which had mozzarella, spinach, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, black olives, and tomatoes. I really enjoyed the pizza and the atmosphere in the restaurant. The veggies on the pizza combined with the slightly tangy sauce and savory crust made for a great pie. The songs that were being played made the whole vibe of the restaurant feel friendly and casual like familiar, but distant memories. The customers were socially distanced, and employees wore masks. Our waitress was extremely kind, and I was able to redeem a coupon that I received simply for checking in on Yelp for pretzel bites, which were also great. The pretzel bites came with marinara sauce and a beer cheese sauce, as well. The straws in our drinks were paper, and the to-go boxes were cardboard with only parchment paper inside. The silverware was metal and not plastic. It felt refreshing to eat at a restaurant without generating any plastic waste, a good step towards sustainability.
