This Mellow Mushroom is really great. No matter what city you go to one, they will have great food and booze. This specific one is always packed. Every Friday night while I was living in Johnson City, I would stop in here. Mellow Mushroom is a franchise, but after speaking with the manager I now know that the franchisees get a bit of freedom. They have certain themes and layout for decor they can choose from with staple pizza's and random other options. That is a great concept. This specific one is very industrial looking kind of like an open air garage not like the odd creepy forest in Lexington, KY. LOL. The staff here was always happy and helpful. They brought our food and drinks quickly and were honest when giving suggestions on what new food/pizza toppings to order. This place isn't just for pizza for you pizza haters our there. Visited this place for the first time last week. Place was very crowded. Lots of festivities, lots of kids, clearly a family place. Pizza was average. Price was TWICE OR MORE, what would be reasonable or customary! Will absolutely NEVER go back short of a post apocalyptic, Book of Eli scenario! Rest assured 1st and last visit to this mellow mushroom, NOTHING compared to the 1 in boone nc and in Bristol va . Cheesesteak sub had no taste and the calazone's were half the size and tasteless. Appeared to be a good place for those who drink to get drunk, as you call your order in for pick up and they seat you at the bar to get your food. The pizza here is pretty good but not great. I've had better pies at the other MM locations so it could just be the pizza I ordered. I will say that the crust is amazingly good though. Our server was exceptional - friendly, prompt, and helpful. But the pizza was so overdone on the bottom that it was burned black. I guess we could have sent it back to have it made over. But it would have taken more time and we had already waited too long for the kitchen to get our pizza ready. We'll go back one more time and if it is burned again, we'll talk to the manager and leave. And they won't get a third chance to burn a pizza for us. After moving here from Asheville, I thought Mellow Mushroom would be a fmailiar friendly place. NOT! This place in Johnson City seemed to be a yuppy atmosphere with hippies working. Be one or the other! I ordered my fav.- Steak and Cheese Sandwich. Since I am allergic to onions & green peppers, I put ketchup on my sandwich. This place didnt have ANY ketchup in the house. I didnt eat my sandwich but paid for it. The next time our group decided to have a luncheon there, I had to stop at McDonalds and get hella ketchup packets in a bag and walk in with a McDonalds bag. Its embarassing, and not necessary. Even if they dont sell a lot of items where ketchup would be used- they sell one item at least where it is a possibility that ketchup would be desired. I am not the only one who likes steak and cheese with ketchup surely to God! The food also takes a long time. Dont ever go on lunch hour unless you got 2 hours to eat. read more

The pizza is good. Not great, but good. The prices are a bit ridiculous for their specialty pizzas. They do have a nice bar and large outdoor seating as well. Aesthetically, the outside of this mellow is pretty ugly, but they make up for it with nice booths and nice interior decorating. This trip to MM was just ok. We ordered an appetizer and pizza. The appetizers came out fairly quick, but we waited forever on our pizza...the manager then came and told us, that the printer had jammed and didn't print our pizza order, he apologized and removed it from our bill. Apparently they felt very bad, as the appetizers were charged at half off. However, the pizza, when we did get it, was burned on the bottom. It was still edible, and over all good. Had we not waited so long in the first place, I probably would have returned it. read more

I frequent this place pretty often and drive about 35 minutes to do so for a few reasons. Firstly, the staff (bartenders and servers alike) are incredibly nice and more importantly knowledgeable about the beers that they have on tap and will be more then happy to let you try a beer to see how you feel about it. The food is good and although a little pricey, you pay for a good quality product which you absolutely receive. They have a great outdoor seating area which makes after work drinks/dinner very nice. It is just a very good atmosphere for a bar and if you go on Tuesday nights they have Team Trivia which is a great time with friends. read more

Came around lunch time. Wasn't that packed. First time trying this place out. My in laws swore by it. I got their Buffalo Chicken pizza. Was really good. I am a crust chucker haha but this crust I actually ate. It was covered in a Parmesan cheese and what I can only describe as a light buttery/garlic spread. My wife got the chicken & cheese sandwich on a pita, she said it was a little salty and my daughter got a kids French bread cheese pizza with apple slices. The waitress came around frequently, as did the host. Always filling up my drink and I'm a thirsty guy! Haha. So that was nice. Very friendly staff. Bathroom was nice too. I give it a 3/5 stars because the bill was high. $50 when all was said and done, that included tip. Nothing really jumped out at me. Maybe this place is popping in the summer. read more

after my expeirence here, i will never understand why people rave about this place. When we got here, the table was dirty (and the restaurant was not at a busy time). I had to ask our server if he could wipe it down, and he acted very annoyed when we did so. the prices are outrageous. $28 for a medium pizza with like 3 toppings? really? the pizza was not worth the money. i feel like Little Ceasars is the same quality. and what made me the most angry was that when the server came back to refill our drinks, he knocked the pizza on the floor while my friend and I were on our second slices. which is fine, honest mistake, but he didn't offer to make a new one AND didn't take it off the bill. he literally just said "whoops, not sure what happened there. I think I can give you guys half-off another pizza if you order another one, but I'll have to check with the boss". Really?? I'm sure we could have complained if we wanted to, but we were sort of just over it. We will not be returning. if you want much better pizza, better service, and better prices walk 15 steps over in this parking lot and get Bella Vita -- cute, amazing italian family owned restaurant. read more

I've been eating at mellow locations for a long time and I've always enjoyed the food and drinks. Sometimes service can be awkward but I can care less for that, but the last time I went the server was just some stuck up college kid who could've cared less about being personable. At this location the food has been awful lately the past few times I've been in the past month. It seems like the food is cold or has been sitting for an hour or so. I don't like writing bad reviews because I don't want to be mean. However, the managers, servers, and dishwashers have jobs because of the food. So if the cooks are not making good food then they are putting everyone else's jobs in jeopardy. Sure, a lot of their money comes from regulars drinking at the bar, but the food shouldn't be so awful for the price. I believe that they can get better again to have decent food, but right now is not the time to go. For the price that they are charging the food is not worth it now. I know cooking is hard and some people don't respect it as the trade it is, but they need get their $h!t together and make sure the food is hot and presentable. If not, I'll give it two years. read more

It's ok. It's a really weird place. Waitress whacked my wife in the head with a pizza pan after cleaning a table. The weirdness (or "trendiness" if you prefer) translates into a careless spirit. Your food's late, etc. The atmosphere is "hey, dude, everything's cool...". It's not. That's the reality. Food just ok. Really high in fat. I liked the pizza crust. Salad was ok. Not exceptional. Just ok. I recommend another place or just go Monday nights for $1 pizza slices. At least you're not overpaying for just ok pizza. read more

Burned crust is a guarantee if you like that. Takes forever to even order much less get the food. Our waitress even forgot our plates and silverware and never brought a pizza raiser. Decent food but highly overpriced, drinks included. They forget your sauces and side items even when they're included in the menu listing. Loud. I've been coming here since it opened but tonight was the last straw. Inattentive, uncaring staff, they choose to stand around and gossip. Many people give good reviews because they either caught a lucky night or have low standards. Shitty to mediocre at best experience. Mello Mushroom pizza is great -- a little over priced but mostly worth it. My family and I have been to a number of Mello Mushroom restaurants throughout the region and we have mostly had good experiences. We live closest to this MM on Roan Street in Johnson City and have been numerous times. But there are few things that make me suggest takeout over eating in the restaurant. First, unless you get a booth, it really has the feel of being in a fishbowl. Some might like this of course. But I know many people who prefer a little less fishbowl experience when they pay MM's prices. That, I suppose, is not such a big deal. But more importantly is the issue with service. Mostly we have had good service when dining in. But there have been times when I thought the management was putting too high a premium on a certain look for the waitstaff rather than competence in customer service. I know they are going for a sort of eclectic-hippy -weird aesthetic and I am ok with this. But some of their employees would benefit greatly from further customer service training. I was in the restaurant recently with my family and we waited a long time for our pizza (simple order of 1 large cheese pizza). We started noticing that everyone around us had their pizzas and there were 4 tables that we could see who came in after us (ranging from 5 -15 minutes behind us) all of whom had their orders (orders far more complex than ours). I inquired with our server and told her exactly what I have just described. She said she would look into it and then came by our table a bit later with our pizza saying that it had been boxed up mistakenly labeled as a pickup order. Mistakes happen I know. But this is when you ought to say something like "let me get you another glass of wine on the house to make up for this oversight." All in all, good food but I recommend takeout. read more
