Mellow Mushroom is one of those places that it seems like everyone has visited. I'd heard such good things about it for years and finally got the chance to go. Though the restaurant wasn't very full for a Saturday lunch, the service was a bit slow and it took a while for our pizza, the house special, to reach us. When it did arrive, it was no longer hot. Maybe they were short on food runners. Still, the pizza was good and looked great. The ambiance is fun, with funky decor and a cool menu. Hands down the best pizza I have had so far in Texas! We were wondering around the "Spooktakular" wine event last weekend and stopped in for a bite. To share we started with the Spinach Artichoke Dip-A rich blend of five cheeses baked with spinach and artichokes. Served with garlic toast points. I ordered the small Mighty meaty-Mellow red sauce base with mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, ham and applewood smoked bacon. Also ordered was the Great White-Olive oil and garlic base with sun-dried roasted tomatoes, provolone, authentic sheep's milk feta cheese, seasoned ricotta, fresh basil, mozzarella, roma tomatoes, and onions. Their pretzel appetizers is really just pizza dough so although they aren't true pretzels they are still pretty good and they come with marinara sauce and queso for dipping. The star of this meal was their Philly Cheesesteak Calzone which was quite nicely filled and their dough to filling ratio was on point. I absolutely love the pizza here. The flavors and presentation are all top notch. Great ingredients, even better taste, I could eat a whole large pizza to myself and sometimes I do ! Would recommend the Great White which is their Hawaiian style. So delicious. I have been going to Mellow Mushroom in McKinney for about 5 years. Every visit is always better than the last. I'm usually there at least twice a week. The service is top notch every time whether it be at the bar or in the dining room. The entire crew has been friendly and courteous on every visit. The kitchen staff, the servers, the bartenders, general manager, front house manager, hosts have all been professional and they all take their jobs seriously. If it weren't for the great service, I definitely would not have been a repeat customer for the last 5 years. In particular, Matt and Regan make an effort to keep guests coming back by getting to know customers and making them feel welcome. They are the main reason I keep returning because they make me feel like more than a guest. If you're looking for a "Cheers" atmosphere, the bar at Mellow Mushroom in McKinney is the place to be. This is our second time coming to this location, we only came for a family members birthday. (Wouldn't pick this if I could and it was the family members choice) There is six of us, I and another both ordered the full Hoagies, the onions and green bell peppers were crunchy not even cooked at all. Then three of us shared a pizza. If you look at the photo above, you see the dough showing with no cheese or sauce, absolutely disgusting. The last person ordered a burger and they were out of everything including salt and pepper (like what how are you out of that), tater totes which were supposed to be on the hoagies and burger which they were out of. They were also out of a lot. The burger has a funky, nasty, brutal smell. And instead of the tater totes because they're were out of them, you could get chips and one out of the three wanted a house salad instead of the chips and received arugula instead and it was not as expected, the lettuce was weird looking. I ordered a pineapple drink with coconut and I swear it was straight up pineapple juice for coattails, absolutely nasty. When we said something about the pizza they said they would bring out a small cheese pizza which we waited forever. They said that instead and did not comp it. I would never go back to this place ever again. I do not recommend going to this place, absolutely disgusting! I rate this place a 0/10. I recommend not even stepping foot into this place, save your money. read more

Ok, I really wanted to like Mellow Mushroom so much more to give them that 4th and 5th star BUT my pizza was so burnt on the bottom it's all I could taste! My husband and daughter loved their pizza though. They did the 50/50 option so she could have all cheese and he could have what he wanted on his half. Their pizza was not burnt. He also got an order of wings and said for a pizza place, they were good lol. Sometimes wings at pizza joints are, in his eyes, hit or miss. The customer service was great and I am obsessed with the downtown McKinney area. This spot really does well in this area of town because of how cool it looks inside. I did happen to use the restroom while I was there and 2 stalls were out of toilet paper and the trash can was FILLED with paper towels. I couldn't even push it down to help create more space. I am 100% going to give this place another try because I love that they have vegan pizza. We had a nice team lunch for 20 here on a late Sunday afternoon. Food and service were great! Lost a star because they wouldn't take reservations for our group, which I called 2 weeks in advance, as well as offered a deposit! We had to show up and get on their waitlist and even that was hard to do as the hostess was insistent that our group would have to wait hours to be sat! They did end up having room for us after a short time and the server did an amazing job! We found our favorite pizza. I am so happy I was in a mood for pizza which is a huge surprise. I have yet to find a sauce that wasn't too sickenly sweet, sour or tasteless. I haven't heard it called that since I was back in New York. Somehow seeing that word cinched it. Did I mention they use a Stone-baked oven? They have a good selection of specialty pizza. Of course they would have a pizza named Holy Shiitake. I did a build your own. I ordered a small with Italian sausage & jalapeños. Opened the box & my mouth nearly dropped. I look down & all I see is sausage & jalapeños. I have never seen a pizza so full of ingredients. I never did see the sauce but oh man the taste. My Nona would be proud. That 1st bite did me in. Ah yes, they also cut the pizza in 4 slices. You pick that baby up & it's huge. So when I'm in the mood for pizza this will be my go to. Next order will be the calzone filled with mozzarella, provolone & ricotta. After a super fun evening at Arcade 92 we decided to walk over to Mellow Mushroom for dinner since they had some good vegan options on the menu. The vibe was so groovy and cool! Lots of colors and really neat decor. They have options other than pizza, like burgers and stuff. I was going for the vegan pizza though :) I ordered a small build your own with dairy free cheese, pineapple (yes I am one of those people that is for pineapple on pizza), jalapeños and black olives. This was one of the best pizzas I have ever had! The dairy free cheese was so creamy and melted beautifully, the sauce was delicious and the crust was perfect! Not too thick, not too thin. My friends enjoyed a burger and a meat lovers pizza and didn't have any complaints. My husband however, did have some unfortunate luck at Mellow Mushroom which is why I'm rating 4 stars instead of 5. We were a group of 4 ordering together and my husband ordered last. He also ordered a build your own pizza but unfortunately our server forgot to get his pizza in the system. So the 3 of us got our food and he did not. Once our server came to check on us he let her know that he did not get his pizza. She went over to check in and my husband heard her say she forgot to put it in.. we were sitting right next to the counter they put the ready orders on.. she avoided us and didn't come back for almost 10 mins and told us that the receipt didn't print out all the way and that's why his pizza was missed. He did eventually get his pizza but by that time we were done eating, he was hangry and it wasn't the best experience for us as a group. Hopefully next time we visit and go here it will be a better experience for everyone. Either way, great pizza!
