I had the shakshuka platter that included a round warm pita. I could see steam as I ripped the pita. The shakshuka came in a thin pot with a handle. The pita tasted good on its own, but even better dipped in the tomato sauce. It looks small, but was filling. For an iced drink, I had the Morroccan mint tea. I ordered the shakshuka plate + eggplants, which came with pita bread and some sort of nut-based sauce. It felt like it was a relatively small amount of food, but all-in-all it was well-cooked. I did not expect the egg to be fully cooked, but I felt like it didn't really negatively affect the overall flavors at all. Went for brunch after seeing good reviews on the area and my friends and I were a little disappointed. The service was good; the staff were very friendly. The food, however, was mediocre. A good portion of the menu seem to be appetizers, so the portion is small. I had the shakshuka and the tomato/ acidic taste was overwhelming. I also got a drink (lemonana, I think) and it was very sour and bitter- it tastes as though the entirety of lemon peels had been thrown in the blender to make the drink. Yorkville is an area that I do not spend much time in but maybe I should start. This is a cool trendy coffee shop that I think has an israeli theme. It has some outdoor seating as well but I preferred to sit inside. There are only a few seats inside but it wasn't too packed when I went. FYI, there is a 1 hour time limit for sitting inside which is understandable in Covid times. I had a tea and enjoyed my time there. What a cute cafe - definitely a little gem. Service was friendly. Cozy Cafe vibes w/ an open kitchen. Seating is limited but wasn't an issue for us that day. I had the green omelette pita sandwich which came w/ flavorful harissa sauce and fresh salad. I also had a Ginger-Lemon-Apple-Pineapple Juice which was incredibly refreshing as well; I love ginger so the sharp ginger taste won me over. A friend told us about this place since it's near where we live so on a lazy Saturday afternoon we decided to check it out. ATMOSPHERE: Inside is very cozy and has a half cafe feel half coffee shop. When you first walk in you are hit with a blend of smells including spices and coffee. There are some high tables, small tables and then high stools facing the window. It was pretty crowded when we came so we were barely able to find a seat. FOOD: They have coffee as well as food. The menu on Yelp is a bit outdated as they seem to have other options as well. We opted for 2 things and shared them. They both come with a tahini sauce I believe and an orange slice. PITA LABNEH - basically it's like a flat pita bread toasted with cheese and spices inside. It kind of me reminded me of a bagel with cream cheese but really thin. I honestly don't know why they charge so much if there's no meat, I think it was almost $10. It was pretty tasty. GREEN OMELETTE SANDWICH - a large omelette with veggies stuffed inside of a pita with lettuce and tomato. It was pretty hefty and is definitely enough for 1 person to feel full. I don't normally like omelettes but this wasn't bad since it was in a sandwich form. Overall, good food and I would definitely like to try some of their other items and hummus as well. read more

Between thrift shopping, my friend and I realized we were in need of a little pick-me-up, so we popped into Mellow Yellow. First off, it's an adorable shop and had seating, so it looks like you could enjoy chilling there for a while (though my friend and I ended up doing takeout). Second, the guy who worked the counter was very kind, answering some questions and giving us a recommendation on snacks. I assume he is the owner, because he seemed to know everything and was clearly excited to be sharing his shop with us. We ended up getting two pastries (bourekas) which were delicious, especially because he warmed them up for us. My friend got a coffee and I got an iced chai latte, which was very smooth and perfect for an abnormally warm weekend in November. I stopped in for breakfast with a friend on Saturday morning. It was prime breakfast hour so I was worried about finding a seat, but luckily there were two small tables still available. I was in a little bit of a time crunch because I had to get to a family event in about an hour, but Mellow Yellow's food prep was pretty quick. It's a nice "fast casual" spot for when you don't need a full dining service for breakfast/brunch. Besides the great timinig, the food was fantastic! I loved the Shakshuka Sandwhich - it was so flavorful and the perfect amount of food. It's refreshing to have so many menu options for breakfast besides the usual bacon/eggs/pancake options that every place by me offers! The sandwhich had two eggs that were hard-cooked, but not at all dry. There was also the perfect amount of sauce to flavor the sandwhich yet keep it from getting soggy. It was served with a side of tahini to dip in, and an orange slice. I also have to mention how I loved the cute tray everything was served on. Even for a quick breakfast, that one small touch really elevated the meal and made it seem extra special. I also had a Chai Latte which was lovely. Very creamy and not overly sweet. This funky UES coffee shop makes you want to stay and relax all day. From the moment you enter, you're warmly greeted by the barista. The wood clad interior decor make you feel like your transported from the city to a friend's place in the 1970s, at least that's how I feel each and every time. This place does amazing dishes, best described as Middle Eastern or Mediterranean. My favorite is the Shakshuka, which I never had until moving to New York, but apparently is a popular dish at many brunch spots and has become one of my favorite things to get when at brunch.
