I wanted to like it but my breakfast experience here was just okay. Not too bad but not too memorable. Shakshuka platter was tiny and a bit too sweet for me. The portion was small, more like a kid's meal even though I added eggplant at extra cost. Hummus platter was pretty much just a hummus and a pita bread. The best was the pickle and hummus a bit bland. I don't see why this place got so many good reviews. Maybe it's just this day. Caveat: I have only been here once, so there's a good chance I would have a much better experience the second or third time. My first visit was perhaps a little unique because there was a family (or maybe two families?) with about 5 kids screaming their little heads off and running amock as if the restaurant were their living room. I mean it's cute maybe the first five seconds, but after that, it made this place downright UN-mellow. As small as it was, we were able to nab a seat at a table with bar stools. Overall, it was a pretty uncomfortable dine-in experience given how loud it was (kids, lots of people coming in and out). The food was good, but nothing to write home about (we both got the pita za'atar). I would definitely recommend this as a quick stop for a bite of breakfast before catching a train or commuting to work. But it's not a place to linger and really enjoy your food. read more

Our local businesses need us more than we can even imagine. Stay away from the Starbucks across the street. They are doing just fine. Anyway, I've been wanting to try this place for a while but I've never been quite sure of the hours. I came here this morning for a dirty chai. Which was delicious and priced appropriately $5.50. It smells divine in here and you can tell the vibes are great. They have an awesome menu, with an open kitchen layout, that I will definitely try soon. Such a cute cafe with good food. My husband and I enjoyed the cozy yet eclectic atmosphere here. It was a little bit cramped and busy on a Saturday morning around 9 but we were able to grab seats. We got a chai latte, shakshuka, and moussaka. In the end, we did think that our dishes were similar but both were delicious. The shakshuka sauce to us tasted sweeter while the moussaka has a more tart tasting sauce. JERUSALEM BAGEL! It's my favorite bagel in all of New York (yes yes, we can debate the technicalities of what makes a bagel a bagel). Nevertheless, I feel this Jerusalem bagel is underrated. Perfectly crunchy on the outside covered in sesame seeds, and soft and chewy on the inside, comes with an assortment of feta, hummus, boiled egg, babaganoush, etc (sometimes they switch it up - always delicious), and it's a generous BIG bagel. I unfortunately have moved out of the city for a few months, but on the day I moved out, I made it a point to have one last Jerusalem bagel from Mellow Yellow. I've also enjoyed their shakshuka, and smoothies, and coffees, and frankly, all their food is great. The vibes are chill; it feels like a cozy oasis from the city, especially if you hang out inside during the summer (at least pre-covid, there was a fan but not A/C, which somehow seems to work with this place). I did a quick Yelp search for a lunch spot next to my friends apartment (where I'm staying while I'm New York) and Mellow Yellow looked like it had the best reviews. I flocked. I glanced around the restaurant and noticed everyone had the same thing in front of them, Moussaka, so I ordered that without question. I also ordered a small coffee and used the refrigerator next to the counter filled with several different milks to complete my perfect iced drink. I appreciated not having to pay extra for the shot of soy. It seems like everything is made to order? Or maybe things are premade and then placed in the oven upon order for the final bit of baking and cheese melting, because my food came out within 10 minutes and the eggplant and potatoes inside definitely did a lot more roasting to get their consistency and flavor. Overall I think the Moussaka was great! The red sauce had really nice flavor and all of the major ingredients were cooked well. That being said, the cheese on the side was not cooked and that kind of threw the whole dish off. I think it could have used a little more time in the oven. The bread that it came with was hot and delicious. So soft and a perfect add on to dip into the eggplant dip and other white dish that my order came with. There are a handful of tables inside so I can see how this place would be hard to sit down out during busy times, and the line moved pretty slow in general. Be prepared for both. I would definitely return to try other menu items! I also didn't like that with everyone's order they received a plastic silverware set. Unfortunately they were not compostable and I do not think that they were at recyclable either so it seemed like a big waste for a restaurant that's already cleaning their pans to not go ahead and clean the silverware as well. I tried the moussaka and spinach pastry with the Moroccan tea. The moussaka was very different from what I've typically had. This was very cheesy and came in a pan with bread on the side, looking like shakshuka. It was super delicious and very well made, you can tell they really make all of their dishes to order. It came with a tahini sauce and some baba ganoush, both of which were also wonderful. The spinach pastry was good too, though nothing out of the ordinary. I wouldn't get the Moroccan tea again, mostly because it wasn't what I expected and tasted like mint/basil water. Nice and small. Only thing I would say that needs improvement is the level of loudness & the service at the counter. I think it is important to attend one person at a time. Not do extreme multitasking. It tends to look sloppy instead of effective. On the other hand, the loudness can easily be toned down by turning the music low, people will follow. I would also recommend that they cover the pastries placed at the counter. It is easily accessible to reach and touch. Bugs can go into it. Stopped in for some breakfast while visiting the UES. The cafe has a bright yellow door, kitschy art on the walls and indoor seating (though, limited.. it's New York). My friend and I ordered, between the two of us, the shakshouka, two skillet eggs, Israeli salad, and some coffee. The skillet eggs came with a small veggie side and tahini and pita. As someone who's been eating Israeli cuisine all of my life, I must say that this was a really great effort. The shakshouka was just spicy enough without being inaccessible to most palates, and the eggs and Israeli salad were an awesome, super fresh vegetarian breakfast. The pricing was reasonable, we got out of there for about $16 per person, with coffee, inclusive of a tip. The service staff there was super sweet, too. When they realized it was taking a bit long for the shakshouka to cook (it's done in an individual skillet and takes a bit longer than your standard egg fare), they sent out an extra basket of pita and hummus, so my friend had something to eat while I got started on my breakfast.
