I been here several times before traveling over the road and never had an issue. Today I got the Country Club Omelette with hash browns and French toast, with orange juice. When I went to check out, instantly I had to vomit. Moments after getting to the parking lot I had to go, everything that I had eaten came up. So I really hope this isn't food poison. Because my body has rejected everything that I ate here. Got here at 6:30am left at 7:15am. Just hope the vomit is the end of it and not get worse. read more

My visit to Mel's diner was it not the best experience in the beginning. My family and I walked into the diner and was not greeted in a timely matter. There were four employees that had looked at my family and walked past us without even saying hello or telling us that it is not open seating. As we're standing there everybody is staring at my family and made it very uncomfortable that we weren't welcomed there. After not being greeted I decided that it was probably open seating so my family and I went to a table that looked like it was clean but was dirty. After we sat down a lady approached us and told us that it wasn't open seating and that we should've waited to be sat. She then proceeded to ask how many there were of us and there was only four. After she asked I kindly asked her if she could clean the table off for us and she gave us smart remark of if you would've waited we would've been able to give you a clean table. At this point I was very irritated with the fact that people were talking to me as if I was stupid. She then came back with a spray bottle and a rag to clean off our table and mentioned that if the health department came in and saw that she was cleaning the table with my family sat at it that they would receive a fine. Unfortunately the dirty table Should be the least of their concern of receiving a fine. As I looked around the restaurant the walls had spattered food on them in the booths along with a carpet that doesn't look like it's been clean since the 1970s. After she clean the table the lady looked at us and said that our server will be with us shortly and that she doesn't know how long it's going to be because she doesn't know how super busy the other server is. My family is very understanding when it comes to the restaurant business and we are a family that has worked in service industry for multiple years so we understand when a server is busy. As the lady goes behind the bar railing she talks to the server that's taking care of us and lets her know that we sought ourselves and she didn't have a very nice tone when she was speaking about our table. After waiting about five minutes our server just kept staring at our table and talking to her other guests that were sitting up at the bar. A couple minutes had passed and three gentlemen had walked in and she had acknowledged them and took their drink order as they sat beside us in another booth. She then looked at us and then looked away and the lady that had sat us told her that my family is her table as well and she needs to take our order too. At this point I am very irritated again and I'm ready to leave the restaurant because of the disrespect. The lady then drops off the drinks for the other table of men and then comes and takes our order for our drinks. After receiving our drinks we order an appetizer cheese curds which were amazing. Then shortly after we were able to put our order in for our lunch. The gentleman that sat next to us had ordered after us and received their food before us. I do understand that their food did come out faster because my father did order a steak which I am not going to complain about on that point. After receiving our food I would say that the food is mediocre and nothing to be too crazy about. It is a diner style food so it's always going to be different at other diners that you go to which is totally understandable. After we finished our lunch we ordered pie because it was my father's birthday and he wanted a nice piece of pie. The pie was also mediocre it tasted like a Jell-O packet mixed into a pie form. After we finished her lunch the servers were much nicer to us and I'm not completely sure why their mood changed towards the end of the meal but the beginning was very rough. I will not be coming back to this establishment because of how my family was treated in the beginning and will be rating this a one star. It was game day in Nebraska with Ohio State coming to Lincoln for a Big 10 Conference football game. About three-quarters of the customers and almost all of the staff were decked out in red with various logos proclaiming allegiance to the mighty Cornhuskers. Regrettably, later that day, the Cornhuskers were more meek than mighty, losing to the Buckeyes 56-14. The other thing that I couldn't help but notice as we waited for a table was the Daily Specials board hanging in back of the cash register. Topping the list of specials was a Country Eggs Benedict. I had yet to have Eggs Benedict on our previous 35 breakfast stops and was waiting for the right opportunity to come along in which to give them a try. It seemed like it was as good as time as any with Mel's benedict selling for a very reasonable price. I ordered the Country Eggs Benedict. About 30 seconds after the waitress had left it hit me. "Did the waitress just ask me how I wanted my eggs done?" I asked my wife. "Yes, and you told her over easy" replied The Healthy One. "But I thought Eggs Benedict are all about poached eggs", I said. "That's true" said my wife. "Uh-oh". What arrived at the table certainly didn't look like Eggs Benedict. This was a Benedict Arnold; a traitor to the Hollandaise sauce nation. Spanning the upper wall of the diner were famous short movie lines such as "There's no place like home." and "May the force be with you." Ironically, directly in front of our table, right above another large Nebraska man, the line read "Houston we have a problem." There was white gravy, there was a biscuit, there were the eggs over easy, and to my consternation there was what I ate yesterday morning, chicken fried steak. Has anyone in their right mind eaten chicken fried steak with white gravy two days in a row? Well I have. I finished the whole damn thing and I found it to be delicious. This steak was really tender and the batter was tasty and not too obtrusive. The gravy had just enough pepper in it to make it interesting. The biscuit was soft, yeasty, and satisfying. And the eggs; I don't remember tasting the eggs as they must have been overwhelmed by the steak and gravy. Despite the surprise, I was very happy with the meal. I guess I'll save the traditional (urban not country) Eggs Benedict for another morning. I received one of those here's-a-thermos-of-coffee-so-I-don't-have-to-keep-coming-back-to-refill-your-cup container. Usually this is a red flag warning that the coffee is not going to be great. I imagine they end up throwing quite a lot of it out. At least I hope they're throwing it out and not reheating the leftover. Mel's coffee was surprisingly good. It was a notch above the typical Midwestern coffee we had been drinking. It seemed Mel's had enough staff to handle the busy Saturday morning breakfast crowd. Nevertheless, it was not like anyone was standing around checking their Facebook posts. Every staff person was scurrying around like squirrels gathering acorns in October. Our waitress, Meg was a friendly woman who gave me the feeling that she was no novice when it came to taking orders and serving food. This is by far one of the best restaurants in Freemont. The only thing I regret is not coming here sooner for my six week stay. If you like amazing home cooked food with HUGE portion sizes for a great price this is the place for you. Went there because it is next to hotel we are staying at. Two of us had the sat night special of prime rib. Asked for medium rare. There was no pink in the middle and was quite dry. Our salads were just a small plate of lettuce, no other vegetables. Soup of the day was this weird hamburger, bacon, Mac & cheese soup. One of us tried it out of curiosity. It was terrible. Another of us had meatloaf and he said it was dry and didn't taste good. Maybe their breakfast is better. I travel for a living and eat out all the time. This place was packed upon our arrival. We were seated quickly after a table opened up. Server was very polite but seemed frazzled, we had to ask for menus when she brought out our drink order. Food seemed to take a bit longer than expected but it's worth the wait. It is Delicious. Biscuits and gravy are a sausage patty in a biscuit smothered in gravy. Grilled chicken sandwich is full of flavor and juicy. Sandwiches come with a side of fries, tots, coleslaw, salad, or for an additional charge you can get onion rings or sweet potato fries. Breakfast sides come with hash browns, pancakes, or a regular biscuit and gravy. Chicken strips taste like they're breaded in house. Light and crispy. Kids chicken strips $4.99 a drink is extra. Two kids pancake doesn't offer anything for a side either. The only fruit they had to offer today was canned peaches. Prices are comparable to other diners. I will return here in the future but will try to avoid the rush as this place is quite small and doesn't offer much for a waiting area. read more

Excellent home cooking! We came for a quick lunch between baseball games, and everyone LOVED their food from age 9 to 85! Mel's quickly and kindly served our rowdy crowd some of the best food we've had in Nebraska! We thoroughly enjoyed a variety of selections, including the chili cheese dog, spaghetti with meat sauce, eggs / biscuits & sausage gravy w a side of bacon, BLT sandwich, fried chicken and buffalo chicken wings. Not the same. Had lunch there. I always get boasted chicken dinner. Chicken was definitely undercooked and way too pink for poultry. I was also disappointed in soup. Extremely disappointed in the owner of this restaurant. We went for breakfast on my daughter's graduation day to spend time with family from out of state. It started pretty well with the restaurant doing all the could to accommodate our party of 10 on a busy Sunday morning. Our server was pleasant. However, after watching 2 tables near us get turned over (sat, served, paid, resat) while we waited for our food, a member of our party who happens to be younger and look a little unconventional, went to ask for an eta on our food. He was polite and was not demanding immediate service, just an estimate of how much longer. The owner rudely informed him that a 10 top is different from smaller parties. Of which, having 3 people in our party who have worked in the food service industry, we are completely aware. The owner became confrontational and came to our table trying to speak to me about the situation telling the man to shut up and he did not want to speak to him. End result - the man in our party who was disrespected, I can only assume based on his appearance and age, was kicked out simply for refusing to be disrespected. Our family breakfast was ruined and quite frankly if it had not been for the devastated look on my mother's face I also would have walked out. read more

Was traveling through Fremont & needed to stop to get a quick bite to eat. I looked on yelp for a good restaurant. There aren't a lot of options in Fremont for a middle to hi class restaurants. I've eaten at a few places in fremont in the past & I will never go back to them again. The place is like a 1960's dinner. There was a decent selection for the kids menu. The adult menu has a lot of choices. My children are picky eaters & they didn't walk away hungry. The portions size for adult & children were good (on the large size). There fried foods have a homemade batter wich was excellent. The kids pancakes were excellent. The bacon cheddar Mel burger was awesome. We went on a Sunday night & they were very busy. The employees were very friendly. Our food was served quickly & all 6 dinners were fesh & hot. When we travel through Fremont from now on we will be stopping hear to eat. If it was possible i would give this place zero stars. We always go to Mac's Cafe and decided to give Mels a try. I guess that was a bad idea. We sat for 30 minutes and got our salads. I had ordered coffe so i had something to drink (i was never brought the cream i askes for, so i went to the counter and had to ask again to finally get that. My husband had iced tea, and never got a refill after the initial glass. 20 minutes later we received the appetizers we ordered, and 5 minutes later we got our dinner. I had chicken parmesan which is why we went there, but i had ordered the marinara sauce on the side, this was definitely not on the side. The waitress stated that she would fix it for me. She came back 5 minutes later and stated they were now out of spaghetti really. My husband got two over cooked pieces of catfish and his hashbrowns were so overcooked they were in edible. I spent $18.00 and all i got to eat was a salad and some cauliflower. I won't return! read more
