I pulled up and jumped out to check out the menu. I thought you ordered at the window, but they actually come to you to take your order. I got the footlong coney, fries, and an orange drink. Whole thing was $7, which is super cheap! I'll echo what others said...it's not in a great area. Was going to eat in the car (they bring out a tray with condiments on it if you want to) but decided to use one of the picnic tables instead in the back. My meal was good. Definitely messy. The coney was just chili. In hindsight, I would have added cheese. Oh well. I agree with others that the chili has something sweet in it. It's not bad, but be aware. The fries are good and crispy without salt which is a bonus to us. The chili seems to be a little too sweet for my taste on the chili dog. They say they're famous for their tenderloins and all it is Pete's fritter patty from the frozen food department at Walmart. Maybe if you had pickled it would be more tastier. read more

This is basically your typical mom and pop drive-in. The root beer and tenderloins are awesome. Basically anything you get is going to be deep fried and delicious. I especially love the breaded cauliflower. The business is very old and located on a rough side of town, so definitely don't expect anything super classy and clean, but the service has always been fast and all the waitresses are nice. This place has been around for ages and so has the flattop, which is why it's the best. Always uses good, quality ingredients (probably way above for the prices they charge). Fast service and the food is really good btw. Lost of people say it's not in the best neighborhood but to my knowledge there's NEVER been any issues (besides, aren't ALL the best food joints off the beaten path?). West side of town, it's a dive, got there around 12:30 joint was packed. Curb service or walk up, tables out back. Menu on the wall, got the double cheeseburger, sans pickles, kids meal was grilled cheese, fries, small soda. Burger was great, crispy edges, fresh toppings, bun was toasted. Grilled cheese, just like mom would make it, fries to me were ok would have liked them crisper. In an out 15 min, grand total, $6.54. Probably one of the most understated old time drive ins around the Indianapolis area. This little place is in Mars Hill along Kentucky Avenue, and if you blink, you might just blow past it. Don't let the little, timid, aging structure fool you. This place gets busy around meal times. The burgers are the flat, crispy edge types. Because of this, I recommend getting the double or jumbo as opposed to the single. If you like cheese on your burger, do it because they will serve it nice and melty. In my humble opinion, the real stars of this establishment are the fried up sides. If somebody wrote the book on deep fried cauliflower, it must have been Mel's. I liked the crispy breading, and the cauliflower was hot but not mushy. In addition, they have mushrooms, onion rings, jalapeno howlers, cheese nuggets, and sweet corn nuggets. If you don't see something on the yellow menu board, make sure you look at the grease board because that's where the corn nuggets were listed. The prices are a value. In the grand scheme of the Indianapolis area dining scene, remember this place is a little drive in, and drive in food is what you will get. Keeping that in mind, it is a winner. read more

We are out of towners and heard of Mel's through Yelp. Other Yelpers are right, the neighborhood is not the best, but the food outshines everything. I totally recommend the peanut butter/chocolate shake. It tastes like a Reese's cup. So good. My hubby got the pork tenderloin and a cheeseburger. Said both were outstanding. Our son loved the grilled cheese and ate everything, including the crusts. The waitress was attentive and very friendly. Which was surprising given the atmosphere of the restaurant. Ordered takeout a few weeks ago and the service was fast. Don't let the exterior and surroundings fool you, the burger was absolutely DELICIOUS. The gooey melted cheese alone I'd come back for. The onion rings are on point, crispy, crunchy, real onions - non of that onion mush Burger King tries to sell you.
