a pizza being lifted from a box

Service is super friendly, but that's the only positive I can give them. Stuffed pizza was over cooked, and the cheese was stuck to the parchment paper. The inferno wings were not spicy at all.

XL pizza. 1/2 Canadian bacon and onion, 1/2 sausage mushroom.

Mel's is in a small, dated strip mall next to some dance studios. The pizza is very good but I would recommend getting it to go or delivered. The restaurant booths and bathrooms are very dated and quite frankly, dirty. I dined in and had an ample sized dinner salad and a large pizza so I could take some home. Staff is nice, and pizza was very good. Had 1/2 Canadian bacon and onion, other half sausage mushroom. If I was rating the pizza alone it would be five stars.

    Raw peppers, no pizza sauce.

Absolutely terrible. We are BEYOND disappointed. Ordered 2 calzones and both were very dry, my peppers were raw, maybe a tablespoon of pizza sauce in each and they came with a side of spaghetti meat sauce. What even is that? The french fries were so disgusting my 2yo bit into one, spit it out and started crying and gagging. I ran to grab her a drink and tried a fry. I wish I could describe it. My husband wanted to head to the police station to have them tested. Kind of like they were burned and then tossed in paint thinner. Seriously tastes like poison. They snapped like dry wood and you could still see the freezer burnt crystals on the inside. Completely nauseating. They also completely left out the jalapeño poppers we ordered and paid for, but given how terrible everything else was, we probably didn't want them anyway. This place needs to get shut down. It took 45 minutes just to get less than poor quality food and not even all of it. STAY FAR AWAY. Such a waste of money.

Burnt crust is a free topping at Mel's.

A good thin pie for the value. I like the cheese golden brown, which was nice . Not blown away but solid.

The suburbs don't usually inspire much confidence when someone tells you they're taking you out for…read morepizza. More often than not, you're looking at another tavern-cut pie, a dozen televisions screaming sports highlights, and a menu designed by committee. Safe. Predictable. Forgettable. Then there's Woodfire. I ended up here with my family celebrating my son's second birthday and was immediately reminded that every now and then, hidden among the endless strip malls and chain restaurants of the Chicago suburbs, you'll stumble across a place that actually gives a damn. The Vodka Pizza arrived looking almost too good to touch. Almost. Hot Calabrian vodka sauce. Fresh mozzarella. Shallot. Pepperoni. Ricotta. Basil. A combination that sounds familiar enough until that first bite lands and the heat punches through. Not the fake, watered-down, suburban version of spicy that restaurants use to avoid frightening anyone. This pizza has conviction. It has backbone. The Calabrian peppers make their presence known immediately and refuse to apologize for it. Good. Food should have an opinion. The crust, charred, blistered, beautifully imperfect, comes from house-made dough cooked in a wood-fired oven that sits like the beating heart of the restaurant. Every pie carries those little marks of fire that remind you an actual human being made it. Not a conveyor belt. Not a timer. Fire. Flour. Skill. And speaking of things that deserve respect, let's talk about the bar. Kevin has become something of a local legend in Dundee. The kind of bartender whose name gets mentioned before the cocktail list. The kind of guy who understands that making drinks isn't about pouring alcohol into a glass. It's hospitality, theater, craftsmanship, and just enough mischief to keep things interesting. Still chasing the heat from the pizza, I ordered the Spicy Flamingo. A dangerous drink. Sweet enough to invite you in. Spicy enough to keep you paying attention. The kind of cocktail that disappears faster than you intended and leaves you contemplating a second before the first one is gone. Around us, bussers moved through the dining room like a pit crew at Daytona. Tables were cleaned before they looked dirty. Empty glasses vanished. New guests were seated. The machine never stopped moving. Then there's Chef Mason. It's obvious someone in that kitchen understands the difference between cooking food and feeding people. There's technique here. Knowledge. Discipline. But thankfully none of the self-important nonsense that infects so many restaurants once they start believing their own press. Woodfire isn't trying to change your life. It's not trying to educate you. It's not trying to be the coolest restaurant in the room. Like Ferris Bueller, it understands that life moves pretty fast. So instead of chasing trends, it focuses on making exceptional handmade pizza, memorable pasta, serious cocktails, and creating a place where people actually want to spend an evening. In a world full of restaurants desperately trying to be something, Woodfire succeeds by simply being exactly what it is. And that's a hell of a lot rarer than it should be.

Woodfire fits naturally into the heart of Dundee -- relaxed, welcoming, and easy to enjoy. The pasta and appetizers are solid across the board, and the drinks round out the experience nicely. My friend started cutting into her pasta and immediately found a hair baked in. We called our server over and they immediately took it away to remake. They offered a complimentary dessert but we kindly asked to comp the dish instead. The Rigatoni Mama was tasty and a good portion to share! With all the hardships, our server Hannah could not have been better. She navigated the situation calmly and professionally. I could not be more impressed by her service level especially since the manager did not stop at our table to correct the situation.

The food is consistently incredible, and the portions are huge...you'll definitely be taking some home for lunch the next day. One thing that really sets Cucina Bella apart is the layout and atmosphere. They have three distinct seating areas, and each gives you a totally different experience. If you're looking for a more upbeat, lively vibe, grab a table near the bar. For a quieter, more romantic date night, the main dining room is perfect. They also have an overflow dining area, which is great when they're busy (and they usually are for a reason). The wine selection is excellent, and the bar staff can make just about any cocktail you're in the mood for. Whether you're celebrating something special, going out on a first date, or just want a great Italian meal, this place delivers every time. If you're anywhere near Algonquin and craving Italian, this spot is an absolute must!
