Curiosity quickly turned to a certain level of familiarity with basic toasted white bread and standard ingredients that give it a home style flavor and appearance. The Rubin I got had a nice flavor. Everyone's meals were good. The fries had way too much salt on them but a replacement was sent out. The tomato, onion, cucumber and feta salad was rather raw and uninspiring , perhaps needing more seasoning and time to marinate. The staff was courteous but seemed rather wanting to be off work. Lots of maintenance issues on the inside. Walls heavily scuffed by chair backs, graffiti and condiment splatter. The tables and floors were relatively clean however. Probably won't be returning any time soon. Wish it was better. At $60 for four basic sandwiches, I imagine most of the price is to pay for the rent. Even so, I was expecting more. read more

Took my out-of-town sis here for the first time. I cannot make this clear enough. You have to go to the $5 happy hour from 4-6 on weekdays. You're getting $10 apps for $5 and honestly that's all I want when I come now. The barons bites are the number one. The baked goat cheese and strawberries is delicious too. I do not think that that it's worth the $11 regular price but definitely the $5 happy hour. Their drink menu is also discounted during happy hour. I got the purple rain and it was delicious!! The best bang for your buck though is the bbq chip nachos. They're slathered in cheese, friend jalapeños, and bbq sauce. The last time I had them I did find a bone in the bbq and which quickly ruined my appetite. Not sure if I can get them again but I do think it was a fluke.... Ordered a Cuban and tomato basil soup and the sandwich was microwaved so much the meat was hard and unpalatable. the soup had a greasey mess floating on top and it tasted burned as having been on a warmer way too long. my wife's roast beef and cheese was the same. we will NOT. be back to the Hoover Melt again . $ 40 + dollars for a crappy meal. read more

It was my friend's 1st time here and she enjoyed it. We started off with the fried pickles and Mac & cheese egg rolls. Both were delicious! She ordered the flying Hawaiian while I ordered the chicken finger plate. Bad choice. I should have ordered a sandwich or salad. The chicken fingers were dry and tasteless & the coleslaw was awful. I was a little disappointed in Milt Hoover. First the good, the restaurant was spotless, the drink station was clean and well-stocked, and the staff was polite. The negative(s) are several. My sandwich was not made according to the description, so instead of having a Hawaiian sandwich, I had a ham on warm pineapple sandwich. The drinks on the scrolling menu board or not available, even after we purchased them. When I think of the word "melt" I think of patty melts and grilled cheese sandwiches. Neither peak my interest, but I am happy to report that Melt offers much more. The casual restaurant offer a full range of appetizers, soups, salads, and sandwiches. I had the Cuban sandwich for lunch on Thursday. I thought the pulled pork on the sandwich was very good; moist, and flavorful. The pulled pork stacked with ham, Swiss cheese, yellow mustard on a Cuban roll is a delicious combination. I've had Cuban sandwiches in Miami, and this comes very close. The roll just needed to be toasted more, it should be crunchy to rival an authentic Cuban. As my side, I opted for the Cucumber Tomato salad. It was rather plain, as I was expecting a vinegar marinated salad. Next time I might chose the kettle chips or Tomato Basil soup. Melt has other locations in Avondale and Huntsville. It a wonderful Alabama based sandwich shop that is a good alternative to restaurant chains like Jason's Deli and McAlister's. read more

Open during COVID. It was my first time at this location since it opened awhile back (early this year?). I loved the one in Avondale, and I had not doubt that this location would be different, except being closer to where I live. Great location to pull a large crowd at any time of day. Same great menu, good quality food, and good service. I had most of their sandwiches, but today went with the classic cheeseburger and fries. Hot, fresh, and filled me up. Never a disappointment. A great addition to Hoover. I love the food from Melt in downtown Birmingham, and this location the quality of food is no different. The service in my opinion is actually better here than the one downtown-very friendly and attentive employees but more importantly, how they've handled COVID-19. I've been here twice already and I have been extremely impressed with how safe and healthy they are making the place. There are sanitizing stations everywhere, employees are all wearing masks and maintaining appropriate distance, every table is being wiped down thoroughly after use, and the tables are distanced appropriately. Both times our orders have been brought to us promptly and accurately; one time my drink order got messed up and they gave me a free one on the house! What's interesting about this location is you order at the counter and they bring it to you; I don't remember the downtown location being this way but it doesn't bother me any! My favorites are the Mac Melt, the cheeseburger, and the Three Amigos. I've also tried the caprese flatbread and the fried Oreos and they are good as well. Make sure to get those beer battered fries with your sandwich! All in all, I've always enjoyed my time at Melt(both locations) and will keep coming back. read more

This is my second time eating from this location and I am pleasantly surprised by their consistency. Both times I have ordered the chicken pesto and it has been a hit. I love the crunch in the bread and the taste of the lightly seasoned fries. I am also a huge fan of the customer service. As soon as we came in to pick up our to go order, the girl at the register was prompt to greet us and get things going. I really enjoyed my meal from Melt. I called my order in and within 10-15 minutes of driving to the restaurant, it was ready to go. It smelled divine and I wanted to eat it while I was there. The service was great. We were so tempted to stay for happy hour after the sweet employee at the register told us all about Melt's deals. They have half priced beers, wines, etc. so I'll definitely keep this in mind as a happy hour spot. The chicken pesto sandwich was so delicious and filling. It paired well with the tomato soup. However, I do think the soup was very oily and lacked that intense tomato flavor that I usually like. I could see the oil separating from the soup and had to mix it up pretty well. I had never had it before, as I've always chosen the mac melt, and it had a great flavor and just the right amount of heat. Warning, some will find it too hot, like my wife. Okay so, i've actually eaten at the melt location in Avondale many times, and I was unaware that they have recently opened a new location in Hoover so I decided to stop by since melt is one of my favorite spots to grab a quick lunch, especially when I'm in the mood for a sandwich. So far i've had the chicken pesto, the buffalo chicken sandwich, the flying hawaiian, and the cheeseburger. I always get fries as my side, i truly believe they have the best fries!! The staff at the Hoover location is very nice and curteous, everyone is always smiling. It did not take long for my food to come out! On this occasion I decided to try out the pesto chicken sandwich (I love pesto) and it was absolutely delicious. I think it is my new favorite! I went with the three amigos - $13 ham, sliced chorizo, over easy egg, monterey & habañero jack cheeses on sourdough (no egg) other wise this was sandwich perfection. Really to the point that Joey might replace his favorite meatball sandwich on Friends. The sandwich is huge! Make no mistake it's a meal and if it wasn't so good, probably could have been two meals. The fries were really good as well, but so outdone by the sandwich they don't get proper recognition. I did add a side of the jalapeno ranch to dip my fries in, solid replacement for that red stuff so many of you like to dip your fries in. The place is clean and is kept up well. I did not see one piece of trash on the floor. The menu offers plenty of options, however those options are pricey. I went with a flying hawaiian, which is a turkey and pineapple sandwich on a pretzel bun. It is covered in oil. It seemed really heavy. I had a side of kettle chips. Other options for sides are available but add on to the price of your meal. I have to admit, I was not able to finish this sandwich due to the oily covering. I might give them another try.
