Friendly staff member greeted me when I walked into the shop. I didn't get her name but she said she works the weekends. Very friendly, polite and represents the business well. I purchased a couple pecan milk chocolate caramel turtles and two pieces of dark chocolate toffee bark. I spent $16; seemed spendy but I enjoyed the bark. The turtles are for a friend. Didn't seem to be a big selection but I found what I needed. The only thing I didn't see was saltwater taffy but I can't recall nor did I ask if the shop sells this. Theses chocolates are all beautiful. But they all taste weird. There's an odd artificial fruity like taste to them. They're way too sweet. The peanut butter doesn't taste very much like peanut butter at all. I will not be back. I'd give a one, but they're pretty, so it's a two. read more

Very disappointed with this chocolate shop. For the price we paid it was NOT worth it. The peanut butter truffle tasted like cheap Easter candy with a terrible aftertaste. The raspberry chocolate was overly sweet and had a weird texture. The lady working the counter struggled to count our chocolates out and kept touching them with her bare hand (that should have been my sign to pass). If I could get my money back I would. I couldn't resist checking out the mendocino chocolate company while in downtown fort bragg. Diverse offerings on display including fresh fudge in flavors like rocky road, and individually packed chocolates shaped like cars, whales, and seashells. We got ourselves a customized box, selecting various truffles and chocolates like bonjour mint, pacific fire (cayenne pepper), peanut clusters, lemon chiffon, and the mendocino macho (dark chocolate truffle). Mendocino Chocolate Shop is a cute local chocolate shop in the heart of downtown Fort Bragg. They had free parking right out front for up to three hours, and I wanted to walk around downtown, so I decided to start here. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a young woman. She asked if I'd ever been in before, and gave me a little tour of the shop. On the right side of the store were gifts and boxes of chocolate. The center area was filled with fun shaped chocolate lollipops and desserts, while the left was chocolate truffles. Sound familiar? It was laid out in a very similar fashion to a certain popular chocolate shop that can be found in most malls. That being said, their gifts and creations were very cute and original. My favorite were the whale shaped truffles, which the clerk said are very popular with children. As for the truffles behind the case, the small truffles were about two dollars each, while the large were about three. As a fan of dark chocolate, I loved their selection. It seemed like most of the truffles came in either milk or dark. (Milk chocolate is just dark chocolate that has been ruined by adding too much milk and sugar.) I ordered (all dark) a salt caramel, a spicy cayenne mousse, an orange mousse, and a dark chocolate mousse. This was decidedly better quality chocolate than anything you could find in a box in a drug store. The mousse tasted fresh, as if it had been made within the past few days. They were all pretty good, but not my favorite new chocolate in the world. My favorite flavor was the orange. My least favorite was the cayenne, which tasted like maybe it had been flavored with powder instead of fresh chilis. Overall, I definitely liked Mendocino Chocolate Company better than the local chocolate shop in Folsom, and almost as much as my favorite chocolate shop in the mall, but not as much as my favorite boutique artisan shop in Sacramento. I would probably come back again once in a while if I lived nearby. read more

I am a sucker for chocolate, so I couldn't pass up the chance to check this place out. Now I am torn: I am so glad I found it, but now what will I do without it?? I bought the kids a couple of white chocolate pops, my shark obsessed son wanted a shark, and my daughter wanted an alien. Honestly, I only bought them so they would leave me alone with my truffles. But, despite my concerns that they didn't like white chocolate, both kids loved their pops. But the truffles! Wow! I have never tasted anything like these! I bought mostly the fruit ones, since that is my favorite. The chocolate cherry, orange, and raspberry lace. On a whim, I decided to add a piña colada truffle just for fun. I don't typically care for white chocolate , but I was curious. Wow, I wish I had bought more. The filling in these truffles is so light and airy, it feels like it is whipped. The piña colada was incredible, and all of the fruit truffles I bought are amazing. I am obsessed with the texture of these! I don't live locally, but now I will be on a quest to find chocolates like this in other places! Definitely stop in and try these, they are so unique and so delicious! read more

While we were in the area for a short vacation, we walked this area to stretch our legs between destinations. I saw the sign for chocolate and knew I needed to check it out, so we parked on the street, maneuvered the traffic, and headed in. Once inside, we were hit with a veritable wall of sweet smells. We nosed around the store until we got to the truffle case, where we decided to get a couple pieces to try. The person helping us was not super friendly and didn't help us with some recommendations based on some restrictions we were hoping to abide. We paid for our chocolates which were pricey but we hoped they were worth it, as many good chocolates are. Once to the car, we opened our box and tried the first one. It was terrible! I was sad but undaunted because we had a couple others and chocked it up to a bad pick. Horribly enough, the were all terrible! All the chocolates tasted mildly like each other, and nothing like what they were claimed to be on their descriptions. We were really saddened by this experience, and unfortunately was not the only dismal food experience we had while visiting Mendocino. The best part of our experience here was that they were playing the Backstreet Boys on their sound system, but even their melodious crooning could not rescue this chocolate. I love the chocolate from this company. I have been buying it for years. But their service is far less great. I don't live nearby so I have to order the chocolate and have it shipped. They are very slow to process orders and even given plenty of notice, they just don't seem to get it done timely. They tell me I am a two day shipping point. I ordered my last order 8 days before Valentine's Day with only 1 request, get it here before the 14th. They assured me it would not be a problem. But it's not here and I am not happy. Not for me. We were so happy to find this place! The clerk suggested we get the truffles which are what they are know for. We picked out four different kinds two of each. We payed way to much for the truffles and we're so excited to try them when we left. To our disappointment they were not good. Not one of them. You could taste the artificial flavor in the nut truffles and the lemon truffle tasted like white chocolate dipped buttercream. We threw half of them away. read more

They make their own Oreos. How can you begrudge a chocolate shop that makes its own Oreos? The cookie part is actually dark chocolate, and the cream center is white chocolate. Sounds deadlier than the real thing, but where's the lard? I need my lard. No matter as there are plenty of options in this expansive store that happens to be in a building shared with a Bank of America branch. How convenient. You can go right from the Versateller and go hog wild with all the homemade specialty items they have here - raspberry bark, edible seashells, truffles up to your armpits, and of course, the Mendo Moose, a half-pound of chocolate that actually stares at you while you devour it. The ladies who package the goodies wouldn't win any speed contests, but rest assured your chocolates will be handled with loving care and bright bows. Just not good...super expensive for what they are and do not taste good at all. I can get better tasting chocolate from the grocery store. When I pay $56 for a box of truffles I expect them to be superior, rich and decadent and a high quality product made with high quality ingredients. That is not at all what we got. What we got were chocolates that definitely weren't freshly made. The chocolate used was very cheap quality...seriously tasted like candy melts from Michaels. And was full of artificial flavor taste. Really wish I had checked out reviews before visiting this place...I love getting chocolate from independent shops, I've never been burned so badly. Most chocolate shops will offer a sample...it's a way that they can reassure their customers of the product they hope you purchase. This place doesn't offer samples...and now I know why! If they did...very few people would buy them! I would say save your money for a different treasure. Along with poor quality chocolates...everything else was also way overpriced ($20 for a small hair clip?!?!?) and the service was AWFUL. So yeah...just a poor experience all around! read more

Pro: Great chocolate Con: Rude staff. My husband & I got there at 5:15pm (15 mins before closing time) tonight. The lady working there sighed in irritation and said "just letting you know, you only have 15 mi ns". We said ok and she went back to helping the people in front of us. Two more pairs of people tried coming in after us (around 5:20) and she pointed to the door and (with attitude) said "no, were closed!". Then it was our turn and I said "okay, I'd like this turtle and a bunch of stuff from the case". She said "You don't have time for a bunch of stuff, we're closing". I told her I would be quick. I rattled off my order in about 10 seconds and was waiting for her at the register with my card in hand. We were done and in our car at 5:28. She obviously wanted to get out of there AT 5:30. A friendly suggestion to the owner, make your employees quitting time 15-30 mins after the store closes. She clearly pushed away two paying customers before the store closed, and irritated us so much that we'll never be back.....all so she could get out of there AT 5:30. She's costing you business! I read many good things about this chocolatier prior to arriving at the north coast. With so many great reviews, suggestions and delicious confectionary options, I was compelled to go. The location itself is nothing to speak of, in fact we drove right past it because of where it is location. Yes, it's on the main drag through town but it's in the Bank of America. I almost thought I was in the Twilight Zone. Why on earth would a chocolatier be in a bank. Worse still, what kind of chocolatier is it that smells like an old bank and not of chocolate. My bad for being taken a back but you could blind fold someone with a sinus infection and they would be able to tell they were in any other chocolatier I have ever been too. Just saying. Now on to the chocolate. Chocolate done this way by hand and in small batches is becoming more and more rare in the world we live in. Yes, it is far more expensive to buy hand made chocolates but you can taste the difference. The brown creamy sex that melts on your tongue is worth every last penny. Thankfully it only smells like bank and doesn't taste like one too. Okay, okay, enough with the fact that they are inside a Bank of America. They are an extremely cute shop and they make great product. The next time I pass through this area, I will definitely make a stop again for a hand crafted truffle or my personal favorite the Mendocino Toffee. read more

Went today excited to get chocolate and the selection was horrible, almost bare shelves, what we could find was crazy over priced and we are from the Bay Area so that is saying a lot! 40$ for twelve pieces-not truffles, just chocolate even! $15 for a very very small piece of chocolate bark! I thought it was a misprint but all of them were priced this way. Little dissappointed at not been able to try the fudge. The salted caramel was calling my name. When I noticed they had samples for tasting... Ah, then I noticed the large fly on top of it. My husband thought it was fake because it was so large. It was real, it flew away. It would have been ok if it was the samples, but the counter where the fudge is place is open in the back. I hate flies. We let the girl attending us know and she looked a little lost, so I decided to go try the non fly edibles. In the sugar-free chocolate department, the mint truffles were yummy. I'll pass on the ones with peanut butter filling, though. Mr. B got milk chocolate with almonds. He did not share. Pout. You can select individual pieces of filled chocolates, truffles, as well as pre-packaged chocolates and candies. They also sell fudge in 1/4, 1/2 and full pound sizes. I purchased a peanut butter filled chocolate, a caramel filled chocolate, and a raspberry truffle. All were very good. Price point seemed a bit high for the product. I realize that Fort Bragg is a tourist town, but even for a tourist community, the price didn't match up to the quality of the chocolates. I won't mention them by name here, but there is a company with headquarters in South San Francisco that has been producing some of the best chocolate for over 100 years. I have sampled chocolates from many countries and that South San Francisco company remains my favorite of them all. Still, a very nice place to stop if you are in need of a chocolate fix. read more

I went in to buy some toffee with two coworkers. I waited patiently while the attendant helped another customer. Before I had a chance to ask a question two more employees came out of the back and they started talking. I waited 5 minutes and the lady finally decided to ask if she could help me. She didn't have any toffee on the floor, so she told me she was going to check the system. My friend sent me some 2 bags of magnificent dark chocolate covered salted cashews and two jars of hot fudge, one plain and one raspberry, for my birthday. There is nothing better than hot fudge on vegan vanilla ice cream topped with walnuts! Certainly my childhood go-to. When I opened the box I noticed there was a slight problem with the order. I called and spoke with Diane about it. Before I could even finish my sentence, she said she was going to send me a replacement product. I was so impressed with the customer care. As promised, it arrived a couple of days later which resulted in an instant smile from me. Not only is the customer care superior, so are the products! I know, hot fudge is not a beverage. Well this place is a bust!! We saw the website hours listed opening at 10am. Showed up to visit at 10:45am to see they were closed. We entered the building and were advised that they were not open until 11am so we returned to our car with two young children to wait the additional 15 minutes. We once again entered the store at 11:05am to be told that they still were not open for business. I asked the employee "when do you think you will open today" the response was even better. He replied "when another employee gets here". Well that sounded pretty ridiculous so we left. It's a pretty bad sign when you can't even open the doors on time so you turn customers away. We will buy our chocolate somewhere else. Won't be returning, I can catch bad service and a bad attitude somewhere else. Thanks read more
