Honest opinion. Was excited for a super burrito al pastor but got mainly rice, beans and terribly unseasoned meat. Came with mouthful of onions and warm tomatoes. It was not good by any means very disappointed because I was excited to enjoy this meal all to myself yet left to regret a waste of $16. Only thing good was the salsa. read more

Came in to Mendoza's Taqueria and service was just ok. No greeting and we were walked over to our table. Red flag, restaurant was pretty much empty and ambiance was like the sound of crickets. Came in for the enchiladas michuacanas because I had been craving them. Placed my order for drinks and food, then waited. DRINKS Jarrito orange flavored, always good Horchata was a generous size but too sweet for my liking so added some water. FOOD Enchiladas and fried chicken. Enchiladas were ok needed seasoning and some heat, spice. Fried chicken was dry and bland. The entrée was really lacking in seasoning and flavor. Enchiladas and cecina, dry meat. Again, enchiladas were just ok they really lacked seasoning and flavor. Cecina was ok. Ordered some ochepos, corn tamales, only because customers kept coming in and ordering in large quantities. I thought oh they must be good. Ordered 4 to go and I was excited to try them. Boy was I disappointed, they were very doughy and dry, not what I expected. I prefer a fluffy and moist ochepo. Love this place. Very authentic and delicious food. Food tradicional from Apatzingan, Michoacán. I live there huchepos (corn Tamales) and the morisqueta too. We went on a Wednesday afternoon and it was pretty empty and quiet, our food came out quick. We came in on a Sunday morning about 9:30am, the way it works is to grab any table (indoor or outdoor) and they will bring a menu to you. My coworker recommended I check out this specific location, as they specialize in the Molcajetes. We ordered the Molka Vallarta which can feed 2. It comes with FRESH HOMEMADE TORTILLAS and the stone pot contained Big/Small Shrimps, Fish, Mussels, Baby Scallops, Octopus. I definitely recommend y'all try their stone dishes, it takes a while to make but it's worth the wait. read more

First time visiting Mendoza's & on a very busy holiday weekend (Vday/President'a Day). When we arrived to their very busy parking lot we took the last spot in the corner. The section with the heaters was full but luckily we only waited about five minutes for a table to clear. We were seated and approached by our waiter very shortly afterward. It took about 10 minutes to get our Chavelas and our food about 15 minutes afterward (ordered all together). The drinks were made well! Chilled and lots of flavor My husband loved his enchiladas and tacos. I felt my flautas were a little under seasoned but their house red salsa made the flavor even better. I would give this place 0 starts there food isn't so great and there restrooms are disgusting. My daughter had to poop herself because the restroom was so dirty and it was an emergency. If you want authentic food from Michoacán, Mexico; this is the place to go. My family and I are from Michoacán and we are very selective/ particular about certain plates. The enchiladas Michoacánas are a staple in our home state, we take great pride in our enchiladas. Mendozas gets a 4/5, just because my mother gets the 5/5, lol. Another great dish we love here is the huchepos, its a sweet corn (like tamal) that is topped with salsa verde and if you wish sour cream and quezo. Its heaven on earth. Really simple, yet very mouthwatering. My husband, usually gets everything, apporiadillo, tostadas, ceviche, caldos, flautas, sopes, molcajetes, exc... the list goes on. One thing is for sure TORTILLAS are hand made on the spot!!! So in conclusion, in the 6+ years we've been coming here we've always enjoyed the environment, the employees are very attentive and the food is delish. If ever in San Jose give them a try. When it come to paying she (manager)accused the table by saying it could of been one of the girls hairs that was at our table ! If you want real Mexican food, go where ALL the Mexicans go. And it can't get any more Mexican than this neighborhood. I did a search on Yelp and came across this one -- how did I judge whether this one is worthy of trying? Their menu items and pictures posted by users. If my (Mexican) husband started to drool from the pics I showed him, it's a good sign. We decided to give a try. Upon arrival, I was relieved to find dedicated parking lot behind the restaurant although it's a bit confusing that some parts of the parking lot were for the Vietnamese place next door. You know you had come to an authentic Mexican place when you find all sorts of street vendors parked outside the joint, selling colorful toys, pirated DVDs, flowers, etc. And they come into the restaurant to get into your faces to sell -- that's off-putting to me but you get used to it... Going into the restaurant, found out that it's actually quite big. The menu was overwhelmingly huge. There were pictures for many items so they helped a bit. Not even my Mexican husband knows everything on the menu. Our first visit, hubby ordered Chile Verde and Michelada -- he enjoyed both very much. The Chile Verde was too acidic for my taste but it's perfect for him. I opted for Caldo de Pollo (Chicken Stew/Soup). It came with big chunks of veggie (carrots, squash, etc), a side of Spanish rice and garnishes of chopped onions, fresh jalapenos and cilantro. My chicken soup was heavenly -- I'm used to eating chicken soup cooked with whole chicken so it didn't bother me when the soup had 2 pieces of chickens with bones. The flavor was genuine and veggie chunks were fresh. This type of restaurants don't get enough reviews and credits for what they are (the goodness) because majority of their clienteles are blue-collar laborers who aren't necessarily Yelp-savvy. Killer Michoacan food -- yelpers who know their Mexican food are right about this great place! We had a chicken/beef/chorizo molcajete, huarache no carne, chavindeca, potato flautas and a goat and adobado pork taco. Currently, the molcajetes are discounted tuesday through thursday. The word 'molcajete' means mexican morter/pestle, but it's typically a mixed grill of meats and some veggies (nopales is common) or sometimes a stew. Mendoza does the grilled version and it's served in a molcajete. (for comparison, Albertos on Park in SJ does the stew version). This is a huge dish and comes with great homemade tortillas. Ours had chicken, beef, chorizo (fantastic chorizo!), fried cheese, nopales, large grilled green onion bulb and peppers. A really great dish to share with friends -- don't forget the added salsas, fresh onions and cilantro, and limes they serve liberally as condiments here. The Huarache no carne (can also be ordered with meat), as it's name implies, this is a thick tortilla (between a regular tortilla and a sope in thickness) that is oblong, in the shape of a sandal sole. Ours was topped with refried beans (which had great flavor and was a mix of fully mashed and more whole beans) and queso fresco. Went great with the molcajete meat, too. The birria taco (goat) had liberal meat and was decent. We found the adobado pork a bit dry -- but it had a nice flavor. What's great about Mendoza is they use the same great homemade tortillas for the tacos as well as the plate dishes (some restaurants cheap-out and go with commercial ones for the simple tacos). The chavindeca is a like a quesadilla with meat: It's meat and cheese sandwiched between two tortillas and cut in pie wedges. Excellently caramelized meat and cheese -- just perfect. Although we had way too much food, my dining partner really wanted to try the potato flautas (since he has fond memories of them in Mexico City) and the waitress offered to do a half order, so we had them as well. We got 3 well-fried and still-crispy flautas stuffed with potatoes. Some places cover these with sauce and they sit too long and get soft -- although there was cabbage mix on top, these were still crispy when we got them. The place can be noisy and not conducive to discussion when it's full up or the mariachi bands are roaming. But off hours is quiet and inviting. We'll be back for sure. We want to catch the fresh corn tamales (uchepos) -- they were out when we visited. read more

Amazing taqueria that serves delicious, fresh, Michoacan food in the heart of East San Jose. Whenever my husband and I go to a Mexican restaurant anywhere, this is the gold standard for us--all places, especially places that give the impression that they are authentic taquerias--get compared to Mendoza's. Along with another a la carte item I usually order at least one taco. Their tacos allow the fresh, corn tortilla and juicy meat to shine, with minimal condiments (they do have fresh cilantro and chopped onion at the tables, though years ago I also thought they used to put sour cream and/or a little queso fresco but not anymore). This past visit they did not have carnitas, which dashed my dreams of having an amazing porktastic taco =*( The chavindeca and gordita are also so delicious, in part, I think, because they are so simple. Meat can be a touch too dry, including the adobado this last trip, but still full of flavor. My husband usually orders a huge burrito, and the one bite that he allots for me is an amazing, juicy combination of flavors and textures, with meat, cheese, sour cream, avocado, and rice. Another thing I enjoyed is the horchata which is extremely difficult to find in the Kansas City area, which is where I live now. I like my horchata a little sweeter and with more cinnamon, but perhaps that's not the authentic way of making it. Great, authentic taqueria with great, authentic food.
