    Tonkotsu Ramen
    Jose G.

We have gone to this Menkoi location at the Sandhills since it opened over the past few years and it has been consistent and delicious. I enjoy spicy so I always go for the Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen with a side of extra pork. I also enjoy the fried beef Gyosa that they serve. My wife gets the regular Tonkotsu Ramen and asks for spice on the side so she can add how much spice she wants to her bowl. The pork is always fresh as well as the bean sprouts, the seaweed, egg, noodles, and fish cake. The service is always friendly. Once you order you may pick your seat and they bring the food out to you and pick up your dishes after your meal. The restaurant has always been clean and inviting with some Anime artwork on the walls. I will continue to visit this location for a great ramen bowl! Friends have encouraged me to try different dishes because they say everything is great, so I'll have to check out more menu items.

Food is good. The portion sizes are pretty big so you won't leave hungry. On our last visit we got take out; you can see the size of container in photo. There is a TV in the restaurant with anime TV shows playing. The employees were very helpful explaining the menu.

I get why Menkoi gets really packed. The The food is both good and comforting and the atmosphere, while nothing fancy, is relaxing - all making for a good experience. Regarding the food, while you can get more variety of ramen at some other spots you can't beat the price and the simplicity of Menkoi's menu. You can also just get broth if you like, which is a fantastic option. The rice balls are also simple, but good. I wish they had more vegetarian options, but what they have is passable. I don't like the prices of the add-ons (like an egg (actually, half-egg), seaweed,.etc) as they're not worth the price, but I'm glad they're available. Also wish they had chili sauce. The service every time I've gone has also usually been good. Slight complaints aside, for the price especially, Menkoi is the ramen spot.

Stopped by the Sandhills location yesterday to get Ramen and it was just as delicious as the downtown location. It is located across from Champs and And Chicken. And yes, that's the name of the other restaurant. There were a few people in line but it moved quite fast. I ordered two vegetable ramen and they were piping hot. So hot as to when I got home (because I'm close by) they were still piping hot! Just how I like it! Delicious! Staff was great and the quality was immaculate. The new location is great and I think a great addition to the NE side!

I was craving ramen soup and saw a build board advertising this Restaurant. I was slightly overwhelm with what to get because this is my first time here and I think a picture menu would be a great idea for people stepping out of their norm to try something different. But the chicken ramen did not disappoint. It had seaweed and a fish egg in there. Full of flavor and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Their operating hours are a bit weird so don't just pop up, make sure they are open first. Customer service was polite and professional.

Chicken ramen was very salty and lukewarm. The egg was not even cooked all the way. The location on Gervais street has better food, although the Sandhill location has more seating.

This restaurant is staff with the nicest and friendliest people. They are also Service Dog friendly. I come to this place often because of their consistency to pump out good ramen.

First taste is clear that corn starch is dominant. But taste is consistent. The curry is there but something seems to be missing. Now, maybe my first meal should have been noodles at a Ramen House but to my thinking, nothing on the menu should suffer. It's not a bad dish. There no real bite at the end of your palate and it's not hot by season or temperature but pleasant. It comes with a scoop of soft rice but the stew does have potatoes and onions in it. The beef is tender and tasty but it's flavor comes from on the soup and not distinguishing. Carrot's are present but few. Again, way too much rice. The restaurant is small clean but the cashier, buss girl and waitress was the same person. Clearly suffering from a lack of customer service training you could see she was not happy to be here. I popped a $2 tip anyway. The kitchen is open and you can see the bowls being prepared. It almost compares to a mom and pop fast food joint. (See pics below). Overall: Scale from one to Ten food was decent. Food: 6+ House: 8 Service: 5 * Food is overall taste, temperature & presentation. * House: Is cleanliness, decor and comfort * Service: timely delivery, server attentiveness and attitude. This location is in Sandhills location of SC. I'll have to return for the soup and noodles but the night before I had egg drop noodle soup from Chen's. I was a little soup shy! You know I think I could make a living doing this. I'm fair and objective! Bishop's Food Corner critique! Or something like that. Thanks for watching. Ask questions. What's crazy is "I'm still Hungry "!

It's nice to have a Menkoi on this side of town. It's very clean inside. I tried a Lychee drink which was really good. I got the spicy chicken ramen. I forgot to add spinach like I normally do but it was good nonetheless. I will be back.

My daughter loves the cheap ramen that you can get from the grocery store so for her birthday we decided to try authentic ramen. When we walked in we were surprised with the set-up. You order your ramen as soon as you enter, they give you a number if you are eating in, and then you pick where you want to sit. The dining area and kitchen are open so you can watch the food being prepared. I got the shoyu ramen which is a soy based broth, my daughter got the miso ramen, and my husband got the cha shu ramen which is just shoyu with double meat. It ended up being a lot of ramen so we all took leftovers home. The menu isn't large, but they do offer a variety of flavors and options. We do plan on going back soon.

One thing that immediately stood out to me is they are called Hokkaido raamen, but dont have Hokkaido raamen (Hokkaido raamen tends to be buttery with seafood.. but there are many variations). The pros: very friendly staff that didnt charge me extra for a sprinkle of cilantro. Clean place and well presented food. The cons: noodles are way too soggy. Good raamen needs to be much firmer. The chashu (por) for the price of the dish should have been the size of my fist, but was more the size of a couple thin slices of Canadian bacon. The temperature was also luke warm. Ramen needs to be hot hot hot (forgivable though because I imagine a lawsuit if it b was served as its supposed to be) Overall: way too over priced for what it is. I would say this is a $7 bowl of raamen. Don't get me wrong... it was tasty... but heavily price gouged. Alas.. this is kind of par for course for raamen stateside. I might go here once or twice a year... its like having a fast food burger that costs 20$.. the burger may be great but the price drains the flavor.

I have mixed feelings…read more I ordered a ramen soup with pork. It tasted 'ok'. Not the worst I've had, not the best. I was happy to try it though. What I didn't really like was their policy of charging money for tap water. You don't expect this in America. I went to their soda machine to get some water, thinking there would be some cheap $0.01 plastic cups, and that's when I saw a sign saying you have to pay for water. NOT what I expected after ordering and paying for a ramen soup. I asked if there was any way to get a free cup of water, thinking maybe they kept the cups behind the counter, and they said no, you have to buy a cup for the tap water. In my mind, if you have to nickle and dime us $0.50 for tap water, you're doing things wrong as a business. Charge what you have to so people don't have to ask about paying money for tap water and you don't have to put up stupid signs saying you have to pay for water. I mean, come on. That looks SO PETTY and CHEAP! This place was so low life, they even had signs saying don't sit down until you order something taped on the walls all around the restaurant. That really made it look cheap. Where am I, China? Pakistan? Didn't feel like Japan... and certainly didn't feel like America. I didn't try to use the restroom. I don't know if they charge a fee for that... or the toilet paper... I think we as a society need to strongly push back against this type of 'fee' trend in restaurants. Yea, it's their business and they can run it the way they want, but I can also give a poor review and not come back. Your choice. I would of tipped the worker $3-4 based on service. Instead I was charged $0.50 and won't come back.
