One star for beautiful ambiance, but everything else fell short
We were really looking forward to dining here, especially after seeing it was Michelin recommended, but unfortunately our experience didn't live up to that expectation.
Ambiance:
The courtyard decor is truly beautiful with warm lights strung through the trees, festive bench seating around wood tables, and even a live saxophone player that added a great vibe. Once we were finally seated in the courtyard, it felt fun, lively, and inviting. However, that's not where our evening began. When we arrived, they couldn't find our reservation. We later learned the person handling reservations on their website is actually based in Mexico City, which led to the mix-up. Thankfully, they were able to accommodate our party of 9, but we were placed in the back near a dirt road, along the walkway to the bathrooms. It definitely dampened the mood. They did move us to the courtyard about an hour later.
Service:
The host was polite once we showed him the reservation proof, but overall the service felt inconsistent. Our waiter was nice, but not particularly friendly or engaging.
A few examples:
- Our group thought the special Thanksgiving dinner came with a wine pairing, but it turned out he meant the dish came with a wine sauce.
- When we asked for additional drinks, he told us to "hold on," which was off putting.
- After being moved to the courtyard, they asked us to sit according to where the utensils (like steak knives for the filet) were already placed but people (understandably) wanted to sit next to certain family members.
- We weren't given napkins after the move and had to ask for them.
- When ordering dessert, we weren't told ahead of time the lava cake would take 15-20 min and by then, we did not want to wait around anymore. This should've been brought up when we ordered our initial meal so we could gauge timing
Food:
Given the Michelin recommendation, we were genuinely surprised by the food. Supposed to be "elevated," but it just felt like they were trying too hard without the flavor to back it up.
Drinks: Mojitos were delicious. They were light, refreshing, and honestly one of the highlights of the night.
Guacamole: Tasted like pre-made lunchbox guac (smooth with no chunky avocado freshness). Plating was nice with pork rinds and panela, but the chips were burnt tostada pieces.
Corn: Okay, but forgettable.
Rib Tacos: The best of the dishes (flavorful and juicy).
Pesca Santa (fish): My first bite tasted overly fishy (was it really the catch of the day?). The dish overall was bland and needed salt and acid. The goat cheese "tortilla soup reduction" wasn't noticeable at all.
Filet Mignon: Fine, but nothing memorable.
Thanksgiving tasting menu: A miss all around. Bruschetta was soft instead of crisp. Turkey was a bit dry and served with a sweet-tinted gravy. Dessert ("Mexican candy") didn't taste like Mexican candy and was more of a mashed-together blend of flavors that didn't complement each other.
Cornbread dessert: More like soggy bread with a horchata sauce that lacked flavor.
Nothing was terrible, but for a Michelin recommended restaurant, the service lacked warmth, clarity, and attention to detail. The price was surprisingly reasonable (about $500 USD for a party of nine with drinks). But the food and service didn't come close to Michelin standards. Based on our experience, we wouldn't recommend this restaurant. Cabo has many other spots that delivered far better meals, service, and overall dining experiences. read more
