Metro 8 is a very well priced steak house right in downtown Durham. The service is excellent and our water was never empty. The atmosphere is classy and waiters are extremely friendly. I would recommend the steak as they have several delicious options. The special chocolate souffle is fresh made and well worth it. I am sadly rating this lovely, quaint, restaurant soo low. I've visited twice. The food was excellent and service was nice. The atmosphere quiet, cozy, and quaint. Unfortunately, the owner left me with such a negative feeling because of how he handled a small and challenging incident that he made into a big incident. Here is a summary... My girlfriend and I sat at the bar, again our second visit. We had two cosmos's, stuffed shrimp appetizer, and shared a filet. The meal and service was friendly and nice. We were very happy with the intention to also purchase a gift certificate before leaving. We asked to pay the tab, the server attempted to close out the bill. Unfortunately, to no fault of the establishment, the WiFi was down. 15 minutes passed before she communicated this to us. In the meantime, I called a Lyft ride, driver was close by. The server finally communicated the issue and I too explained the lyft driver would be arriving soon. She continued to attempt to problem solve, trying to call the credit card in, on hold waiting. She was sincerely apologizing, I was totally understanding and by all means assured her that the world of tech can be frustrating when least excepted and go down, but that my lyft driver awaited. I offered to show my license and address and to return the next day to resubmit card or pay in cash. I even walked outside and asked the driver to wait, explaining the situation. Luckily she was willing to wait, most would charge you and leave. By this time it had been 30 minutes we were waiting. The server asked the owner could we return the next day as I had asked, he denied my request twice. He simply did not trust his customer!!! How sad!!! Especially, when I was patient, understanding, but mostly kind. Finally after 35 minutes or so, the server talked to a human and confirmed payment. Keep in mind, by this time they were now explaining to all the customers about this unfortunate inconvenience of the WiFi being down and they would need to start running all tabs by phone and it would be a loooong wait to pay. I will not return because the owner did not seem to care that I could have missed my ride, but more importantly did not trust I would return the next day to pay. He was more concerned about his $86 than about kindness to customers and putting the customer first instead of himself first. In hide sight, I hope now he has learned to have a back up old credit card swipe machine when WiFi fails again....because it will. Trust and kindness goes a looong way!! And should be reciprocated from owners to the customers. It's a two way street. Building friendships with your customers!!! I live a mile away and would have returned often if I had been trusted like a friend. I know his establishment will continue on and do well. I wish him well, but mostly, I wish for him to open his heart and learn to balance friendship and trust with business. read more

There was a long dark hair in my dessert. When I told the waiter, he said the dessert was not made on site (I'm not sure how this is relevant nor did this make me feel any better). The person who I assume was the manager on duty said she could not comp my meal because it is restaurant week and the meal was already "greatly discounted." She offered me a free dessert which I had zero interest in, given what occurred. One of the wonderful things about restaurant week is that it allows customers to try new places with the hope of gaining new customers. Mistakes happen but unfortunately the way in which the manager handled this incident was far from classy and thus Metro 8 has lost my family as a customer. read more

I personally signed up for Yelp to thank Metro 8 for their wonderful service. I took my sister and now brother-in-law out to dinner to Metro 8 when I was visiting town two weekends ago. The dinner was to celebrate their engagement, as I had drove 90 minutes for the occassion I was expecting a great dining experience, and it lived up to the hype. The restaurant is beautifully laid out. The color scheme is very soft and enjoyable, with the seating being well-spaced out; not cramped or feeling empty either way. The server was extremely knowlegable and polite. Had a great selection of mixed drinks as well as wine. My sister got the salmon, which she enjoyed very much, but the men got the Filet Mignon Au Poivre. One of the best steaks I've ever had. Peppercorn sauce was great, not too thick or too thin. Before the meal we ordered the empenadas (which were amazing) and enjoyed the bread basket that came with a delightfully tasteful and enjoyable avocado-cream cheese spread. Was totally blown away by the taste and complimented the meal well. Desert was just as solid, enjoyed the Dulce De Leche crepe, another suggestion by the waitress. My advice? Ask the staff what to get. They are friendly, informative, and give you a very honest and clear opinion on what to get, based off your taste preference. The price? It's not a cheap meal, but it's worth every penny. I don't have the budget to go here more than once a month, but next time I'm in town, we'll return. It's a great restaurant for the 4star or 5star budget. Additionally, you get alot of food for the price. Trust me, this is not the type of restaurant where you get a steak the size of your thumb for $50. The one thing I would do different? Return during the summer so I could sit outside! Our second visit to Metro 8 was less impressive than the first. First, let me say the Metro 8 has service down; it is on point. Our waitperson was top notch and there were various others who stopped by to fill water glasses, bring bread, bring food, and just check on us. The ambiance is nice and the music is always relaxing and retro. I give them 5 stars on service and atmosphere. The prices are expensive and I am not convinced the food is worth what they are charging. My $8.50 glass of wine was in a large wine glass, but was only filled 1/5 of the way. It looked like quite a sad glass of wine and I could not bring myself to order another because, well, by volume, that wine was priced at over $1.00 per tablespoon. It was a red blend, nice, but nothing over the top. The churrasco skirt steak is what they are known for and last time it trumped the cowboy ribeye in taste, but this time, while it still tasted delicious, the steak was chewy and sinewy. It was not the same quality as it was last fall, and $25 is a steep price for a piece of meat with one side. The sweet potato fries were average, at best. The spinach alfredo was "meh" and also a small portion. The sides are definitely not worth the price. The appetizers were yummy, but pricey as well. Caprese salad [with 3 tomato slices and 3 mozzarella slices] was $10 and Provoleta in a little dish was 8. Both quiet tasty, and frankly, the best part of the meal, though. Here is how the food breaks down: Churrasco 2.5 wine 2 spinach 1 caprese 4 provoleta 3.5 sw. potato fries 2.5 Overall, a nice and relaxing meal, but the prices and the portions make it a place I don't want to visit very often. read more

Went here with a group of 13 friends for a Saturday night out, and it was really a pleasant surprise for us all. The restaurant is very nicely appointed, the owners and staff are very friendly and take care to keep the customer happy. The layout and decor reminded me of big city restaurants in NYC or Chicago, a total departure from what you anticipate as you walk or drive past. As an added nicety, they called before we arrived to ask if we preferred to dine on the patio or inside; it's really nice to have a choice up front. They had a good menu, and among the group, we tried lots of things. Everyone was happy...we were doubly glad that we opted to eat inside, rather than on the patio, as there were major downpours during dinnertime. Although busy, you could easily have a conversation around the table, and the service was efficient. I had the empanadas, which were outstanding, with the Churrasco and a dolce de leche crepe (read "death by caramel") that was terrific. Good wines rounded out the evening. I had walked past this place a million times without giving it a second glance. The location may work against its favor because I consider 9th street full of college hangouts, and generally avoid most of the restaurants there (except Dain's when I crave a burger and/or beer). My former boss wanted to take me out for a goodbye dinner and chose Metro 8, one of her favorite restaurants. I was game to try someplace new. Upon arrival...well, the arrival was complicated by my trouble finding it, even though I was pretty familiar with 9th street. The exterior can be difficult to see after sundown with its dark colors and unlit restaurant name sign. Once I found it and entered, though, I was struck by the lovely and elegant interior. Lots of white and cream and beige, definitely more upscale than I would have predicted for a 9th street restaurant. It's perfect for a romantic night out, especially for us chicks. You'll look fantastic in the Oprah Winfrey Show-ish soft warm glowy lighting. I joined the dinner party and our server was fantastic: knowledgeable, courteous, attentive. She enthusiastically offered her recommendations. Although this place is renowned for its Argentinian style steaks, there is a wide variety of dishes. The appetizers include crab-stuffed shrimp, empanadas, chorizo, and caprese. The mains include several steak and chop choices, as well as fish, poultry, and pasta choices. We ordered a wonderful, spicy red wine which put all of us in a fantastic mood. I began with the house salad with balsamic vinaigrette, followed by the half portion (8 oz) churrasco skirt steak. I really liked that we could choose which side dish to accompany the main dish; I went with the sauteed broccolini (the side choices also included baked potato, french fries, sweet potato fries, spinach alfredo, and sauteed asparagus). The entire group decided to share an order of sweet potato fries. The salad was huge and fresh and pleasant, the vinaigrette perfect. The steak was marvelous. Unless you have a monstrous appetite, the 1/2 portion (8oz as opposed to the full 16 oz) is plenty. Cooked perfectly medium rare (as requested), tender, juicy, rich with flavor, it virtually melted in my mouth. I nearly sighed with every delicious bite. It came with a sauce that I occasionally dipped some pieces of steak into, but the steak was delicious without it. The broccolini was succulent and perfectly cooked. I was very impressed with the sweet potato fries, which were crispy on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside--perfect. I've had so many crappy versions of sweet potato fries since returning to NC, and have longed for the incredible sweet potato fries I used to devour at Puckett's Grocery in Nashville, TN. Finally, I've found sweet potato fries which rival Puckett's at Metro 8. We finished our meal with a fantastic molten chocolate cake. My ex-boss enjoyed it so much she took several more home for her kids. I was extremely impressed with my meal at Metro 8, one of the best dining experiences I've had in the Triangle by far. My dining companions and their sparkling, hilarious conversation certainly contributed to the warm fuzzies after I left, but much of the credit also goes to the food, wine, and staff at this establishment. I wanted to find a reason not to like this place... it was just one of those days... from the outside, it looks like a small whole in the wall, that couldn't possibly serve a good steak. But when you walk, the atmosphere is altogether different. The hardwood floors and old school decor give the restaurant and very classic look. I arrived a little less than an hour after it opened for the evening and I was instantly greeted by the server. The place was empty so she indicated that I could sit where ever I wanted - I'm a big fan of sitting at the bar. The bartender who took care of me was very cordial, and attentive. Having read previous reviews (quite frankly, this was the only reason I took the 25-minute drive) I already knew that I wanted the Churrasco (my all-time favorite cut) - I needed to decide for myself if their steak could live up to the hype. At the suggestion of the bartender, I went with the sweet potato fries for the side... and ordered the Chorizo as the appetizer. The Chorizo was excellent. And the sweet potato fries had the perfect combination of sweetness and crunch. But the real show stopper was the steak... The Churrasco was indeed everything everyone said it would be... definitely among the best tasting churrascos I've had. The cut itself is difficult to get wrong, it's naturally a very flavorful cut, but what really sealed the deal for me was their Chimichurri steak sauce which had an extra kick of spiciness and garlic, compared to what you normally get at Latin American restaurants. It really made the steak's flavors pop! The service and the meal really made my day (it had been a long and tedious one)... I already regret that I'm only here for the night and may never get a chance to taste that delicious steak and sauce combination again! The churrasco here is unbelievable, and so are the French fries (being European, this is important to me). The rest of the menu is good, but pales in comparison by the flavorful, tender churrasco. (Don't even think about ordering it more done than medium-rare! You would waste a perfect cut.) Tip: ask for your plate to be heated so you can enjoy it slowly without the meat getting cold. The outside looks cheesy -- glasses with fake wine on the patio, that kind of thing. But the interior is very nice. Never overly busy, but steady business, it seems. This girl is maybe 100 lbs and the bouncer threw her onto the sidewalk, resulting in bruises and scrapes galore. So the evening started off with my husband and I getting there prior to the party whose name the reservation was under. There was some confusion about whose name the reservation was under and for some reason the answer seemed to hinge on the number in our party. After some phone calls we determined the number in our party, as if this person's very unique name would not suffice to tell us that we did in fact have a reservation for a party of 8. We were told that our party had canceled due to "child care issues". This was not the case and the woman behind the bar was pretty confrontational about it. I am not certain why she made a big deal out of it because other than the geros who were wrapping up their meals as we were arriving, the place was nearly empty. We ended up sitting out on the patio which did not have an elegant vibe as these prices would suggest, but more of that of a beer garden. Don't get me wrong I love a good beer garden, but you've go to have the beer to go with it. Here is the beer selection, or something like it: Bud Light, Michelob, Corona, Bass and Stella - all in bottles. No local, tap choices at all. To give you an idea of this area I will describe - red painted deck, covered (some kind of metal?), lattice work and tarp siding. Also, when I'm sat outside, I like to know that I'm outside...not the case here. What's up with the tarps guys? Oh, and we sat in plastic banquet chairs, except for the baby in our party - he got a sweet high chair made of real wood! I ordered the lobster ravioli - it was horrible. It was certainly not fresh, and I am quite sure it was frozen. I ordered a house salad to fill me up because I could not eat more than one bit of my entree. The salad was just meh....yeah I know it's just a salad, but I've had some delicious salads in my day! Our bill total came to $108 for 2 people and I got back home and had to fix myself a snack. I think this is the best kept secret of Durham. If you look at the menu prices, portions, service and quality of the food, you cant help to give it anything other than five stars. Killer appetizers - empanadas, chorizo, to name a few. I had the chimichurri, flank steak, and it was awesome. I would advise ordering the large cut, it makes great leftovers if you can't finish it. This is supposed to be a cheap cut of meat, but it sells for a lot in the grocery stores. Metro 8 cooks this to perfection. Then when you consider how healthy the cut is - loads of protein and little fat, it is a winner. Then my friend and I polished our meals off with tres leches crepes, que rico. This is a cool place to bring a date because of the lighting and table layout. You are not sitting on top of other people. You won't be disappointed, or break the bank, and he/she will be impressed. read more

Four of us had dinner here tonight. When I called 3 hours ahead we got a reservation. On Saturday night! When we showed up they remembered me from the phone and we sat at one of the rare tables in the front of the restaurant. The staff was great, our server was perfect, and gave us just the right amount of space. Now to the food. I had the salmon and it was perfect. The glaze on top allowed the flavor of the salmon to shine. My wife had the tuna and the balsamic reduction was just right. Our guests had the new york and signature dish, churrasco. Again, everything was perfect. At that point we had to sample the deserts, we split a cheese cake and chocolate souffle. Again, perfect, and the coffee was full bodied, strong bistro coffee that cuts right through the desert. Without drinks we would have hovered at $117.00. That's extremely reasonable for four people at a high end joint. If you wonder if I know what I'm talking about, I was a chef for eight years, so I know how a restaurant runs. When I came to visit, my mission was to eat great North Carolina B-B-Q. I had that at the Q Shack on the first night but I didn't expect to have the great time and great food we had at Metro 8. I was recently lamenting that there were no good steak places in the Triangle (having lived in Chicago and Phoenix, and have traveled throughout Argentina, I've had quite a few wonderful steaks in my day). When he mentioned I try Metro 8, I was shocked that I had lived here 3 years and hadn't heard of this place. Two nights later, I tried it out. Excellent service, provoleta was a great starter, the filet (ordered medium rare, but the center was more on the rare side, which is how I like it) was outstanding. The dulce de leche was almost too rich (it wasn't). I had a bigger, far better steak here than I've had at Bin 54 or Angus Barn, and paid less. I have two knocks on the place. 1) It's a steakhouse with an Argentinian bent to it, but the South American wine selection is rather limited. 2) I wish the marketing were better, as I would have liked to have enjoyed this place sooner! read more

Mmm soo good... My wife and I went during restaurant week and we were not disappointed. First Course: Provoleta & Chorizo The provoleta is a great appetizer that consists of grilled provolone cheese with tomatoes on top sprinkled oregano. Very simple, very tasty. The Chorizo was flavorful, and stood own it's own just fine; however it came with a garlicky chimichuri sauce that was very similar to good mojo. Second Course: Herb Crusted Tuna & the 16oz Churrasco. HOLY COW! I know, Tuna at a steak place? In all honesty the best tuna I've had are from steak joints, they treat it like a steak and it always great. This one was no exception. I would recommend rare, as medium rare was a little more cooked than I care for. It had an amazing rosemary based herb crust, and as mentioned before, it's a crust not a dusting. The Churrasco was by far the best piece of flank/skirt steak I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Grilled to perfection (rare-med. rare), and still VERY juicy and flavorful. I have no idea what it was marinated in, but it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be angel tears of joy. Simply delicious! I used the left over bread to soak up all the amazing juices on the plate. WOW! Third Course: Chocolate Soufflé & Dulce de Leche Crepes. The souffle was great, but the crepes were really good. Very rich and chocolatey, a great way to finish the meal. The wait staff was very friendly, and the hostess (not sure if that is her title) was very nice and talkative. It definately made my wife and I feel like we were regulars. In Summary. Try the Chorizo and Churrasco. You'll be VERY HAPPY. Tip: Wednesday night they have 1/2 price bottles of wine. read more

Conflicted on how to review the restaurant.... The waitress was very kind and, with exception of continually forgetting to bring us rolls, she was quite attentive and helpful in the menu selection. The inside of the restaurant is charming and I would love to know more about its history and architecture. Outside is a little bit different - the restaurant is located in an area of 9th street that is not been revitalized and men living rough are on the sidewalk. Feel for them. Back to the restaurant - food was okay and the service was okay. I guess I just wasn't blown away. It's worth checking out and seeing for yourself. I decide to celebrate my 21st birthday at Metro 8. The food was amazing the vibe was amazing. Our waitress was kind and attentive even though it was extremely busy. Unfortunately one of my friends had hair in her food. She was promptly apologized to and given the menu to order again. We were all under the impression that her food would be complimentary due to the mishap but it was not. She had to pay for the meal replacing the meal that was inedible. Our poor waitress was so sweet especially to me and told me not to let it ruin my night. I was just hurt that I invited someone somewhere and that's how they were treated. This is our favorite restaurant in Durham. We went with a crowd of people who love Argentinean cuisine, plus a few picky eaters who don't eat red meat. The real test was my husband, who is Chilean and loves a good Argentinean churrasco. Everyone LOVED their meals. And the chicken caper was to die for. Usually you don't expect to have an amazing chicken dish at a steakhouse. My uncle, who goes to Buenos Aires every year was so impressed that he called the chef-owner out to give him his compliments. We then spoke with the owners, a husband-wife team from Argentina and Brazil. We then returned several times for events in their party space. Their appetizers were fabulous. Who knew that you could make hummus and pita triangles sing? Whenever we are homesick for South America, we're going here. read more

I wanted so badly to love everything about this place... but I have to judge a steakhouse by the steak and it was only "OK", thus the 3 stars. I had the NY Strip, and it was cooked perfectly, but there was simply no flavor. Had a wonderful $29 bottle of Argentinian Malbec that fought for highlight of the night with the dulce de leche crepe. That crepe blew my hair back - what a flavor. The Malbec simply did what it do :) The ambiance was wonderful, absolutely wonderful. I will probably go back to try their charasco steak, but the money I paid for this experience was not worth it for the flavors I walked away with. I will definitely try again. Best steak I ever had? Went to Metro 8 last Saturday night for the first time and found it to be a totally awesome place. My girlfriend had visited there on a food tour and loved it so we decided to dine there. Reservations were easy although it took a voicemail and return call to get it booked. The service and food at Metro 8 were 5-star but in a very casual and non-steakhouse-stuffy kind of way. I had the lamb chops and they were fantastically cooked and seasoned. The Empinadas rocked as a starter too. My only feedback is that it would be nice if they were on Opentable. Check it out. In all fairness I should probably give this place a 4 star review because although the food was very good, my spinach came out cold and the empanadas were a little too pungent with chili powder and the cheese appetizer had way too much dried oregano on it....but heck...the staff was so gracious and welcoming and the restaurant so quaint I just can't help myself. the restaurant itself is much smaller than I had thought. Gorgeous though, really a lovely place. the owner greeted and sat us, and checked on us throughout our meal. she was willing to help do anything which I really respect. I have been in the restaurant business for 20+ years, and it is so refreshing to see an owner pitching in to get the job done. we ordered both the flank steak and the NY Strip. Amazingly we felt the flank steak surpassed the Strip, truly a testament to the chef's culinary skills. the rolls and house made cream cheese with cilantro and jalapeno are delicious!! Oh, one suggestion. the dulce de leche crepes were so rich and delicious, but pairing them with some vanilla ice cream to cut the richness would really set this dessert on top!! amazingly though they don't have ice cream in this establishment. :-( I felt like the prices were extremely reasonable and I loved everything about this little place. it is so nice to support locally owned establishments like this, and you really get a sense of "community" when dining here. read more

I've been going to Metro 8 every Wednesday with a group of friends (between 5 and 20 of us) for over 5 years. Half-priced bottles of wine help, but if the service and food weren't awesome, we certainly wouldn't be so rabid about continuing on with this tradition. I've sampled quite a few of the menu items and I have yet to find anything that wasn't excellent. Not a single person in our many Wednesday nights has found anything to complain about at Metro 8 and even the odd vegetarian accompanying us has found a great meal here. The only warning for new people is that the provoleta is just addictive. I can't wait to get back to Metro 8 this week! read more

If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. This is my hands down favorite place to dine in Durham, for both the food/drinks and service. They have fantastic steaks, the fettuccine porcini and lobster ravioli are excellent pasta dishes and their key lime pie is phenomenal. The cocktails are on the hefty side, and they even pour the extra concoction in your own shot glass. I've also hosted several business dinners in their private room, and Cassie the owner and her staff always bend over backward to accommodate any of our additional needs. read more

Top notch food, drinks and service. Expensive but worth it.

Since purchasing the book "Seven Fires: Grilling The Argentine Way" by Frances Mallman, I have been fascinated with grilling techniques from Argentina (besides their wine and great basketball!!) So I took my wife to dinner here one night as a date night. Had the Provoleta as an appetizer and it was delicious. Much better than my attempt on the grill. Main entree for me was the churrasco and my wife had fish. Staff was very friendly and one of my spots to return to. I am even asking the chef to let me take cooking lessons from him! read more

I would recommend the flank steak only! The NY strip is not as good. Great sweet potato soup and fries. Awesome desserts !

I went after seeing Brian Regan with my father and we just wanted to find a decent restaurant nearby the DPAC this is where we ended up and i say its a good restaurant first the atmosphere was nice with the whole rustic hole in the wall place but its meant more for date night so it was dim lighting and the prices are rather high with you looking at between $70 to $100 for two it wasn't exactly what we wanted but for certain occasions it would be great. Also the service was excellent we were well taken care of. Now the food i had the pork chop with the baked potato and it was very thick and very juicy and i thought it was very good lots of flavor and the right amount of tenderness my dad got the lamb chops and he said they were also very good a little tough but had a lot of flavor and it was about what you'd expect not necessarily worth $38 being as you can go to outback and spend $15 less and its about the same plus outback has beer on draft where as this is more of a hard alcohol and wine place. So overall if you have a date or some other special occasion and your in Durham then definitely check this place out but if your with a big group or with a parent or just lonely go somewhere else. read more

I found this place unremarkable. The atmosphere was pleasant, but the food was forgettable. The filet was underseasoned, the asparagus bland and undercooked. Presentation was uninspired. I was disappointed by the chocolate souffle, which I would describe as chocolate lava cake and not a classic souffle. As such it was fine, but no better than a chain restaurant. The servers were friendly but seemed inexperienced, so the service was mediocre. As someone else said, I don't regret eating there, but I probably won't go back or recommend it to friends. read more

So off to a good start with a perfectly concocted martini. Then had a wonderful waitress that provided just the right amount of service. Also would like to note that the bar and wait staff were also very nice and welcoming. Started off with the squash soup, that was a bit salty for my taste and had a bit too much chicken stock and not enough squash. Cesar salad was perfect. Just the right amount of lemon to balance out the other flavors. Hot bread rolls were melt in your mouth and served with a wonderful flavored butter. The Churrasco steak was just as good as in Buenos Aires and perfectly cooked and the grilled asparagus and baked potato sides were also done to perfection. Also love the location on 9th Street and the historic warehouse decor fits the surroundings very nicely. We stayed late and were the last ones in the dining room and got only smiles and thank you's from the staff. Definitely going back next time I am in Durham. read more
