Hidden gem! Romantic. Steaks so tender and flavorful. Service was perfect. He found it as we were coming back from a road trip and celebrating his new job. What a surprise!!

I've said it before, & I'll say it again.... I look for value for money. This is yet another place. No frills, no fancy. It is a true meat place. Good cuts, hardly any fat, cooked as ordered and tasty. Entrees include a salad and a baked potato. Accoutrements include celery, carrots, olives, cheese spread, and a meat spread with crackers. This is not Fleming's, it's not Ruth Chris. Frankly, I don't like Ruth Chris. This is a rustic place, straightforward, and they make steak right. This place is about the food and that's what should be judged; not whether or not the decor is to your taste; give me a break. The waitresses are not stewardesses, but they are friendly and no nonsense. I like that! Picky people don't come. If you can see the forrest through the trees, (pun intended), welcome!

Retro Relish Tray - saw a lot of these in the 60's & 70's!

This is one of those places that you just don't think about as a destination, fine dining restaurant, partially because of the location (outskirts of Chapel Hill, near Allen & Son BBQ, absolutely no road visibility), partially because of the very limited menu, and partially because it is a simply appointed place, dimly lit with no windows, mostly wood and some antiques, about as old school as you'll find. The converted farm house is down a rather narrow, graveled road, feeding into a large dirt & gravel lot. The house is all wood, low, and with out windows - it is the sort of place you'd expect John Wayne's character in the Searchers to step out of. We arrived shortly before they opened, and walked up to the front entrance - a large wooden door, which was securely padlocked. Exactly at 5:30, a lady came from around the back of the building, removed the padlock, and ushered us, and about 10 more people, inside. There is a narrow foyer leading past the register and into the first of 2 large rooms - all along the foyer walls are pictures of notables who have dined here over the years, many UNC connected. The tables and chairs are old style wooden ones, and the place mats are plastic covered copies of the small menu. What light there is come from small, old fashioned lamps, and is it very dim. The flashlight on my cellphone allowed us to read the menu - there are no additions to this menu, these are all the choices. The menu has 2 types of steak (a NY Strip & a Rib Eye), Beef Tips, Chicken Breast, Grilled Tuna, and Pan Seared Shrimp as entrees - that's it. For appetizers they offer Chowder & Shrimp Cocktail. The sides are equally simple - Sauteed Onions, Sauteed Mushrooms, Salad, Baked Potato, Baked Sweet Potato, and Shredded Cheese. And there were several dessert choices, as well. We had been quickly seated, orders taken, and an old time relish tray was delivered, complete with soft cheddar cheese, a country liver pate, pickles, peppers, and celery and carrot sticks - a very 60's kind of thing. We munched on these as the front room filled over the next 30 minutes or so. The place gets more than a little noisy as it fills, on this night aided by two continually loud and grumpy toddlers - so nice of the clueless parents to share those moments. The well sized salad followed soon after. The food came out in good time, bowls of soft butter, sour cream, and bacon bits were brought to each table along with the entrees. We had settled on the Rib Eyes, and they were very tasty, cooked correctly to order, and brought to the table in a very hot, flat iron skillet. All in all this was an enjoyable experience - a simple, flavorful meal, served very efficiently by very pleasant people. You come here as much for the experience as the food, though the food is good. Not everyone will appreciate the experience, but on this night this old timer was filled with people who obviously did.

The shrimp was great but didn't care for the sweet chill sauce with the calamari, it was missing something, not your standard sweet chill sauce. The steak, salmon and duck was great and cooked exactly as asked. The burger was ok, it was very big, but kept falling apart. Meat was literally rolling out the bun. The cream spinach was excellent, pass on the scalloped potatoes. Ended with the banana pudding and creme brûlée, both were great! The cocktails were also really good and flavorful. What I didn't like is that they ask what type of salad you want as if it's included with the entrees, beware it is not! Overall 7/10!

While that spot didn't wow us with its limited menu, Bin 54 absolutely delivered. We made a reservation literally five minutes before walking in, and they accommodated us right away. The service was warm, attentive, and professional -- we felt welcomed the entire time. To start, we had the crab cakes, which were perfectly crisp on the outside and full of flavor. My boyfriend ordered the bone-in ribeye and couldn't stop raving about it. I had the filet mignon, which was cooked exactly to my liking and melted in my mouth. For sides, we shared the scalloped potatoes and creamed spinach -- both rich, comforting, and generously portioned. We ended the night with the banana pudding, and it was phenomenal -- easily one of the best we've had. Decadent, nostalgic, and beautifully presented. Bin 54 turned our last-minute change of plans into a truly memorable night. We'll definitely be back.

We remembered her from a previous visit, and will request her in the future. Cocktails and mocktails were excellent, as was the sparkling wine enjoyed by one of our party of six. We were surprised and delighted to see foie gras on the menu, and it was perfectly prepared, with an accompaniment of blackberry jam. The lamb belly entree was very rich, but cooked perfectly. The vegetarian plate was beautiful and delicious. Celeriac soup and beet salad were both terrific, and the barbecued shrimp were spiced perfectly. Our only letdown was dessert - only one of the 3 options appealed, so we ordered 3 of those (key lime semifreddo) and found them to be beautifully sweet/tart. We'll be back.

Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable and gave us a rundown of the menu before we ordered. I decided to start with the Cheese Plate, which included 3 different cheeses, buttered baguette slices, jam, mustard, and pickles. I enjoy cheese plates, and this one was great, but I can understand it may not be for everyone. My wife ordered the Red Fish, which had a more Southeast Asian-inspired twist to it. It came over rice and pickled onions and beets, and the flavors were a blend of lemongrass and coconut. The fish was cooked well - nice and tender, not too dry - and the flavors went well together. I ordered the New York Strip, which was delicious - the meat was well cooked, had great flavor, and was a generous portion that was very filling. The only gripe I had was that the char on the eggplant overwhelmed the flavor, so most of what I ate tasted like burnt eggplant. The place is clean and fairly laid back for a more upscale restaurant. If you're looking for a nicer restaurant in Chapel Hill where you might spend a little more, but you'll get great service with interesting food options / combinations, then look no further than Hawthorne & Wood.

The star of the show in my opinion were the hush puppies and the corn and wild mushroom risotto. There were sooo many different flavors that perfectly complemented each other. I was blown away. And the pig cheek on top was incredible. 500/10. Our server made great recommendations! Then-- chaos and heartbreak ensued in the form of a fire alarm. We were forced to evacuate the restaurant as the fire department arrived , leaving about half our meal on the table. After 30 or so minutes of waiting out in the cold (we were apparently the only guests who hadn't paid out yet) our server came to find us. He asked us if we wanted to just give him our credit card information and he would ring us up later, when the fire department gave them the ok, as he understood not wanting to wait around. It broke our heart to leave our leftovers, but we agreed and went to go get the car. Thankfully we are stubborn.. and optimistic to a fault. And by the third time we circled around the block, the fire truck was pulling away. I ran in and asked if there was any chance our food hadn't been thrown away yet, and it hadn't! The staff was happy we had been able to come back, and they packed everything up for us, even taking the hush puppies off the bill and sneaking in a complimentary piece of key lime pie. I'm so glad we were able to tip our server appropriately for his great service-- and rescue our leftovers. Happy ending. All was well. (And the fire ended up being something innocuous in the unit above the restaurant)

We were told that we could order something else, but that the steaks would remain on the bill because quote "the manager feels these are quality cuts of meat". So, there was no effort to accommodate us, the customer. No offer of remaking the meal, no nothing. Instead, we were treated like we were trying to get a free meal, when we clearly wanted to try another menu item. We were trying to salvage our Valentine's meal and instead we left after less than 45mins with a $200+ bill and a pair of rubbery steaks we still cannot eat. I sincerely hope the management can see this is clearly not how you gain and keep customers. We were eager to recommend Tandem to friends, at this point we will not.

Even a month ahead of time, so good luck). But don't let it stop you if you don't have reservations, just be smart. We've learned to arrive when they open, because the bar and the high-tops in the bar area are all first-come first serve. There are times we've had just drinks and an appetizer/rolls or dessert. Other times we've gone for a full meal. Most recent visit was Saturday before an 8pm show at DPAC, and I heard words that I've never heard before that made me love them even more. "We will hold your leftovers for you until after the show". Uh, big heart for me! And smart for them, because we would not have ordered dessert otherwise, and I would have been sad to have had to waste even a bite of my fave, the roast chicken. Husband declared his "wedge" salad and filet to be perfection, and nothing makes him happier than a couple Dirty Durham's, while I can always find a nice glass of wine. We tried the Apple Crisp for dessert along with a couple coffees, and it was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. The Service was also terrific, as always. Always. Jared was my server and he was the best!! I started with the soup of the day, cream of spinach. The flavor was awesome, and as Jared mentioned, it wasn't a heavy creamy soup, it was light and delicious. For my entree I ordered the 6 oz Filet medium, it was cooked perfectly and had the best flavor. I didn't really need a knife it was so tender. For my side, I chose the potato puree (mashed potatoes) and they were like whipped silk, and seasoned perfectly. I made sure to save room for dessert and I'm so glad I did. The chocolate silk pie complimented my glass of red wine perfectly. I ate every bite. I definitely recommend dining at Nana Steak, make a reservation if you can. I hear the cheeseburger and the rolls are both delicacies, they only make a certain amount a day. Make sure you ask your server about the specials of the day that aren't on the regular menu.
