I stopped in, this was my first and last time. I sat at the bar, and the bartender seemed more focused on cleaning than on assisting me. When he finally walked up to me he asked what he could get me. I asked for a wine menu. In my experience, after you receive drinks, you're either asked for or given a food menu. I was never asked or given a menu. I stopped in for food as well. Lo and behold two white males walked in and sat at the bar. Beautiful interior, delicious food, and wonderful staff. Perfect for date night, solo dinner or a celebration. We enjoyed the steak egg rolls, their warm rolls, the prime rib, and the bistro chicken. Went last night and not sure what their deal was but they completely botched all three of our party's orders which took forever to begin with...the manager came to the table, agreed the food was ridiculously prepared (salmon so overcooked it looked like chicken and a steak that was completely RAW and not anywhere near the medium rare ordered) and brought us new dishes. Two new dishes were ok while my filet was still completely RAW on the inside again. Not even close to being cooked. Management asked to correct it again however at this point I had no interest in waiting another 20-30 minutes for a properly cooked steak while everyone else waits. The manager really didn't give a damn....Seems like they have an incoming UNC freshman working the grill in back....for a $200 dinner you can do much, much better. read more

We have been at this restaurant more than 35 times and Carolina L the server was not very attentive and wanted to be right in her words and explaining we could not have medium rare prime rib even though we have had medium rare many times. She wanted to lower our expectations that our food would likely be overcooked to our liking even when we were ordering at 5:30 pm. Appetizers plates, dishes, menus were left at table throughout meal. Food has been good on past visits but an unfortunate customer service incident while trying to make a reservation makes it difficult to want to return. We are planning a large family dinner of 10ppl a week ahead of time and decided to call here for a reservation as instructed on the website. The individual that answered changed her tone as soon as I said I needed to make a reservation for ten. She acted bothered and asked that I call back on Monday because it was the middle of their valentines rush. To be fair, it is Valentine's Day but after 8:30pm. Another great dinner at Stoney River. In all of the times we have been here, I dont think we have had a poor experience. The service is timely, food is accurate, and the drinks are top notch. Our waitress this vist, Marley, was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. My go to order is the wild mushroom meatloaf. The sauce is excellent. I rarely get anything different. This time I got the stacked cheeseburger and it blew my mind. We got the steak frites. Usually it is excellent but this time the steak did not have a good sear on it. The food is usually always very good here and so is the service but I feel like the standards have gone a bit down in recent years. The service doesn't seem as high quality as previous years and neither does the food. It's still good though but the one thing that has always been consistent still is them not knowing how to cook steaks the proper temperatures. I would ask for a med well steak and it ALWAYS comes out well done but they are always willing to cook it again for you but sometimes it comes out wrong twice and I don't want to say anything again. My partner has also ordered medium steaks and then they come at med well. I think the people cooking them just cook them a little too long. Their Thai salad is probably my favorite thing on the menu though. read more

Solid 4 stars. Parking is plentiful since this is at the old University Mall. There entrance is beautiful...as soon as you walk in, you see an immaculate bar and an impressive wine "cellar". We had a group of 12 for an office Christmas lunch. We had to sit at two separate tables but while it wasn't ideal, it was still fine. We had a reservation for noon and while we were seated by then, it still took over two hours. I'm not sure if that's normal but it felt like it took longer than usual. The waitstaff was great. They were knowledgeable and helpful. We ordered the steak bites and spinach dip as table appetizers. Both were good. I got the ribeye with the Mac and cheese. My boss was paying but while my ribeye was AMAZING, at $47...I thought it was a bit over priced. All sides are a la carte...I wish I would have got the lobster bisque. Several people at my table got the sweet potato casserole and they loved it. But let me tell you about the carrot cake. If you even remotely like carrot cake, get this. The piece is GINORMOUS. The ambiance of the restaurant was very intimate, with low lights and a classy feel. For starters we had the French Onion Soup, and the house salad. And for our main courses we both had the bone-in ribeye (hers with chimichuri sauce, mine with a peppercorn), Gouda Mac and cheese, and garlic whipped potatoes. And for dessert chocolate gonace cake. This was my second time dining at Stoney River and I always look forward to it! The wait staff is very professional and work to make dining there a truly wonderful experience. We were checked in on regularly, all questions were answered, and our food (appetizers, entrees, and dessert) came out quickly. The only reason I took off two stars is that the food is VERY salty. The first time I went, I got the blackened salmon Caesar salad and almost couldn't eat it. This time, I got the ahi tuna salad. It was very very good, but the outside of the tuna was extremely salty. For dessert, we got the carrot cake, and it was the best carrot cake I've ever had (and that's saying something because I love carrot cake)! Food: I encourage you to try the appetizers they are fantastic (especially the steak rolls) I've tried almost all fish dishes here, the Prime Rib, Steak Frites, Stacked Burger and even the chicken tenders. They are all delicious but this review won't do the taste justice just try what you'd like. Ambiance: It's a little dark so sometimes my mom needs her glasses if we went in from the bright outside. I am honestly horrified with my whole experience here. I hate to start this year with a bad review but I would not recommend this place to anyone with the horrible service and food quality that my friend and I got here. To start off, we came here at 1:45 pm on a saturday afternoon to a pretty empty restaurant. We asked for a round booth (there were 4 empty ones) the hostess said no because it's for bigger parties. The restaurant was empty, and nobody came in the whole time we were there, but whatever. For the food- we were excited to order seeing the menu and all the options they had. We got the chicken biscuits and shrimp toast for appetizers. The shrimp toast had a FLY stuck in the sauce with its wings and legs sticking out. We noticed after we tried one, and sent it back. Either way it was a bit too saucy and we weren't a fan. However the chicken sliders were good and the biscuits were delicious too. For main entrees, we got the cowboy ribeye steak and new york strip steak with creamed spinach and mac and cheese. We asked for it to be cooked medium. As you can see, my steak was medium raw and my friends steak was well done. The sides were also not good and this is coming from two people who love mac and cheese and creamed spinach. I would recommend the potatoes or something else. I don't know. After we sent back one of the steaks (my friend just ate the lump crab on top of hers and didn't want her steak anymore), they asked to cook it more but I my appetite was gone by then. When we got our check, our server told us they made her ring up my side even though I had sent my whole steak back that came with the side? The normal thing to do would've been to take off the whole item. The thing that shocked us the most was that no manager came back around to apologize about the dead bug in our appetizer, or our 2 steaks that were cooked wrong, but instead sat back and told our server what to charge us on. This is my first dining experience with stony River. Met for a Christmas dinner. Ambience is beautiful. They have a full bar. Seating was comfortable. Service was 7/10. The waiter appeared to be distracted. It was nice to see managers on the floor assisting with service. Really enjoyed the food. We tried the wild mushroom meatloaf and the cowboys steak. Both seasoned well & the mashed potatoes were delicious. The asparagus needed more seasoning and it was cold. Our group was pretty large and yet the server was very good at keeping track of everything we ordered and consistently checked on us to make sure we liked everything we ordered. The calamari do not appear on the menu but was recommended by our server. That was delicious! I recommend the steak rolls and crab cakes as well. I could not finish my bone in steak, it was a large and tasty cut. The au gratin potatoes was on point. My daughter is a bit picky when it comes to mac and cheese. I was skeptical about the Gouda mac and cheese since she only likes the one from Panera Bread. Boy, she finished her plate. The crème brûlée was excellent. Everything was great. A high end steakhouse vibe with casual comfort, Stoney River offers great food and table service. The ribeye was cooked perfectly, deviled eggs were delicious, and the spinach dip was delicious. I wanted to love the au gratin potatoes, but found them flavorless and overcooked with a watery cheese sauce. I believe the seasonal vegetable was purple cabbage, but I do know that I liked it a lot. My friend really enjoyed the Mac n cheese and prime rib. The best end to the meal was the carrot cake! It's multiple layers, does not have raisins, and is amazing! Not too sweet, just a perfect sweet delight-and enough for 3 people, or 3 really individual good times! We actually requested that it be split 3 ways, which they gladly did for us! The ambiance is classic and elegant - white tablecloths, dark & candlelight setting. Our server was attentive and friendly throughout our meal. The bread rolls were delicious (Highlight!), our appetizers were fresh, and I particularly enjoyed the coffee-cured filet I got. My partner's ribeye had good flavor but it was a very thin portion (resulting in them overcook it). We also tried a seasonal side of Brussels sprouts, but they lacked flavor and were not cooked evenly. Overall i think of Stony River Steakhouse as an averagely good steakhouse, which was agreed upon by multiple others who had dined here. Slightly more modern and less stuffy take on a traditional steakhouse. The menu is predictable with a few unique appetizers. We quite enjoyed the tuna stack which was recommended by our server. It's nice to start off with something lighter and it's quite sweet thanks to all the mango. The whiskey shrimp on toast was also better than expected. The shrimp are plump and not overcooked, the sauce is rich and flavorful. We then waited quite a while to eventually find out that our ticket got lost in the kitchen and they never started our order. When we finally got our tomahawk steak, we weren't even hungry anymore. The steak itself was very good though, perfectly cooked to medium rare with a nice char on the crust, buttery and well seasoned. The brussel sprouts were unremarkable. For dessert, the carrot cake comes as a giant slice, enough to last a whole week. It was good but very sweet. I believe it got comped due to our long wait for the steak. Let me tell you how I was so taken aback by the plating. I was unsure what it was. It literally had a chicken ball and an avocado ball topping it. Like really? I have never seen a chicken ball in my life and I'm sure you haven't either, Why? The steak was very underwhelming. I'm not sure whether it was the salad itself or the plate, but it had a peculiar smell, I took two bites and was done. My boyfriend ordered NY Strip medium. Nothing about it was medium. This is surely Medium-Well to Well Well what have we DONE. Definitely not what the customer ordered. This is surely the first and last time coming here. The bread and honey butter is worth the price of sitting at the bar and having a drink because they are complimentary. Beyond wine and Bread , you're playing at your own risk. I usually enjoy eating at Stoney River, but last night (the day before Valentine's Day) was a disappointing experience. We had a 7:00 PM reservation, arrived on time, and checked in with the hostess. After waiting 30 minutes and noticing multiple parties who arrived after us being seated, I asked if there was an issue. The hostess seemed flustered, and I got the impression our check-in had been mishandled. She seated us immediately after, but had I not spoken up, it's unclear how much longer we would have waited. Our server was polite but noticeably preoccupied throughout the night. We were never offered drink refills, waited about 20 minutes for the check, and had to ask twice for a to-go bag. The most concerning issue was that portions of our salmon were undercooked (raw inside). A manager happened to stop by, saw the issue, and took the plate back to the kitchen to be cooked properly. When it was returned, they added extra mashed potatoes and broccoli, but there was no apology or acknowledgment of the mistake. Overall, while I understand the restaurant was busy, the combination of disorganized seating, inattentive service, and improperly cooked food made for a frustrating experience.
