Just wow. Arrived as a party of five to celebrate a birthday. This was our first experience at this restaurant found tucked away in a local shopping center. Arrived at 6:00 pm and while they were busy, we were promptly seated by a very friendly hostess. Our waiter arrived table-side promptly, took drink orders and returned to review the daily specials and answer all of our questions. My wife opted for the beef tips while I selected the salmon. Both were from their specials board. Now, I'm usually reticent about order a restaurant's specials. They generally consist of products they desperately want to move and, my experiences have often been subpar at best. The food was delivered promptly and we were both floored by the quality, presentation and savory flavors. The salmon was perfectly executed sitting atop a hash of potatoes, peppers, andouille sausage and Brussels spouts. A light honey Dijon mustard provided the perfect balance to this dish. Frankly it was the single best salmon dish ever to pass my lips. Perfectly cooked, glistening and flaky. My wife's beef tips were as tender as you'll find, nestled against perfectly cooked and creamy mashed potatoes as well as a serving of steam broccoli. I was stunned that such flavors could be found so affordably and frankly put to shame similar dishes found elsewhere at twice the price. It's very much a come as you are family atmosphere. Very glad to have another go-to restaurant close to our house that's a great place to take kids & serves breakfast all day! We tried it out for dinner last night. Pretty small inside, so it gets crowded fast. Thankfully, we got there early. Our waiter was very friendly & knowledgeable. My son ordered the silver dollar pancakes off the kids menu and added a side of bacon, which was 3 slices. My husband got a made-to-order omelet with a side of roasted potatoes & wheat toast. I wasn't in a breakfast food mood, but wasn't sure what to get. Our waiter suggested the Philly cheesesteak sandwich, so I got that with a side of fries & honey mustard. We all enjoyed our food very much. My son loved the flavor of the pancakes and bacon. My husband said the ham in his omelet had a great smoky flavor. My Philly cheesesteak was very tasty. Take this review from a skeptic....I have experienced the real thing at the Jacksonville Florida location. SO excited that a Metro Diner would be opening in Birmingham Alabama! And I want this to be a gentle nudge to these newbies.....you can do better! Food looks great, but portions are smaller than at the Florida Diner and oh so sadly bland. I love a good diner and was optimistic about this place. So my wife and I tried it for dinner tonight. Unfortunately it was not a good experience. I ordered the signature Bissell Breakfast (I love breakfast food any time of day), my wife had the chicken fingers. First up, my breakfast -- scrambled eggs, grits, toast, bacon, and a short stack of pancakes. Sadly, the food was sub par -- not even as good as Waffle House. Sure, portion sizes were massive but I'd much prefer smaller portions of flavorful food. The scrambled eggs were bland - I wondered whether they had been cooked to order, or whether they came out of some sort of scrambled egg mix? I don't know, but I make much better scrambled eggs at home. The grits were also bland. Even the toast was disappointing -- it was overcooked to a cardboard consistency so that it easily broke apart (and the bread used was pretty bland too). Butter was cold and would not melt because, well, the food was not particularly hot. The pancakes were HUGE but (you guessed it) bland and dry -- we make much better pancakes at home. The bacon was actually good -- three thick slices, properly cooked to be crispy. The bacon was the only food in the "Bissell Breakfast" that had significant flavor and it was the saving grace of the meal. My wife's chicken fingers were good (large cuts of chicken, well cooked). The accompanying fries were average at best (probably frozen) and the slaw also nothing special. Service was fine, but this place uses iPads for ordering and checkout. I'm not a fan of this trend -- the tech malfunctioned when we placed our orders (causing our waiter much awkward frustration), and checkout was also awkward. Also, oddly, the only napkins we were offered were cocktail napkins (the tiny squares that are intended to be set beneath cold drinks). I don't know if they were out of proper napkins or what, but it was strange. I left puzzled. We had high expectations of this place, but I doubt we'll be coming back. My advice to the owners: invest in FRESH ingredients of higher quality. Focus on flavor instead of portion size. Scale back the menu if necessary, but move away from the canned / frozen menu items. And for heaven's sakes, run across the street to Winn Dixie and buy some napkins. read more

I love that they have a mix of lunch and breakfast that you can get anytime of day. My husband enjoyed the meatloaf, while I had the high protein breakfast option (eggs with sausage and bacon). They have one of the best hot chocolates in town and the waitresses are very friendly. The wait times can be long, but Sunday mornings during church time usually isn't too bad. read more

Woot! A great restaurant in Inverness, FINALLY! The portions are ginormous and full of flavor. I've been twice in one week. The first time was for lunch. I ordered a veggie wrap with chicken. It was huge, like 7 - 8 inches and packed. The best part was the fried jalapeños that stayed crispy until the end (which was just half the wrap, too big for one meal). The macaroni and cheese side was generous and muy creamy. My second meal was breakfast. Juevos rancheros with sausage. This was the least favorite of the two meals, but it was still yummy. The sausage was bland. Now if they used Conecuh sausage, it would have been perfect. The staff was being trained on the electronic order pads, so that was a little time consuming, but beside the small pauses while they keyed in our order, service was almost impeccable. The manager went out of his way to make sure my friend's bacon and toast were the way she special ordered it during our breakfast visit. I would definitely make this a regular spot. read more

Enjoyed Sunday brunch here yesterday. We only waited 10 minutes for a table - not bad for Sunday morning, plus there is a self-serve cart out front with coffee and water for those who have to wait for a table. HOLY FREAKING COW THE CHICKEN AND WAFFLE DISH IS SO GOOD. That's what my thought process was as I got this dish and then proceeded to eat the dish. The server was awesome & he warned me to not freak out when I got the dish, and of course my mouth dropped when I got it. It's so much food. I ended up having four pieces of chicken! Plus the waffles. The server made the special "spicy sweet" sauce which was a mix of syrup & Louisiana hot sauce. He mixed it at our booth. I thought it was neat. The waffles were fluffy & the strawberry butter..... omg it's so delicious! My hubby got the corn beef hash and he loved it. The wait was quite long but seemed typical for a Sunday. But I loved how organized it was. They let you sign in and you can wait outside where they served coffee (house made and it was yummy!). There is a speaker system so we sat down in front of Thirstea & we were able to hear when it was our turn to be seated. We have eaten at this location several times and have had great experiences. We're originally from Jacksonville, Florida (where Metro Diner originated) so I was really excited when they opened a location close to us. My parents are in town, also from Jacksonville, and I suggested they go there for breakfast with our daughter. Well....that was a mistake. Evidently an employee named Megan wasn't having such a great day. She was rude, argued about how to order an egg, raised her voice at my daughter when she asked to have her eggs re-cooked (they were raw on the inside) and then STILL wouldn't let it go when my mom commented that she thought my daughter would get sick from eating an almost raw egg. Also, any time they asked for anything she sighed all exhausted like they were asking for the world. I was so embarrassed and felt bad that we even recommended going there. read more

"Awesome" is the word I would use to describe this inviting Diner. Shortly after we arrived we were seated very quickly(we sat at the bar) and were greeted with friendly cooks and staff. The staff were incredibly friendly and treated us with a pleasant atmosphere. I ended up ordering chicken and waffles, a long time favorite of mine and have countless dishes all from different places. After our food arrived I took the first bite and was greeted with a amazing flavor, I finished the whole plate and that was the biggest plate of food I have ever consumed and I don't regret it at all. My husband and I decided to check this place out and will return when it's warmer. It was a cold morning and this place was packed. We didn't have to wait, but learned why quickly....the only table available was directly in the path of the door...leaving us freezing and our food got cold quickly. This was not the restaurants fault but I wish we could have experienced this place with out the freezing breeze from outside on us and our food. The menu options were great. I had a hard time choosing but ended up sticking with something easy: eggs, Hashbrowns, and a biscuit. My eggs were freezing cold after two minutes (due to being seated in the path of the door), but I was able to chow down on the Hashbrowns and biscuit quickly enough. The Hashbrowns were excellent but the biscuit was a tad burnt. My husband had huevos rancheros and loved them. He had a side of Hashbrowns but they didn't come out until 20 minutes after the huevos rancheros. He notes the homemade fried tortillas were delicious but he wished there had been regular jalapeños on it instead of fried ones. Like I said, the cold air had a negative impact on us, and they were too packed to move us to a new table, but perhaps if we had been sitting elsewhere the food would have been better and we would have enjoyed this place more. read more
