We stopped for lunch on our drive home from St. Petersburg. Absolutely delicious! First of all, this is the one and only restaurant I have ever ordered chicken noodle soup from where it actually had flavor. The chicken was tender and the broth was delicious, The kids and I ordered breakfast fare and the pancakes and french toast were divine. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles and I ended up stealing half of his chicken because it was so scrumptious. The spicy sauce they serve with it made the dish even better. My wife and and I were coming home from Savannah to west palm with some friends. We decided back in Savannah that we would spontaneously choose a place to eat on the drive. Metro Diner was by far the best choice we could have made! The food was amazing, the staff was very attentive, the food came out in a reasonable time and piping hot despite us rolling in for the Saturday morning rush. We had a fantastic experience from the start and then towards the end of our meal the manager came to our table and said "We feel that the food took too long to get to the table so we are picking up your check." Not a discount, or one free meal, but the whole table's check, which was almost $50. We were absolutely blown away! None of us felt that was necessary by any means but it was so much appreciated. It's so refreshing to see a business go above and beyond for their customers and take initiative before there is a problem. That is the way to keep and have return business. The Hendricks Avenue store is our favorite location...ecclectic! The food is always good...we go for the breakfast.....portions are super huge (can't eat even half of it---California Eggs Benedict). I absolutely love this diner! I just recently moved out of Jax Beach but when I did live there I went to Metro Diner all of the time! They have great food and the service is always pretty good. They also have a nice outdoor seating area which is beautiful on nice days! My favorite thing on the menu is the Charleston Shrimp & Grits, delicious! I love going here on a nice Sunday morning with some friends or family. Some things on the menu are a little pricey for breakfast/lunch but it's worth it for such high quality yummy food! I heard they were even on the Food Network once! I guess my only complaint is that they're only open until 2 PM. It's good hangover food I wish they were at least open till 3 or 4! read more

This was our first takeout dinner We have ate at this restaurant many times. And we were very satisfied. We tried to show some support at the times we are living right now, but the food showed that the restaurant does not care about presentation or the food at all. The food was terrible! We ordered two turkey plates. The stuffing had to be very old, it was so dry. It must have been reheated over and over. We found out when we got home the plate had no rolls, no Canberry sauce. And very small portions. We were regular customers before they closed for take out only. Not sure if we will return when they open, but definitely not for takeout! read more

What I like best about Metro is their unique breakfast dishes. The typical breakfast fare is good, it's solid quality. The shrimp and grits? That fried chicken and waffles? Whooooeeee. Pick up the phone and call home about it cause it's that good. I've been late to work on occasion cause I had to satisfy that need for a hot sauce and maple syrup mash up on crispy light chicken and airy waffles with strawberry whipped butter. I really can't believe that I have not written a review for a place that we have been to maybe a hundred times.We used to go here for breakfast every Sunday before church. Now that they have become corporate we have stopped cause to has gone down. We liked it more before when the owners were there. Even after they sold out the first time it was better. Now you are just a ticket number and not so much a guest. They have kept the menu the same but you can,t taste the heart in it anymore. Also, the tickets could not be changed because some of the errors were part of a meal, so the server ended up giving us a drink credit. Looks like they use corn flakes. The waffle is good to. There was a wait for a table, but we snagged on sitting outside. It was a nice morning, and we enjoyed watched the peeps walking by while we ate. The portions here are large. Prices are fair for what you get. I can't really do backflips over this place because of the plate sharing charge. We ordered a pretty good thing called the breakfast pie or something and it was totally fine, really good, enough for each of us to have a light breakfast for $6.50 and they charge you $2.00 to split it. Same portion, one more plate to wash. I know there's some economic rationale behind this policy, but I don't care. It's just nickel and diming your customers. I'd even be a little more lenient if their coffee was better. It's not bad it's just standard whatever. Cool Moose at least has some local organic something or other. Also, their lox and bagel is $10. Again, I'd say just go to Cool Moose and get their Hello Bagel with salmon. I'll give them an extra star because their servers are so pleasant. read more

My husband, friend and I went to the Metro Diner on 10/10 after hearing how good it was on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Definitely be prepared to wait. They have lots of chairs on the sidewalk for that very purpose. The wait was about 25 min. It's a small, crowded, but cozy place. The menu had some really interesting items, but a bit pricey as everything we ordered didn't come with any sides. My husband had the Yo Hala on the square french toast which was awesome and HUGE...covered with a mountain of fresh blueberry/strawberry compote. My friend had the croissant french toast with almonds, which was about 3 or 4 flattened out huge croissants and it was delicious. I had the poundcake french toast which came with 4 tiny pieces of french toast and compared to everyone else's mine looked like a ripoff. I dont know why the portion size was so small compared to everyone else's but I will say it was very delicious. Price wise i wouldn't pay for this again, but taste wise it was good. They give you the option to pay $1.75 extra for 100% real maple syrup vs good ol' Log Cabin. The coffee was typical crappy diner coffee, but we didn't expect anything different. The service was pretty fast for how busy they were. Our waitress was very nice. The owner came around afterwards and asked how everything went. When we left about 2 hours later, there were still about 20 people waiting to get in. Overall, it's a nice local diner with fresh home cooked food. Try the Yo Hala! read more

I am really kind of shocked at the reviews here - my experience with Metro Diner has been that it is absolutely one of the best diners around - and certainly in Jacksonville, which, as far as I can tell, has some pretty depressingly bad breakfast places (and I have tried many). Everytime that my hubby and I have been there, we have had exceptionally good food, cooked fresh and served with a smile. I LOVE the shrimp and grits, which is served only on the weekends and has the freshest, most delicious local shrimp with andouille sausage and grit-cakes (you will just have to try them). My husband gets the Southern Benedict (biscuits, sausage, poached eggs, and gravy), and it is outstanding. He has also had the Hoagie, which the owner has the bread specially made for - so that the bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - just like a proper hoagie you would get up North. The owner, Mark, is one of the most lovely people I have met, and he genuinely loves his work and works hard to make his customers happy. It seems like some of the other reviewers were expecting that the diner/cooks would know things about their particular tastes - like over-toasted english muffins, which I, for instance, would never want. I also know not to order the corned-beef hash anywhere without asking if it is canned. Grits in the South are, in my experience, thicker than you would get up North, but also better. I guess my thought would be that if you have some very specific taste for something a certain way, ask for it. If you are the type of person who doesn't want a large portion, ask your waitress if the item you are ordering is a huge portion. If you want a half portion, ask if they might do that for you. If it is possible, Mark will make it happen, no questions asked (my hubby often orders things that are not even on the menu, and Mark makes sure that they are made for him!). All in all, this is truly the only place in Jacksonville I would even consider for breakfast - and I heartily recommend it. read more

So my husband I and went here, first stop on our honeymoon. We ordered the chicken and waffles. The waffle was good. I mean it's a waffle so it can't be any better than it is. The strawberry butter on top was amazing. I personally needed no syrup. My husband, of course, couldn't pass up the opportunity. The chicken was fried WAY too hard and WAY too long. The breast piece felt like a paper towel in my mouth and I had to use the "sweet and spicy" sauce (Louisiana hot sauce and syrup). We also ordered the steak omelette. It was ok. The eggs weren't seasoned at all. The hash browns weren't cooked all the way and they were greasy. The cinnamon raisin toast was good but you have to ask for butter. The juice we ordered was good but the waitress automatically assumed we wanted large glasses instead of small so we had a lot left over and I had to take mine home. Overall for the chicken and waffles it's a solid 4. Would have been a 5 had the chicken been cooked correctly. read more
