Our waitress, Zoe, was phenomenal. They may have been out of the wine we ordered but she was very suggestive of another alternative that turned out to be even better. She came back, took our orders and not to our surprise, it all came out perfect because she was very in tune when taking our orders. Several people checked on us throughout our dining experience. However, Alex, he stood out. He made sure to clean extra plates and glasses out of our way and made sure we were having a great time there. Talk about a true neighborhood spot; this place is the definition of it. The food is really delicious, the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the whole atmosphere feels warm and inviting. My only critique is that the appetizer selection is a bit limited, but the huge variety of main dishes more than makes up for it. I had the gumbo over rice, which was fantastic, and my wife ordered the shrimp, which was also amazing. I love this place and will definitely be back. Went for dinner on a Sunday night. They weren't super busy inside but were doing a TON of takeout orders. They have pretty big menu. I decided on the chicken picatta and my husband got the Alfredo with blackened chicken. The service was pretty quick and friendly. The food came out hot and in a reasonable time. Mine was really good and flavorful with two pounded chicken breasts and a large serving of pasta! Plenty of leftovers. My husband's Alfredo was very soupy, he mentioned it to the manager and they offered to remake it. I think they got busy in the kitchen and left something out of the sauce. Late lunch on a Sunday with my family. Came here by suggestion of my sister and we were not disappointed. I love that the menu is ecclectic enough that there's something for everyone but no so large that it's overwhelming. Our server, Kenzie, was wonderful. She was professional, helpful, prompt and super kind. She even helped us move to another table to accommodate an additional person to our party. Had a very busy weekend! I'll try to do the food justice. Today we celebrated a friend's birthday at Fresh Chef on Lawyer's Road in - I believe Matthews - on the border of Matthews and Indian Trail. Excellent food, cannot complain! Service was pretty good, of course always appreciate the Manager at that location - Frankie, she's wonderful! Frankie always takes care of us and I appreciate that so much! We had a variety of different dishes, both breakfast and lunch. The breakfast foods were good, the crab cake good, salmon? A Mother's Day treat! We had reservations and were able to change them to an earlier time without any problem. Started with tuna appetizer, enjoyed shrimp and grits, salmon, and a shrimp salad. But we went there on Sat night and had the tuna app (waaaay too peppery), she had the black and bleu filet (it was ok but the asparagus was tough and not well prepared), I had the trout (ver dry and tough, flavorless). Service was ok, but I had an empty water glass for about 5 mins but lots of staff around the door area. Again, super nice folks working here. I have been trying to check out local spots more often in the area and this one has been on the list since it had great reviews. I guess it used to be "Steven Mills" and now combined with "Fresh Chef" restaurant. The service is good, quick, and everyone is very friendly. We tried it for breakfast and the best thing was the omelet, the veggie & California with egg whites, and they were just ok. The other items came out somewhat cold or burned (or if you want to call it extra crispy): potatoes, grits, waffle, cheddar biscuit, toast. It wasn't very fresh, so not sure if some of these items were just sitting out for a while. So overall, omelet and orange juice were ok...hence the two star rating. Went for Sunday lunch. Prior, we checked out other Yelp! raters and their reviews. Two Elites gave 5 star reviews, so looked to see what their 5 stars meant. One averaged 66.8 five stars out of 383 reviews. OK, 5 stars were a common opinion with this Elite. The other Elite average 80% 5 star ratings out of 95 reviews. Ditto. Many of the reviews for Fresh Chef were not substantive enough to be of value in determining how valid the many low ratings were. Wife and I plus two of our teenage grandchildren went on Sunday for lunch. Overall, a low 3 star rating. What do my star ratings mean? The value of my ratings is 8.9% 5 star, 37.9% 4 star and 45.2% 3 star. Fives and 4 stars are rare. This Fresh Chef experience was a 3 star rating. Disappointing. Large open area mixed with booths and tables. A lot of people. Excellent menu as Fresh chef serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is on a separate menu and it looked great. Ditto the lunch - dinner menu. Teenager has a kale salad and a chicken sandwich. The kale salad was, to my surprise, excellent. Nice blend and flavorful, salty with parmigiana cheese. Her sandwich was also rated as great. The other teen had fried eggs and toast. A-OK. Wife had a mixed salad, again rated excellent with creamy garlic dressing. I had the Chicken Parmesan over angel hair pasta. Not good. Chicken was just a split breast, rather than being pounded to be thin. The sauce was thick, rather than being lemon chicken stock with onions and capers that flowed. It was, to me, like eating a pile of near flavorless carbohydrates. I admit that this might be a difference is style. Service was great, attentive waitress. Place was very clean. If we do return, it will be for breakfast, which is highly rated. Read the ratings as the 5 stars don't have substance and do not negate the many very low ratings. To be honest I was worried trying it here due to questionable reviews but so happy I did. I was seated right away, love the interior, decor and overall comfortable vibe. We had omelets and they were very good and reasonably priced! I also got the $5 mimosa which was delish. Admittedly our server was not very friendly but was at least attentive. It's great see these guys expanding. The Cornelius location has been a favorite spot of mine for years. I've never had a bad experience at any Fresh Chef and the food is always tasty...and actually healthy(ier). This one carried on the name well! I love their salads (and I don't usually go for the salad when eating out). This is one place I can really get a light nutritious meal out and enjoy it as much. For this lunch I had the teriyaki filet salad. Absolutely delicious. Enough steak to enjoy, but not so much you'd feel bad about. The texture was perfect and that teriyaki flavor complimented the salad nicely. Tons of greens. And they were all fresh and arranged perfectly. This salad was amazing. My friend ordered a burger. As a huge fan of Fresh Chef I was very excited to try out this cafe! The outside patio is so nice with umbrellas and plenty of seating. I went with a group of 7 and we had really good service. We got the California blt, fries, French dip, salads, pot pie and brownie and cobbler for dessert. I also highly recommend the creamy garlic salad dressing. Everything was brought out pretty quickly and the food was delicious! The desserts were really delicious and plenty to share. I can't wait to go back and try other things on the menu! I have to come back and update my past review. I'm docking 2 stars because the last several times I've been here [since my initial review] have been frustrating. Multiple times, I've ordered half/half and sweet tea to drink, and all the times I've gotten it, I'm served tea that tastes old and almost has a mildew taste and smell. It's like it's been sitting out for days. I ordered the grilled salmon salad cooked medium, and the salmon was charred and dry. A few nights ago, I ordered a salad and some of the tomatoes were so gross and bitter when I bit into it that I had to spit it out. So sad because I used to love this place, but now am feeling disappointed each time I leave, so I'll probably not be back again for a while. And in that timeframe, the hope is they'll step up their game and operate at the higher standards we are all used to. read more
