Menu is well-thought out and offers something for everyone. Dinner was solid. I ordered the Rigatoni with Fennel Sausage and my date had the Tagliatelle. Perfect portion sizes to be full but leave just enough room for dessert. Metropolis is one of my favorite places in Boston for drinks and dessert. Great wines and the banana bread pudding is consistently satisfying with a dollop of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel. read more

I had brunch here this weekend and was pretty disappointed. First, we walked into the restaurant and stood there for about 10 minutes before a hostess came over to seat us. I, in serious caffeine withdrawal, got a cup of coffee before going over the very limited breakfast menu. (Little did I know that the mediocre coffee would cost 2.95 and the waiter would fail to stop by for refills. Seriously?) Aside from the service being awful and incredibly slow, the food was sub-par. I ended up ordering the special for that day - a mushroom, mozzarella, and leek omelet that was surprisingly good and my boyfriend ordered pancakes, which were nothing really special. The syrup they had was Vermont Maple syrup blend. HA. The homefries were good, but the toast was STALE. It wasn't just overtoasted toast, it was flat out stale. We finished all our food except for the stale awful toast, and the waiter came by, picking up our plates without a word. All in all, an awful experience. Shan't be going there again. read more

We went for brunch and both ordered the "Ultimate Huevos Rancheros" (after consulting Yelp) which comes with the (also recommended) black bean hash. We also ordered a side of spicy chorizo and the special side of the day, griddled chocolate chip muffin. I ordered a small freshly squeezed orange juice as well. I'm glad we ordered the sides because the portion sizes are quite small. Brunch should be a reasonably hearty meal and this definitely wasn't. The small OJ should have been prefixed with "very". However, the food was very good. Not excellent, but I would give the food alone 4/5. I was happy with our selections. However, what lets this place down is the service. I know it's popular. I know it's busy. I know they're trying to serve and keep as many people as happy as possible in a small space. So I can forgive the 30 minutes quoted on the phone becoming 60 minutes. But the service ended up being unfriendly and hurried. None of the staff cracked a smile at any point and it actually felt like we were a bit of an annoyance just being there. And (a personal annoyance) they whipped the plate away from under us before we had even finished chewing the last mouthful - extremely rude in my opinion. Glad we tried it but not sure we will come back considering there are so many better alternative options nearby, like Masa and The Beehive. read more

I adore this place. Its the only spot in the south end without horrendus wait times for sunday brunch, probably because they don't have a liquor license, but they make a mean mimosa. When you first enter this place, it's small and charming. It was the holiday season and they had these cute lights by the door that you can see through the restaurant, it adds a little romance to the place. The service was good, the only thing I would critic about the service is we ordered apps first then wanted a few minutes for entrees and the server said she wouldn't take one order without the other. So we had to order everything all together, but they did pace everything for us so we didn't feel rushed. The food was good, not great, just good. The best entree was the Ribeye Steak, which was the special that night, it was a good steak, it had a lot of flavor, but just a good steak, I felt like nothing was special about the place. If I could give this place 4 and a half stars I would. What a great breakfast, great service, and great coffee! Everything I could have ever wanted... Except that the place was definitely made to serve people under 5 foot 9. I happen to be over 6 feet and it was uncomfortable for me to eat in a place so... Compact! OK. Fine! Ouch (1,2 & 3 star) Yelpers! I've only ever brunched here and I've only ever loved it. Whether or not that's a product of me averaging 2 grapefruit mimosa's per visit, (yes I said brunch, no you can't judge) is probably debatable. All kidding aside, I find the Metropolis Café completely charming. Yes it's a pain that they don't take reservations, but there are generally seats at the bar and the South End is not lacking in other brunch spots if you don't care to wait. In no way am I any part Southern (I tried my first burrito this year - and hated it) but the grits here are to-die-for. Have also had great luck with the Chive & Boursin Scrambled Eggs or the French Toast. Service is disappointing if you're expecting Morton's grade, but for brunch I think it's just fine. I had a funny exchange with a waiter last time: Me: I didn't see grits on the menu, do you not have them anymore? Him: Yes Me: Yes you don't have them, or yes you do? We both had a laugh (in hindsight, probably at my expense.) I've yet to try dinner here, but definitely recommend brunch. read more

Metropolis is such a cute romantic spot in the south end. We went for my birthday and got a few things we remembered being awesome, and they were. We started with the mussels (my favorite dish here) and the Brussel sprout salad- both delicious. The Brussels are in a cheese/Cream sauce, good but not light. For meals, my husband got the lamb shank and I got cod. Lamb was tasty and a huge portion, cod was tasty but small protein portion. To drink I got the aperol spritz which is off the old drink menu but they made anyway! For desert we got the blueberry cake, which was good-filled with blueberries. Service was fine. Pretty small little place. Very intimate. Wine and beer only. I had an endive salad with Roquefort and bacon that was a little light on flavor except for the Roquefort and bacon. :D Yum. Had a nice chianti with the bucatini carbonara (like humongoid spaghetti). The dish also featured loads of garlic, pancetta, and black pepper. Very good. My special lady friend got the Salmon with horseradish and cucumber crme frache. It also had some roe on it, which I discovered I am absolutely not a fan of, but then again I'm not much for seafood to begin with. Despite this, I thought the salmon was actually pretty good. We then had a chocolate cake with vanilla (?) ice cream that was quite delicious as well. I guess the prices were about what you'd expect. Parking in the South End is pretty rough, but worth it for this place. Try Washington St. or just keep driving around Tremont until you get lucky. read more

Even though it's a bit tight inside (probably seats 50 people or so), the food and wine made up for the coziness and loudness. Definitely try the Gnochi and Duck Confit, probably the best app on the menu. Good wine selection and reservations are a must. read more

This is a brunch review. I've been to Metropolis for the aforementioned meal quite a few times and like it, which is why I've been back - Hi it's nice to meet you, I'm Captain Obvious. The french toast is really yummy and is a good go to. The eggs are great too, especially the chive and boursin omelette. Personally I could care less about toast with brunch (unless it's deliciously thick and fluffy) and ask the waiters to replace it with more home fries; you can't really go wrong with more home fries. Also, the cocktails are pretty standard brunch drinks but are fun to get your morning buzz going (because why the hell not). It's a cozy restaurant and has that South End charm and feel to it. It's priced really well for the portions and quality. All in all, can't go wrong if you're looking for a new spot to try out. read more

I love metropolis. They have limited seating, but the bar area has about 8/9 seats at the bar first come first serve. Be sure to make reservations prior, and always call if you have more than 4 people in your party. The food is absolutely delicious every time I've been. Chicken is usually the last entree I'll choose from any restaurant menu, but at Metropolis- this chicken is heavenly! I actually combine the chicken and cauliflower dish together to get the best of both worlds! :) it is a special request and more money but definitely worth every bite! Everything on the appetizer is great too. My fave is the asparagus tartare, Brussel sprouts, and beet salad. I've tried the other apps as well, and they don't disappoint! Food was good, service was odd. Was there on 5/30 for dinner. Ordered rigatoni, waited a half hour and they brought me the salmon. The rigatoni then came out in 5 minutes. Later, when the self-important guy in the white coat came over and asked if everything was ok, I said "yes, great" but of course it wasn't because my rigatoni was late. I then asked him for more water because we had not seen our waiter since 1987 and he was clearly taken aback. Must be beneath a Cordon Blue graduate to fetch water, so he didn't. Food was good. The hidden gem of Tremont street, at least that's how I feel about this place. My girlfriend and I dined here for valentine's day and it did not disappoint. The reservation process was made extremely easy by utilizing "open table". Parking was comparable to pulling teeth without any sedatives however the experience made up for it three times over. We're we're running a little so decided to call to let them know. The hostess was very friendly and personable, telling us "no worries, we'll see you when you get here!" It's a very tiny place with tight eating quarters, however the cliché "don't judge a book by its cover" has never rang so true. Our waiter was incredibly professional. He knew every little nuance about each and every dish they had to offer. I took his recommendation and ordered the mahi mahi special. Words cannot begin to describe how delectable this dish was. The perfect crust of the fish, mixed with the blood orange gastrique and the pumpkin squash was absolutely divine. It was expertly crafted and cooked to perfection. My girlfriend ordered the roasted chicken which was equally as extraordinary. The "fall off the bone" chicken was roasted beautifully and seasoned just right. Finally came time for dessert. And once again we were left marveled at the prestige of the chef. The creme brûlée was heavenly. If need me to explain then you shouldn't be ordering dessert. The biggest (and most pleasant) surprise of the evening was the competitive pricing. I cannot say enough about our experience at Metropolis Café. We will frequent this place any chance we get. Have been here many times over the last 5 or 6 years, both for brunch and dinner. Two of us were there recently and were very disappointed. The quality of the veal in there sauted dish had grizzle in it. A veal scallopinni should never have grizzle in it. I experienced a similar experience with a delivery about 6 weeks ago. Food: 4 stars Service: 2 stars I went here for restaurant week with my boyfriend and another couple, and I would probably eat here again -- as long as I got a different server. First course was the watermelon and feta salad, which was tasty but a bit disappointing when it came to the watermelon-to-other-stuff ratio. I was imagining a bowl overflowing with juicy watermelon and greek-cheesey goodness, when what I actually got was a small plate with greens with a few scattered pink cubes. Perhaps my expectations were too high. On the bright side, we ordered the gnocchi with duck confit as an additional appetizer (from the regular menu), and that dish more than compensated -- the pasta tasted homemade, and we practically licked the plate clean for the sauce. For an entree I had the striped bass, which was excellent. Perfectly cooked, and the accompaniments were well thought-out and equally scrumptious. I tasted everyone else's entree, and while theirs were good mine was definitely the best. Dessert was the chocolate pudding cake with vanilla bean ice cream, which is a chocolate-lover's dream. I would go back again just for this rich, gooey treat. So in summary, the food was awesome. The service on the other hand was not so awesome. We showed up a little late for our 7:30 reservation, and we didn't have a table until 7:50 or so. Then, after we were seated it took another 5 minutes to be acknowledged by our server. We ordered a bottle of wine which was brought relatively quickly, but no one stopped back for us to order food for another 10-15 minutes... we did notice our waiter paying lots of attention to an attractive redhead at the bar, though. Although he appeared to write down our orders, he managed to forget which of the entrees someone ordered (there were only 3 options...). Throughout the meal he was blatantly inattentive, and to top it off he forgot my boyfriend's after-dinner cappuccino (which wasn't offered, but instead had to be requested). My advice? Head here for some great food if you have some time to spare and don't mind prodding your waiter now and then. read more

I wanted to give this place 2.5 stars - I came here for brunch with a friend on sunday - Brunch ends at three, and we arrived around 2:30 and the place was pretty full, bubt not a hectic full, and several tables were getting ready to leave. After we gave our name to the waitress in charge, two seats at the bar opened up and she seated us - casually..and didn't bother to ask if we would prefer a table. Fine by me, it looked nice at the bar, the waitstaff seemed friendly, chatting with the diners. boy, was I wrong. Turns out, the friendly service is only for regulars? or certain customers that were blonde hair blue eyed?! I have no idea what it was about me and my friend, but we barely got a smile, or any serive at that. The food was average. i ordered a spinach eggs Benedict and the the spinach was overcooked and NOT fresh. i was not too impressed. I cant think of any reasons for their lack of service, other than the fact that maybe they were closing soon and wanted their shifts to end, but still, that's no excuse for the poor experience. read more

And since we'd walked several blocks in the cold, we ordered a bottle of wine before perusing the menu. Part-way through our first glass, we discovered the prix-fixe menu. What a deal! For $29.95, you get a starter, an entree, a dessert and a glass of wine! So, that's what we each ordered, even though we were working on a bottle already. My dining companion and I each started with a small salad with walnut vinaigrette and I had the horseradish-encrusted salmon while my dining companion enjoyed a very cheesy rigatoni with sausage. And for dessert, we both opted for the banana bread pudding, which was an excellent way to top off our wine-filled evening. Our bartender/server was very attentive, but not overbearing. My husband and I have always loved Metropolis and returned to celebrate our 3rd anniversary. We have been taking COVID precautions quite seriously since we have a 17month old son who is yet unable to be vaccinated - Metropolis went above and beyond to confirm outdoor seating and provided adequate spacing, as well as hand sanitizer at each table. Our waitress Isabella was wonderful and surprised us with complimentary champagne to celebrate our anniversary. For years we have been to Metropolis for brunch - best Huevos Rancheros around. Recently, we moved to the South End and decided to give Metropolis a try for dinner. Absolutely amazing!!!!! We made our reservation for 8:00 and we were seated promptly at 8:00. Our server was so helpful and made excellent recommendations. We each ordered something different so we could all try a little of each. Not one dish disappointed. Having recently traveled to Grand Cayman I had enjoyed their local seafood (wahoo). I was thrilled when I heard wahoo was on the menu - absolutely delicious. Toward the end of our meal, we were going on and on about how delicious everything tasted. Our server went back to the kitchen and minutes later the chef was at our table. He ten shared with us how to make the cauliflower at home. We will definitely be returning to Metropolis on a regular basis for both brunch and dinner. Everyone should give Metropolis a try - you will not be disappointed. read more

I definitely owe Metropolis a review since I go excessively and love it so much. It's such a great restaurant with amazing food. The atmosphere is not too loud and is so cozy. My favorite dishes are the Brussels sprouts appetizer and the rigatoni. The chicken is also great -- you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. We were told the wait for brunch today was thirty minutes, but we ended up waiting for about an hour. However, we waited in the rain on the sidewalk for the culinary experience... and it was worth it. My husband got the huevos rancheros which were delicious -- not very spicy, but after adding some Tabasco, they were perfect. I had the black bean hash and eggs - I love black beans, and they gave the hash a very wonderful dimension of flavor. The chorizo was perfectly grilled, not overdone and not mushy. The service lacks something to be desired because after taking our order, we never saw a waiter/waitress again until they brought the check. The best way to describe this place is comfort food for foodies. Come here for the well-made classics, like the steak or scallops entree. Details worth mentioning - i.e. the good news: The mussels appetizer had a slightly tangy, smooth sauce - this is the closest to the Mediterranean theme that I saw from this place (see below) The entrees were good, but ordinary, as in been done, but then again, good will always be good; However, it's the side dishes that showcase the chef's attention to detail, which was a pleasant surprise. If I remember correctly, the whipped potatoes had a truffle flavor to them, which made an otherwise ordinary side into something flavorful that I couldn't stop eating. I ate all of the whipped potatoes on my plate, which I almost never do, especially when they accompany something as rich as hanger steak (which was a lovely pink medium rare). I struggled with the rating - this place won points for quality but lost points for creativity and presentation/theme. One major thing that prevented this place from getting a higher rating from me is that I couldn't see the Mediterranean inspiration, which is irksome from a self-proclaimed Mediterranean bistro. I also wanted a bit more creativity - I shied away from the prix fixe meal (which is a good deal) because I couldn't get excited about the mundane salad appetizers. read more

I wish I could give Metropolis 6 stars. I am remiss at not writing sooner. This is my favorite restaurant in Boston... and certainly in the count on one hand favorites anywhere. From Mikala (sp?) at the door always with a smile - to each Server and Bartender - to the Chef and Cooks in the kitchen - they are all just terrific. The menu is interesting and diverse although I admit ... I eat the same thing for dinner nearly every time while convincing others to get something else (so I can taste it). I love small restaurants that have cute decor, but it sucks when you're hungry and want to eat right away. If this is you on a Sunday, expect to wait a while if you come during prime breakfast/brunch time (9-11a) but if you can wait it out (come lunch time when the specials are probably gone by then) the wait won't be so bad. What I love about this place (and so did a guidebook to food in Boston my boyfriend owns) is the grilled blueberry muffins. Not sure if I remember seeing it on the menu, but maybe it's one of those things that people just know they do, and its not listed on the menu. Anywho, very yummy. Brunch at Metropolis is pretty good in terms of service and price for the South End. They are often missing random odds and ends, but work hard to please customers. I'm not a big fancy brunch person, so the eggs and toast with a side of home fries always hits the spot and i know plenty of others who enjoy everything form their huevos rancheros to their eggs benedict. If you're in the mood, the mimosa's are pretty tasty and a great way to kick off a leisurely brunch and stroll in the south end. Be prepared to wait. Luckily, it appeared as though they could squeeze us in. Hah...swell. I had two glasses of the house wine, delicious merlot. The salmon which was delicate and perfectly seasoned. My bf and I came here for our Valentine's Day celebratory dinner (which wasn't even near Valentine's Day, but that's besides the point). When I first walked in, I immediately assumed that I was going to be freezing because the place is so small and there was one of those curtains "blocking" the cold winter air from creeping in. I was wrong - toasty warm all throughout the meal. We made a reservation for 7pm, but I don't really think that we needed it. It definitely wasn't crowded and we pretty much had our selection of any seat we wanted. Sweeeet. It's really tiny inside, but don't let that fool you - their menu is decent size and their food is amazing! We shared a mussels appetizer and it had a tomato-based cream sauce underneath the shells. Usually places will have a white wine sauce for mussels, and I thought this was different and absolutely delicious. For my main course, I had the carbonara and it was so good that I purposely only ate half of it so I could bring the other half to work for lunch the next day. That, and to save room for the vanilla bean creme brulee! So good. read more

Went here for Rest week on a Friday night. Place is a bit small (cozy), and has the French Bistro decor. Ordered a nice bottle of Chianti for a fair price ($39 dollars). First course for the gf and I were lobster cake. Mine was cooked well. Nice flavor and delicious. Hers was a bit over cooked. She said it was fine, but crispy. Main course for her was Cannelloni Stuffed with Basil and Summer Squash. It was ok. Had some decent flavor and a nice sauce. I chose the Crispy Chicken Confit with pepper corns. The plate came out looking good, but when I flipped the chicken over, it was burnt. Not just a little crispy, but so black you could see the sheen on it. I asked for another order. I would have thought the cook would have taken care of it when he saw it the first time. No apology from server seemed odd too. They made another plate in about 10 minutes and got it right. Chicken was tender and nice. I really liked the pepper corns, it gave a nice kick. Sadly, could not eat with the gf. Dessert was nice. It was a lemon mouse with pistachio cookies. If you like that sour lemon kick, this is a dessert for you. It was nice and light which was good after a meal. Overall, it was ok. Place was really hot. Only had fans going. I was expecting much more from Metropolis, based on the hype and the lines on weekends. Coffee was not as strong as I like, and my cup was left empty without refills. I understand that they're busy on weekends, but the server stopped by only to get our order, then disappeared. The check was randomly dropped off, and it made it feel like we were bothering the server. My omelette wasn't seasoned enough despite the cheese in it. It was pretty greasy and bland at the same time. The berries in the fruit place were fresh, though it was a bit random that they cut up an entire banana into the fruit plate. The bagel plate was pretty standard with lox, and you can't really go wrong with that. I like the feel of the place - it's very Italian cafe-like. However, I expected brunch to stand out more. I know you can't compare South End to Somerville, but I'd much rather go to Soundbites any day. Yummy yum Yum!!!! After reading all the reviews here, I decided I had to check it out for Brunch. The line was rather long and they have no reservations since it is a VERY intimate restaurant. Intimate you say? Yes, Intimate--as in the only thing keeping you and the person behind you apart is that wood. We were a party of 4 and arrived a little before 12. We waited for about 20 minutes before we were seated but well worth the wait. They only serve beer and wine, so no bloody mary's (which is why they get 4 starts instead of 5). Mimosas were small but decent. My husband got the huevos rancheros and he absolutely loved it. He was raving about it the next day. Small strips of fried tortilla chips on top of sour cream, salsa, and the huevos. My friend got the brioche french toast which also looked pretty amazing. My girlfriend and I both got the grits with chorizo and eggs. WOW. I LOVED it. I'm a southern girl and I know grits, and did they do grits right. Umm Hmm.
