I recently visited Mexican Sugar in The Domain, and overall I'd give my experience a 7/10. The atmosphere was definitely one of the highlights. I sat on the outdoor patio, which had plenty of fans to keep everyone cool, and the view of the plants and trees made for a really relaxing dining experience. The inside of the restaurant was also beautiful and well-designed. I'd rate the ambiance an 8.5/10. The service, however, could definitely use some improvement. It took about 10 minutes before anyone came to greet our table, and after our food arrived, we realized we hadn't been given any silverware. We ended up having to ask another server for utensils. On the bright side, once we ordered, our food and drinks came out in a reasonable amount of time. For food, I'd give it about a 7.5/10. I ordered the lump crab enchiladas, and they were delicious! They came with cilantro lime rice and refried black beans. The cilantro lime rice paired perfectly with the enchiladas, but I wasn't a fan of the black beans. I'm usually someone who loves beans, but these had an aftertaste that just wasn't for me. One thing I highly recommend is the horchata. It was honestly one of the best horchatas I've ever had--super refreshing and full of flavor. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and would come back, especially for the enchiladas, horchata, and the beautiful patio. I just hope the service is a little more attentive next time. read more

Mexican Sugar is a popular spot that started in Plano, TX, where my girlfriends and I used to have the best time, so I was excited when they opened a location at The Domain. This location in particular is absolutely beautiful. The moment you walk in, you instantly feel like you're going to have a good time. The drinks are solid, though they do lean a bit sweet, and the food is consistently good. My husband ordered the pastor tacos, and he can be pretty picky about tacos, especially pastor, but he loved how they prepared theirs. I took a bite and have to agree--it was a really good taco. All in all, Mexican Sugar is a great spot with a beautiful space, solid food, and fun drinks. It would be perfect for larger groups, corporate dinners, celebrations, or a lively night out. read more

The food here should be great! Today, the chef was heavy handed on the salt. From the chips to the guacamole to the fajitas. Everything had been like double salted. We chose to eat outside, although it was a warm 95* day - (we are in Texas). The service today was very slow! They have plenty of waiting staff, so whether it's their system or the people, today they seemed to me to be slow. This restaurant is in an awesome location and Mexican food is a great choice for anyone, Just as the Domain has a draw to shoppers from all over this state and beyond. Great spot in the heart of The Domain! The restaurant is top-notch with an upscale Mexican vibe. I loved the ambiance, lighting, décor, and beautiful finishes throughout. The long bar is a great touch, and the music created a fun Latin atmosphere without feeling overdone. I've been to the Dallas/Plano location, but this one feels much more modern since it's brand new. Our server (I wish I remembered his name) was excellent and gave us great recommendations. The drinks were delicious, and the food was flavorful. The only downside is parking. Since it's in the middle of The Domain, you may have to park in a garage and walk, though valet is available for $20. Shoutout to the hostess who was kind enough to seat us inside even though the table had a later reservation, and she let us know ahead of time when we'd need to leave. It had candles throughout the entire restaurant, the lighting was warm, the music wasn't super loud, plates and table decor were very cute, and they had throw pillows all around. I stopped by for happy hour and, despite having a reservation, was a little disappointed that several walk-in guests were seated before me. Once I was seated on the patio, however, the experience quickly improved. Covered and closed off so no one walks in and out. Nice table setting and perfect spot to people watch. My server was fantastic--knowledgeable, attentive, and great at recommending both food and drinks. Following her suggestions, I ordered the ceviche and the vegetarian quesadilla. I initially planned to order an entrée as well, but the portions were surprisingly generous, and the appetizers alone left me completely satisfied. For drinks, I tried the margarita flight, which included hibiscus, classic, and spicy watermelon flavors. The spicy watermelon was easily my favorite, offering just the right balance of sweetness and heat. When a friend joined me later, I ordered the Chupa mango cocktail, which was another great choice. Parking was a bit hectic, but I got lucky and found a spot in the lot. The restaurant is located where the Ice Cream Museum used to be, across from True Food, making it fairly easy to find once you're in the area. I've heard great things about the enchiladas, so they're definitely on my list for my next visit. Tortillas were also a bit thick for my liking. The Squash blossom quesadilla was great as we remembered from last time, full of flavor and fillings! There are no shortages of Tex-Mex places here, so for a chain restaurant to stand out says a lot. First off, the restaurant is MASSIVE but also beautiful. Even the plates they use when they bring out the chips and salsa are stunning! My entire group loved everything we ordered. Some people got tacos, someone got the steak and lobster fajitas, I got the enchiladas. All amazing. The margaritas were also so good too! Everything was also reasonably priced. The interior is really pretty, I love the design of it! I'm definitely behind on the food scene because I did not know Mexican Sugar replaced the Museum of Ice Cream, which I really loved. So the space is also reallyyy big. We didn't have a reservation and got seated immediately. It looks like a fancy place, but you can also wear casual clothes. You get complimentary chips to start but they add a lot of salt. It was so salty and we didn't get to eat too much of this. The taco plates we got come with rice and refried beans. Honestly, I think the sides were better than the tacos. The tacos were just ok-there are better taco places in Austin. Service is also really slow. The tortilla soup was warm, rich, and full of flavor--perfectly seasoned broth with tender chicken, crispy tortilla strips, and just the right amount of spice. We visited on Saturday to celebrate my friend's birthday with a group of 10, and it was a lovely spot for the occasion. It was a beautiful day to sit out on the patio, and while we didn't get the full indoor ambiance, everything inside looked gorgeous and had a great vibe. The patio overlooks the domain area. There's soon room to bring the vibe inside outside! The margarita flight was a big hit with the table, and the salsa was one of my favorites. It took a little time for the flights to come out, but once they arrived they were worth the wait. Service overall was excellent. Shoutout to Jessie for taking such great care of our group. I enjoyed the carne asada tacos, the rice was also unique and delish. It was a big table, so it was hard to get a full read on every dish, but everyone seemed happy with the overall experience and their meals. I forgot to make a reservation but was able to site outside in the patio. The place is dog friendly and next time may bring mine. There was a huge bar inside including lots of seating. Recommend to bring a lite jacket where it was a bit chilly inside. I ordered the Brasas Chicken tacos along with a Classico Margarita. Meanwhile chips and and salsa dipping sauce was placed on the table and both were really good. The chips were nice and crispy. The corn tacos contained grilled chicken and consisted of three. We didn't have a reservation but luckily got seated right away, though I'd definitely suggest booking ahead if you are coming during peak times! The ambiance here is great. It's an open space with very high ceilings, perfect for a large party. The rustic-modern Mexican decor looks beautiful. They serve complimentary chips and salsa to start. The chips were crispy and the salsa was very tasty. We ordered the Oyster Mushroom Enchiladas and the Cheese Enchiladas, both served with side portions of rice and beans. The overall flavor profiles were very good, and we especially loved the rice, which had a unique and refreshing mint and lemon flavor. The only real downside was the execution of the enchiladas themselves--the tortillas felt a little hard and chewy, likely from being slightly over-baked, and they had very little filling inside. Mexican Sugar recently opened at the Domain replacing the Ice Cream Museum in Austin, TX (Century Oaks Terrace). The restaurant is modern, bold, and thoughtfully designed. Mexican Sugar embraces the concept of open space. When you walk in, you immediately notice vast space with sultry lighting, warm tones, and interesting décor (a convergence of southwestern, cowboy and modern chic) ...a lot to take in. At the entryway is a massive chandelier that looks like an upside-down metal cake. Thus, you are immediately captivated before even touching a morsel of food or drink. According to our server Emmanuel, they also have live mariachis on Thursday nights...an authentic Mexican touch (typical in San Antonio, TX). The food is sophisticated Mexican food with bold flavors and authentic flare. My friend and I ordered guacamole, and mesquite grilled chicken (she ordered the plate and I ordered the fajitas). She taught her food was too spicey, whereas I was totally enthralled with the flavors of my food. The guacamole was creamy, smooth, and flavorful. My fajitas were steaming hot with bold seasoning and enjoyable to eat. It is hard to tell the flavoring of the fajitas; however, I could taste some citrusy and herb notes. The tortillas, a standout, were homemade, soft and fresh...so delicious! Emmanuel, when serving our table, was pleasant and friendly. He appeared to have a large service area, and he came to our table very infrequently. In addition, there was a 30-minute wait period between the time we ordered and when our food was served. We visited Mexican Sugar with another couple and had such a fun, memorable evening. We had a reservation and were seated right away in a large but cozy side room. The décor is beautiful and sets a really inviting tone from the moment you walk in. Service was a highlight all around. Every person we encountered had a warm smile and greeted us. They quickly brought us water along with chips and warm salsa. The salsa had great flavor, but I did find myself wishing for some heat. We lingered for a bit catching up before ordering and never once felt rushed. For drinks, we ordered a margarita flight and the Jefe, and both were a good. We started with sharing the quesadilla appetizer and wow, it was easily one of the best I've had. The meat was incredibly tender and packed with flavor. For our entrées, we ordered a mix of dishes. The ceviche was fresh and bright, the fried shrimp and elote tacos were lightly battered in masa and crisp, and both the enchiladas and chicken fajitas were good. Dessert did not disappoint! The flan was smooth and delicious, topped with chopped fruit and the cuatro leches cake, with its horchata and nuts twist, felt like a fun and creative take on a classic. The mariachi band brought such great energy to the night. I loved the variety in their set, especially the surprise of hearing some George Strait mixed in. I'm not sure how this place has more than 3 stars, maybe they were having an off night but our experience last night was pretty awful. First of all, our drinks took 35 minutes to come out- that's a pretty hefty wait for a few margaritas! SOME of our main dishes came out about an hour after that, served at room temp, not fresh at all. The rest of our group's orders didn't arrive for another 20 minutes, and even the food that came out last wasn't hot. Even if it had been fresh, the food quality was average at best. Our waitress was MIA most of the night, to the point where we were trying to track her down to get our check looooong after we finished eating. TLDR: Bad service, bad pacing, and cold food! Solid and beautiful meal we had with coworkers for happy hour and dinner. I stopped by a little after the work day wrapped and they were very busy and packed inside and outside which was a good sign given their grand opening happened just a few days ago, the happy hour drinks and appetizers were a great option to get us going. The food and other drinks and water took some time to come through, but we'll give them grace as they work out their first week's learnings to get into their groove. The interior is such a beautiful space, and I would love to sit outside next time, and enjoy the abundant chips and salsa offered. This place is stunning. I'll start with the best thing so far. The aesthetic if the venue is gorgeous. Went tonight for a celebration dinner for a friend. We ended up there just before sunset so was nicely lit. Then as the sun set the full beauty of the space revealed its self. Now the service. I'll have to say is a mix bag. Our server was amazing, their section seemed to be larger tables of 6 plus guest and they did an amazing job of touch base with all guests. We got there and looked over the menu and rather quickly ordered a round of beverages to enjoy while we made our final decision on food. Well this was the main issue. The bar was ridiculously slow. Our first round was 2 margaritas a hibiscus drink (can't recall the name) and two sangria's (one white and one red) It took about over 10 min for the first drinks to come out. Not all of them just the first. The two margaritas and the hibiscus drink came out. About 5 mins later the sangria's. At this point we still hadn't ordered but as soon as the drink did come out we placed our food order as well as a second round of drinks. When I looked the bar seemed to be staffed well. I saw I believe 4 bar tenders maybe 3 the space isn't massive so not sure what caused the hold up. Now the food. We order a few things and everything had great taste. We had guac and ceviche to start with and then each of us had some taco plate. The food came out rather quick compared to the drinks which was a bit odd. So all in all. I would say go for happy hour so you are saving some coin and not spending on time waiting. Like I said our server Michael was a rockstar. He definitely was the star for the evening. Came here during happy hour to try the New Mexican Sugar! We were sat right away, the vibe is very upbeat even on at 2:30pm on a Thursday. Our server was very friendly and she told us what were the Happy Hour Specials. The food was really good, I absolutely loved the flour that's used for the tacos. The drink tasted amazing, and we're $12-$14, ($2 off for happy hour). I do think they were on the "juice" rather than cocktail side, only because after 3 it really didn't have an effect of drinking 3 margaritas, but they tasted good either way! It was only $7 during happy hour. The waitress said it was the most popular choice. I had queso and salsa, they were okay. I expected them to be more flavorful. For my entree, I got the steak and lobster fajita. The steak on the menu was not available, so they gave me a ribeye. It didn't take long for the food to come. My food was delicious. I wish I had more tortillas, but I was okay without them. The portion size was pretty good and nothing was skimpy. I loved the way I was able lobster's sweetness . It was a balance between bold grilled flavors and still letting the lobster have its natural flavor. My steak could've been seasoned a little bit more, but it was cooked well. As a total foodie, I had to check out Mexican Sugar during their grand opening weekend and it definitely did not disappoint! I believe it took over the space of where Grand Lux Cafe used to be, and wow... this place is absolutely gorgeous and huge. Such great vibes which made the whole experience even better. We arrived about 20 minutes before our reservation and were pleasantly surprised to be seated right away for a Fri evening. From start to finish, the service was 5 stars! Every team member we interacted with was incredibly friendly and attentive, constantly checking in on us despite how busy it was. The drinks were fantastic, all of our food was delicious and very affordable for the quality. The Spanish mussels were hands down the star of the show Highly recommend! I can honestly say that Mexican Sugar has easily made it to the top of my Austin restaurants, and I cannot wait to come back! Met a couple of friends for lunch here last week and I was really looking forward it it as my first experience was at their grand opening which was fabulous! The food was delicious and they modified my cocktail to put less sugar/syrup. Everyone was friendly but it was so busy we had to flag our waitress down several times or ask someone else who would then tell us they'd let our waitress know. Other than the extended wait to order, get a to go box, or ask for our bill when we were ready everything was good. I hope that's just a sign of the word getting out and they are still sorting out their ideal server ratio with the big demand for their food! First time here and it did not disappoint. Noah was amazing! Provided great service, super friendly and efficient and provided great recommendations! Our fav of the night was the angus skirt steak. It was DELICIOUS. Only item I wouldn't personally recommend was the queso flameado. Were used to the traditional Oaxaca cheese and this restaurant seemed to use a more generic type of white velveeta? (05/07) Came to this restaurant to celebrate my partner's graduating from UT Austin earlier that afternoon, and aesthetically this place was lovely! Everyone in our party of around 15 people ordered something different but I ordered the Chicken Enchiladas plate and my partner ordered the Pork Chop plate with a side of the rice. Their cilantro rice was just WOW! Unfortunately though, the rest of my enchiladas plate wasn't as spectacular.. the tortillas themselves were extremely hard and rough to chew on, making the entire experience just a jaw workout. My partner's pork chop was also overly charred, so all that they were tasting was burnt pieces of pork and not any of the actual meat. Everyone else's orders also came out pretty decent with nothing crazy to complain about, but if you are wanting to bring a party of more than like 8 people here, don't even think about it. They have a very inefficient system for water where they set a few pitchers/bottles across the table, and with any more than 8 people, those pitchers will run out every 10-15 minutes and you need to manually ask a waiter nearby to come and refill them or else it won't happen. Not the worst place I've been to but I probably would not come again unless they had some sort of happy hour special on their food. read more

Wow the space here is huge! You walk in and immediately notice all of the candle light and Mexican boho decor. They have a big bar area, covered patio, and tables of all sizes inside. They have the good comfy chairs too, this aint no De Nada. We even got a rack for our purses and jackets. It was a magnificent girls night, we got the margarita flights, the free chips and salsa were flowing, we also ordered the queso and some taco plates. The prices here are very reasonable. You couldn't mix and match the tacos for the plate but we ordered a few different kinds and shared. The al pastor tacos were pretty spicy, my friend had to return it and they switched it for her easily. Service was great, multiple people would check in on us and joke around with us. First time here and absolutely loved it! Our server was great at explaining everything on their menu and any questions we had. We had the ceviche and the shrimp appetizer which was good. The one that sold the show was the steak! The Angus Skirt Steak to be exact! The pure it had gave it soo much flavor, just amazing! The vibe there was lovely as well! Cute for photos!
