The food here should be great! Today, the chef was heavy handed on the salt. From the chips to the guacamole to the fajitas. Everything had been like double salted. We chose to eat outside, although it was a warm 95* day - (we are in Texas). The service today was very slow! They have plenty of waiting staff, so whether it's their system or the people, today they seemed to me to be slow. Wow the space here is huge! You walk in and immediately notice all of the candle light and Mexican boho decor. They have a big bar area, covered patio, and tables of all sizes inside. They have the good comfy chairs too, this aint no De Nada. We even got a rack for our purses and jackets. It was a magnificent girls night, we got the margarita flights, the free chips and salsa were flowing, we also ordered the queso and some taco plates. The prices here are very reasonable. You couldn't mix and match the tacos for the plate but we ordered a few different kinds and shared. The al pastor tacos were pretty spicy, my friend had to return it and they switched it for her easily. Service was great, multiple people would check in on us and joke around with us. (05/07) Came to this restaurant to celebrate my partner's graduating from UT Austin earlier that afternoon, and aesthetically this place was lovely! Everyone in our party of around 15 people ordered something different but I ordered the Chicken Enchiladas plate and my partner ordered the Pork Chop plate with a side of the rice. Their cilantro rice was just WOW! Unfortunately though, the rest of my enchiladas plate wasn't as spectacular.. the tortillas themselves were extremely hard and rough to chew on, making the entire experience just a jaw workout. My partner's pork chop was also overly charred, so all that they were tasting was burnt pieces of pork and not any of the actual meat. Everyone else's orders also came out pretty decent with nothing crazy to complain about, but if you are wanting to bring a party of more than like 8 people here, don't even think about it. They have a very inefficient system for water where they set a few pitchers/bottles across the table, and with any more than 8 people, those pitchers will run out every 10-15 minutes and you need to manually ask a waiter nearby to come and refill them or else it won't happen. Not the worst place I've been to but I probably would not come again unless they had some sort of happy hour special on their food. read more

What a amazing transformation this portion of the Domain has gone through. Mexican Sugar is just what was needed to mix up the options here at the domain. Gloria's does not compare. From the gorgeous interior decor to the vibrant food and drink. Whoever is the designer of this brand is doing a fantastic job of capturing the perfect atmosphere for the style of food and all around vibe. The patio is equally as impressive and has such a welcoming not your typical sterile feel most new restaurants in the domain have. The balance of the natural lighting during the day and interior lighting presents itself as soft and warm which makes you feel automatically comfortable while the drinking glasses and plates you notice while your being sat give off an elegant Mexican twist. This combination paired with the natural wood tables and modern leather seats with Mexican style tile really transports you to an authentic interior Mexico dining experience. The staff was cheerful and our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and what the Chef was trying to accomplish with his flavors. Our waiter Victor was such a pleasant and helpful person. He was more than happy to chat with us and give us great detail about anything we asked. The service was a tiny bit slow from the beginning we waited a while to be greeted after we where sat and our drinks took a long time to arrive but let's face it they are only a week in and I'm sure they will get used to a routine. Now for the important part, the food! We loved everything so let's get that out the way if that's all you want to know and yes we recommend coming here. We started with the Arepas which were good ,they did come cold I don't know if that's how they are supposed to be but the flavor was spot on and our toddler ate two of them. The Agua Fresca of the day was cucumber lime and man I could not get enough so refreshing. Then we tried the Elote it tasted just like a street corn but was lacking some acidity you usually get with lime so we added the limes from our cucumber drink and man after that it was perfect. The waiter did say they usually put lime with Tajin on it but he didn't know why ours didn't have it. Either way add the lime, you won't be disappointed. As for the main entree's I got the barbacoa Torta (lunch only item) which was delicious especially when I dipped it in the their habanero salsa. It comes with a hearts of palm salad which is so well balanced. My wife had the Mole enchiladas which I had a little bite of and can make the claim that they are delicious, just like home. Our meal ended with the cuatro leches cake yes not tres but cuatro! To our surprise for calling it cuatro leches we were expecting it to be soaked in four milks yet it was more like a coffee cake sitting in a table spoon of sweet cream so we asked for a side of extra "leches" to moisten it up. I am totally looking forward to returning and trying brunch and dinner eventually. I will say in my humble opinion Mexican Sugar is a must try for your next visit to the Domain. (Update we came for round 2 the service was ok still extremely slow my wife's Pozole was flavorless I mean literary had zero salt or anything flavor wise. The pozole was basically hot tomatillo or green chili blended with had water and boiled shredded chickened. Our Queso Flameado was so delicious and so were the tortillas that came with it. I ordered Tacos Al Pastor which would be a 10/10 either way but we're missing the Lime Crema I'm sure would have been delicious. The thing about this place is it's still working kinks out yet everything we order is missing an ingredient both visits we have had. Note to Chef and the line, photograph how all the dishes should be plated with ingredients listed and it might help get things in order at Expo. Because really Expo sees everything before it's sent out so there is no excuse for a well trained eye or whoever is works that area for food to be missing items.) Third time is the charm. read more

I think they need a few months to work out the kinks. Went there for a Saturday night dinner. Service was lacking and the food and drinks were was not as good as other locations. My husband's dish came out really early but my fajitas sat in the kitchen for a long time and arrived cold. Also, the meat in the fajitas had zero seasoning, it was the blandest thing I've ever been served in a restaurant. When I could finally flag down my server, she brought me a new side of meat on a plate, and that was nice, but I completely missed the experience of getting fajitas, it was just all served on a cold plate, and there was no sizzle at all like you usually get with fajitas. Even the veggies were cold and sparse and kind of bland. We would've ordered more drinks, but it was hard to get our server to notice us. She was really busy though. Also, it took a long time for the drinks to come out when we finally did put in an order. The restaurant has a really nice ambience. It would be a really great date spot if they can get the kitchen in order and the servers can be more attentive. After dinner, we sat at the bar to get another drink and while we were there, we could hear other people complaining that their food came out cold, including the lady next to me who sent her food back to the kitchen. The bar was really nice though, and the bartender made this cool volcano drink that had smoke coming out of it from wood chips. I asked about what kind of wood chips they were because they smelled good, and she said she didn't know but they bought them on Amazon. Sigh. So I think they need to train their staff better, all around, because all of these things really killed the vibe. We'd been to a Mexican Sugar near Dallas so many times and it was always stellar. If they're gonna charge that much for everything here, it should be a nicer experience. read more

Finally an option for some upscale margaritas on a patio in the Domain! Drinks and food were great and the price wasn't so jacked up just because of the location. Service was wonderful, but we also ordered drinks when ours were halfway through to give the bar time, as they were so busy. We came here on their second official day of opening. They already were running the place like a well oiled machine. I know usually when an establishment opens they put on their absolute best performance at first but I am optimistic the quality and performance from this place will remain one year, two year, five years into there existence. I am glad we have a location in Austin now. The food came out fast. The ambiance is really, really nice. Our server, Erica, was incredible. The food and drinks are freshly made. All tasted delicious. If I had to nitpick I guess I can say I wish the entree servings were a little bit more but that's just me nitpicking. I am a happy customer and I will be back for special occasions. I really wanted to like this spot and let me start by saying this place is beautiful but when we arrived we ordered our drinks, finished them and waited for about 15-20 mins for our waitress to come take our order so we asked a manager who was passing through if he could take our order.
