The secret is in the sauce!! That's how I gauge a good Italian restaurant. With that said, you won't be disappointed with Mezza Luna. Located in a nondescript strip mall anchored by Food Lion & an ABC store, Mezza Luna is a mom & pop restaurant opened by a wonderful couple from the Bronx who are there regularly to make sure things are just right. The shop is clean, brightly lit and welcoming. Vic is usually in the kitchen working his magic while Lucy handles the front of the house. First off, the pizza. If you like Sicilian pies and margherita pizza, you'd love the Grandma pie. It's a square pan pizza with mozzarella, dollops of amazingly delicious crushed tomato sauce & topped with grated cheese, EVOO & basil. This pie is our family obsession! The Vic's loaded pie was also very good! It was loaded with pepperoni, sausage, meatball (real sausage & real meatball slices...not those pizza chain nuggets), mushrooms, onion & pepper. Each slice was loaded with toppings! We've also tried their pastas on another occasion. Highly recommend the Angry Mussels if you like fra diavolo. It was deliciously briny & garlicky with a nice kick. Serving was very generous with lots of mussels. Each pasta we had was perfectly made. We stumbled across this little Italian restaurant off of 55 and had a very tasty lunch. Owners Lucy and Vic came to NC from New York and have roots in Napoli. They are very kind and hospitable and we loved their cheese pizza. The lunch special La two slices and a drink for $8. I thought there may be other lunch specials yet it was just the pizza. The other items are regular dinner prices and are in the $14-20 range for pasta or chicken. The restaurant is very clean and pictures of Mt. Vesuvio and Amalfi line the walls. WOW!! The name is deceiving. This place has some really really good Italian food. Pizza is to-die-for!!!! The best pizza I've had in this area. I've been living here for almost 18 years . Searching for a place in Apex that was open on Mondays was a chore. Came across Mezza Luna and saw the owners were Italian and had restaurants in NY and are now settled in Apex. We got dishes with the moon as those are their specialties. Mom in law got the baked zitti alla vic, hubbie got chicken mezza Luna and I got a bianca personal.pizza. we also got Mozzarella sticks and arancini di riso. Everything was delicious! The white wine sauce had the right amount of salt and tasted buttery to me... not to thin and not to thick. The sauce on the ziti was very good. My pizza was amazing and I added crumbled sausage. The pizza was so flavorful and fresh the garlic knots were seasoned so well. I would say this is one of the best pizzas I have had in the area. This prices are standard with other area pizzerias around. Sicilian Pizza was very dough, called to complain about it but they wouldn't believe it, took whole pizza back after they checked other dough were same, finally they replaced with another thin crust, addition i ordered specialty pizza Tipsy Chicken, chicken pieces were overly cooked, hard/chewy and pizza was not fresh at all, probably made couples hours back and they just reheated it. Mezza Luna is a new Italian spot that has opened in Apex about 5 minutes away from Beaver Creek Crossings. I placed an order over the phone for pickup on a Friday night and it was ready in 30 minutes. There is an option to dine in but the space isn't very large and tables are limited due to COVID-19. My husband and I split the Grandma Pie ($18) and Penne alla Vodka ($14). All of the pasta dishes and entrees are served with a salad and bread. All of the food was great but our favorite was the pizza. This place is definitely worth checking out. read more

I ordered food from Mezza Luna the other day. I called before heading over to pick it up, just to check on timing. They couldn't find my order at first until I said, "I ordered food, not pizza." "Oh, that explains it, one minute. [pause] It's being packed up right now, c'mon over." On my way over, I realized that may not have sounded right, implying pizza isn't food. But, you see, I grew up in a mostly Italian neighborhood in Brooklyn and my best friend's parents owned a local pizzeria. So, I grew up in that pizzeria helping out (bartering service for a lifetime of free food) and we always said "food" when we meant food from the kitchen instead of pizza or calzones from "the front." I planned to apologize for any unintended slight. I walk in and I'm hit in the face. I mean, not by an employee, or a customer, but by the smell. The smell of a pizzeria. A real pizzeria. So I approach the counter and I'm asked, "Is something wrong?" based on how I stopped dead in my tracks when I entered, "No, not wrong. Just the smell hit me, the smell of a real Brooklyn pizzeria." "BRONX," came the response. Okay Bronx. I started to apologize for saying food on the phone, but the response was, "Good thing you told me it was food, I was looking at pizza orders." So, lesson learned. Whether you're in the Bronx or Brooklyn, pizzerias smell the same and categorize the menu as food or pizza. And that's the point, I guess. When you walk into Mezza Luna Pizzeria, you might as well be walking into the Bronx. The smells, the accents, and most importantly, the food. It doesn't matter what I've ordered over the last year or two, pizza (which for a NYer implies just a cheese pizza); my wife's favorite Mahalo (Hawaiian with less vowels); my son's favorite chicken parm pizza, hero or plate with linguini; the fra diavolo; a generous sized caprese salad; or the cannelloni I had the other week on special: perfection. I'm a pizza fanatic and I make it a point to try every pizza joint I can find... Apex/Cary have so many options right now, and many of them are good. However, I'd written this location off years ago because I didn't like the quality of the previous restaurant. When I noticed that there was a new name on the building, Mezza Luna, I immediately pulled up all of these favorable reviews on Yelp... Normally I skip lunch, but I decided to give it a try right then and there. And man, I'm glad I did. I ordered the lunch special (2 slices with a drink) and a mini homemade cannoli. Let me tell you, my biggest pet peeve about pizza by the slice is that the bottom of the slice is usually soggy. Even some of my favorite pizza places suffer from this, and it's just something I've accepted over the years. Now I've only been here once, but the two slices I just finished eating had to be THE MOST PERFECTLY COOKED pizza by the slice that I've ever had. The crispness was consistent throughout the entire piece, but it wasn't too crispy - the softness of the dough inside was also perfect. While I did prefer my pepperoni slice to the plain cheese, they were both delicious and I can't wait to order a full pie with many more toppings. As for the homemade cannoli - It was also perfectly baked. No sogginess whatsoever, the filling was delicious, and they gave a healthy sprinkle of powdered sugar on top for good measure. We got a cheese and an olive pizza, buffalo wings and a salad. We we arrived to pick it up after 20 mins and everything was ready and easy to get. The pizza was literally classic NYC- great option for a simple no frills cheese pizza. This place was great! We were about to go down the road to another Italian restaurant but my mom suggested we go here. It was a pleasant surprise. The owner waited on us and when I asked what she prided herself on what she cooks it just so happened to be the dish I was looking at... bolognese with gnocchi. It was delicious! My son loved his pasta dish as well and he has quite the palate. We had a great time there. It was clean, quiet and smelled nice with all the pizzas they cook up. I saw at least 15 pizzas leave by way of take out while we were there. I can't comment on the pizza as I didn't taste it but it must be good with the amount of people picking them up. Tonight was my first time trying Mezza Luna. Since I was in the area grocery shopping, I stopped in to order a Stromboli so I could pick it up on my way home. The young lady at the counter told me it would be ready in about 30 minutes. I came back about 30 min later and was told it would be another 5 minutes. It's a Friday night so I get that they are busy. I finally got my order and when I got home I discovered I was given a calzone instead of the Stromboli I had ordered.
