I've been coming to this Mi Cocina location for over 15 years and I must say I'm impressed with how this restaurant location continuously evolves and creates such a unique dining experience. This is the best Mi Cocina in the nation and I can say that confidently because I've been to almost all of them except for 2. Any restaurant needs good leadership to thrive and managers like John Lozano there do a spectacular job and being attentive with guests and truly knowing his regulars. One particular thing to note about this location is the exclusivity feel. The standard of service. The commitment to your experience. Regarding the food, Mi Cocina has decided to modernize and start offering more health and environmentally conscious food options with the new Vegan menu options. I've tried all of them and they ARE SO GOOD. Eating cruelty free does not mean compromising flavor. Try the Black Bean enchiladas with extra red sauce. Wow. Try the Vegan black bean dip. Incredibly creamy and rich. If you're a first timer the juicy fajitas will melt your heart. Hopefully not literally. If you're in the mood for cocktails, head up the most iconic rooftop bar in Dallas in my opinion. Monkey Bar. Just come prepared and bring your A game. He told the bartender he was going to BRB to smoke a cigarette, they acknowledged, and my friend went outside. On his way back in, he was approached by management and security who claimed he was stealing and told him to leave. The once and future king of Tex-Mex! Mi Cocina is an absolute institution of one-of-a-kind Dallas Tex-Mex that has set the bar so very high that there's almost no point in reviewing it, especially this location in particular. There's a reason that there have been so many celebrity sightings here. And during the holidays when Highland Park Village is illuminated with its vast amount of lights, this is the place to be. It's quite simply, a Christmas tradition worth keeping. However, in recent years, with the pandemic bringing more of a focus to outdoor seating, as well as the addition of The Monkey Bar to the upstairs secret third floor, there has been provided more seating areas, yet the restaurant always seems so dreadfully understaffed. It's always a long wait to get a table here but their estimated forty-five minutes slowly turned into well over an hour. And to say that the particular waiter who waited on my table was flustered would've been a gross understatement. Orders were constantly wrong, drinks took forever to be brought out, not to mention every time he walked past he dropped some sort of silverware on the ground only to remain there until someone else would be bothered to pick it up. There was a general feeling of chaos that permeated the entire atmosphere of the night. On the flip side, the food & drink is outstanding as it has always been. The Mambo Taxi is their signature cocktail for a reason. The Nachos Mi Tierra might be my favorite meal of all time as I'm writing this and it has yet to disappoint me. Even the complimentary chips taste fresh out of the oven while their salsa has a unique zing to it. Despite my handful of complaints, it bears repeating that Mi Cocina is still the undisputed winner of first-rate Tex-Mex in my honest opinion. Our server was unkind and inattentive to our table. We had to ask other servers multiple times for things that we needed (water, chips, messed up or missing food, etc.). She was warm and chatty with other tables and servers in our vicinity, yet denied us any sense of that from the moment we sat down. Made a quick reservation for my friend and I. Took about 25-30 minutes to be called in. We sat down and had to wait 20 minutes before we were asked to order our drinks (which is normally done first thing as you sit down). Food was average. We didn't finish our dish (chicken fajitas). But worst: bartender was a power hungry guy (JP, I think was his name). For some random reason, he wound up not liking me and decided to tell me I couldn't have more drinks. He'd said that they have a 3-drink minimum, but the 3 people next to us were drinking up a storm-- shots coupled with lots of drinks. I was blindside. Even my friend and the woman we were talking to said, "what happened? I don't get it!" I actually thought he was joking because he said his manager would watch and so since I'd had 3 drinks (in two hours), he would get in trouble. I thought he was joking, so I had my buddy order a drink and, when the bartender walked away, I poured some of the drink into my cup. He saw that, came back, and poured out all everything. I gotta say, in 20 years of going to restaurants and bars, this is a first. Then, when I disagreed, the bartender said, "fuck you." lol!! I couldn't believe it. Friday, 9/18 take out experience: We order takeout every Friday from this location. Unfortunately we got charged full price for smaller than normal sized margaritas (see small styrofoam picture). They also forgot our corn tortillas for our two fajitas orders! It was busy, maybe they weren't staffed correctly to keep up with the busier Friday evening. I was a little on the fence about this place, but it IS indeed legit! The food is excellent, portion sizes are that to match Texas. You can get a full or a half. A lot of their dishes come with guacamole so be warned so you don't order too much guacamole. Has a decent view of the shops if you want to people watch or if it's too hot the inside is surprisingly large with up and down stairs. Although the food itself had no issues I am disappointed in the blatant disrespect my friend and I experienced. (We are both in our twenties, dressed casually but nothing not appropriate for a Tuesday afternoon at a Mexican Restaurant.) As soon as we walked in, I approached the receptionist and after a quick glance up and down, she looked to the group behind me to start interacting with them. To which I said, "My apologies, do we need a reservation?" and she said "Oh, no, just you two?" and I responded yes with a smile. She gestured us to a corner table and walked away, not one smile. After being sat down we were brought our waters and chips and said our "thank you's" and "yes please's" and still was met with an almost annoyed stare as if they knew we weren't going to leave them a good enough tip. I've never seen what I can only assume to be extreme judgement for an amount of money they do not know that I have. The same waitress would go from our table with minimal words and no smile, to the family next to us making small talk and jokes. I had to ask for water refills after no one coming over to us for long periods of time, all of which I said thank you and smiled. As much I hate to be the person to complain on yelp, I hate pretentious judgmental attitudes even more. What was supposed to be a quick stop for tex-mex while my friend was in town, turned into an embarrassing experience that made me question what our culture has turned into. The chips were gas though. Some doofus who may have been the manager - or maybe the owner - stood with his hands in his pockets talking to some friends at one table for 25 minutes, not noticing that everyone else in the section was looking around wondering if the entire wait staff had been sucked into a black hole. The reason for the 3 stars is that honestly, the service was horrible. It took forever for our food without explanation. Even our drinks and we literally sat right outside the bar in the corner. Took the wife there this past weekend. They sat us right away, and the waitstaff was very attentive. They re-filled my iced tea several times, and even gave us iced teas TO-GO when we were leaving. Mi Cocina is definitely at the top of my list. I love their salsa!!! Like it's pretty much an obsession, and there chips are always soo fresh and free lol. I've been many times, but this trip stood out from the rest. I ordered a margarita flight and I thought it would be a regular "single" drink. NOPE, I was given four mini glass cups filled with various margs!!! This was a dream. And they all tasted so good. Not to mention paired with the entree it was better than good. They have a RODENT PROBLEM!!! Im a regular came in on 3/8/23 and wanted to sit at the bar but service was bad there were two bartenders but they never came to our table, therefore we decided to sit in the dinning area so we moved. Shortly, after a couple walks in and the hostess walked them to a booth but they refused to sit bc they noticed rat poop on the table and chair they looked up and there was a HUGE HUGE RAT staring back they pointed at it and the whole restaurant went crazy. It was so disgusting no one knew what to do. The ceiling is high and black and the AC vents are all connected so it could off ran across or fallen onto tables. Some ppl walked out, management was no where in sight no one came to our table to apologize. No one knew what to do. We saw as they just cleaned the poop like nothing onto the floor from the table and chair. It was DISGUSTING! They have a huge rodent problem. They need to deep clean and sanitize the restaurant properly when I called the next day the manager didn't seem to care I told him what happened and he said it wasn't their fault.
