Drive all the way to Westminster for fried shrimp lo mein. I always get fried shrimp the lady knows me and knows my order already as soon as I walk in. Been coming here for over ten years! But today some older guy was working and when I ordered fried shrimp lo mein he said they didn't serve it. I was like um it's number 17? He says oh yes ok ok my friend! So I leave and come back and my order is ready to go. I take it and drive home ready to eat friend shrimp lo mein and this is what they gave me. The last last time I dined in there was a charred metal grate piece in my noodles. I got the Mi with wontons and bo vien. The wontons was pretty good, but I wish they gave me more! I probably only got 6 wontons. Bo vien is average. They taste like the ones you can just get at the supermarket and it was a little too hard. They gave me a lot of noodles! I wish they could've given me half the amount of noodles and more wontons. The thing I love most is the crispy, buttery Vietnamese bread that they give you to eat with the soup. I forgot what it's called, but it is soooo good ! They make it differently here. Wow! Came home after a quick trip and needed something broth like to settle our stomach and minds. We ordered (bare with me I'm only half asian): Xi What - These pork bones have little lovely meat scraps still attached that have been boiled in flavorful liquid for hours! and yes it's delicious with the hot mustard and chili flake oil combo! Duck - Bursting with flavor! a must have. Noodles - Cooked to perfect texture and complimented everything well. Broth - Great salty hearty quality to the taste and perfect balance of flavors all around. Chinese donuts - I've had it better at other places but when you eat it together with everything above it was serious goodness. Poor Quality Food Now, Owner very Rude This has always been my favorite place to eat for years and my family knows the father who use to be the chef. They recently lost their chef and the younger female owner is cooking the food now. The food now tastes bland, unflavored, completely different, even down to the vinegar soaked papaya. The silverware was not washed well and filthy dirty.  When we politely asked her why the food changed, she got upset and said to go somewhere else if we don't like the food, she could care less and there were plenty of other restaurants we could go instead. She stood in the middle of her restaurant screaming and wailing her arms like a mad woman in front of all the customers. This was such a shock and unacceptable behavior for a business open to service customers. It is obvious she doesn't care about her customers nor take pride in her cooking, and it definitely shows. It's a shame because now the legacy of this restaurant will not continue through her management. read more

See, the thing is I don't like mi, which is a reason why I never thought to eat at this place, until someone told me that they also sell hu tieu. I got the dac biet hu tieu kho, for only...wait for it....$5.10!! So cheap! That alone gave it extra points in my wallet. The food was just okay, nothing is special but one thing you all should be careful this place is: always over charge you for $1 or couples of dollars every single bill, think of 500 customer a day so how much will they earn from cheated the customer. I only come here for their duckling soup. The broth itself is just so comforting, even on a scorching hot day. The duck itself is okay... a little dry. I love how at the bottom on their soup there are these bits of fried onion, fried scallion... something fried, and its so delicious. I usually don't order drinks here, but on my last visit, I ordered their Ca Phe Sua Da (Vietnamese Iced Coffee with milk) and it was not that delicious. Should of just gone to Lee's for that. My Favorite is the Mi Vit Guay. (BBQ Duck with noodles). It does depend on when you go bc sometimes the Duck doesn't have much meat, but normally it's always great and meaty. I always get a big bowl of boiled & simmered meat...I don't know how to spell it but you would pronounce it as "See wat". lol (I know...me and my Vietnamese) It's the meat that they would have to cook for hours to draw out all the wonderful flavors used in all the bases of the soups you get here! Superb noodle place. Hole in a wall. Place looks old and dated. Super dated.... but our food was really good. And lunch for 2 was 14 dollars.. you can't find another place that serves lunch for two for less than 20 dollars anywhere these days.. But we didn't come back for the price, it has always been the noodle. The texture of the egg noodles was done right, not under or over cooked. True authentic Chinese egg noodles. One of the places I go to for a delicious bowl of duck noodle soup with chinese donuts! This is the only place I know of that does this (looking for more as the price rose a bit). But I love it! The soup is delicious and might have a little bit of MSG for taste, but I don't mind it. The noodles are a little more tender than other pho places which I love. PLEASE TELL ME THIS PLACE HAS BEEN REMODELED... ....It's been awhile since I have actually sat down and ate here...I usually have family members get it to-go for me and bring it home. So I'm not really sure what the place looks like now...kinda scared to actually. The utensils were not washed properly at all...you can still see some stains and watermarks here and there on the spoons | chopsticks | forks. YUCK ! AND the tables were quickly wiped down...leaving away some leftovers from the last party. YUCKIERRR ! AND EVEN WORSE (this part makes me so sad)...they actually allow homeless | needy | handicapped ppl come in and loiter their customers. And I would feel HELLA bad when I rejected the products they sold | loitered. Anyways, the food here is always good. Yeah it's a bit oily but HEY that's Asian food for you ! I love love love their Mi Seafood Combo (eggs, shrimp, pork, mussels, squid..and more). The broth is just about right...it's not too salty and not too bland. All the toppings and fillings are delicious. I haven't really tried their other bowls because I usually stick to what I usually get | like...but I'm sure the others are just as good as the Mi Seafood. The price here is always cheap...nothing is ever over-priced.. Parking here is a bitch due to the supermarket that's located 10 feet down from the restaurant. Service here is ehh whatever. I ordered the BBQ pork mi kho which were dry egg noodles with some oyster sauce, slices of BBQ pork and some lettuce. A bowl of soup was also given to me which my wife said to use to loosen up the noodles which were all in one lump. There was oyster sauce in the noodles and the soup also helped mix the sauce into the rest of the noodles so you didn't get one mouthful with lots of sauce and another with nothing. I found the BBQ pork very flavorful. It was actually some of the best BBQ pork I've ever eaten and it didn't have that fluorescent red color to it. My wife said they didn't use food coloring which really makes no difference to me if the flavor it good, which it was. read more

This actually should be 3.5 stars, but the nostalgia associated with this joint is what pushes it up to 4 stars. My family has been going here for almost 20 friggin years! Nowadays when I walk in, the middle aged lady waitress will still hand us the menus but will ask me if I want the same and I will invariably nod and say - yeap! Maybe it's a kind reminder that the prices have gone up a whole seventy five cents since 1985. Their specialty is the mi dau hao, oyster sauce flavored egg noodle with cha siu, fried battered shrimp, and chicken. Top it off with some greens (chives and lettuce) for a rounded meal in one bowl. You can have the noodles with the broth (nuoc = water/broth, to order say "mi nuoc") or have the broth on the side(kho = dry, if you want to order say "mi kho dau hao"). Most people have the broth set on the side as the oyster flavor is more intense that way. The noodles have a bite to them and are never overcooked. Mix in some red or black vinegar along with sate chili sauce for a kick and your taste buds will start doing the boogie soon enough. Unlike other people, my staple here is actually the chow fun. I don't normally order the chow fun in most chinese restaurants because it simply is too greasy, but here they make it a bit different. The thick rice noodles are warm and a bit charred on the ends, not quite crunchy ,but just a bit crispy from the "wok breathe" so you get that smoky aroma coming through. The noodles are then doused with a gravy topping similar to what you would get with a Rad Na in thai restaurants, except here the gravy contains chucks of shrimp, calamari, chicken, shitake mushrooms, baby corn (canned but still passable), and napa cabbage. The seasoning is just right, not too salty or sweet like many of the other noodle places. They'll make it with any number of toppings that you want, you just need to ask. I normally get their combination meat and seafood one as mentioned above. It's hard to rate this place because it's kinda close to my heart, but it's definitely worth a try if you are looking for a good solid bowl of noodle that is packed with intense flavors and isn't to heavily loaded with MSG. If this is your first time opt for the "dry" noodles with broth on the side as most die hards who have been coming to this place forever swear by it. Check out the chow fun if you want to try something that is a bit different from the normal grease laden stuff that you get at the other chinese restaurants. (Note: they have a couple of different branches now throughout little saigon, but this one was the original, and also the least heavy handed when it comes to MSG) read more

We have been eating at different Mi La Cay restaurants for over 30 years, including this location since it opened in 1987. The food is really good and it is authentic, unlike many of the newer establishments in the Little Saigon District. We usually order hu tieu, mi kho, and the fried rice. Some of the younger reviewers on here complaining about how the mi kho "dry noodles" are greasy or that the the place isn't nice have no idea what authentic food is. They should stick to trendier crayfish places or Lee's Sandwiches. That is like comparing a taqueria to Chipotle lol. read more

I cannot hate on Mi La Cay, we have been coming here since I was a kid in the late 80's. It was our weekend spot. After piano classes a few doors down, we would get noodles, after going to temple we would stop by here to get noodles, etc. Even when I moved out of state I would make it a point to come here. Now that my whole family lives in Seattle, we still make it a point to come to Mi La Cay when we are in town visiting. The food and prices are still the same, I usually get the mi kho dac biet or the mi kho tom chien. Something about their breaded fried shrimp that I love. Their broth is still salty and kicking w/ MSG, but somehow it tastes good. Also can't go wrong with their dried noodles (mi kho) with squirts of hot mustard. As a kid I didn't care for it much, but as I grew up and my palate developed, I love it with now. Love the chewy noodle texture, tasty food, it may not be the prettiest of places, but the food speaks for itself. The owner has been here forever and she's one of the nicest people as well. Had their duck combo noodles. It was very salty and oily for me. This is a soup place and so most of the soups would be using the same base broth. The difference is in what meats or condiments you want in it. So it would all be too salty for me. Service = Little Saigon rude English = some broken English here or there, but mostly forget about it Ambience = slow, quiet, and on the dirty, filthy side Prices = cheap I didn't even want to rate this place because I didn't enjoy their salty food. However, I left my expensive prescription glasses there. We were the only customers. Couple of days later I called about them. They gave me the run around...they had it but no longer see it..waiter had it...call back...you picked up already. ..call again..we don't have it..what glasses...we don't know...we saw it...not sure...this went on for a week. If you have to eat there, don't trust that they won't swipe your stuff, especially expensive stuff. Used to always eat here growing up when my parents had to go grocery shopping at ABC. Now I'm only here occasionally since the plaza gets ridiculously crowded with terrible drivers. Food: I always get the Mi Ga Quay kho, always will unless for some reason they remove it from their menu. It's essentially noodles with a fried chicken quarter with the broth on the side. If I'm really hungry then I'll also get the Chinese donuts to dip as well. It's always good, pretty hard to go wrong with fried anything. Haven't really tried anything else on the menu. I do remember getting the wonton noodles once but don't remember it fondly. Service: The usual Viet Restaurant service where they forget about you once you've gotten your food; if you need them again its always a mission to get their attention. You pretty much seat yourself once you enter unless you have a big party. Menus are located underneath the glass on the table which I find extremely conveniently. Location: Inside the huge ABC Supermarket plaza with plenty of other stores and restaurants. There are a lot of parking spaces but it also gets really crowded so you can end up parking really far.
