Was really looking forward to this place, however I was quite disappointed in their pho. To be fair, they specialize in sautéed noodles (hence their name), which I also tried and it was much better than the pho. Their London Broil pho, they don't use traditional pho rice noodle. Look and texture were more like pad Thai noodles. They didn't soak up any flavor from the broth. Speaking of the broth, I don't believe this to be bone broth. Very little hint of natural fats, and had no complexity in it at all. Unsure why it is called London Broil, as that is a cooking method that involves marinaded beef. The meat definitely was not marinaded... however, the cut is most likely an eye of round or something along those lines (round). Their tofu and rice dish was good. Some of the choices of veggies are funny but the tofu were PERFECTLY fried and seasoned. Very saucy (I prefer less sauce), but it still maintained its "bite". Very good tofu. Stir fry noodle dish was good as well. After all, that's why they named their place after it right?? Owner was extremely nice and sweet. But overall I feel it currently sits at 3 stars, though I understand it's a local favorite based on their high reviews. Some of the short comings were how people who has never been here before is greeted. We didn't know that we grab menus from the front counter, seat ourselves, then head to counter to order and pay, etc. Some guidance would have been helpful. Also, eating in.. having our water refilled is a bit of a inconvenience since we'd have to head to the counter and bother the worker to refill out small cup (I'm guessing it is a 12oz cup). He was very nice about it but still, I hate bothering workers for something so minute. read more

This restaurant is a great place for food and drinks. We came here for lunch on The weekend and had a great experience. We had two boys under the age of four with us and sat outside, they were very welcoming, do you order at the bar and they bring you food afterwards. I had a couple too many pumpkin beers last night, so I needed to shock my system back into coherence with some salty broth and noodles. Heading down 17 I stopped in here before making it into Charleston. I read reviews stating the London Broil pho was to die for, and since I felt like dying, I figured I would give it a go. It was a tasty dish. The meat was nice and tender and the broth was pretty flavorful too. I added some of the fresh basil and a bit of Siracha to set it off. It wasn't too salty and had plenty of noodles. The bowl was huge! I'm guessing it was easily 5 gallons worth of food. A good bowl of pho. I was a little disappointed that my food didn't come out as fast as other people: mine took forever, probably 4 minutes or something. It's only my second time, but I prefer the place in North Charleston slightly over this one. read more

Then after making additions to his pot he used the ladle to taste it to his lips again another three times returning it to the pot after each slurp! This is the 2nd Vietnamese place I have tried since I've been in Charleston. There were some good and not so good points to this place. There are only a few tables inside, so space was limited. Their kitchen was an open layout, so you will see everything they were doing. The front guy was pretty nice and friendly. Being able to talk to him in Vietnamese was a plus. He had a smile on his face when he found out I could speak to him in his native tongue. Their menu was small. There wasn't much to choose from. For the pho, it was either beef or chicken. I ordered the pho bo (London Broil). It came with rectangular noodles and only the tai meat. The broth was really tasty. I can say that it was authentic and flavorful. The noodles, however, weren't. Real pho noodles are round, but these were rectangular. Because they were rectangular, they didn't taste as well. The tai meat was nice and tender. I wish they had more pieces of the cow, but the rest of the pieces wouldn't fair too well with the locals. With every meal, they gave Asian sweet tea, which was nice. I also got to try the spring rolls. They were pre-made. Nothing special to them except that they were small. The rolls, as well as the vegetables they gave came in a togo box that was open instead of a normal plate. As least for the broth, I would come back here for it, but I'll still try other places to find the pho place I like. What I really need to do is start to cook it myself. read more

Well my own mental map displays a picture of the Pork Noodle Salad whenever I'm within a 3-mile radius of this area. As far as I'm concerned, it's the only menu item. (Though, admittedly, all the other dishes I see coming from the kitchen look just as delectable.) Cold noodles and greens, topped with hot Vietnamese-spiced pork, crunchy bits of flavor, and fresh herbs. Absolutely delicious, fresh food. We got the shrimp tom yum, lemongrass chicken, and shrimp papaya salad. Protein was *plentiful* in all of the dishes. Everything was delicious. The portion size was enough to feed the two of us for lunch and dinner (granted we bought three entrees because I'm a fatty). Surprisingly, I would say that the side salad that came with the lemongrass chicken was the surprise black horse of the meal. It was so fresh and herbaceous! There is just something special about the salad dressing that I can't quite put my finger on. Best Pho Ive had in a while. Inexpensive and delish. Broth steeped for hours and hours and special attention to cleanliness. Broth you so fresh with a deep and sultry taste. If you order the pho, you can't beat the speed of service! I think I got my dish in less than 2 minutes, piping hot. Would have been great except my husband's bahn mi came 10 min later. The pho is pretty solid and had good flavor. I ordered the London Broil, which wasn't out of this world, but satisfied my pho craving! My husband's bahn mi was good, too. It was a bit different than others we've tried: this one was heavy on bbq sauce, light on coriander, cucumber, and pickled carrots. It was huge, though, and he enjoyed it. I love making the arduous trip from the real Mt Pleasant all the way to Rt 41 just to eat some really good Pho at Mi Xao. It's a hole the wall located in a very busy outdoor shopping center but don't let the decor fool you - the food is excellent and it's affordable (two things I like) compared to downtown. They had me when I walked up and on the glass it said, "wok in, wok out!" Such an EASY place to go eat. You know what I mean...there's no "scene", no attitude when you walk in, bleary eyes from your day with a very, very cranky teething Pax Man. Give me pho, fo sho. I actually ended up getting noodles but I had to make that joke. I got the rice noodles with steak and the house sauce. The vegetables were PLENTIFUL. I actually could have used a teeny bit more noodles but I appreciate that they did not skimp on the produce, as it was fresh and crunchy in every bite. The steak was essential ground and interesting - no chewy steak here. The house sauce was a delightful blend of spice, salt, and sweet. Big fan. The summer rolls were excellent, excellent with a spicy peanut dipping sauce. So good. Only thing I positively hated was the edamame. They should probably take that off the menu. Yucky. So, you're given everything in to go boxes. You order at the counter. They DO have beer and wine so I shall be quickly changing whoever initially incorrectly put no booze. We rolled in with a bottle of white and their employee said it was no problem for us to bring it in. He even took a good amount of time shining two VERY serious white wine glasses. There wasn't a spot on them. I thought it was just a nice gesture to make sure we had proper stemware for our $5.99 bottle of Chardonnay. Overall, the service was so enjoyable. Let me preface this by saying that I'm Vietnamese and grew up in a large metropolitan area (i.e., I'm picky because the bar was set high from a very early age). Mi Xao is definitely on my list of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Chucktown. I rated it 3 out of 5 stars for the reasons below. Goi Cuon: Missing pork belly, but the Tuong (peanut dipping sauce) wasn't bad. Not too sweet. Some people like to include green onions as well, though I'm partial to it being done without them so I didn't miss it. The ingredients seemed fresh. Bun Thit Nuong: The meat was flavorful and cooked well, though it would benefit from a charcoal grill (just personal taste). The presentation and sauce were awful though. It's a noodle dish that should be presented in a bowl, with the layer of lettuce, herbs, sprouts, at the bottom, then the rice noodles, then the meat and topped with whatever final touches you like (fried onions, peanuts, etc.). It's a dish that you douse with Nuoc Mam so you need a bowl to contain all that sauce. Mi Xao presents the dish on a plate. Very hard to eat with chop sticks. To make matters worse, they use imitation lime juice (!!!) in their Nuoc Mam. I would rather they have used regular white vinegar than to have tasted the imitation juice. Not good. There is a competitor in Charleston that does this dish better. Bo Luc Lac: The flavor profile on this was good and the meat was well cooked (not rubbery). The dish would have benefited from rice being served on the side though. The dish was served with a fair amount of sauce and we were left with soggy, over salted rice at the end. Mi Xao with egg noodles and chicken: ICYWW, Mi Xao is traditionally done with egg noodles. This dish was also okay. It would have benefited from a little more time on the noodles (tip: after they're done cooking, toss in sesame oil -- they soak up the flavor and it makes them UBER delicious without all that greasiness) and a little more flavor on the accompaniments. The chicken was a little lack luster. I'm being a little picky here though. Considering this is a place where I can get my order in about 15 minutes, I'm happy to deal with the small issues. My main problem is the Nuoc Mam. That's easily resolved with some fresher ingredients. I'll be back for quick Asian take out. read more

So happy we finally decided to try this place. We live across the street and decided tonight was the night. We picked up one green curry stir fry shrimp. So flavorful! We got the egg noodles with it. Size is perfect for one person. I'd advise getting an appetizer though if you are very hungry. However the flavor is amazing. We will be back A LOT. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. I've been coming here for months and it's one of those places that I start to crave if I go too long without it. There's not much to add that hasn't already been mentioned. So here are my brief thoughts: I prefer the shrimp pho over the beef (I still need to try the chicken). It's super spicy! The dumplings are just ok. The spring rolls with the peanut sauce are pretty good but I recently tried the fried rolls and ohmygosh. I have no idea what that dipping sauce is but it's divine. I also like trying all the different combos of stir-fry. The lemongrass is tasty but I just tried the coconut and green curry chicken with rice noodles and it might be my new fav. I also immensely enjoy the jasmine iced tea. So freaking good. And if I'm in the mood, I'll also throw in some coconut juice. Besides the food being amazing, they're so friendly there. I'm not sure if they all remember me by now but even if they don't, I feel like they do. On multiple occasions one of the guys insisted on taking my food out to my car for me.
