They had me when I walked up and on the glass it said, "wok in, wok out!" Such an EASY place to go eat. You know what I mean...there's no "scene", no attitude when you walk in, bleary eyes from your day with a very, very cranky teething Pax Man. Give me pho, fo sho. I actually ended up getting noodles but I had to make that joke. I got the rice noodles with steak and the house sauce. The vegetables were PLENTIFUL. I actually could have used a teeny bit more noodles but I appreciate that they did not skimp on the produce, as it was fresh and crunchy in every bite. The steak was essential ground and interesting - no chewy steak here. The house sauce was a delightful blend of spice, salt, and sweet. Big fan. The summer rolls were excellent, excellent with a spicy peanut dipping sauce. So good. Only thing I positively hated was the edamame. They should probably take that off the menu. Yucky. So, you're given everything in to go boxes. You order at the counter. They DO have beer and wine so I shall be quickly changing whoever initially incorrectly put no booze. We rolled in with a bottle of white and their employee said it was no problem for us to bring it in. He even took a good amount of time shining two VERY serious white wine glasses. There wasn't a spot on them. I thought it was just a nice gesture to make sure we had proper stemware for our $5.99 bottle of Chardonnay. Overall, the service was so enjoyable. Anywho, can't wait to go back and get some pho. And I'll be thinking about you, summer rolls. read more

A must on a Thursday. Had their Vietnamese chicken sandwich with lemongrass. It's like a circus in your mouth when you add the hot sauce. The pork is great too. Served with fries or salad. They only do the sandwiches on Thursdays though. Service and prices are great too. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I'm Vietnamese and grew up in a large metropolitan area (i.e., I'm picky because the bar was set high from a very early age). Mi Xao is definitely on my list of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Chucktown. I rated it 3 out of 5 stars for the reasons below. Goi Cuon: Missing pork belly, but the Tuong (peanut dipping sauce) wasn't bad. Not too sweet. Some people like to include green onions as well, though I'm partial to it being done without them so I didn't miss it. The ingredients seemed fresh. Bun Thit Nuong: The meat was flavorful and cooked well, though it would benefit from a charcoal grill (just personal taste). The presentation and sauce were awful though. It's a noodle dish that should be presented in a bowl, with the layer of lettuce, herbs, sprouts, at the bottom, then the rice noodles, then the meat and topped with whatever final touches you like (fried onions, peanuts, etc.). It's a dish that you douse with Nuoc Mam so you need a bowl to contain all that sauce. Mi Xao presents the dish on a plate. Very hard to eat with chop sticks. To make matters worse, they use imitation lime juice (!!!) in their Nuoc Mam. I would rather they have used regular white vinegar than to have tasted the imitation juice. Not good. There is a competitor in Charleston that does this dish better. Bo Luc Lac: The flavor profile on this was good and the meat was well cooked (not rubbery). The dish would have benefited from rice being served on the side though. The dish was served with a fair amount of sauce and we were left with soggy, over salted rice at the end. Mi Xao with egg noodles and chicken: ICYWW, Mi Xao is traditionally done with egg noodles. This dish was also okay. It would have benefited from a little more time on the noodles (tip: after they're done cooking, toss in sesame oil -- they soak up the flavor and it makes them UBER delicious without all that greasiness) and a little more flavor on the accompaniments. The chicken was a little lack luster. I'm being a little picky here though. Considering this is a place where I can get my order in about 15 minutes, I'm happy to deal with the small issues. My main problem is the Nuoc Mam. That's easily resolved with some fresher ingredients. I'll be back for quick Asian take out. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. I've been coming here for months and it's one of those places that I start to crave if I go too long without it. There's not much to add that hasn't already been mentioned. So here are my brief thoughts: I prefer the shrimp pho over the beef (I still need to try the chicken). It's super spicy! The dumplings are just ok. The spring rolls with the peanut sauce are pretty good but I recently tried the fried rolls and ohmygosh. I have no idea what that dipping sauce is but it's divine. I also like trying all the different combos of stir-fry. The lemongrass is tasty but I just tried the coconut and green curry chicken with rice noodles and it might be my new fav. I also immensely enjoy the jasmine iced tea. So freaking good. And if I'm in the mood, I'll also throw in some coconut juice. Besides the food being amazing, they're so friendly there. I'm not sure if they all remember me by now but even if they don't, I feel like they do. On multiple occasions one of the guys insisted on taking my food out to my car for me. Excellent Vietnamese food in this area! I'm a Vietnamese who visited SC for 4 days and was fortunate for find this gem restaurant. Definitely 5 stars. The food quality is authentic and made with care. The owner/chef makes sure to get the most fresh ingredients possible and he makes the broth with bones for many hours to create the most favorful soup broths I've ever had. I ordered the Bún Bò Hue, a special that day. Bún Bò Hue is a beef noodle soup from Central Vietnam and is a very tricky dish to make. Even as a resident in Southern California with no few options for Vietnamese restaurants, I found that it is usually a risky move to order Bún Bò Hue, as I have yet to find a restaurant that serve really authentic Bún Bò Hue. Then I came to Mt Pleasant and was pleased to eat excellent Bún Bò. The broth was subtly aromatic with wafts of lemongrass fragrance. The meat (pork and beef) was generously served and cooked to tenderness. Side veggies such as bean sprouts, cilantro, onions, mints accompanied this bowl of heaven and made for a healthy combo. I'm still drooling as I write this review! Other dishes I have tried are all excellent also: bún thit nuong, wonton soup, com gà, and mì quang. These dishes are on the regular menu. Bún thit nuong is topped with delicious grilled meat and fried spring rolls. You should add the fish sauce mixed with lime to this bowl and mix them all together. Add a little bit at first to see how strong you want the sauce to be. The result is a sophisticated mix of flavors and textures in one bowl - the crunchiness of spring rolls, softness of noodles threads, cooling sensation of cucumber slices, sweetness of bean sprouts, etc. Definitely try this dish. You won't regret! Com gà is very simple, rice with chicken and veggies. What makes this chicken rice different is that the chicken was marinated with lemongrass and pepper so it is highly aromatic. The meat was seasoned to perfection so you wouldn't need to add any sauce to this delicious plate, but for those spicy food lovers you could always add some sriracha to satisfy your taste buds. Mì quang is dried noodles with a hint of curry flavor. The curry is very subtle that even for those not-so-big-fan of curry (of which I am a member!), I would encourage you to try this dish. Here again I find a delicate balance of flavors typical of good Vietnamese cuisine. Wonton soup might have the most simple taste out of all the dishes I tried but still won me over for its delicious wonton balls. The portion is very big and it is also served with healthy veggies. Came here a couple times based on the yelp reviews and I wasn't disappointed. So far I have had the London Broil Pho and the Beef Stir Fry with the house sauce. If you stop in, try the spring rolls as an appetizer. They were a great addition to the meal. The restaurant is small and probably better suited for take-out. Both times I have been, it wasn't too busy and I was able to have a seat at a table. However, I could see it filling up quickly during peak times. The service was good overall and the food was prepared quickly. With as much as I enjoyed my first two trips, I can guarantee I will return again. read more

Excellent Vietnamese food. We ate here for the first time and the food was great. The staff is very friendly, especially the owner and his wife. We had summer spring rolls, edamame, steamed dumplings and five-spice french fries as appetizers. For meals, we had Mi Xao stir fry and the beef tip stir fry. Both were excellent. We are still raving about the food. The place is a little small and caters to take out but their are a few tables inside and the friendly staff makes up for the lack of space. Try the jasmine tea, its delish... I highly recommend this place as a change of pace. read more

I had the pleasure of trying this for first time today. I popped in for a quick lunch with a friend. You can smell how savory this place is just walking up to the front door. I had the London Broil pho and it was on point! First of all, my order was ready in all of 3 minutes, making this a must try even for a quick lunch break. The broth was bursting with flavor, noodles cooked to perfection, and tender beef, with veggies on side to add to your liking. The owner was so kind and immediately asked if it was my first visit. He came and checked on us when the food came out, and made sure we were still good as we were finishing our dishes. He obviously took great pride in his cooking and wanted to be sure our visit was amazing. I can't wait to return and try more! Go and enjoy ASAP! read more

This place was very, very close to getting five stars, but more on that later. Like Meghan C. said, Mi Xao is a very easy place to go eat. The people that work there are laid back, and will explain the menu to you, if you've never been to a Pho or Vietnamese restaurant before. There are only about five tables in the whole place, but several people were in and out for take-out, so I have to assume that their take-out business is more popular than their dine in, but there were two other couples sitting down, so I didn't feel like we were the only ones there. Anyway, we ordered the summer rolls, edamame, and I had the egg noodles with shrimp and the house sauce. The summer rolls were amazing, with a great sweet peanut sauce. Even though I'm not a sweet person, I loved it, and used it on every bite (Meghan doesn't mind if I double dip). They had a good amount of shrimp in them, along with veggies, and my favorite herb, cilantro. The noodles were great, and it was a huge portion! They were perfectly done, with a great sauce, which was a tad spicy, and a tad sweet, but needed a bit of soy sauce to liven it up. I think they give you like nine fairly large shrimp, and a metric shit-ton of veggies. I could have used some more spice in mine, and although they have Sriracha on the table, I'm not a big fan. Next time, I'll order this with a bit of chili flake in it to spice it up. The only thing that I was dissatisfied with was the edamame. They were woefully overcooked, like they'd been parboiled earlier in the day, and just heated up before they were brought to the table, but in this case, it seems like both cooking cycles were complete, and they were, frankly, bad. I'll go back to Mi Xao again, definitely, but I won't order the edamame. So, that's why I dropped them to four stars, but otherwise, they'd have been a big, gleaming five! read more

The PHO!!!!!!!!! Oh my lord I cant get past it. I want to try everything on the menu but the London Broil is the only thing I ever get because it's that good. Definitely the best Pho Ive had in Charleston. I managed to try the dumplings as a warm up to my Pho and they were also extremely tasty. The sauce they have with the dumplings is some of the best Ive had. Geez I am so happy I found a solid Pho place in Charleston. Nonsensically delicious food. And honestly, there's no better value/quality/quantity trinity in town. That's a fact. And better still, the food is certifiably authentic. The pad Thai is my go to. We had the steamed dumplings, summer rolls, london broil pho, and stirfry veggies with red curry and enjoyed all three. Food is fresh and light. The side of thai basil, bean sprouts, and jalepenos (sliced thin and deseeded) were the perfect crunch and heat to the Pho. The only thing I would say that would even be close to a negative is that everything is served in to go boxes (other than the soup that is) which seems a little odd when eating in. They do make it clear that they are the "neighborhood Vietnamese takeout" so I guess that's why...just hated to see a filled the the top trash receptacle stuffed with styrofoam boxes I guess. A great find for me having starting working in Mount Pleasant, coming from North Charleston. Their Ginger beef Pho is tasty! The broth is distinct from the Pho places in North Charleston. This comes with the obligatory Pho sides. Thursdays they do Bahn Mi combos, which are on point for the price point. My only complaint is that I like more toppings on my Bahn Mi. read more

What the Pho?! Amazing, astounding and just simply tasty from first spoonful to the last tip of the bowl.

This place hit the spot for my pho fix, but I'm hoping to find somewhere closer to Hanahan! That being said, I'd go back here on my way to Georgetown/Myrtle Beach, as it's right on 41 off of 17, and worth the stop. I chose steamed dumplings for the group I ate with and the London Broil pho for my entree. Both were great! The meat was cooked perfectly in the pho, which was a big YAY in my book because you never know how it can go at a new Vietnamese place. These folks must do a ton of take-out and rightfully so, the menu is worth perusing. I'm going back for the chicken soup, which had a delicious curried chicken broth that I'm betting they can spice up for me. I also want to try the pancit and the Banh Mi sandwiches. Great little hole in the wall restaurant. You order & pay before you sit down, then bus your own table after you're done eating. Quick & friendly service. I got the chicken pho and it was amazing! This isn't a great place for larger parties cuz it is small & lots of people seem to be going in and out. Definitely will be back to try the lemongrass chicken. read more
