This place is a nice little hidden gem, just a minute off the northway at exit 18. I've tried a slice, takeout pizza, cold subs, and the hot chicken parm all within the last few weeks. All were incredibly good. The crust on the pizza is thin with a nice chew; the bread on the subs is homemade and crusty and soft; the chicken in the parm sub is grilled and not breaded. I would prefer more chicken in there, but they might have a double meat option. Rare to find pizza by the slice in the north country, and it's excellent. I struggled to find a menu online so I've posted one from July 2024.

This is a chef salad with an impressive amount of blue cheese dressing.

I've had a lot of good and bad restaurant experiences but I don't write reviews unless it's exceptionally good or bad. I'm sad to have to write this review, but the owners actions today left me regretting every penny I've ever spent here. Today I ordered a large cheese pizza, a dozen wings with blue cheese, stuffed shells, 2 cannolis and 2 sides of blue cheese (in that order). The girl taking the order kept asking me to repeat what I said after each item was mentioned. When I was finished, I asked her to repeat the order back to me to make sure she got everything. She rattled off everything so fast I couldn't keep up. I figured she got everything, sense she asked to repeat everything at least twice. When the food got here there was a chef salad I didn't order and the stuffed shells were missing. Everything else was there. I called the restaurant and politely informed the girl who took my order that there was a mistake. I thought they may have given me someone elses food and maybe they had my shells at the restaurant. She put the owner on the phone who immediately became defensive and rude. At this point I realized the girl who took my order thought I said "chef salad" instead of "stuffed shells." It's not her fault she couldn't hear the order, but I would have caught the mistake if she had asked what dressing I wanted with the salad, but she never did.. which is weird because once we realized we were stuck with the salad my boyfriend opened it and it was literally drowning in blue cheese (as seen in the picture). Anyway, she got the owner on the phone and after I explained the situation he became short, rude and implied that this was my fault. There was no "I'm sorry for the miscommunication." No apology at all. I was surprised and caught off guard by his behavior. I get that times are hard right now but damn.. I've spent well over $1000 at MIA pizza and recommend this place ALL the time. I work in a restaurant too and when people ask me what's a good pizza in the area I always recommended MIA. I've convinced at least dozen people to try it. Because of his actions today I will never order from here or recommend this place again.

Meatball appetizer, big and rich in flavor with meatballs not too soft or hard. Great with warm bread that was provided. Main course was beyond big and easily two meals on each platting. Chicken parm was tender and nicely seasoned with pasta side. I had a special of peppers and onions in a spicy red sauce with crumbled sausage and bucatini as the pasta. It was cooked well and had a nice warm spice, but not over powering heat, easily two meals. Drink prices were market priced with a wine $ 8.00 for a good pour. Server was personable and attentive throughout our visit. It would appear the kitchen is small and staffed accordingly. I hear they limit take out orders when very busy and best to call ahead for complete info on a weekend. Overall great experience and will visit again.

This building was formerly The Open Door Mission (now on Warren Street). Staying in the area over the weekend, I decided to head over to Giovanni Fresco for takeout. I have a sweet spot for fresh pasta. There was a short line of customers when I arrived here. They had a Saturday which was a half tray of Penne ala Vodka, 6 meatballs and dinner rolls for $39.99. The place is geared for takeout with a few tables here if you want to eat in. However, I decided on the Fresh Pappadelle with Meat Sauce ($12.99 plus tax), 2 Meatballs ($4 plus tax), Traditional Arancini ($5 plus tax), Fried Mac & Cheese ($5 plus tax) and Sfogliatelle (3 for $10 plus tax). I figured this would be enough food for a big dinner for myself. The owner Giovanni explained the homemade foods offered at his business. Back at the house, I enjoyed my haul for dinner. The fresh pasta dish with meat sauce with the meatballs in thick marinara were still nice and hot. The pappardelle noodles were cooked just right, the sauces were hearty and the meatballs (not big) had a very soft moist texture. The Traditional Arancini was a deep fried rice ball filled with mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce on the side. The Fried Mac & Cheese ball was very good too. The Sfogliatelle for dessert each had a firm flaky pastry shell filled with a sweet vanilla ricotta filling, great with my espresso. This is one stop I would definitely return to so I can try out their other Italian dishes such as the lasagna, homemade fettuccine alfredo, and penne ala vodka.

We started with two of their famous suppe (soup) - Spargelcremesuppe - gream of asparagus w/ garlic croutons ($8.50) and the most popular seasonal Cream of Yellow Chatrelle Mushroom Suppe w/ bacon & onion ($15.50). Unique to us and delicious. Dinners were trio of wild game sausages-wild boar, rabbit, & elk served w/homefries, red cabbage, & ligonberry sause ($34.50), Schweinelende-pan-seared pork tenderloins w/yellow chantrelle sauce, potato croquettes, and bacon wrapped green beans ($36.50), Gebratene Schweine Haxe-pork shank slow roasted with dunckel (dark) beer sauce w/ potato dumplings & sauerkraut ($35). Spargel serves authentic & unique dinners along with the familiar such as Rouladen, Schnitzels, & Goulash. Our waiter was super attentive and even though it took some time for the food to come out, I think given the quality of everything we ate, it was worth it. I got the raspberry mint mojito cocktail which was delicious and I pinched a sip or two of kid's lemonade made from fresh lemons, perfect level of sweetness. We tried the sweet potato pakoras and lumpia and the trio of house made dips (we liked the green mint-e one best). Everything was tasty, including the sauces that came up with them. Our kids shared the ramen which they split into two large bowls that didn't even look like a split dish given how much it was. My wife got the spare ribs which melted off the bones and had great flavor. The scallop dish I ordered came with six scallops that were a good size and also came with some gnocci, a delicious and unique sauce, and an unusual lobster with veggie type of ceviche salad accoutrement. I have the sense that the menu changes regularly here. The chef/owner came out and greeted us after the meal to ask how everything was and we could honestly respond that it was our best meal of the week. Subsequently we tried to sample many items from their desert menu and again Bastard did not disappoint. Surprisingly the "S'Mores," a more adult take on the kid's classic, was one of our favorites. Given the unique take on a variety of globally inspired dishes and great attention to detail, I would love to try Bastard again the next time I'm in the area.

The only issue I encountered involved the pricing on my bill. When I received the check, it seemed to be several dollars higher than what I remembered seeing on the menu. I politely mentioned it to our waitress, who appeared surprised and said she would double-check. She returned with the menu, placed it in front of us, pointed to the listed prices, and commented that she hadn't realized the discrepancy herself. The difference on our bill was only about $4 to $5, so it wasn't a major financial issue. However, my concern is that many customers may not carefully compare the menu prices to their final bill and may never notice if there is a pricing discrepancy. I'm sharing this review not to criticize, but in the hope that ownership or management will look into it and make sure the menu pricing and register pricing are consistent. I enjoyed the food and service and would return, but I believe this is something that should be addressed for the benefit of both the restaurant and its customers.
